K.D. Lang - Live By Request [2001]Se flere produkter fra AmazonLive by Request is, most certainly, a live recording of KD Lang, though nobody in the audience seems to do much requesting. Taped in December 2000 in New York, it shows Lang and her band before a smallish audience, rattling out a few of her better-known songs and some of Lang's generally creditable readings of standards, in between interruptions from a host who walks Lang through brief discussions of her career and influences. Listening to Lang sing is, of course, no hardship: few indeed are the vocalists who can mix it with the legacies of Roy Orbison ("Crying") and Patsy Cline ("Three Cigarettes in an Ashtray") and emerge with dignity intact, never mind reputation enhanced. That said, whatever intensity there may have been about the show on the night has not translated to this recording, and this is little more than a succession of polite performances greeted by polite applause. On the DVD: The picture format is the 4:3 television standard, and there are three sound modes to choose from (Dolby Digital Surround, DTS Surround, PCM Stereo). D-Tox [2002]Se flere produkter fra AmazonA Sylvester Stallone vehicle, D-Tox thinks it is inventive, earnest and serious, but it is actually just extremely dull and formulaic. Following the death of his girlfriend at the hands of a twisted serial killer, hard-nosed cop Frank Malloy (the in-need-of-a-hit Stallone) turns to drink. He then checks in to a remote, futuristic rehab clinic for cops to confront both his demons and the prospect of wearing a lavender-coloured parka for the duration of his stay. Cut off from civilisation by a freak blizzard, the inmates start committing strangely elaborate suicides, and it quickly transpires that the killer is amongst them. The killer's motives are meant to teach us something about the human condition, but they are contrived and convoluted, and merely provide the excuse for some uninventive, suspenseless deaths. The film is also littered with supposedly profound therapy scenes in which the characters discuss fear, grief and addiction, and Stallone is foolishly given the opportunity to "act". Worse still, a very strong supporting cast (including Kris Kristofferson, Charles S Dutton, Tom Berenger and Robert Patrick) is all but completely wasted and the whole affair is both narratively and visually derivative, unsuccessfully trying to evoke the weight of numerous better films such as Seven, The Shining and The Thing. During one of many tedious bawling sessions, a fellow inmate consoles Stallone with the wisdom that "sometimes the real bad things in life can make you stronger". Monumental Epics collects five of his most influential silent masterpieces. The Birth of a Nation (1915) is also the birth of the epic film. Made to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the end of the American Civil War this provocative film unflinchingly shows the humiliation of Southern culture, the "heroism" of the Ku Klux Klan, and links the Union and Confederacy by a common Aryan birthright. All of which has to be viewed in its period context if it is to be viewed at all. Intolerance (1916) is film-making of epic complexity. Human intolerance is related through a modern tale of wrongful conviction, intercut by three stories from Babylonian, Judean, and French history to point up the issue through the ages. The intricacy of the intercutting is breathtaking even now, but those as confused as the first audiences evidently were can opt to see each story separately. Sensitively tinted, this is Griffith's finest three hours. Broken Blossoms (1919) has Griffith venturing into domestic melodrama. Although there's a clear moral to be drawn from this tale of compassion in the face of ignorance and brutality, neither the over-acting of Lillian Gish and Donald Crisp, nor the vein of sentimentality that creeps into their characters' relationship allow the viewer to forget the period-piece nature of the film. Here an appropriately expressive musical score helps keep viewing at an attentive level. Way Down East (1920) shows Griffith moving from the epic to the personal, though still on a large scale. The combining of old-style melodrama with latter-day female emancipation is tellingly brought off, and Lillian Gish excels as the country girl used and abused by male society, until "rescued" by a farmer of true moral scruples. Unconvinced? Then go straight to the climactic snowstorm and ice floe sequences--Eisenstein et al are inconceivable without this as trailblazer. Abraham Lincoln (193 Fragt: Ukendt! |
