Mystery Alaska [1999]Se flere produkter fra AmazonDavid E Kelley's script for Mystery, Alaska (co-authored by Sean O'Byrne) takes his Ally McBeal level of eccentricity to a geographical and spiritual extreme. The film revives the hackneyed Rocky formula, setting a lopsided hockey match within a remote, self-contained hamlet where the members of a tiny population all have to wear multiple hats and still keep neighbourly ties intact. The story concerns the town's chief source of identity and pride: so-called "Saturday games", in which local men divide into teams and play pond hockey for the locals. When a prodigal son (Hank Azaria) of Mystery shows up with a television network offer to bring the New York Rangers in for a televised match against the homegrown team, the town fathers agree. Coaching falls to the town sheriff, John Biebe (Russell Crowe), an admirable man and a long-time player recently bumped from the team. John, however, doesn't want the job: everyone knows the real coach in those parts is Judge Burns (Burt Reynolds), but he wants no part of it either. All of that changes after a sad tragedy forces everyone to revaluate their positions and pull together in order to beat the Rangers. Following the success of Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery, Jay Roach proves to be an able director of drama, swift action and low-key, character-driven comedy not unlike that in Benton's Nobody's Fool. He has to deal with some pure corn at the end, but Roach pulls it off and guides the actors to and through far better moments. -- Tom Keogh, Amazon.com Inkl. fragt: Ukendt |

Peter Gabriel - Growing UpSe flere produkter fra AmazonPeter Gabriel: Growing Up Live presents the complete 2003 Milan concert from Peter Gabriel's tour based around the album Up, featuring 17 tracks across 133 minutes. Performing "in the round", literally central to a memorable show is a revolving stage which sees Gabriel going for a cycle ride in an exuberant "Solsbury Hill", "Growing Up" inside a Zorb ball and delivering a gravity-defying sky walk "Downside Up" with daughter Melanie. Accompanied by regular sidemen David Rhodes (guitar) and Tony Levin (bass), Gabriel is joined by the legendary Blind Boys of Alabama for the spine-tingling finale of "Blue Sky", throughout mixing recent tracks like the abrasive "Darkness" and "The Barry Williams Show" with established crowd pleasers such as "Red Rain", "In Your Eyes" and "Sledgehammer". Gabriel may be less wired than before, but he commands the arena with effortless charm and charismatic presence, his voice retaining all its paradoxically fragile power. Presented in the main with an understated blue light and shot in an unobtrusive, gimmick-free style, the concert begins and ends in virtual darkness with Gabriel alone at a keyboard; from the opening "Here Comes the Flood" to the final "Father and Son", Growing Up is rock theatre of rare intimacy, emotion and intelligence. On the DVD: Peter Gabriel: Growing Up Live is presented with a flawless 16:9 anamorphically enhanced picture and three soundtracks: rich and clear stereo, excellent Dolby Digital 5.1 and even more precise and detailed DTS. The Story of Growing Up is polished nine-minute documentary in which Gabriel talks about his ideas for the tour and the presentation of some of the songs. Tony Levin's View (five minutes) sets the song "More Than This" to photos taken by the bass player. Finally there are six sets of subtitles, including English. --Gary S Dalkin Inkl. fragt: Ukendt |

G3 - Live In ConcertSe flere produkter fra AmazonYes, it's a plank-spanker's dream. In October 1996, three legendary guitarists--Joe Satriani, Eric Johnson and Steve Vai--toured as G3, a kind of super-roadshow featuring their own bands and, as in the last section of this recording, finally coming together onstage for a few numbers. One of the reasons why the whole package works so well is that Satriani's dirtyish techno-blues style, Johnson's limpid near-jazziness and Vai's pyrotechnics manage to seem poles apart yet entirely compatible at the same time, both as individual elements and as a frontline trio (although Johnson inevitably gets sidelined occasionally during the latter set). There are plenty of good tunes, although Johnson's "Manhattan", in which he switches from plectrum lead to gentle thumb-strums seemingly in mid-bar is outstanding, as is the trio's tour-de-force rendering of Frank Zappa's "My Guitar Wants to Kill Your Mama", Vai of course being a Zappa band veteran. On the DVD: Extra features are thin on the ground. There's a set of scrolling biographies (which don't understand the remote's "scan" command, so they go--by--very--slowly) but nothing else to speak of. In the end the playing is the thing on any outing like this, so just enjoy it. --Roger Thomas Inkl. fragt: Ukendt |

Shooter [2007]Se flere produkter fra AmazonA movie that would not have been out of place in the run of paranoid-political thrillers of the 1970s, Shooter works an entertaining variation on the assassination picture. Mark Wahlberg, carrying over good mojo from The Departed, slides neatly into the character of Bob Lee Swagger, master marksman. Swagger has retreated from his duty as an off-the-books hired gun for the military, having become disillusioned with his government (switching on his TV at his remote mountain cabin, he mutters, "Let's see what kind of lies they're trying to sell us today."). Ah, but the government needs Swagger to scope out the location of a rumored attempt on the life of the president, so a shadowy government operative (Danny Glover) begs Swagger to use his sniper's skills to out-fox the assassin. From there--well, spoilers are not fair, since the movie has a few legitimate shocks and a very nice wrong-man scenario about to unfold. A novel by the Washington Post's Pulitzer Prize-winning film critic Stephen Hunter gives the movie a logical spine, even if the premise itself is the stuff of conspiracy theorists. Wahlberg gets support from Michael Pena, as a skeptical FBI agent; Kate Mara, as a trustworthy widow; and Ned Beatty, trailing along memories of Network, as a supremely cynical Senator. Along with the well-executed action sequences (the previously unreliable director Antoine Fuqua gets it in gear here), the movie includes a few potshots at the Bush administration. No, that doesn't put Shooter at the level of The Parallax View or All the President's Men, but it provides some tang along with the flying bullets. --Robert Horton Inkl. fragt: Ukendt |

