So for Iris, his first film as a director, Richard Eyre avoids the problematic novels and instead alternates the two phases of Murdoch's life as related by her widower John Bayley in his books Iris: A Memoir and Elegy for Iris. We see the headstrong and captivating Oxford undergraduate with academia at her feet, drawn to the gauche Bayley on account of his sincerity and understanding of what she needs to achieve for herself. Kate Winslet has the right combination of vibrancy and thoughtfulness for the young Iris, with Hugh Bonneville sympathetic as Bayley. The other phase reveals Murdoch near the end of her life, struggling to complete what would be her final novel and fulfil her public engagements as she succumbs to the effects of Alzheimer's disease. Judy Dench has given numerous fine screen performances, but none as gripping nor so heart-rending as the ageing writer who withdraws into her own world--to the consternation, anger, then acceptance of her husband, movingly played by Jim Broadbent. Cameos from such actors as Eleanor Bron and Timothy West add to the overall quality, as does Eyre's lucid script, atmospheric location filming in and around Oxford, and an attractively low-key score from James Horner. Murdoch's novels may in future receive the kind of filmic presentation that does them justice. This sprawling Baroque manor near Oxford provides an ideal setting for swooping, atmospheric camerawork, with the casually-attired Cullum acting as an incongruous focal point. Jamie commands the stage space with a confidence that belies his tender years, ignoring the usual limitations of the performer's body. He's often found under the piano, or dancing on top of its lid, or even inside, using the entire instrument as a percussion tool. He's constantly running around the stage, interacting with his band, bounding down to shake hands with the front rows. This is an exhaustive record of where Cullum's stage show currently stands. It's a lesson in how to entertain an audience whilst maintaining musical integrity. Jamie is modest about his jazz credentials but has excellent taste when recruiting his regular team of bassist Geoff Gascoyne and drummer Sebastiaan De Kromm. Cullum's horn section also boasts the presence of trombonist Barnaby Dickinson and saxophonist Ben Castle, two of the UK scene's brightest newcomers. The camerawork doesn't distract, but still has a dynamic sense, managing to keep track of Cullum's antics from a variety of quick-edit angles. There isn't much preamble, with the concert presented in straightforward manner. In-between each cluster of songs, there's a selection of documentary inserts, showing Jamie on tour in the USA, playing at Glastonbury, paying homage to the 1950s beat poets and meeting his (mostly female) autograph hunters. "I wonder if it's possible that I could touch your arse?," asks one, but we don't get to hear his reply. Extras include the trio busking in San Francisco (with no audience gathered, funnily enough), more Glastonbury footage, an excerpt from the South Bank Show special and the videos of "All At Sea", "These Are The Days" and "The Wind Cries Mary". --Martin Longley Fragt: Ukendt! |

But their efforts--including a terrifying attempt at exorcism--only push Jess further away. Jess eventually understands that the only way to survive is to escape, and she sets her sights on a place at Oxford. Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit is both a broad comedy and a moving coming-of-age story. Charlotte Coleman is perfect as the teenage Jess, attempting to reconcile her religious devotion and her adolescent passion, but the film belongs to Geraldine McEwan as Jess' mother. McEwan obviously relishes Winterson's script, and she creates a character both monstrous, ridiculous and surprisingly sympathetic. It's a difficult role to carry off, but McEwan succeeds.
