Spooks : Complete BBC Series 2 [2002]Se flere produkter fra AmazonRevelling in its reputation for pulling no punches, the second series of the BBC's slick spy drama Spooks maintains the quality of its award-winning first year, serving up enough nail-biting moments of genuine tension to outweigh any concern that occasionally it courts controversy for no better reason than to cock a snook at the notoriously timid Auntie Beeb. The Islamic terrorist episode unsurprisingly received a great deal of negative publicity, but a show that prides itself on its contemporary edge could hardly ignore such an issue. Other episodes tackle computer hackers, Eastern European terrorists, Columbian drug cartels, inter-service territorial disputes with the CIA and even a mutiny in the army. One of the strongest episodes, set entirely within the sealed-off MI5 Section B department, tracks the team's individual reactions to what might be a drill, or a real and devastating VX gas attack. Throughout, this year focuses a great deal on the team's personal problems, notably Tom Quinn's chaotic love life, which ultimately brings his loyalty to the service into question. Cast changes introduce some new faces, while some old ones pop up in unwelcome places (Jenny Agutter relishing her new role as a villain). Pacy direction and snappy editing, generous use of slo-mo, split-screen and dramatic music all add to the tension inherent in scripts that bring a modern, youthful edge to the creaky old spy genre. Only the final episode resorts to some hackneyed plot contrivances in a rather strained bid to produce the now-obligatory cliffhanger. -- Mark Walker Inkl. fragt: Ukendt |

Boiler Room [2000]Se flere produkter fra AmazonThe intense soundtrack of Boiler Room is a fitting underscore for this movie, which pulses with the vigour of young, rich, amoral men wreaking havoc. This is not the anti-societal havoc of Fight Club, but the more deliberate mayhem that comes from greed run amok. The testosterone-junkie brokers of JT Marlin (the only female in the office is Abby, the receptionist and love interest, played by Nia Long) are out to make the sale, and whether that sale is legal or ethical doesn't matter. Seth Davis (Giovanni Ribisi) is a 19-year-old college dropout who strives for approval from his father (Ron Rifkin), a judge who is horrified that his son operates a 24-hour illicit casino. When an old friend visits the casino with a fellow broker, Davis is impressed by their wads of money and yellow Ferrari, and decides to join the firm. In no time he's making sales and settling into the groove of the office and all the after-hours perks, but the dream fades when Davis discovers the scam that is making all of the brokers wealthy beyond their dreams. Borrowing heavily from Wall Street and Glengarry Glen Ross, Boiler Room is at its best when dealing with matters of money, and powerful scenes of Davis learning to be a "closer" showcase the significant talent of Ribisi, Nicky Katt, and Vin Diesel. The movie flounders when developing the relationship between Davis and his father, becoming sentimental and trite. However, as a fable of modern society and a nostalgic vehicle about the days of yuppies past, Boiler Room is right on the money. -- Jenny Brown, Amazon.com --This text refers to another version of this video. Jerry Maguire [1997]Se flere produkter fra AmazonJerry Maguire, the film that launched the careers of writer-director Cameron Crowe and actress Renée Zellwenger, is accurately regarded as one of the best romantic comedies of the 1990s. It's an unconventional tale about the paradoxical nature of success in which a top sports agent (Tom Cruise) is forced to reassess his life when he is unceremoniously dumped by his employer. After falling in love with single mother Dorothy Boyd (Zellwenger), and supported by loyal client and second-rate football star Rod Tidwell (Cuba Gooding Jr.), Maguire attempts to rebuild his fractured life. At times the film's lightweight, pop-sociology view of the hungry nature of the modern day workplace is clichéd to say the least. However, because Crowe is able to develop meaningful characters, his contradictory lunges against capitalism are submerged by the excellent performances of Cruise and company. There are also top notch supporting roles from Zellwenger's screen son Ray (child star Jonathan Lipnicki) and dictatorial older sister Laurel (Bonnie Hunt). On the DVD: Jerry Maguire's animated menus are created in the style of a messy desk with Post-It-Note selection icons but these don't function as anticipated. As well as the audio commentary over the main feature, the bonus disc unnecessarily includes live action visual footage of Cruise, Crowe, Gooding and Zellwenger providing the same remarks. Unfortunately, the visuals only add to irritability of the exclusive banter between the four. There's also a short "making-of" featurette along with Cameron Crow's documentary Drew Rosenhaus: Sports Agent, which highlights the inspiration behind the film's character Bob Sugar. The "Mission Statement", reproduced in its entirety, isn't a quick and easy read. The music video for Bruce Springsteen's "Secret Garden" adds a mellow, atmospheric twist to the bonus disc. There are also exclusive DVD-ROM extras tucked away, including the screenplay and photo gallery. -- John Galilee Inkl. fragt: Ukendt |

