Saving Private Ryan - WWII Collection [1998]Se flere produkter fra AmazonSince its release in 1998, Steven Spielberg's D-Day drama Saving Private Ryan has become hugely influential: everything from the opening sequence of Gladiator ("Saving Marcus Aurelius") to the marvellous 10-hour TV series Band of Brothers has been made in its shadow. There have been many previous attempts to recreate the D-Day landings on screen (notably, the epic The Longest Day), but thanks to Spielberg's freewheeling hand-held camerawork, Ryan was the first time an audience really felt like they were there, storming up Omaha Beach in the face of withering enemy fire. After the indelible opening sequence, however, the film is not without problems. The story, though based on an American Civil War incident, feels like it was concocted simply to fuel Spielberg's sentimental streak. In standard Hollywood fashion the Germans remain a faceless foe (with the exception of one charmless character who turns out to be both a coward and a turncoat); and the platoon, led by Tom Hanks, consists of far too many stereotypes: the doughty sergeant; the thick-necked private; the southern-man religious sniper; the cowardly corporal. Matt Damon seems improbably clean cut as the titular private in need of rescue (though that may well be the point); and why do they all run straight up that hill towards an enemy machine-gun post anyway? Some non-US critics have complained that Ryan portrays only the American D-Day experience, but it is an American film made and financed by Americans after all. Accepting both its relatively narrow remit and its lachrymose inclinations, Saving Private Ryan deserves its place in the pantheon of great war pictures. On the DVD: This DTS edition of Saving Private Ryan presents the movie with astonishingly vivid surround sound that is audibly superior to the standard Dolby Digital version. With a wider dynamic range and a more spacious soundfield, the battles really do spill over into your living room. Schubert: Trout Quintet [2002]Se flere produkter fra AmazonThis edition of the Naxos Musical Journey series takes us to the towns and countryside of Schubert's Austria set to the soundtrack of his Trout Quintet, scored for piano, violin, viola, cello and double bass. We begin in the spa town of Baden, renowned for its surrounding vineyards. The crisp picture with colours well defined, of houses with lime green walls, inns painted pink, cobbled streets, no litter and few cars makes it look like a desirable resort. The camera pulls back as the tempo of the music picks up to reveal the vineyards (poppies at the reprise) under leaden skies. The tempo slackens for the second movement set on the Salt Chamber Estate in Spring: buttercups, cow parsley and narcissi flower in the Alpine meadows criss-crossed by streams. The "Scherzo" brings us to the resort of Steyr, where Schubert conceived the Trout on a walking holiday. The sun, now ablaze, shines brightly on pub signs a-plenty, guilds and craft shops. The fourth movement, "Theme and Variations", introduces the tune of Schubert's song, Die Forelle with an accompanying glimpse of a speckled trout in water so clear it could be drunk. The persistent rhythm of the finale accompanies a puffer train on the Steyr Valley Railway as it runs through woods and pastures. Then, as a coda to the journey, there's a one-movement Notturno accompanying pictures taken at twilight. On the DVD: Schubert: The Trout Quintet plays without flagging of the separate movements, which are given separately under the "Travel Notes" section. Other extras include a handy biography of the composer and the origins of quintet. The soundtrack has been remastered in Dolby Digital and DTS surround. He honours the French New Wave through spartan, documentary-style presentation and--save for possibly the two most meaningful "Bonjours" in cinema history--the total absence of dialogue, appropriate for a film in which devastation has robbed survivors of the power of speech. The action centres on Pierre Jolivet, good-guy in a society where vigilantism and subjugation are the primary tools of survival. Gladiatorially clad Jean Reno makes a characteristic showing as his ruthless opponent, while Jean Bouise is the taciturn doctor who comes to Jolivet's aid. Eric Serra offsets the chill austerity with a motley score of modernist clichés and easy listening soundbites. To be honest, there's little about this film that could be considered ground-breaking, but if a Mad Max scenario filtered through European surrealist sensibilities appeals, then Le Dernier Combat will make absorbing viewing. On the DVD Le Dernier Combat's 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen picture has a suitably stark immediacy, enhanced by the surround sound option. There are no subtitles, hardly a stumbling block in this instance, and no special features apart from the chance to see trailers for two rather different Hollywood productions. There's no directorial commentary, which is a pity, as Besson's subsequent career has been an eventful one and it would have been good to hear him discuss it from the perspective of his first feature. -- Richard Whitehouse Inkl. fragt: Ukendt |

Arriving eight years after the franchise-killing Batman & Robin, it managed to not only shine fresh light on the Batman franchise, but also emerge as a template for what a top notch comic book movie should be. Much of the credit, of course, should go to the pairing of Christian Bale and director Christopher Nolan. Bale steps where the likes of Michael Keaton, Adam West and George Clooney have stepped before, and yet his Batman is darker and more complex than any of them. Behind the camera is perhaps Batman Begins' secret weapon, as Nolan--previously responsible for Memento among others--rewards the gamble to give him the job in the first place. His film is packed full of memorable characters, and he draws together a staggering cast, yet none of them are shortchanged. From Rutger Hauer's brief cameo as head of Wayne Enterprises through to Morgan Freeman, Gary Oldman, Cillian Murphy, Tom Wilkinson and Liam Neeson, it's the finest cast in a film of this ilk since the first Superman. The film's belated Blu-ray debut has, fortunately, been worth the wait, with the reference-quality 1080p image simply sparkling on any screen that can handle the resolution. Backed up with a thumping surround sound mix, this is superb work, and it's fitting that it should be used on a film of this quality. Now? We just need The Dark Knight to join it in high definition. Such considerations are, of course, of only superficial importance: once producer and songwriter Jim Steinman had patented the Meat Loaf template on 1977's 30-million-selling Bat Out of Hell--an engagingly preposterous synthesis of Springsteen's Born to Run, Spector's Be My Baby, Wagner's "Ride of the Valkyries", Led Zeppelin IV and the Broadway musical--he didn't tinker much with the formula. The video clips that accompany the songs tend either to be workmanlike "live" performances or complicated mini-operas--the latter have not dated tremendously well. On the DVD: This DVD offers a choice of Dolby Surround Sound or PCM Stereo, and has a refreshingly simple and easy to navigate menu offering instant access to different tracks. Some Kind Of Wonderful [1987]Se flere produkter fra AmazonIn Some Kind of Wonderful, John Hughes crystallises, for good and ill, much of the stock material of the modern high-school romantic comedy. There is the outsider boy Keith (Eric Stolz) with artistic talent and sexual ambitions above his lowly status in a hierarchy based on wealth and popularity. There is Watts, (Mary Stuart Masterson) the tomboy next door, whose good looks and love for him he has somehow always failed to notice. And, most interestingly, there is Amanda Jones (Lea Thompson), who has parlayed her looks into running with the rich kids, but is starting to realise she has the worst of the bargain. There are some odd ambiguities here--all three take passive-aggressive behaviour to a level that is not entirely sympathetic--as well as some slick plotting: Keith's attempt to befriend Amanda by following her into detention brings him into contact with delinquents like Duncan, a terrifying skinhead who is more than he seems. In the end, there is just enough edge and invention here to keep it from being as crass and sentimental as films which have imitated its formula.
