	High Crimes [2002] Se flere produkter fra Amazon Just about acceptable as an in-flight movie, High Crimes is a tad weak for the big-screen, though its amiable stars and typical plotting offer the comforts of familiarity for home viewing. Ashley Judd plays a high-end lawyer who specialises in brilliant defence of the guilty, while Morgan Freeman is a broken-down ex-drunk who specialises in court martials ("military justice is to justice what military music is to music"). When Judd's handyman husband (Jim Caviezel) is arrested by the FBI and indicted for a massacre carried out in El Salvador while he was serving as a marine, Judd gets over the fact that he has concealed his entire past and even his real name and rallies to fight the case, even if it means going up against the shadowy masters of a conspiracy to cover up what actually happened. The movie rattles through all the clichÃ©s: bugs in phones; cars that cruise ominously by; staged road accidents; night-time intrusions; mystery men who hand out clues in the supermarket; dubious polygraph results; appearing and disappearing witnesses; smugly brutal generals, brilliantly made points of law; fights in the interview room; multiple revelations; a media circus and a final tussle in a darkened, deserted house. Judd, one of the best screen actresses of her generation, needs to pick better scripts since her commitment to rubbish only makes her look silly, but Freeman has done enough of these walk-through parts to get by on charisma and the odd smart line. On the DVD: High Crimes on disc comes with a gaggle of featurettes: a chat with the author of the original novel, Joseph Finder, some making-of puffery about staging stunts and the working relationship of the stars, and interesting little bits with the technical advisors about the court martial system and how to beat a polygraph. 	D-Tox [2002] Se flere produkter fra Amazon A Sylvester Stallone vehicle, D-Tox thinks it is inventive, earnest and serious, but it is actually just extremely dull and formulaic. Following the death of his girlfriend at the hands of a twisted serial killer, hard-nosed cop Frank Malloy (the in-need-of-a-hit Stallone) turns to drink. He then checks in to a remote, futuristic rehab clinic for cops to confront both his demons and the prospect of wearing a lavender-coloured parka for the duration of his stay. Cut off from civilisation by a freak blizzard, the inmates start committing strangely elaborate suicides, and it quickly transpires that the killer is amongst them. The killer's motives are meant to teach us something about the human condition, but they are contrived and convoluted, and merely provide the excuse for some uninventive, suspenseless deaths. The film is also littered with supposedly profound therapy scenes in which the characters discuss fear, grief and addiction, and Stallone is foolishly given the opportunity to "act". Worse still, a very strong supporting cast (including Kris Kristofferson, Charles S Dutton, Tom Berenger and Robert Patrick) is all but completely wasted and the whole affair is both narratively and visually derivative, unsuccessfully trying to evoke the weight of numerous better films such as Seven, The Shining and The Thing. During one of many tedious bawling sessions, a fellow inmate consoles Stallone with the wisdom that "sometimes the real bad things in life can make you stronger". 	Orange County [2002] Se flere produkter fra Amazon While it invites charges of Hollywood nepotism, Orange County overcomes that stigma with a delightful cast of newcomers and veterans alike. It's no better or worse than many teen comedies, but director Jake Kasdan (son of director Lawrence Kasdan) astutely combines teen-flick staples (stoner gags, raucous parties) with a biting undercurrent of southern California absurdity. This comedic texture helps Colin Hanks (son of Tom) and Schuyler Fisk (daughter of Sissy Spacek) to prove their big-screen promise. They play (respectively) an Orange County teen and aspiring writer named Shaun who yearns for admission to Stanford, and his sensible girlfriend who knows just how to nurture his dreams. Much of the comedy arises from the foibles of Shaun's dysfunctional family (played to perfection by Jack Black, Catherine O'Hara and John Lithgow), while unbilled cameos by Ben Stiller and Kevin Kline add zest to a movie that tries to be different, and mostly succeeds. -- Jeff Shannon Fragt: Ukendt! 	Bangkok Dangerous [2002] Se flere produkter fra Amazon Among a plethora of recent Asian "street movies", most of them little more than action sequences with MTV-like backdrops, Bangkok Dangerous stands out. Its harsh amalgam of guns, sex and crime is typical of the genre, but Danny and Oxide Pang have put together more than just a filmed video game. The comradeship between Kong, deaf mute and quick-witted hit man, and Joe, accident-blighted marksman turned mentor, is strong enough to withstand whatever the city can throw at them. The love element, in which Kong falls for the wide-eyed chemist's assistant Fon, hardly detracts from the violence and mayhem, but is enough to make Kong face up to his existence on the margins of society and his inability to choose another course. As high-impact as the visuals are, it's the balance between stasis and dynamism--with virtuoso camera work and editing--that makes for compulsive filmmaking. On the DVD: Bangkok Dangerous has an anamorphic widescreen picture that gives the visuals a garish immediacy. English subtitles are included, as are a selection of promo pictures and filmographies for the Pang brothers and star Pawalit Mongkolpisit. Mark Wyatt's film notes set the background succinctly, but an interview with either or both of the Pangs, or a location feature would have been even more welcome as context. 	Mozart: Requiem [2002] Se flere produkter fra Amazon Mozart's Requiem makes for another entry in the Naxos label's Musical Journey series, which combines great classics with images appropriate to the composer and work. Here the soundtrack is taken from a Naxos audio CD of the Requiem in its traditional version as completed by Sussmayr (though the DVD doesn't provide this or any other musical information), performed with considerable authority and dramatic weight by the Slovak Philharmonic and Chorus under Zdenek Kosler. The accompanying images begin in the Mozartplatz, Salzburg and encompass suitably bellicose classical paintings, the memorials to the composer and Goethe at the city's Buggarten and on to the Vienna History Museum, the Austrian National Library and the glorious stained glass windows of Linz Cathedral. These artistic treasures are contrasted with the natural glories of the Danube, intensely dramatic images of the sun against a tempestuous sky, and the spectacular Dachstein mountain landscape and glacier, with the breathtaking sight of a cross dominating a mountain almost 10,000 feet high. The scenes are generally well chosen and edited to provide an enjoyable visual tour to accompany one of Mozart's greatest masterpieces. On the DVD: Mozart's Requiem on disc boasts an "E-Z Menu" promising "the most accessible navigation", which is ironic given this is an extremely frustrating and counter-intuitive menu and appears to have been thrown together by a 1980's database designer who has never seen a DVD before. The 4:3 picture is very good, and the sound is equally fine, with the DTS mix having a little more weight and definition than the Dolby Digital 5.1 version. The stereo original is likewise impressive. Unfortunately the ends of several tracks are not allowed to fade out naturally, but are jarringly and abruptly cut off. This is most noticeable at the end of the "Benedictus", and completely ruins the end of the final "Lux Aeterna".