CSI: Crime Scene Investigation - Las Vegas - Season 3 Part 1 [2001]Se flere produkter fra AmazonNow firmly established as the top-rated US drama, by its third year CSI: Crime Scene Investigation is a show positively glowing with confidence. Even when individual cases seem either too contrived or too easily resolved, the indefatigable night shift at the Las Vegas PD crime lab always look the part, solving conundrums and discovering microscopic damning evidence while, apparently, never shedding their own loose hair or skin cells all over the supposedly quarantined crime scenes. In reality, Catherine Willows' flowing blonde locks would contaminate any evidence she collected, but in the world of CSI only the bad guys leave body parts behind--the CSIs themselves are so good they're positively pristine. The first 12 episodes of season 3 on this three-disc set present more deliciously bizarre situations for the problem-solving sleuths: cannibalism, snuff movies, dwarfs, death while drag racing, bodies falling from the sky, and various dismemberments all tax the team's acumen. These are all double or multiple-case episodes, though in a characteristic trick of the writing sometimes apparently unrelated murders turn out to be connected (or vice versa, as in "Blood Lust", where a road accident victim is not what he seems, and the death of the driver at the hands of an angry mob is made all the more tragic.) The mix of genuine forensic science with the glossiest Jerry Bruckheimer production values, plus the virtues of a good ensemble cast headed by William Peterson's modern-day Sherlock Holmes, remains as compelling as ever. -- Mark Walker Inkl. fragt: Ukendt |

The Color Purple [1985]Se flere produkter fra AmazonSteven Spielberg, proving he's one of the few modern filmmakers who has the visual fluency to be capable of making a great silent film, took a melodramatic, DW Griffith-inspired approach to filming Alice Walker's novel. His tactics made the film controversial, but also a popular hit. You can argue with the appropriateness of Spielberg's decision, but his astonishing facility with images is undeniable--from the exhilarating and eye-popping opening shots of children playing in paradisiacal purple fields to the way he conveys the brutality of a rape by showing hanging leather belts banging against the head of the shaking bed. In a way it's a shame that Whoopi Goldberg, a stage monologist who made her screen debut in this movie, went on to become so famous, because it was, in part, her unfamiliarity that made her understated performance as Celie so effective. (This may be the first and last time that the adjective understated can be applied to Goldberg.) Nominated for 11 Academy Awards, including best picture and actress (supporting players Oprah Winfrey and Margaret Avery were also nominated), it was quite a scandal--and a crushing blow to Spielberg--when The Color Purple won none. --Jim Emerson Inkl. fragt: Ukendt |

Liberty X - Just A Little [2003]Se flere produkter fra AmazonWith a puny stage set, minimalist lighting and short duration, Liberty X's Just a Little is appropriately titled. This recording of the Cardiff date from their 2003 UK tour does however include all the hits from their debut album ("Thinking it Over", "Doin' It", "Just a Little", "Got to Have Your Love" and "Holding On"), as well as two new songs from their second ("Being Nobody" and "Jumpin'"). It's a lightweight and low-budget show that might have been better padded-out with one of S Club 7's or Steps' favourite live show expanders: getting each member to perform a cover version of a favourite song. To add a bit more razzmatazz, a few more lasers and dancers wouldn't have gone amiss either. That said Tony, Jessica, Kevin, Michelle and Kelli are competent stage performers and no doubt, as their back catalogue expands and the money rolls in, they'll be able to put on future live show extravaganzas. Recognising that the live show was far from extensive, the disc also includes Liberty X's first six promos. Their videos have been always been swish, sophisticated affairs, especially the chic promo for ballad "Holding On". The futuristic video for "Being Nobody"--their alternative-pop collaboration with top underground dance producer Richard X--intelligently parodies the production-line mentality of modern culture. Overall, it's a mixed bag of material, which is likely both to please and disappoint fans. On the DVD: Just a Little may have its shortcomings as a concert DVD, but the disc's layout is excellent. Featuring an array of specially recorded material, each of the sub-menus are personally introduced by a member of the band. The Who Wants to be a Millionaire-style quiz has exclusive footage of the band up for grabs if all ten of the randomly generated questions are answered correctly, while the behind-the-scenes feature provides a unique insight into the origins and success of the band. -- John Galilee Inkl. fragt: Ukendt |

