"What's it all about, Alfie?" asked the hit Burt Bacharach/Hal David title song, to which the less philosophical answer might be: an amoral young man comically seducing a succession of beautiful women in swinging-sixties London. Michael Caine was the titular anti-hero, here consolidating his new star status from Zulu (1964) and The Ipcress File (1965), his conquests including Shelley Winters, Jane Asher and Shirley Ann Field. Alfie was a huge success, bringing a new frankness about changing sexual attitudes to the screen, in which respect it was almost the male companion to Julie Christie's then shocking, Oscar-winning performance in Darling (1965). It was also a sort-of contemporary Tom Jones, which had swept the Oscars for 1963, however, Alfie was not only better made, but in Michael Caine's guilelessly amoral asides to camera, offered a groundbreaking illustration of a newly self-conscious cinema. It is a technique Caine would reprise as the middle-aged philanderer in Blame It On Rio (1983). With Blow Up also released in 1966, and Ken Russell's Women In Love following in 1969, British film-making was truly in the midst of a sexual revolution. Michael Caine would reunite with director Lewis Gilbert and meet his female match in Educating Rita (1983). --Gary S. Dalkin

Don Letts' superb Westway To The World documentary allows The Clash to tell the second greatest punk story in their own words. Joe Strummer, Mick Jones, Paul Simonon and a touchingly frank Topper Headon each give personal accounts of the band's career in separate talking head interviews that triumph through their simplicity. Live footage and rare film of the band rehearsing is intercut with the anecdotes but this video is really about spoken memories rather than visual ones. The emotion in Strummer's voice as he talks about the demise of The Clash or the moment where a visibly humble Headon apologises to the band for his heroin use are worth a thousand grainy super eight segments. Simonon, meanwhile, is simply the coolest man ever to strap on a bass and has a charm to match. And Jones is clearly a music obsessive who kept the band one step ahead with the advent of hip-hop. Perhaps the only weakness of this account is the lack of contextualisation. Unlike Julien Temple's "Filth And The Fury", there are only fleeting glimpses of the outside world. Even so, Westway To The World is exhaustive and utterly inspirational. On the DVD: The DVD contains a wealth of extra interview footage (including Paul Simonon talking about setting fire to Lester Bangs!) and Letts' earlier Clash documentary Clash On Broadway. The account of The Clash's two week stay in New York is slightly more impressionistic than Westway To The World but contains a hilarious Topper Headon interview. A full band discography and a set of photos of the Clash also feature on the DVD. -- Ian Watson

Inside Man [2006]

An intelligent thriller with a healthy few twists up its sleeve, The Inside Man marks strong, although hardly career-best, work from all concerned. The plot is simple, and hardly fresh. On one side, you have a sophisticated team who walk into a bank, take everyone hostage and issue demands. On the other, you have a team of cops trying to apprehend those responsible and get the hostages out safely. In the middle, you have the owner of the bank, who's willing to bring in a bit of extra help to get the situation resolved. And yet what could have been a standard two-dimensional Hollywood blockbuster gets brains and substance thanks to those in front of and behind the camera. The talent in front is led by a consummate Denzel Washington, as the cop leading the situation. Then there's the increasingly impressive Clive Owen and the always-excellent Jodie Foster, with sterling support from the likes of Christopher Plummer and Willem Dafoe. Behind the camera, much has been made of the fact that this is the least Spike Lee-like film that Spike Lee has directed, yet that misses the point. The Inside Man sees a skilful, diligent and clever director utterly comfortable with what's going on, and wringing out plenty from the simple premise. It's not a flawless film by any means: the last reel doesn't quite match up to what preceded it, and the script doesn't really get you near the skin of the characters (even if it does serve up some delicious, not entirely expected moments). Yet as heist movies go, this is one of the better examples of recent times, with plenty of reasons to recommend it. -- Simon Brew

