On top of Tucker Jenkins and Benny Green, there's the introduction of Pogo Patterson and Duane Orpington, while by the fourth series, Mrs McCluskey had moved into the headteacher's office, where she'd stay for many years to come. Joining Mrs McCluskey on the staff side were Grange Hill legends such as Mr Baxter, `Hoppy' Hopwood and Mr Sutcliffe, and between them they had plenty on their hands. From bike thieves to the tuck shop through to romance in the staff room and a member of the school council taking bribes, it was very much business as usual at Britain's most infamous comprehensive school. Series three and four really sees Grange Hill in confident form, consistently delivering interesting and progressive storylines for its cast of characters, that stand up well today. What's remarkable is that far from enjoying this boxset as a simple look back to a golden part of childrens' programming, you're likely to find yourself getting engrossed all over again. It concerns a sleepy University of Ithaca student named Josh (Breckin Meyer) who accidentally mails a video of his sexual encounter with an infatuation (Amy Smart) to his longtime girlfriend (Rachel Blanchard), who's seemingly avoiding him while at school in Austin, Texas. Naturally, he recruits some buddies--Seann William Scott as the lech, D.J. Qualls as the hopeless nerd, and Paulo Costanzo as the doper genius--to hit the open highway and intercept the package. Even more naturally, mayhem ensues: A car explodes, a bus is stolen, a nerd is deflowered, French toast is horribly violated, and an elderly man bogarts both pot and Viagra. The film's humour is more democratic than politically correct, as everyone--women and minority characters, not just the hipster white guys--have a hand in the high jinks. Green plays Barry Manilow (no, not that one), a professional student (eight years and counting)--he relates the film's story to skeptical prospective students while leading them on a tour of the college--and thrill-seeking dork extraordinaire. In particular, in an already justly famous sequence of scenes, he sadistically anticipates and endeavors to accelerate a mouse's demise at the jaws of a python. It's very much in the vein of American Pie, perhaps a smidgen tamer, but at least its characters don't really learn any dopey lessons in the end. Director and coscreenwriter Todd Phillips, who earlier made the much-questioned documentary Frat House, again proves he's more adept at staging fictional comic sequences than real ones. -- David Kronke Eurotrip Eurotrip views the Old World as a goofy parade of soccer hooligans, horny camera saleswomen, and pawing lechers reeking of cologne. They decide to escape their frazzled personal lives and rejuvenate themselves by taking a road trip on their slick hogs. But their journey is less Easy Rider than it is Three Amigos (plus one). As individual actors, each lead is a formidable star. But throw them all together into one crammed screenplay full of scatological humour and uncomfortable homosexual gags and it doesn't quite work. The actors spend so much time trying to outdo each other on screen that they aren't believable as friends, much less comrades. Walt Becker ( National Lampoon's Van Wilder) offers minimal direction on a film that could've used some reining in, especially during scenes between Macy and Marisa Tomei (as a diner owner who inexplicably falls for him). There are promises of some interesting vignettes when Ray Liotta shows up as Jack, the leader of a real motorcycle gang. When Jack threatens to break Dudley's legs, Dudley counters, "I'm a computer programmer! I don't need my legs." Without missing a beat, Jack says, "Fine, we'll break his hands." It's not that the lines are so funny, but they way Liotta delivers them that adds some life to this flailing comedy. Though this is set in the past, the evocation of rural small-town life--a seeming idyllic little world poisoned with gossip, social prejudice, and double standards--isn't all that far from the modern suburbia of All That Heaven Allows.
