Picking up where the miniseries ended, season 1 opens with the riveting, Hugo Award-winning episode "33," in which Galactica and the "ragtag fleet" of colonial survivors begin their quest for the legendary 13th colony planet Earth, while being pursued with clockwork regularity by the Cylons, who've now occupied the colonial planet of Caprica. The fleet's hard-fought survival forms (1) the primary side of the series' three-part structure, shared with (2) the apparent psychosis of Dr. Gaius Baltar (James Callis) whose every thought and move are monitored by various incarnations Number Six (Tricia Helfer), the seemingly omniscient Cylon ultravixen who follows a master plan somehow connected to (3) the Caprican survival ordeal of crash-landed pilots "Helo" (Tahmoh Penikett) and soon-to-be-pregnant "Boomer" (Grace Park), whose simultaneous presence on Galactica is further evidence that 12 multicopied models of Cylons, in human form, are gathering their forces. Produced by The Jim Henson Company, this two-episode video features Disney Channel's favourite seven foot Bear and his colourful muppet friends. The first episode "The Big Blue House Call" attempts to tackle children's fear of the doctor. When Doc Hogg pays a visit, Bear explains to his friends the importance of check-ups and with a song he coaxes Ojo the frightened bear cub from under the bedclothes for his vaccination. The second show "Picture of Health" emphasises that rest is as important to good health as a balanced diet and exercise. Bear successfully advises exhausted mouse Tutter that he will feel stronger and refreshed if he takes a short sleep. Youngsters will quickly warm to Bear who is friendly, confident, curious and cuddly. He encourages a participatory mood with his young audience by moving very close to the camera and talking directly to them. He even claims he can smell his healthy young viewers! Songs play an important part in setting the pace. Each episode starts with the cast belting out "Welcome to the Blue House" and finishes with the striking image of Bear on the balcony and the moon character Luna singing a harmonious duet. There are three additional original songs per episode, many with funny and memorable lyrics. One of its major attractions is outstanding camerawork, under the direction of Barrie Gavin, powerfully reinforcing the shifting moods created by the music. The photography is notable in frequent close-ups, particularly those that focus on the ravaged, vulnerable and intensely expressive face of Philip Langridge in the title role. His interpretation is strikingly different from that of his chief video rival, Jon Vickers, who presents a more burly characterisation. The ambiguities in the role of Grimes make it possible to emphasise either strength or vulnerability in this story of an alienated fisherman, who stands virtually alone against a small (and small-minded society), vast forces of nature and a run of bad luck. His young apprentice has died (possibly because of his neglect or brutality); he is legally acquitted but found guilty by his neighbours and forbidden to take another boy as apprentice. He ignores that warning, the second boy dies accidentally, and he commits suicide under intense public pressure. Langridge gives a striking account of the role's psychological depth and complexity, aided by a well-chosen and directed cast. James Atherton conducts expertly. 	Stargate SG-1: Season 6 Se flere produkter fra Amazon The biggest change for Stargate's sixth season was its move to the Sci-Fi Channel. Financial rescue or genre haven from cancellation? Whatever the behind-the-scenes politics, the departure of Daniel Jackson (actor Michael Shanks) the previous year most certainly contributed to the need to run a tighter ship somewhere. With the addition of his replacement, Jonas Quinn, the new show dynamic (hinted at by the new title theme tune) meant far more convoluted arc-stories and less individual focus. One of very few solo spotlights came from Christopher Judge writing his own show, when "The Changeling" saw Teal'c act out a life as a fireman. One reason for being a fan favourite was its cameo from still-alive-after-all Daniel Jackson. There'd be several more through the year, culminating in a finale that tested how much attention you'd been paying to that all-important back-story. Other kooky cameos included Dean Stockwell in one of the many spotlights on the energy resource n'quadria, Ian Buchanan as one of the devilish Replicators (and hopefully the end of that plotline) and regular spots from John DeLancie, Ronny Cox and Tom McBeath as the Earth-bound series baddies. More pertinently, we also saw Byers from The X-Files (Bruce Harwood) as a scientist involved with the Antarctic Gate. Lest we forget, there are other portals on Earth. 	