Family Guy has nothing on the live-action Scrubs when it comes to surreal asides and fantasy sequences (for example, J.D. literally becomes the proverbial deer in the headlights when he cannot answer a medical query), pop culture references, and TV Land casting (John Ritter guest stars as J.D.'s negligent father in "My Old Man," and St. Elsewhere veterans William Daniels, Ed Begley, Jr., Stephen Furst, and Eric Laneuville appear as Legionnaire's-stricken doctors in "My Sacrifical Clam"). With surgical precision, this inaugural season charts J.D.'s growth as a doctor and a human being, and the close-knit bonds he forms with his equally overwhelmed peers and colleagues, including best friend and surgeon Chris Turk (Donald Faison), beautiful, but raw-nerved and by-the-book Elliot Reid (Sarah Chalke), and supportive nurse Carla Espinoza (Judy Reyes'), who affectionately nicknames J.D. "Bambi." But at the heart of the series is J.D.'s relationship with his mentor, Dr. Cox (an Emmy-worthy John C. McGinley), a cross between Obi-Wan Kenobi and a pit bull. Giving Scrubs a further shot of adrenaline are recurring characters Jordan (Christa Miller Lawrence), Dr. Cox's satanic ex-wife, and Neil Flynn as the Janitor, who torments J.D. just as Larry Miller menaced Jerry in the Seinfeld episode "The Doorman." Scrubs' animated sensibility allows for inexplicable cameos by Jimmie Walker or, at one point, an impromptu West Side Story-esque dance-off to convey the schism between the surgeons and other doctors. Saint Etienne - Smash The SystemSe flere produkter fra AmazonReleased as an accompaniment to their CD of the same name, Smash the System features videos to many of St Etienne's singles, ranging from "Nothing Can Stop Us" to "The Bad Photographer". Formed in 1990 by music journalist Bob Stanley and Pete Wiggs, St Etienne really clicked when they were joined by vocalist Sarah Cracknell, who looked like she'd stepped out of some imaginary 60s TV ad. Though not a "great" singer in the somewhat overrated, pyrotechnical sense, she would become emblematic of St Etienne's enduring efforts to create a pop canon that was at once as kitsch as Tupperware yet deadly serious. In their greatest moments, St Etienne hinted at an ecstatic, fragrant sense of the pure, nostalgic essence of pop, pop as it might have been, one perfect spring day in London long ago. Although St Etienne kept pace with the pop times, from the baggy grooves of "Only Love Can Break Your Heart" to the Ibiza-friendly flamenco of "Pale Movie", there was always an idealism about them, hinted at in the unlikely title of this collection. St Etienne's musical philosophy is matched in these videos, whose imagery ranges from the mundane to the magical, from derelict London gasworks to idealised moped rides in exotic locations. Among the visual highlights here are "Nothing Can Stop Us Now"; in which the band are recreated in a space age visual jukebox, "Avenue"; which flickers with grainy images of Cracknell's family home movie footage and "Hug My Soul" in which Cracknell torments her admirers as she plays hopscotch in a baby doll outfit. On the DVD: The quality of these videos holds up well, especially the exaggerated synthetic colours of "Nothing Can Stop Us Now". Extra features include a photo gallery and commentary in which, apparently confronted by these videos for the first time in years, Stanley and Wiggs mumble occasionally inaudible reminiscences, while Cracknell looks on with unnecessary self-deprecation at her appearance. From the moment Olivier strides on screen, the audience is held both rapt and willingly captive. During his magnificent "St. Crispin's Day" speech, Olivier refuses to indulge in excessive personal close-ups, choosing instead to depict the communal impact of his words on the troops. Though he understands the importance of clear, realistic communication, Olivier the director also displays a penchant for artifice--as exemplified by his decision to open the film in a replica of the Globe Theatre. The play's various diplomatic exchanges--usually of the dull, obligatory variety--are enlivened through touches of light comedy: a sly wind blows court papers over the set as courtiers argue over boundaries and treaties. There is also humour to be found in the King's taciturn romancing of Princess Katharine (Renée Asherson). But there are also plenty of large-scale events, with Olivier demonstrating the fleetness of Shakespeare's world even as he mimics the headlong rush of destruction. A romanticised film of a nation at war, the director leaves no doubt that the British victory over the French at Agincourt (1415) was Medieval England's and the King's finest military triumph. The film is rendered complete by William Walton's magnificent score, which pushes all the appropriate patriotic buttons.