Strictly Sinatra [2001]Se flere produkter fra AmazonPeter Capaldi, the writer and director of the vaguely amusing and almost engaging Strictly Sinatra, seems to have had two recent strains of British film-making on his mind: the Guy Ritchie school of modern mob capers and the post-modern urban Scottish noir of Shallow Grave and Trainspotting. Indeed Kelly MacDonald, who starred in the latter, appears in Strictly Sinatra as a similar rough-around-the-edges love interest. The film revolves around what happens when hapless Glasgow lounge-singer Tony Cocozza (played by the always capable Ian Hart) crosses paths with the local Mafiosi. Their initial mutual attraction is derived from the ability of the parties to support each other's delusions: Cocozza wishes he was Sinatra, they wish they were Sinatra's dubious cronies. But Cocozza swiftly realises that he has, as the song goes, bitten off more than he can chew, and proceeds, predictably enough, from doubt to epiphany to redemption to happy ending.-- Andrew Mueller Inkl. fragt: Ukendt |

Dawson's Creek: The Best of Seasons 1 and 2 [1998]Se flere produkter fra AmazonDawson's Creek is, first and foremost, one of the defining shows about teen angst and complicated teenage relationships. The first two seasons were the classic ones, as Dawson oscillates in his affections between beautiful Jen and his best friend Joey and manages to fall entirely between two stools. This is a show in which indecision and failure to commit is always going to lead to nothing good, however uncertain the prospects of commitment. Michelle Williams as Jen and Katie Holmes as Joey provide the show with its emotional centre of quirky intensity. James Van Der Beek as the essentially unreliable Dawson provides good looks and a hang-dog complexity of feeling to the mix, while Joshua Jackson as his sidekick Pacey provides both reliable comic relief and a sense of more depth to come in the show's later seasons. This "Best of Seasons 1 and 2" provides good examples of what the show does best. From Season 1, "The Scare" is a finely judged commentary on teen horror films--the show's creator Kevin Williamson was also responsible for the Scream franchise--and "Beauty Contest" is a finely judged social comedy about the show's high-toned resort community. Other strands in "Beauty Contest" lead in Season 2 to the brief Joey-Dawson relationship in "The Kiss" and to its aftermath in "His Leading Lady", where Dawson directs Rachael Lee Cook as Devon in a movie script based sufficiently closely on earlier episodes that she reprises Joey's actual lines. Dawson's Creek is essential teen soap, savvy enough in its post-modern edge to play well with self-parody and intertextuality.-- Roz Kaveney Inkl. fragt: Ukendt |

Bangkok Haunted [2001]Se flere produkter fra AmazonAn old-fashioned omnibus spooker, Bangkok Haunted is framed by scenes in which three young, apparently modern Thai women sit in a deserted cafe on a rainy night and tell each other their own ghost stories. "Legend of the Drum" is closest in style to traditional Far Eastern horror, with an antique dealer troubled by a drum that seems to invoke the spirit of a girl who disappeared 80 years ago after befriending and then rejecting a hooded, disfigured outcast. "Black Magic Woman" is a more lurid tale in video nasty style, about a girl who uses an extract of corpses as an aphrodisiac perfume with unpleasant consequences for her lovers--who have spells of vomiting, demon possession or become psychotic ghosts. Oxide Pang, director of The Eye, takes over from Pisuth Praesaengaim for the final episode, "Revenge", about a cop investigating the death-by-hanging of a young woman with whom he was involved and learning nasty things in the process. Though each 45-minute story is a tad overextended, the film is full of genuinely creepy moments, ranging from delicate ghost scares to splatter gruel. -- Kim Newman Inkl. fragt: Ukendt |

Peter Gabriel - PlaySe flere produkter fra AmazonPeter Gabriel has long been revered for his great songwriting, cinematic soundscapes, riveting concerts, and groundbreaking videos. Is it any surprise, then, that Play: The Videos is a music DVD for the ages? Nope. But that doesn't make it any less thrilling to watch or to listen to. Gabriel has assembled and polished an evening-filling 26 clips, all of them collaborations with innovative visual artists and directors like Stephen Johnson, Matt Mahurin, Francois Vogel, and Sean Penn. From the 1977 promo for "Modern Love" to 2003's "Growing Up" and much between, it's all here, and most viewers will be pleasantly surprised to find more than a couple videos they missed along the way. The focus is explicitly on conceptual pieces, the lone visual exception being a 2004 live rendition of "Games Without Frontiers" among the extras. Gabriel says in an accompanying essay that "music can stand more repetition than video and music together." Play gives us something extra in light of that: fresh 5.1 surround mixes in both Dolby Digital and DTS 96/24 for every track, with Gabriel/U2 production vet Daniel Lanois at the helm for most songs. (You'll get standard DTS sound from DTS-capable DVD players and, even better, lossless high-resolution audio from a DTS 96/24-compatible player.) The surround mixes are nothing short of revelatory, using all available channels to amplify Gabriel's ambient side while breaking out the percussion in fascinating ways and driving home the music's subterranean bass. --Michael Mikesell Inkl. fragt: Ukendt |