Red Dwarf : Complete BBC Series 6 [2005] Se flere produkter fra Amazon Series 6 is possibly the most eagerly awaited of the Red Dwarf DVD sets, due to its acclaimed third episode, "Gunmen of the Apocalypse", which earned the program an International Emmy Award in 1994. However, the five other episodes in the series have their own share of absurd laughs, and the two-disc set features enough supplemental features to keep even the most demanding RD fan happy. The crux of series 6 is that the Red Dwarf has been stolen (no thanks to Lister, who can't remember where he left it), and the crew must recover it; their pursuit brings them in contact with brain-consuming aliens ("Psirens", with guest star Jenny Agutter), a polymorph that turns Rimmer and Cat into their alternate identities from Series V ("Emohawk--Polymorph II"), the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse tricked out as gunslingers ("Gunmen of the Apocalypse"), an army of Rimmer clones ("Rimmerworld"), and finally, their own future selves, who turn out to be particularly awful (worse than the present-day ones, that is), and cause a cliffhanger ending that just might spell the end for the Red Dwarf crew.... In short, series 6 more than earns its popular status among Red Dwarf's fanbase, thanks to its sharp writing (sadly, it would be the last series to feature scripts by co-creator Rob Grant) and energetic performances. And the double-disc set matches the quality of the programs with some terrific extras, including commentaries by the RD crew and fans (the latter on "Gunmen of the Apocalypse" only), and featurettes on composer Howard Goodall and series director Andy de Emmony; these are rounded out by the usual collections of "smeg-ups" (bloopers), deleted scenes, behind-the-scenes footage, and another episode of the "Dave Hollins, Space Cadet" radio sketch that inspired the show. 	Those Who Love Me Can Take The Train [1998] Se flere produkter fra Amazon Those Who Love Me Can Take the Train marks a change of genre and setting after Patrice ChÃ©reau's last film, the lurid and sweeping historical drama La Reine Margot (1994). But here too he gives us a story of familial violence and emotional extremes. The train-takers in this classy French drama of extended family relations are the friends, relatives and ex-lovers (of both genders) of the deceased Jean-Baptiste (Jean-Louis Trintignant plays both the dead painter and his brother), a depressive Parisian painter, fond of Francis Bacon, and a conduit, he sometimes thinks, for the voice of Satan. The first section gets good mileage from putting contrasting and sometimes squabbling people in a confined space to see what happens. Mostly they out themselves as troubled types (there are problems with drugs, illness, failing and new relationships), because they're like that anyway, and because their dealings with the exploitative old painter haven't helped. Like most dramas of family life in times of crisis, especially the French ones, it's a pageant of dysfunction, maybe given a touch more colour by the bohemian setting. As the film continues, the cast swells to include other relatives and friends who arrive at the funeral at Limoges. The film partly resembles Festen, in that a familial get-together occasions the unveiling of secrets and lies. But compared to Festen, the revelations are less shocking, if only because the ramparts of respectability are very shaky from the word go. ChÃ©reau's visual style has its handheld moments (though it's never as austere as Festen), but there's a classical rhythm to the revelations, some of which emerge in powerful set pieces. The bust-ups feel necessary, and they usher in a more upbeat ending, of which the transsexual Viviane (Vincent Perez) is the guardian angel. 	