For its fourth season, Cheers served up a new bartender. Following the death of Nicholas Colasanto, who had played Coach, the season premiere introduced Woody Boyd (Woody Harrelson), the Indiana hick who certainly didn't raise the bar's collective IQ but had his own brand of endearing goofiness. That episode, "Birth, Death, Love and Rice", also explained what happened at the end of season 3 when Sam (Ted Danson) chased Diane (Shelley Long) and Frasier (Kesley Grammer) to Italy in hopes of preventing their marriage. The end result is that Diane returns to work at the bar and resumes her sexually charged flirtation with Sam, and Frasier becomes a brooding presence always looking for a way to win her back. Jennifer Tilly guest-stars as one of Sam's ex-girlfriends who actually hits it off with the petulant psychiatrist, but stealing the show in the same episode ("Second Time Around") was Dr. Lilith Sternin (Bebe Neuwirth), in what was supposed to be a five-minute one-shot role. The impossibly buttoned-up Sternin was such a perfect match for Frasier that she later became a regular cast member and won two Emmys. In other memorable episodes, Andy Andy (Derek McGrath) returns to terrorize Diane ("Diane's Nightmare"), the gang tries to turn the tables on Gary's Old Town Tavern in a bowling match ("From Beer to Eternity"), and Frasier sets up a night at the opera ("Diane Chambers Day"). In the three-part season finale ("Strange Bedfellows"), Sam begins dating a politician (Kate Mulgrew, later of Star Trek: Voyager) running for reelection. Diane decides to work for her opponent before taking a more drastic step, leading to Sam's memorable telephone call that served as a cliffhanger leading to season 5. Unlike previous seasons, the DVD set has no extras. --David Horiuchi

Season One The British sitcom The Office has the most devoted American following since Monty Python, so an American remake seemed doomed. Amazingly, the remake actually finds its own enjoyable version of the original's uncanny comedy of embarrassment. Office manager Michael Scott (Steve Carell, The Daily Show, The 40 Year-Old Virgin) believes he's the beloved leader of the Scranton, Pennsylvania, branch of a paper products company--but his relentless and painfully forced efforts at comedy creep out everyone around him, including paranoid Dwight (Rainn Wilson, who had a memorable recurring role on Six Feet Under), nervous receptionist Pam (Jenna Fischer, LolliLove), and aimless salesman Jim (John Krasinski, A New Wave), who's smitten with the already engaged Pam. The pilot episode suffers from closely replicating the British pilot, but after that The Office finds its own footing, turning diversity training, an office birthday party, and a basketball game into excruciating yet hypnotically funny rituals of humiliation. Carell, though clearly talented, can't match Ricky Gervais' unique performance as the aggressively needy British manager (it's hard to imagine that anyone could); as a result, the supporting roles become more prominent, and Wilson, Fischer, and Krasinski quickly create a rapport that matches and may even exceed that of their British counterparts.-- Bret Fetzer Season Two Thank goodness for second seasons. While the first season of The Office started dubiously with a pilot that was just a poor copy of the original British version, it did manage to provide enough good material to stay on the air and hint that better was yet to come. And here it is. The second season of The Office finds its own footing and manages to do the near-impossible by not only breaking free of the gravity of that excellent BBC version to stand solidly on its own, but establishing it as one of the best comedies on TV. Season 2 starts out strong with "The Dundies," where Regional Manager, Michael Scott (Steve Carell,

In School for Scoundrels wimpy Ian Carmichael wants to impress girls and get one over on all-round show-off and cad Terry Thomas (playing gloriously to type). Discovering Alastair Simms' unorthodox school Carmichael happily enrols and learns the quaint tricks of the day for securing the admiration of a fair lady. Ultimately as a star pupil he teaches the Master a thing or two about true love when everything turns out just fine in the end. Appealing to all male sensibilities is the idea of a magical set of simple rules for winning someone's affections. Set in the tweed-rich environment of an English boarding school makes this an even quainter notion. To watch this classic comedy is to cock one's snoot at womanisers everywhere while unavoidably making a mental list of anything that might actually work! The three central performances are brilliantly realised, particularly the role reversal between Carmichael and Thomas. Try playing a tennis match after a viewing without calling "hard cheese". - Paul Tonks

In 2007, a year that otherwise struggled to deliver where comedies were concerned, Knocked Up proved to be a very welcome treasure trove of laughs. It's from Judd Apatow, the man behind The 40 Year Old Virgin and the excellent TV show Freaks and Geeks, and sits easily as an equal to both. It's also a long-awaited showcase for the talents of Seth Rogen, who proves with some conviction that he can headline a movie. The premise of Knocked Up is simple. Seth Rogen and Katherine Heigl share, for differing reasons, a one-night stand, and several weeks later, the latter discovers she's pregnant. Given that Rogen's character has been jobless for years, and that Heigl is trying to build a TV career, the two don't prove to be a logical match, yet as the pregnancy progresses, they try valiantly to get to know one another. The narrative itself is quite straightforward, but it's the execution and characters that lift it significantly. Apatow knows how to direct comedy, and with a script peppered with plenty of guffaw-out-loud moments and situations, he wrings very hearty laughs from the material. Plus, while its Rogen and Heigl who power the film, the supporting cast is simply superb, particularly the collection of people that Rogen's character surrounds himself with. It's perhaps guilty of running ten minutes too long, and there's little to surprise in the story itself, yet Knocked Up is nonetheless a terrific, earthy and grounded comedy, with so much to enjoy. It's hard to single out individual moments, and instead it simply seems more appropriate to declare Knocked Up as one of the best, and most rewatchable, comedies of the last few years. Don't miss it.-- Simon Brew

