Taped in December 2000 in New York, it shows Lang and her band before a smallish audience, rattling out a few of her better-known songs and some of Lang's generally creditable readings of standards, in between interruptions from a host who walks Lang through brief discussions of her career and influences. Listening to Lang sing is, of course, no hardship: few indeed are the vocalists who can mix it with the legacies of Roy Orbison ("Crying") and Patsy Cline ("Three Cigarettes in an Ashtray") and emerge with dignity intact, never mind reputation enhanced. That said, whatever intensity there may have been about the show on the night has not translated to this recording, and this is little more than a succession of polite performances greeted by polite applause. On the DVD: The picture format is the 4:3 television standard, and there are three sound modes to choose from (Dolby Digital Surround, DTS Surround, PCM Stereo). Much of Corbijn's material was shot in black and white, lending it an artful edge which captures some of the majesty of Mode's music. The non-Corbijn videos are Peter Care's for "Stripped", notable for its bleak imagery, and Clive Richardson's assured "A Question of Lust". The videos are presented chronologically and bookended by interviews with the band discussing the videos and the singles, making this a fantastic retrospective not only of Depeche Mode's visual side, but of their enduring musical legacy too. On the DVD: Depeche Mode: The Videos has a bonus disc featuring an extra hour-and-a-half of rare and exclusive material, including three insightful documentaries that centre around the albums Violator, Songs of Faith and Devotion and Ultra, and the US videos for "One Caress", "Strangelove 88", "Condemnation" and "But Not Tonight". All of this is good stuff and a valuable addition to the package. Both discs are pleasantly presented in a sturdy fold-out cardboard case, and recorded in Dolby stereo with a screen ratio of 4:3. Disc 1 contains the entire Saturday gig (almost two hours) remastered in vivid DTS 5.1 or PCM Stereo. The second disc collects both contemporary and brand-new material, including new interviews with Brian May and Roger Taylor. "A Beautiful Day" is a good documentary made at the time. More exciting is the wealth of unseen footage, both from the Friday night show and the band in rehearsal. There are "Queen Cam" views of each band member, and a photo gallery. Most poignant is a time-lapse short, "Wembley Towers", showing the philistine destruction of these national monuments. V - The Mini SeriesSe flere produkter fra AmazonNowadays, the word "event" is thrown around all too often when describing television programmes, but back in 1983 the debut of V: The Mini Series was a television event in the truest sense. The appearance of gigantic flying saucers over the world's largest cities heralds the arrival of aliens from a distant galaxy who look human and act benevolently. Of course, things aren't exactly what they seem, and when some suspicious humans start to question the visitors' intentions they uncover a vast alien conspiracy, along with some unusual culinary habits. Soon, the visitors have enslaved the Earth under their fascist rule, and small groups of human rebels are forced underground to fight for the freedom of their entire species. But with the future of the planet still in question the epic story comes to an abrupt end, forcing the viewer to wait for the resolution in V: The Final Battle and the on-going series. That's not to say that the original V isn't worth the price of admission: in over three hours, it manages to capture the spirit of the great classic science fiction of the 1950s and 60s. The feeling of paranoia and insecurity that runs throughout the whole thing makes it feel, at times, like an expanded episode of The Twilight Zone, only shinier (hey, it was the 1980s). The special effects were impressive for their day, inspiring similarly themed films in the 90s (the gigantic flying saucers were seen again in Independence Day, and the storage area of the mothership turns up in The X Files Movie and The Matrix). What does irritate, however, is the utter lack of subtlety in the allegorical storyline. In fact, it could only have been made more obvious by demanding that the entire cast wear "This is how it was in 1930s' Germany" t-shirts. But if V occasionally doesn't live up to its own high standards, it's still a remarkably high-quality slice of epic television drama. The involvement of director Harold Ramis might lead some to expect a straight-up comedy like Groundhog Day or Analyze This, but despite Ramis's fine and atypically subdued work here, it's the writers (Robert Benton and Richard Russo) who put a stronger stamp on their adaptation of the novel by Scott Phillips. Benton and Russo previously collaborated on Nobody's Fool and Twilight (with Benton also directing), and those films are similar in tone and spirit to this quirky, modern-day film noir, set on a freezing Christmas Eve in Wichita, Kansas, where mob lawyer Charlie Arglist (John Cusack) has a lot on his mind. He's just stolen $2 million from his boss (Randy Quaid), he can't trust his partner Vic (Billy Bob Thornton), he's secretly in love with the manager (Connie Nielsen) of the strip bar he owns, and his best friend (Oliver Platt, giving yet another terrific performance) is married to his ex-wife. Before the night's over, several murders will complicate matters even further, and throughout it all, The Ice Harvest is anchored by Cusack's good-natured presence in a bad-natured story that dares to combine double-crosses and bloodshed with elusive yuletide cheer. Alongside Metropolis (1926) it is one of the very few European features from the 1920s that is still regularly shown, and apart from being the first great horror film it laid the foundations of the vampire genre to the present day. Wearing astonishing rodent-like make-up Max Schreck cuts such an iconic figure as the undead Count that the 2001 comedy-horror Shadow of the Vampire suggested he wasn't acting at all! Although Murnau's film was revolutionary and technically adventurous for the time, a modern audience will have to make some allowances for the fact the movie now seems both dated and technically