Shosktakovich - Symphony No.6 And 9 [1986] Se flere produkter fra Amazon This DVD is a fascinating document of a great conductor and orchestra playing two of the most underrated of Shostakovich's symphonies in 1985 and 1986 concerts in Vienna's Musikverein. In his spoken preface to the Sixth Symphony, Bernstein says he wants to "right a wrong"--the "wrong" being the work's reputation as unstructured lightweight piece. It is an unbalanced work, the opening Largo much longer than the remaining two movements, which can seem as mere appendages. But even at his extremely slow tempo, Bernstein makes it all hang together--the Largo moving in its icy bleakness, the Scherzo a genial joke, the final Presto (taken more as an Allegro and not a fast one at that) an opportunity for the conductor to show off his dance steps. The Haydnesque Ninth, despite idiosyncratically slow tempos is light and humorous, its sardonic touches here relished by Bernstein. The Vienna Philharmonic isn't the ideal band for Shostakovich but Bernstein makes them play beyond their natural inclinations; here they lack only a bit more vulgarity in the brass and percussion to be fully idiomatic. The net result is a pair of deeply felt, emotionally powerful performances. Director Humphrey Burton's discreet camera work is excellent, with sufficient close-ups of the conductor and plenty of section shots interwoven with close-ups of solo players to help draw attention to key musical strands. 	Robin Of Sherwood - Series 3 - Part 1 - Episodes 1 To 6 [1984] Se flere produkter fra Amazon When Robin of Loxley transformed into Robert of Huntingdon in the third series of Robin of Sherwood, many viewers were understandably confused. Michael Praed left the series for reasons that never really became apparent while Jason Connery clearly wasn't a replacement chosen for similar looks or performance. Across the 13 episodes of the third series, Connery's choice became slowly apparent. The magical stories frequently dipped into darker territory as much as they aimed for uplifting humour. The new Hood was at ease with both, while reuniting the merry band and ultimately wooing the fair Marion all over again. Connery turned in a very confident embodiment of the character, clearly bonding well with the established team of actors. Guest stars lined up to contribute alongside him. Memorable appearances include those of Richard O'Brien, David Rappaport, Matt Frewer, Patricia Hodge, Ian Ogilvy and Lewis Collins. (It's fascinating to speculate how different things could have been if the close-second casting choice of Neil Morrissey had been pursued.) The strangest aspect of the series, however, is knowing in retrospect that everyone's confidence and merriment was for nothing. Scripts were written in readiness for the fourth series, but then the studio went bankrupt. 	Scorpio [1973] Se flere produkter fra Amazon Though not quite a classic, director Michael Winner's Scorpio is still an underrated espionage thriller that was well attuned to the political cynicism of its time. Burt Lancaster plays Cross, a CIA operative who dates back to the agency's earliest days as the OSS. Scorpio (Alain Delon) is a protÃ©gÃ© of Cross, and one of Cross's best friends in a netherworld where everyone's allegiances, personal and political, are in question. Higher-ups within the intelligence agency decide that Cross knows too much and is better off eliminated; at first, Scorpio refuses the job until the CIA frames him on a phoney narcotics bust and coerces him into the assignment. The two men play a game of global cat-and-mouse as Cross consorts with his Russian counterparts--fellow ageing dinosaurs in a young man's game. Cross's links with the Russians go back to the days of the Spanish Civil War and the time when Cross was given the ironic label of "premature anti-Fascist" by the House Unamerican Activities Committee. The incredibly convoluted plot is rife with double-crosses and reverse double-crosses, in an environment in which nothing is quite as it seems and no one is to be trusted. Winner infuses enough energy and excitement into the film's many action segments to make Scorpio worthy of comparison to John Frankenheimer's best political thrillers. The director also throws in several curveballs, such as the zither music during a meeting in a Vienna cafÃ© (shades of The Third Man) and the preposterous device of disguising Lancaster as an African-American priest. 	