Janacek: Kat'a Kabanova -- Glyndebourne [1988]Se flere produkter fra AmazonKát'a Kabanová, Janácek's 1921 tragedy, is proof if any were needed that tales of personal oppression and turmoil will always make fine raw material for opera composers. Janácek took Ostrovsky's tumultuous drama of infidelity , The Storm, and created a compelling piece in which his music heightens the relationship between the troubled landscape of Kát'a's inner mind and the elements doing battle outside. In 1988, this Glyndebourne Festival production successfully distilled the heroine's wretched journey from put-upon wife and daughter-in-law to suicide via the ecstasy of a forbidden love affair into 100 minutes of intensely emotional operatic drama. At its heart, Janácek's unique tonal score underlines a powerful, almost naturalistic dialogue and exposes the impact of Kát'a's experiences on her escalating self-destruction. Felicity Palmer's Kabanicha--the mother-in-law from hell and the real instrument of Kát'a's downfall--is curiously remote and muted rather than the domineering figure of fear that we might expect. But the singing, particularly by Nancy Gustafson (tremendously affecting and emotionally convincing in the title role) and Ryland Davies as Kát'a's weak husband Tichon, is outstanding. Gustafson's performance alone makes this essential viewing for anybody with a passion for the great modern soprano roles. On the DVD: Sadly the only additional features are trailers for Seven Gates of Jersualem and The Damnation of Faust. The sound quality (PCM stereo) is more than fair, but inevitably the film of the production is constrained by the design: the stylised set is either very light or very dark and we don't get as close as we'd like to the characters in what is, after all, a disturbingly intimate piece. Arthaus Musik's booklet meets the expected high standards of information and background. -- Piers Ford Inkl. fragt: Ukendt |

The Fabulous Baker Boys [1990]Se flere produkter fra AmazonAn inspired casting gimmick, a wonderful mood, a grown-up love story--all this in The Fabulous Baker Boys, but the only thing anybody ever talks about is Michelle Pfeiffer on top of a piano. Granted, it's a showstopper: clad in a slinky dress, Pfeiffer rolls around on the Steinway while she purrs out a languid version of "Makin' Whoopee". Adding to the seductive vibe is the fact that she's not singing to the audience, but to the sullen piano player (Jeff Bridges) whose fancy she has captured. Bridges and his real-life brother, Beau, play two lounge entertainers whose act has grown stale; they're not above doing "Feelings" for the tourist crowd. They've hired songbird Pfeiffer (who does her own sexy singing) to spice up the routine, a strategy that pays off in spades. The three actors are terrific, with the fabulous Bridges boys playing neatly off their own sibling rhythms. Writer-director Steve Kloves captures the feel of second-rate Seattle clubs, and Dave Grusin's jazzy score keeps propelling the film forward. The story itself might have come from a 1940s romance, yet Kloves and his actors keep it unusually modern and thoughtful. And then there's Michelle Pfeiffer rolling around on top of a piano.... --Robert Horton Inkl. fragt: Ukendt |

Whatever Happened To The Likely Lads - The Very Best Of Whatever Happened To The Likely Lads [1973]Se flere produkter fra AmazonWhatever Happened to the Likely Lads was actually a revival, in 1973, of the successful Dick Clements/Ian La Frenais 1960s comedy The Likely Lads, so notable for its fibrous but sympathetic treatment of life for two young men coming of age in North East England. This "Very Best of" collection brings together classic episodes from the 1973 series. Although tinged with nostalgia--the décor and styles of the early 1970s are almost pungently evocative--the quality of the writing defies the passage of time. Seven years on from their initial adventures, Rodney Bewes (upwardly mobile, self-improving Bob) and James Bolam (feckless, chippy Terry) meet by accident on the train. Bob is about to marry Thelma and move into modern semi-detached heaven, while Terry is just out of the army and drifting back home without a great deal of purpose. The relationship between the two men, basically sound but frequently compromised by their very different aspirations, is very cleverly drawn and played so that your sympathies never stay on one side for very long. Best of all, Brigit Forsyth's Thelma, a dragon in the making, adds an astringent dynamic. She is, says Terry, "so stuck up she thinks her backside's a perfume factory". The insecurity he generates in her is responsible for much of the comedy. On the DVD: The Very Best of Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads comes to disc with no extras, simply standard 4:3 picture format video production and episode selection. But it's still fresh as a daisy all the same. -- Piers Ford Inkl. fragt: Ukendt |

