The Producers [2005]Se flere produkter fra AmazonThe film-of-the-musical-of-the-film, The Producers unites the hit Broadway pairing of Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick, drafts in Uma Thurman, and somewhere along the way loses half the fun that made the original movie and the Broadway show such a success. Under the watchful eye of creator Mel Brooks, this may be a musical version but it tells the same tale--two men stumble across a great way to make money, by putting on a Broadway flop. So off they go to devise the most offensive, sure-fire failure, only to see their creation-- Springtime For Hitler--become the town's hot ticket. While there's undoubtedly some fun to be had here, and Lane and Broderick are clearly have a great time in their roles, there are a couple of key problems with The Producers. Firstly, and most crucially, is the staid direction. This very much feels like a camera was placed in front of a stage, and it hurts the film a lot. Secondly, the wonderful energy of Mel Brooks' original movie is sadly lacking, and at no time does this no version threaten to be an equal to its predecessor. And yet there are winning moments, some good laughs, and a gentle couple of hours of entertainment. Yet the key attraction is clearly a chance for the majority who never got to see Lane and Broderick treading the boards in their acclaimed performances before, and for many, that rightly justifies the asking price. You just can't help wishing the film around them was a little better, though.-- Simon Brew Inkl. fragt: Ukendt |

Puccini: Tosca -- La Scala/Muti [2000]Se flere produkter fra AmazonTosca was revived to great acclaim at La Scala in this 2000 production, which built on Luca Ronconi's 1996 version with musical direction from principal conductor Riccardo Muti and Lorenza Cantini's nightmarishly distorted set. Puccini's most recorded opera is loved and derided in equal measure for its high-octane dramatics, rich arias and the fire-spitting exchanges of the eponymous heroine and her wily tormentor Scarpia. Under Muti, the music takes precedence over the self-conscious theatricality of the book. As a result, some high dramatic points--the stabbing, always tricky, and Tosca's suicide, equally dicey--are underplayed here. Singers of the calibre of Maria Guleghina and baritone Leo Nucci can be relied upon for rounded, controlled performances. Guleghina eschews the ferocity of Callas for a less stately, earthier honesty and enjoys moments of great delicacy, particularly in a sweet "Vissi d'arte". And her grief at Cavaradossi's death is searing. The key to Tosca, though, is the ambivalent relationship between the singer and the chief of police. Scarpia is probably the most toxic antihero in opera, and Nucci could do with a touch more virulence. Even so, this is a fascinating production that strips away much of the traditional artifice and gives real insight into the complex emotions that make the opera so compelling for its devotees. On the DVD: Tosca, like so many operas recorded in the theatre, here relies on the performances to compensate for the camera's inability to convey the overall majesty of the production. The 16:9 anamorphic picture format gives no more than a hint of the crushing power of Cantini's set. Happily, the choice of Dolby Digital 5.1 or DTS 5.1 surround sound means there is no compromise on the sound front. Orchestra, chorus and principals unite in a fluid homage to Puccini's score. There are no extras on the DVD. One minor niggle: careless editing of the booklet notes means that Puccini briefly becomes Verdi in the description of the opera's genesis. -- Piers Ford Inkl. fragt: Ukendt |

The Life Aquatic With Steve ZissouSe flere produkter fra AmazonIn The Life Aquatic, director Wes Anderson takes his familiar stable of actors on a field trip to a fantasy aquarium, complete with stop-motion, candy-striped crabs and rainbow seahorses. And though Anderson does expand his horizons in terms of retro-special effects and a whimsical use of color, fans will otherwise find themselves in well-charted waters. As The Life Aquatic opens, Zissou (Bill Murray), a self-involved, Jacques Cousteau-like filmmaker, has just released a documentary depicting the death of his best friend Esteban, who was eaten by some sort of sea creature--possibly a jaguar shark. Zissou's troubles also include his waning popularity with the public, and a nemesis (Jeff Goldblum) who hogs up all the grant money. Hope arrives in the form of Ned Plimpton (Owen Wilson), an amiable Kentuckian who may be Zissou's son. Despite his lack of enthusiasm for fatherhood, Zissou welcomes Ned--and Ned in turn saves Zissou's new documentary (in which he seeks revenge on the jaguar shark) in more ways than one. One of Wes Anderson's greatest achievements as a director to date has been launching the autumnal melancholy phase of Bill Murray's career, starting with Rushmore in 1998, and Murray delivers a similarly comedic yet low-key performance here. Unfortunately, Zissou is one of the few characters in this ensemble to achieve multi-dimensionality. Even co-star Wilson doesn't get to develop Ned much beyond Noble Southerner, and he ends up seeming more like a prop for illustrating Zissou's emotional development rather than his own man. The Life Aquatic probably won't be remembered as a great film, but it is still one that no Anderson (or Murray) fan can afford to miss. --Leah Weathersby, Amazon.com Inkl. fragt: Ukendt |