primitive: Murnau's stylised lighting and camera effects have been endlessly imitated and improved upon since, and even its greatest defenders generally admit the film barely raises a shudder, let alone a full-blooded scare. Nevertheless, Nosferatu holds a strange dreamlike grip on the imagination and its incalculable influence on fantasy and horror cinema means this is essential viewing for anyone seriously interested in the development of motion picture art. On the DVD: Presented in Academy at 1.37:1 and with James Bernard's new orchestral score in well-recorded stereo Nosferatu looks and sounds as good as it has in decades. Bernard, composer of Hammer's Dracula (1958) among others, has written a superior score that captures the film's subtitle, "A Symphony of Horrors", and truly brings the images alive in a way previous scores have not. This restored version presents for the first time on video or DVD the blue and brown tints of the original cinema prints and replicates the original hand-designed inter-title cards which with their distinctive designs make the film much more of a compete visual experience. As Captain Janeway, Kate Mulgrew maintained Starfleet integrity in the lawless expanse of the Delta quadrant and became the ethical conscience of her still-uneasy Maquis/Starfleet crew, whose unanimous loyalty would be dramatically proven in "The '37's" (a first-season hold-over). Janeway's moral guidance would also assert itself in "Death Wish" (a "Q" episode featuring NextGen's Jonathan Frakes) and "Tuvix", in which life-or-death decisions landed squarely on her shoulders. Series 2 brought similar development to all the primary characters, deepening their relationships and defining their personalities, especially Robert Beltran as Chakotay (in "Initiations" and "Tattoo"), now firmly established as Janeway's best friend (and nearly more than that, in "Resolutions") and command-decision confidante. Solid sci-fi concepts abound in Series 2, although "Threshold" is considered an embarrassment (as confessed by co-executive producer Brannon Braga in a self-deprecating "Easter Egg" interview clip). It was a forgivable lapse in a consistently excellent season that intensified Janeway's struggle with the villainous Kazon, exacerbated by a Starfleet traitor in cahoots with the duplicitous Cardassian Seska (played by Martha Hackett, featured in a lively guest-star profile). The psychologically intense "Meld" (featuring a riveting guest performance by Brad Dourif) was a Tuvok-story highlight, and the aptly titled "Basics, Pt 1" provided an ominous cliffhanger, including a second planetary landing (in a season full of impressive special effects) that left Voyager's fate in question. DVD extras are abundant and worthwhile, especially the season 2 retrospective and "A Day in the Life of Ethan Phillips" (who plays Neelix under a daily ordeal of latex makeup). Several Easter egg surprises--including a music video performance by Tim Russ (Tuvok)--are hidden (but easily found) among the "Special Features" menus on disc 7. While Northern Exposure somewhat jumped the moose in its last season, there are enough characteristically "weird, almost surreal" moments to make season 6 a nice place to revisit. The auspicious season opener, "Dinner at Seven Thirty," is a typically disarming and disorienting quirk fest that recasts the characters in a parallel New York universe. Dr. Joel Fleischman (Rob Morrow) is married to a high society (and high maintenance) Shelly (Cynthia Geary), Maggie (Janine Turner) is their au pair, Ed (Darrin E.Burrows) is an Armani clad corporate raider, Holling (John Cullum) is a Piano Man, Ruth-Anne (Peg Phillips) is the leader of an internal medicine group, Chris (John Corbett) is an inarticulate fashion photographer, and Maurice (Barry Corbin) is the luxury-highrise doorman. "I'd rather practice medicine in some hick rural outback than stay here another minute," Joel rebels, returning things to what passes for normal in Cicely. Another early gem is "The Robe," with guest star Charles Martin Smith (American Graffiti) as no less than the Devil who tries to corrupt Shelly. But then the series goes off the beaten path. Joel, following a bumpy courtship with Maggie, goes "Up River" to live in a remote fishing village (His final episode is the bittersweet, "The Quest," in which he departs for good for his "jeweled city"). Enter new doctor Phillip Capra (Paul Provenza) and his journalist wife, Michelle (Teri Polo), brie-eating yuppies from Los Angeles. Northern Exposure remained a fish-out-of-water comedy, but these two characters are as bland as tilapia. Though not nearly the hard cases that a resistant Joel was, they, too, succumb to Cicely's charms, and by series' end, Michelle is having hallucinatory forest chats with Joel's former New York rabbi. Happily, the rest of the characters are still good company. One of the show's many delights has always been its unending stream of movie parodies, and here we have four episodes devoted to just that. In "Beyond Blunderdome", Mel Gibson (playing himself) sends up his tough-guy persona when he hires Homer to produce his latest movie. Then in "A Star is Burns" Springfield hosts its own film festival (with acerbic guest critic Jay Sherman in attendance). The competition boils down to Barney's haunting cinema verité short about the horrors of alcohol or Mr Burns' grandiose vanity project (though Homer prefers Hans Moleman being hit by a football). "22 Short Films About Springfield" is a series of parodies within a parody featuring Springfield's secondary characters, including Milhouse's dad and Chief Wiggum in a glorious Pulp Fiction sequence. Finally, the show's own internal parody cartoon duo hit the big screen in "The Itchy and Scratchy Movie", while Bart and Homer lock horns about going to see it. They sell Soylent Green in the future cinema foyer; and Homer loves it, of course. On the DVD: just four episodes is hardly stunning value for money, but it's perhaps quality not quantity that counts here. Annoyingly there is no "Play All" facility, a serious let down in all the Simpsons DVD releases ( Futurama had the same problem, too). The only extra feature of any note is a three-minute montage of Troy McClure's finest moments.