That Mitchell And Webb Look - Series 2 - Complete [2008]

Two of the country's most popular comedians bring back their equally popular sketch show for a second series, and it shows that David Mitchell's and Robert Webb's respective stars are showing little sign of waning. Bringing back old characters with plenty of new ideas, That Mitchell And Webb Look's second series is funny, clever and destined to be watched over and over (even if it does struggle at times to match series one for gut-busting laughs). The duo seem to have a bit more money to work with here, too (helped in no small way by the continuing success too of Peep Show), but it's still the favourites from series one that generate many of the big laughs in That Mitchell And Webb Look. Game show parody Numberwang, in particular, is ingenious and very, very funny, and one of the absolute ongoing highlights of the show Elsewhere, Sir Digby's return is less successful, and some of the new material is more hit and miss than you'd hope for. But the joy of That Mitchell And Webb Look is that there's usually a good laugh around the corner, and that proves to be the case here. It may not see the pair at their absolute peak, but this is sketch comedy as good as anyone else is doing on British television screens right now. Well worth your time. And funnyboneÂ… -- Jon Foster

Johann Strauss II's wonderfully convoluted and ingenious Viennese farce Die Fledermaus is a masterpiece of operetta. The tale spins waltz-like around the philandering Von Eisenstein (Thomas Allen), his wife Rosalinde (Pamela Armstrong), who is tempted by singing teacher Alfred (Par Lindskog), and Adele (Lyubov Petrova), Rosalinde's maid. Following Shakespeare's romantic comedy template there is much mistaken identity, confusion of purpose and cross-dressing, with the events unfolding around an increasingly drunken masked ball and the morning after in the local jail. The champagne-fuelled entertainment carries various satiric undertones, but this adaptation by director Stephen Lawless and Daniel Dooner emphasises colour, wit and flamboyance, always ensuring the jokes work well for a modern audience. The production requires acting as strong as the excellent singing, and Thomas Allen delivers a subtly layered interpretation of Eisenstein, while Pamela Armstrong's Rosalinde offers a winning study in smouldering sensuality, well contrasted with Lyubov Petrova's more directly sexual Adele. The revolving set mirrors the swirling Strauss dances and the elegant design is a perfect match for the boldly extrovert costumes. If this Glyndebourne 2003 production doesn't match Dame Joan Sutherland's retirement performance at the Royal Opera House in 1977 for historic value, it is easily as much fun and the production values are second to none. On the DVD: Die Fledermaus is presented on a two-disc edition with Acts 1 and 2 on the first disc and Act 3 and 37 minutes of extras on the second DVD. The 16:9 anamorphically enhanced image is as strong and detailed as BBC live digital video recording can be and the sound is offered in excellent stereo, as well as superb 5.1 DTS, which places the listener in the acoustic equivalent of the best seat in the house. The extras begin with 20 minutes of short but worthwhile interviews with Pamela Armstrong, Thomas Allen, Hakan Hagegard, conductor Vladimir Jurowski and director Stephen L