I'm Not There [2007]Se flere produkter fra AmazonUnapologetically audacious, I'm Not There is more post-modern puzzle than by-the-numbers biopic. A title card sets the scene: "Inspired by the music and many lives of Bob Dylan." Yet the film features no figure by that name. Instead, writer/director Todd Haynes presents six characters, each incarnating different stages in the artist's career. Perfume's Ben Whishaw, a black-clad poet, serves as a slippery sort of narrator. The action begins with the wanderings of an 11-year-old black runaway named "Woody Guthrie" (Marcus Carl Franklin)--his raucous duet with Richie Havens on "Tombstone Blues" is a highlight--and ends with a silver-haired Billy the Kid (Richard Gere) watching the Old West die before his eyes. In the interim, there's the folk singer-turned-preacher (Christian Bale), the actor (Heath Ledger), and the rock star (Cate Blanchett, who has Don't Look Back Dylan down to a science). The chronology is purposefully non-linear, and editor Jay ! Rabinowitz cuts rapidly, Jean-Luc Godard-style, between cinéma vérité black-and-white and saturated colour, Richard Lester-like slapstick and Fellini-inspired surrealism (Ed Lachman served as cinematographer). What makes the picture fun for Dylan fans--and potentially frustrating for neophytes--is that every album and movie bears an alternate title. Ledger's Robbie, for instance, stars in "Grain of Sand," actually a reference to the Pete Seeger song. As in Haynes' glam rock reverie Velvet Goldmine, the trickery involves the entire cast. While Julianne Moore plays former lover Alice, a dead ringer for Joan Baez, Michelle Williams embodies elusive scenester Coco, i.e. Edie Sedgwick. If I'm Not There is less affecting than Control, the year's other big music film, it rewards repeat viewings like few biographical features. The soundtrack mixes originals with covers, like Jim James's heartfelt "Goin' to Acapulco." -- Kathleen C. Fennessy Inkl. fragt: Ukendt |

Naked Gun Trilogy [1988]Se flere produkter fra AmazonConsidering the TV series Police Squad managed a mere six episodes, it's no small testament to its qualities that it proved the inspiration for a trio of cinematic hits. And this bringing together of all three Naked Gun films delivers, as the original series did, a belly-load of laughs. Each is a spoof, very much in the spirit of the original Airplane (unsurprising, as the same people are involved), with the focus this time being on Leslie Nielsen's Lt Frank Drebin, a well-meaning yet chaotic detective who, along with George Kennedy's Capt Ed Hocken, O.J.Simpson's Nordberg and Priscilla Presley's Jane finds himself with crimes to solve, and nothing but sheer ineptitude to help him. The plot in each movie clearly takes a back seat, as each film is an exercise in throwing as many gags at the wall and hoping they stick. The hit rate in the first of the three is high enough to genuinely warrant it being a modern day comedy classic, with clever sight gags and more elaborate sequences keeping the chuckle count high and constant. Neither sequel gets close to it, but both do have their moments too. Crucially, as none of the films outstays its welcome, thanks to their relatively brief running times, each emerges as an enjoyable, joyfully silly and frequently funny comedy, set to be enjoyed time and time again.-- Simon Brew Inkl. fragt: Ukendt |

Great Composers - Bach / Mozart [1997]Se flere produkter fra AmazonThe BBC TV series Great Composers, broadcast in 1997, takes an introductory look at key figures of European classical music. Bach (1685-1750) is a difficult composer to survey historically, partly because his life as a professional musician was restricted to several provincial German towns. Yet the vast body of music he produced is well covered, with a representative sample performed mainly on instruments of Bach's day. There's also consideration of his cultural importance as the effective progenitor of modern European music and enough anecdotal evidence to suggest a lively, combative personality in his own right. The life of Mozart (1756-1791) is easier to document, with his years as a child prodigy travelling the European cultural circuit, the difficult adolescent years in Salzburg and Paris and the rise and fall of his freelance career in Vienna all amply illustrated here. Again, a well-chosen selection of music, accompanied by thought-provoking comments from a range of musicians and historians, gently exploding the myth of the Amadeus film in the process. This is informal, informing, and worth acquiring. On the DVD: The disc offers crisp Dolby 2.0 stereo and 4:3 ratio, with generous and well-chosen access points--13 for Bach, 16 for Mozart. Subtitles are offered in five languages, and you'll need to select the English option so that the German and Italian speaking contributors come with translation. Those with DVD-ROM can additionally access up-to-date articles on these composers. -- Richard Whitehouse Inkl. fragt: Ukendt |