That 70s Show - Series 7 - Complete [2004]Se flere produkter fra AmazonThe old saying that the more things change, the more things stay the same seems almost custom-built for the seventh series of the popular sitcom That '70s Show. Not only did the 2004-2005 season mark the departure of its two biggest stars--Topher Grace and Ashton Kutcher, who left to embark on their movie careers--but Hyde (Danny Masterson) meets his biological father (Tim Reid) and sister (Megalyn Echikunwoke); Red (Kurtwood Smith) ends his financial worries by opening a muffler shop; and Fez (Wilmer Valderamma) moves in with Kelso (Kutcher) to provide a "safe" home for his baby. Old faces make return engagements as well, including Midge Pinciotti (Tanya Roberts), Kelso's brother Casey (Luke Wilson), who coaches Eric through a remedial gym course, and Leo (Tommy Chong), who offers to help Kelso with his daughter. There's also a new member of the gang (Bret Harrison), a new blonde look for Donna, and plenty of fun guest stars (Lindsay Lohan as a potential love interest for Fez, Eliza Dushku as a scheming intern at Hyde's father's radio station, and Brooke Shields, The Office: An American Workplace's Jenna Fischer, and Bob Newhart Show vet Jack Riley). And if the show's loose and bawdy charm seems to have dimmed a bit in these episodes, the comfortable interplay between the cast members still feels the banter of real friends and family, which remains the key to the show's long-running appeal. The four-disc Season 7 set includes light-hearted commentary by director David Trainor, who waxes effusively about his cast on three episodes (season opener "Time Is On My Side," "Angie," and season finale "Till the Next Goodbye"). Behind the Polyester is a short chat with the show's executive producers on developing the seventh season, and there's a capsule review of the season's shenanigans, as well as promos for all of its episodes. Finally, the underpraised Don Stark (perennially clueless Bob Pinciotti) reminiscences about his favorite moments from the show, especially his garish outfits and headgear. -- Paul Gaita, Inkl. fragt: Ukendt |

I Heart Huckabees [2004]Se flere produkter fra AmazonBilled as "an existential comedy," I Heart Huckabees is a flawed yet endearingly audacious screwball romp that dares to ponder life's biggest questions. Much of director David O. Russell's philosophical humor is dense, talky, and impenetrable, leading critic Roger Ebert to observe that "it leaves the viewer out of the loop," and suggesting that Russell's screenplay (written with his assistant, Jeff Baena) is admirably bold yet frustratingly undisciplined. Russell's ideas are big but his expression of them is frenetic, centering on the unlikely pairing of an environmentalist (Jason Schwartzman) and a firefighter (Mark Wahlberg) as they depend on existential detectives (Lily Tomlin, Dustin Hoffman) and a French nihilist (Isabelle Huppert) to make sense of their existential crises, brought on (respectively) by a two-faced chain-store executive (Jude Law) and his spokesmodel girlfriend (Naomi Watts), and the aftermath of 9/11's terrorism. No brief description can do justice to Russell's comedic conceit; you'll either be annoyed and mystified or elated and delighted by this wacky primer for coping with 21st century lunacy. Deserving of its mixed reviews, I Heart Huckabees is an audacious mess, like life itself, and accepting that is the key to enjoying both. --Jeff Shannon Inkl. fragt: Ukendt |