If there's a screen performance in 2008 that comes anywhere near to matching Daniel Day-Lewis' Oscar-winning turn in There Will Be Blood, then we've come nowhere near to seeing it. A tour-de-force of acting and a career high for Day-Lewis, it's the highlight of an extraordinary, really quite daring piece of cinema. That said, we've come to expect nothing less from writer/director Paul Thomas Anderson, the man who previously brought us Boogie Nights, Magnolia and Punch Drunk Love. However, he's really topped himself in terms of ambition with There Will Be Blood, an adaptation of Upton Sinclair's book, Oil! It follows Daniel Plainview (Day-Lewis) who, when we first meet him in the film's silent opening is attempting to mine silver, before he discovers oil and slowly builds up an empire off the back of it. There Will Be Blood then follows his rise to power, given the vast riches that his oil brings him, concurrently exploring his relationship with his son. It proves to be a long, complex, stunning piece of work. There's little room in There Will Be Blood for much more than the sheer power of Day-Lewis' performance, but credit Paul Dano (last seen saying an awful lot less in Little Miss Sunshine) for attempting to go toe-to-toe with the leading man. He's a foil of sorts for Plainview, playing a man as troubled and torn as Day-Lewis' character, and it's a career high to date for the young actor. The film, too, is a match for anything Paul Thomas Anderson has done to date, and that's some achievement. With no easy resolution, and a degree of complexity in its characters that we all-too-rarely see from modern American films, There Will Be Blood is a challenging, at times breathtaking piece of cinema. It won't be to all tastes, and it adamantly refuses to give easy answers, but it's as daring as anything you'll see on screen all year. And Day-Lewis' performance ranks next to any of the all-time greats that you'd care to mention. -- Simon Brew

Viewed objectively, sheep aren't all that scary. They're actually quite cute and fluffy. But Black Sheep achieves the almost impossible by making you believe, at least for 90 minutes, that they could really turn into unstoppable killing machines. When a sheep-phobic ends up back on his family's farm to discuss his father's estate with his tyrannical brother, a pair of bumbling eco-warriors accidentally unleashes his worst nightmare--a flock of mutated sheep, hungry for human flesh. Pitched perfectly between horror and comedy, Black Sheep fits neatly into the tradition of genre classics like Shaun of the Dead and American Werewolf in London. It's funny without either being cruel or becoming tediously post-modern, scary without being sadistic. New Zealand's rolling green hills make a stunning and rather incongruous backdrop for the bloodbath--and the prosthetics and special effects look fantastic, packing a visceral punch that CGI could never hope to match. Director Jonathan King paces the laughs and scares expertly; there's not a minute wasted in Black Sheep's runtime, and not a minute that isn't ridiculously enjoyable. Who'd have thought zombie sheep could be so much fun? -- Sarah Dobbs

Still adored by audiences in the US, Lover's Live presents footage of Sade's critically acclaimed sell-out tour of North America in 2001. Throughout the concert Sade is just as suave and sophisticated as the lover boy she so poignantly sings about in "Smooth Operator". The silky, gold robe, which she adorns for the majority of the concert, is a perfect match for her honey-sweet voice. Like the simple stage set, Sophie Muller's pale photography is just as basic and functional but succeeds in bringing the vibrant Sade to the foreground. The screen at the rear of the stage conjures up evocative visual imagery, which match the mood and enhance the performance of each song. The simple but breathtaking stage projection of a water drop hitting the surface of a larger mass of water for "Somebody Already Broke My Heart" adds an awesome and spine-tingling edge to the song's chord crescendo. As well as an ample dispersal of tracks from the "Lovers Rock" album, most of her greatest hits are performed; from "Your Love Is King" to "The Sweetest Taboo". Her music and image may have progressed little since she was the golden cover-girl of The Face, but it's still great to hear that delectable voice and witness that elegant panache. On The DVD: enhancing the style of the main feature, the DVD boasts an array of quality extras and slick menus. "Message To Sade" is an excellent short film directed by top art-house directors, the Polish brothers, which focuses on the excitement prior to the concert, as well as highlighting some of her dedicated and eccentric fans. The Polish's behind the scenes sequence of both the band and Sade preparing to go on stage, plus a 16-shot tour photo gallery further enhances this package. The first feature Katsuhiro Otomo has written and directed since his watershed Akira (1988), Steamboy offers a fantastic, sepia-toned vision of the past-as-future. In place of the dystopic Neo-Tokyo of Akira, Steamboy is set in England in 1866. Young Ray Steam receives a Steam Ball, a mysterious, powerful device, from his inventor grandfather. Governments and businesses covet the Steam Ball, and Ray finds himself in a murderous conflict over its possession. He's also caught between his father, a 19th century Darth Vader who builds terrible weapons for an American arms merchant, and his grandfather, who believes science should improve people's lives. Otomo uses computer graphics to create dazzling visuals that few recent films--animated or live action--can match: monumental systems of gears and pistons; machines that dwarf the Tower of London; antique weapons of mass destruction. But the dazzling imagery can't disguise the lack of a coherent plot and the flimsiness of the characters. --Charles Solomon, Amazon.com
