The First World War In Colour [2003]Se flere produkter fra AmazonWorld War I in Colour is a Channel 5 documentary (6 x 50-minute episodes) made with the cooperation of the Imperial War Museum, designed to make the Great War come alive for a 21st-century audience. The events of 1914-18 are authoritatively narrated by Kenneth Branagh, who presents the military and political overview, while interviews with historians add different perspectives. The human cost is conveyed by moving interviews with the now very elderly survivors, and by extracts from letters and memoirs. All aspects of the war, on land, sea and air are covered in separate programmes. In theory the series continues the heritage of ITV's The Second World War in Colour (1999) and Britain at War in Colour (2000), and with 75 per cent of the material never shown on television before there is every reason to watch. The crucial difference between this and the WWII programmes is that the Great War wasn't filmed in colour, and the footage has been computer colourised. The programme-makers argue the conflict itself was in colour--but however realistic the digital processing, it still feels inauthentic and historically a distortion. Worse still is their destroying the original compositions by cropping the top and bottom of the material to fit widescreen TVs. The result is a potentially excellent series badly presented, best watched with the colour turned off. Even then it cannot compete with the BBC's 26-part The Great War (1964), still one of the finest documentaries ever made. On the DVD: World War I in Colour is presented on two discs with three episodes on each disc. The modern interview clips look and sound immaculate, while the historical footage varies from very poor to quite good. Even so, the picture resolution is not helped by discarding a third of the original images and stretching what remains to widescreen. The budget spent on colourisation would have been better used to restore the often very scratchy black-and-white film, and to pay for an orchestra to rerecord the score, which is realised with a clich Inkl. fragt: Ukendt |

Shot on a rainy night in December 1999, the home video version expands upon an inaugural TNT cable telecast with an additional hour of performances. The DVD edition adds a premium level of special features and exclusive content. The music's the main thing, of course, and on that front One Love is uniformly respectful, orbiting around Marley's songs and infused with whiffs of his Rastafarian world view and reggae's broader Third World perspectives. Marley's family members serve as hosts and frequent collaborators, with a limber house band further reinforcing a coherent, communal element to the performances, and the titular all-stars immerse themselves in Marley's world. Lauryn Hill opens the concert with what is clearly one of its highest points, a joyful "Turn the Lights Down Low". Chrissie Hynde and Erykah Badu take turns duetting with Jimmy Cliff, and another reggae titan, Toots Hibbert, proves a perfect, ebullient fit with a current line-up of the Wailers. The celebrity choices include a conspicuous subset of American folk-rockers in Tracy Chapman, Ben Harper and Hootie and the Blowfish's Darius Rucker, with Chapman the most convincing in a glowing version of "Three Little Birds". Avid reggae fans may be mildly frustrated by the overall crossover thrust of this homage, which favours Yankee rap and hip-hop (via Busta Rhymes and Queen Latifah) instead of home-grown dancehall; it tantalises us with glimpses of Marley's peers, like Cliff and Hibbert, while being largely occupied with sustaining its parade of non-reggae marquee names. Bruce Hendricks's film of the 10th annual X games in Philadelphia not only goes some way to explaining the philosophy behind the lifestyle, it also features some of the most astonishing sporting footage committed to camera in recent years. During the course of the film's breakneck 30 minutes, the viewer will often find themselves repeating chapters just to make sure that they really have seen what they thought they saw--especially during the incredible stunts of the freestyle motor cross bikers. Yet Ultimate X is more than just a collection of flashy images, it makes an excellent attempt to give an insight into the scene through interviews with some of its major figures. While a couple fit the beach bum stereotype, the majority are lucid, articulate and obviously deeply skilled athletes. At the end of the day, however, what sticks in the mind about this remarkable film is the breathtaking combination of visual images, editing and crucially cool rock soundtrack--the sequence that ties the Foo Fighters' "Learn to Fly" with the Motor X Big Air competition alone is worthy of an Oscar. This is the best documentary of its kind since the acclaimed Hoop Dreams. On the DVD: Ultimate X comes in at a tidy half-hour, so the DVD fleshes out the feature with a range of extra footage. The interactive version of the movie offers the viewer a selection of icons that allow them entry into athlete profiles, a detailed look at their medal-winning runs, related features and tips on the various disciplines.