Robin Of Sherwood - The Complete Series 1 [1984]Se flere produkter fra AmazonThe 1984 incarnation of Robin of Sherwood had a crucial ingredient that the traditional tale previously lacked: magic. Creator Richard Carpenter combined his knowledge of Medieval England with a rich store of Arthurian-style folklore to create a world where wizards and witches rub shoulders with Norman knights and Anglo-Saxon peasants. Michael Praed's enthusiastic performance in the lead is matched by the sheer energy of all involved. There may be pauses for a spiritual tête á tête with forest demi-god Herne the Hunter, but swordplay and archery are never far behind. Wrapped in the forest's gorgeous greens and pools of shadow the show maintained a perfectly believable look, supported by what should have been (but wasn't) glaringly anachronistic music from Clannad. Best of all, however, is the crackling dialogue that still makes for compelling (and magical) viewing, especially when it comes from guest actors such as John Rhys-Davies as King Richard. On the DVD: Contained here are all six episodes of Season One. The two-part pilot is a terrific introduction to the familiar characters such as Ray Winstone's roughhouse Will Scarlet and unexpected new ones such as Mark Ryan as Nasir, "the Boba Fett of Sherwood". Camaraderie on-screen and off was legendary. It's rare to see a cast having so much fun. This exceptional three-disc box set features one of the best extras packages any TV show has been given. The original 4:3 picture is enhanced for 16:9, but the new Dolby Surround track is the real delight (the show was broadcast in mono). Quickie fare includes key cast biographies, Clannad's promo video, 175 photos and eight minutes of genuinely hilarious outtakes. The real meat comes from the misty-eyed yet fact-filled commentaries from creator Richard Carpenter and director Ian Sharp on four of the episodes. They're only just eclipsed by a brand-new hour-long documentary interviewing everyone involved. Finally, the 1983 Electric Theatre Show 25-minute documentary on the making of the show explores the character' Inkl. fragt: Ukendt |

Rosemary Conley's Ultimate Whole Body WorkoutSe flere produkter fra AmazonWhen dieting guru Rosemary Conley declares that the Ultimate Whole Body Workout is her last fitness video, cynics might either be relieved that the population is finally to be spared her evangelical diet-speak, or conclude that she's "past it". However, this programme is not so easily dismissed. There might be nothing new here, but there is no doubt that a great deal of Conley's success comes from her ability to motivate. Conley first runs through the key moves featured in the work-outs, cleverly eliminating the problem of figuring it out during the sessions--and the risk of giving up. The 35-minute aerobic workout and the 20-minute body conditioning session are designed to be done on alternative days, while the final chair programme is for those with limited mobility (including pregnant women) who still want to burn calories. With no expense spared on the original soundtrack, a series of pop hits make this all the more easy to go along with. Conley punctuates her instruction with references to members of her backing team and their weight-loss successes. This is a work-out for the woman committed to being slim against all odds, and for whom dieting is likely to be a lifestyle.-- Lorna V Inkl. fragt: Ukendt |

American Dreamz [2006]Se flere produkter fra AmazonA sadly muddled and unsatisfying film, American Dreamz is beset by an identity crisis it never manages to answer. On paper, it's promising, if hardly radical. Hugh Grant plays the host of a top-rated American talent show. On his quest for ratings, he casts his net far and wide hunting for hopefuls, bringing in the likes of Mandy Moore as he does so. And a wannabe terrorist too. Which doesn't really make too much sense when you watch it either. Throw in an insecure President of the United States--played by Dennis Quaid--who finds himself, thanks to his key adviser (Willem Dafoe) as a guest judge on the show, and you have something of a mess. What's most surprising is that behind the camera is Paul Weitz, who's of late built upon his initial success with American Pie and brought us the excellent About A Boy (which again starred Grant), and the woefully-underrated In Good Company (which starred Quaid). Yet he's simply unable to work his magic here, as the film simply fails to gel. As a satire, it's targets are too soft and obvious, as a broad comedy it lacks laughs, and even as a straight hour and a half of easy entertainment, it's far too jumbled to be able to relax and enjoy. There may be an argument that in the midst of all of this is a decent enough movie struggling to break through. But the point is that it doesn't, and given the calibre and curriculum vitaes of some of those involved, American Dreamz has to be classed as a crushing disappointment. -- Simon Brew Inkl. fragt: Ukendt |

