Well, it looks like it’s not just iPad pre-orders that are possibly be
beating a few expectations — according to
NPD, sales of Macs and iPods were also up over some estimates in January and February. More specifically, NPD’s Gene Munster says that sales of Macs were up 39% year over year for the two months (ahead of estimates of 22%), which should translate to sales of between 2.8 to 2.9 million Macs for the full quarter, while iPod sales were up 7% during the same period, suggesting total iPod sales of between nine and ten million for the first quarter. That latter number may actually be the more impressive of the two, as it marks the first time iPod sales have rebounded into positive territory in a full sixteen months — although that trend could just as easily be reversed again if, say, Apple rolls out a new iPhone that cuts into iPod sales.

NVIDIA has certainly been
more active in 3D than
ATI/
AMD has as of late, but it looks like the situation may be starting to change, as AMD has taken advantage of the just concluded GDC to lay out its new Open Stereo 3D Initiative. While the company isn’t yet drumming up too much fanfare about it (or even issuing a press release), it does seem to have gotten things started on an ambitious note, with the initiative promising to provide consumers with “more choice, more innovation, and lower cost.” In the nearer term, that will apparently translate to products like 3D-enabled
ATI Eyefinity technology, 120Hz displays, stereo 3D notebooks, and various bundled solutions and shutter glasses. Of course, any actual product announcements are still a little ways off, but it looks like AMD does already have quite a few partners lined up.

Custom computer cases that look like spiders aren’t generally the sort of thing that are available to public, but Lian Li’s new PC-T1R case is one big exception to the rule, and it’s now edged a bit closer to a release. Previously only seen in a
teaser video, a nearly final version of the case has now landed in the hands of the folks at
techPowerUp, who have provided us with our first hands-on look at it. What’s more, the site also says that the case should sell for “around €150″ (or just over $200) when it’s released, and that it will be available in black in addition to red. Of course, there will be some assembly required — hit up the link below to see what’s in store.

Using a camera as an input device is hardly a new idea — even on a
mobile device — but most examples so far have been to enable functionality not possible on a touchscreen. As Master’s student Daniel Bierwirth has shown in the video after the break, however, a phone on a camera can also be used as an alternative input method for features like scrolling or zooming, potentially allowing for easier interaction on devices with smaller screens. Bierwirth also takes the idea one step further, and sees the system eventually including a second camera that’s worn by a person, which would be able to detect when your hands are near the phone and allow for a range of other gestures. Lenovo may mostly be associated with laptops and all-business desktops these days, but it looks like the company’s CEO hopes that won’t be the case for too much longer. Speaking with the AP,
Yang Yuanqing dropped the somewhat surprising statement that he expects mobile internet products to account for between 70 and 80 percent of the company’s sales “within three to five years.” Of course, Yang didn’t specify exactly what constitutes a “mobile internet product” for Lenovo, but we’d assume it includes things like the company’s new
IdeaPad S10-3t (and possibly even traditional laptops), or else it really has its work cut out for itself. He further went on to add that Lenovo is focused on a “protect and attack” strategy over the longer term, noting that while China accounts for half of its global sales at the moment, it’s now facing increased competition from the likes of Dell and HP both at home and abroad.

We’d had some indication that Europe would be seeing Motorola Milestones running Android 2.1 roughly around this time, and it looks like we are now finally starting to get a few more specifics. According to Mobile Bulgaria, that country’s leading carrier, Vivacom, will begin selling Milestones equipped with Android 2.1 “by March 20th,” which should no doubt be just part of a broader European rollout in the coming days / weeks (that will hopefully extend to Canada as well). Unfortunately, things still aren’t any clearer for Droid users in the US, but you can be sure we’ll be watching every development on that front.

We’d already gotten word of HP’s new $40 million “Let’s Do Amazing” ad campaign
earlier today, but the company has just now rolled out its first series of ads to give us some indication of how all that money is being spent. Somewhat curiously, for an ad campaign partly intended to reintroduce the HP brand to consumers, the ads stray pretty far beyond HP’s consumer products (including a trip to a UPS sorting facility and the Venetian’s IT department), but we do at least get to see Dr. Dre extol the benefits of HP Beats audio — not to mention a little beatboxing from Rhys Darby of “Flight of the Conchords,” who serves as the host of the ads. Sure, you read reviews and take recommendations from friends before you buy a new cellphone, but have you ever stopped to consider what the inventor of the cellphone uses on a daily basis? C-SPAN has, and recently took the opportunity to ask the man himself, Marty Cooper, that very question during a wide-ranging interview. While Cooper said that he has used an iPhone previously, he recently passed it on to his grandson in favor of a Motorola Droid, which he says he chose because he wanted to get more experience with Android. But that’s not all, Cooper also revealed that he carries a Jitterbug as well for when he just wants to make phone calls. Surprising for a pioneer of mobile technology? Not exactly, as Cooper actually co-founded Jitterbug with his wife, who he credits with inventing the phone. Head on past the break to watch the complete interview.

It’s not November ‘09 as originally promised, but Novothink has now announced that its
Solar Surge charging cases for the iPhone and iPod touch are finally available. Those will run $79.95 for the iPhone 3G/3GS version and $69.95 for the iPod touch version (second gen only, it seems), which are each available only in black or white at the moment (additional colors are “coming soon), and should add between four and eight hours of talk time, or up to 20 hours of additional audio playback. That’s, of course, when the charger is fully charged, but Novothink says you can still expect to get between 30 and 60 minutes of talk time after two hours of exposure to direct sunlight.

Need a bit more evidence that the e-book download business is a whole lot different than the music download business? Then look no further than Barnes & Noble, which has just announced that it plans to make its B&N eReader app available for the Apple iPad “around the time” of the device’s launch. Details are otherwise a bit light, but the app will be free, and is apparently “designed specifically” for the iPad, giving you access to all of the books, magazines and newspapers available in Barnes & Noble’s eBookstore. Could a Kindle app be far behind?