Tosca - Puccini [1976] (NTSC) Se flere produkter fra Amazon Opera is an inherently theatrical medium that does not lend itself readily to the realism of film treatment. The shining exception is Puccini's Tosca, an action-packed melodrama that unfolds in three taut and gripping acts, like the meatiest of Hollywood films noir. And unlike most operas, these three acts are set in three very specific Roman locales. Thus this 1976 film takes place in the church of Sant'Andrea della Valle (Act 1), the Palazzo Farnese (Act 2) and the Castel Sant'Angelo (Act 3). The evocative settings, however, would be mere window-dressing if the cast wasn't just right; fortunately here Placido Domingo is at his virile peak in the heroic tenor role of Cavaradossi; Raina Kabaivanska is a sultry, vocally beautiful Tosca; while a more infamous and domineering Scarpia than that of Sherrill Milnes can hardly be imagined. Bruno Bartoletti and the New Philharmonia Orchestra give lustily dramatic support. Here the music and vocals are pre-recorded and the singers mime to the playback. Occasionally the result is a little unnatural, but overall the cast are good enough actors to bring off the conceit even in the close-ups. It all pays off triumphantly with the gripping realism of the rooftop finale, the one place where film can improve on stage. With the authenticity of the settings assured and such distinguished leads singing so well, this is an almost ideal filmed Tosca. On the DVD: Tosca on disc is presented in 4:3 ratio with a choice of Dolby 5.1 or LPCM Stereo. The picture is adequate but a little flat (possibly because the format is NTSC not PAL) and the same can be said for the sound, which does what it should but is never revelatory. 	Made for Each Other [1939] (NTSC) Se flere produkter fra Amazon Produced in a time when films were both literally and figuratively black and white, Made for Each Other was unique in its effective blending of the comedic, the dramatic and, as perhaps some would insensitively say, the melodramatic. Beautiful Carole Lombard and likeable James Stewart are Jane and John Mason, a couple who meet, fall madly in love, marry and quickly have a baby. But while they--and the audience--are confident that they are meant for each other, life intercedes and the couple must meet with disapproving in-laws, job stress, financial challenges and, finally, a devastating illness. Lombard and Stewart--and the genuinely good people they portray--are utterly compelling and charming. Say yawningly what you will about tradition but the Masons' path is one that many, if not most, go down. And unlike the wonderful but wholly fantasy world of peer Preston Sturges, director John Cromwell's universe is, like real life, full of ups and downs. It's an accessible, sensitive portrayal. He gives the audience characters they want to see succeed, and to see stay together in the process. It may be a tale of triumph of the human spirit but its ultimate sentiment--one that celebrates the kindness of strangers--is thoroughly sweet, though in no way saccharine. 	Kate's Cardio Combat [2002] Se flere produkter fra Amazon In Kate's Cardio Combat, the winner of Big Brother 3 Kate Lawler certainly looks the part; with a tanned and toned body, blonde hair and a natural affinity for cropped tops and trousers. Though obviously intended for women who want Lawler's body, and men who might want a physique to attract women with great bodies, it's unclear as to exactly whom this will really appeal. Lawler might claim this is for men who wouldn't be seen dead in a leotard doing yoga. But will they be seen dead flaunting this title on their shelves? Trainer and copresenter Rhydian Lewis has created a 50-minute all-round session intended to work heart and lungs, burn body fat, develop strength, and tone the body. The session starts with an energetic warm-up and goes into press-ups ten minutes into the session, moves into lively kicks, then targets abs and thighs, and finally winds up with a cool down. It'll certainly work up a good sweat, but whether it wows or not depends on the extent to which Lawler can occupy the viewer's attention. Despite clearly lapping up the novelty, Lawler is by no means a natural presenter. Trying too hard to impress with lame comments and exaggerated facial expressions, she is too self-absorbed to engage in any playful interaction or flirtation--which is, after all, what she's best known for. On the DVD: Kate's Cardio Combat on disc comes with an extra ring workout where Lawler finally loosens up and is more natural and playful. As for the so-called interview, this amounts to Ms Lawler articulating a few sentences on allocated subjects. On Big Brother: "one of the most exciting experiences"; on love: "It scares me"; on boxing: "I really love boxing."