The 39 Steps [1935]Se flere produkter fra AmazonA high point of Hitchcock's pre-Hollywood career, 1935's The Thirty-Nine Steps is the first and best of three film versions of John Buchann's rather stiff novel. Robert Donat plays the rancher embroiled in a plot to steal British military secrets. He finds himself on the run; falsely accused of murder, while also pursuing the dastardly web of spies alluded to in the title. With a plot whose twists and turns match the hilly Scottish terrain in which much of the film is set, The Thirty-Nine Steps combines a breezy suavity with a palpable psychological tension. Hitchcock was already a master at conveying such tension through his cinematic methods, rather than relying just on situation or dialogue. Sometimes his ways of bringing the best out of his actors brought the worst out in himself. If the scene in which Donat is handcuffed to co-star Madeline Carroll has a certain edge, for instance, that's perhaps because the director mischievously cuffed them together in a rehearsal, then left them attached for a whole afternoon, pretending to have lost the key. The movie also introduces Hitchcock's favoured plot device, the "McGuffin" (here, the military secret), the unexplained device or "non-point" on which the movie turns. -- David Stubbs Inkl. fragt: Ukendt |

Sleepy Hollow [2000]Se flere produkter fra AmazonThe secret to "getting" Tim Burton's Sleepy Hollow is appreciating that it's the film he's wanted to make his whole life. After the intimately expressive Edward Scissorhands, this is his most personal venture. Burton's Gothic style--apparent through all his work--stems from a childhood misspent watching the horror movies of Roger Corman, Hammer studios, and anything featuring his idol Vincent Price. For Sleepy Hollow Burton surrounded himself with his usual collaborators and friends; the production was almost entirely shot on location outside London to reunite him with key members of the crew he'd used a decade earlier in Batman, and also to capture the atmosphere of Hammer horror on its own turf. Johnny Depp's Constable Ichabod Crane warmly emulates the mannerisms and enunciation of Peter Cushing. In a prologue scene Burton plays out a long-held fantasy by pitting Depp against Christopher Lee. And it is fantasy that categorises the film throughout, from the mythical fireside telling of the Hessian Horseman's origin (a mesmerising Christopher Walken), to the bright spots of colour saturating Crane's childhood dreams (featuring Burton's real-life love Lisa Marie). These moments literally shine out amid a meticulously crafted look for the film, which underwent a bleaching process to tone things down to an almost monochrome hue. The Scooby Doo-like whodunnit plot, concerning family lineage and petty vengeance, is naturally secondary to what Burton is aiming to achieve through photography and performance, which includes expressive cameos from Michael Gambon, Michael Gough, Jeffrey Jones, and Iain McDiarmid. Yet despite all these subtleties, it's also his best action movie: the swordplay betters anything from his earlier work, while the windmill escape and subsequent coach chase is truly breathtaking in choreography and execution. If you find a cheesy grin on your face for most of the film, you've "got" it. If not, see Hammer's Dracula at once! -- Paul Tonks Inkl. fragt: Ukendt |

The Undertones - The Story Of The Undertones - Teenage Kicks [2003]Se flere produkter fra AmazonThe first few minutes of Teenage Kicks is as much an account of the unbridled influence of John Peel on the British music industry as the story of The Undertones themselves. The mythological tale, destined to be quoted in pop music almanacs for forever, of how Peel discovered the band dominates the early parts of the feature. It's no surprise, then, that Peel presents this 70-minute documentary, successfully using his influence to involve all the original members, even though continued bitterness between former singer Fergal Sharkey and the other four is evident throughout. While John O'Neill, Damian O'Neill, Michael Bradley and Billy Doherty opt to be interviewed in their home city of Derry, Sharkey chooses the more neutral territory of Peel Acres. Although many fans share Peel's enthusiasm for their most famous song, "Teenage Kicks", the documentary touches on the band's bemusement at their posthumous elevation to rock legend status. Their lack of pretentiousness still shines through, as they recount stories of how they returned to their parents' houses after performances on Top of the Pops, and how they still hold day jobs despite top ranking at international pop festivals. Part of their enduring down-to-earth appeal also reflected here is that The Undertones emerged from Northern Ireland during the height of the troubles. Overall though, the feature provides only a sketchy account of the band's development and continued existence, preferring the band members' own narrative of key events. On the DVD: Teenage Kicks on disc includes 45 minutes of additional interviews, along with exclusive live footage. Like a lot of the material included in the main feature, the extra interview footage is only likely to appeal to die-hard fans. Seven promos (restored and mixed in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound) are also featured, including the recently discovered video for "There Goes Norman". The early videos are basic, and appear to re-create their stage routine from early gigs at Derry's Casbah ("Teenage Kicks" and Inkl. fragt: Ukendt |