Northern Exposure - Season 6 - Complete [1994]Se flere produkter fra AmazonAnd so, the sun sets on Cicely, Alaska. While Northern Exposure somewhat jumped the moose in its last season, there are enough characteristically "weird, almost surreal" moments to make season 6 a nice place to revisit. The auspicious season opener, "Dinner at Seven Thirty," is a typically disarming and disorienting quirk fest that recasts the characters in a parallel New York universe. Dr. Joel Fleischman (Rob Morrow) is married to a high society (and high maintenance) Shelly (Cynthia Geary), Maggie (Janine Turner) is their au pair, Ed (Darrin E.Burrows) is an Armani clad corporate raider, Holling (John Cullum) is a Piano Man, Ruth-Anne (Peg Phillips) is the leader of an internal medicine group, Chris (John Corbett) is an inarticulate fashion photographer, and Maurice (Barry Corbin) is the luxury-highrise doorman. "I'd rather practice medicine in some hick rural outback than stay here another minute," Joel rebels, returning things to what passes for normal in Cicely. Another early gem is "The Robe," with guest star Charles Martin Smith (American Graffiti) as no less than the Devil who tries to corrupt Shelly. But then the series goes off the beaten path. Joel, following a bumpy courtship with Maggie, goes "Up River" to live in a remote fishing village (His final episode is the bittersweet, "The Quest," in which he departs for good for his "jeweled city"). Enter new doctor Phillip Capra (Paul Provenza) and his journalist wife, Michelle (Teri Polo), brie-eating yuppies from Los Angeles. Northern Exposure remained a fish-out-of-water comedy, but these two characters are as bland as tilapia. Though not nearly the hard cases that a resistant Joel was, they, too, succumb to Cicely's charms, and by series' end, Michelle is having hallucinatory forest chats with Joel's former New York rabbi. Happily, the rest of the characters are still good company. Between Ruth-Anne and trapper Walt (Moultrie Patten) and Maurice (Corbin) and Officer Barbara Semanski (Diane Delano), love really blossoms this season. But as Iris Dem Inkl. fragt: Ukendt |

Jamaica Inn [1939]Se flere produkter fra AmazonIt's generally acknowledged that the Master of Suspense disliked costume dramas and Jamaica Inn--a rip-roaring melodrama drawn from a Daphne du Maurier pot-boiler, set in 1820s Cornwall--is about as costumed as they come. So what was he doing directing it? Killing time, essentially. In 1939 Hitchcock was due to leave Britain for Hollywood, but delays Stateside left him with time on his hands. Never one to sit idle, he agreed to make one picture for Mayflower Productions, a new outfit formed by actor Charles Laughton and émigré German producer Erich Pommer. An innocent young orphan (the 19-year-old Maureen O'Hara in her first starring role) arrives at her uncle's remote Cornish inn to find it a den of reprobates given to smuggling, wrecking and gross overacting. They're all out-hammed, though, by Laughton at his most corseted and outrageously self-indulgent as the local squire to whom Maureen runs for help. Since his star was also the co-producer, Hitch couldn't do much with the temperamental actor. He contented himself with adding a few characteristic touches--including a spot of bondage (always a Hitchcock favourite), and the chief villain's final spectacular plunge from a high place--and slyly sending up the melodramatic absurdities of the plot. Jamaica Inn hardly stands high in the Master's canon, but it trundles along divertingly enough. Hitchcock fanatics will have fun comparing it with his two subsequent--and far more accomplished--Du Maurier adaptations, Rebecca and The Birds. -- Philip Kemp Inkl. fragt: Ukendt |

Last Of The Dogmen [1996]Se flere produkter fra AmazonDespite an irritating, tacked-on voice-over narration that somebody must have thought necessary to make sense of the story (it isn't), Last of the Dogmen is actually a very moving and magical film. Tom Berenger plays a Montana bounty hunter who helps an anthropologist (Barbara Hershey) search for the descendants of a Cheyenne tribe who disappeared in the 1870s. What the two find in a remote mountain stretch is an entire community of Cheyenne who have kept themselves cut off from the modern world. A Dances with Wolves parallel emerges as the white outsiders gradually fit in, but Last of the Dogmen stands up just fine without comparison to any other films. As in Kevin Costner's Oscar-winning movie, however, there are ways in which this film captures a similar sense of yearning, mystery and loss--not least being David Arnold's fine John Barry-esque score. -- Tom Keogh Inkl. fragt: Ukendt |

Deep In The Woods [2000]Se flere produkter fra AmazonDeep in the Woods is an average horror film, unusual only because it was made in France. A troupe of young actors who specialise in school performances are hired by sinister aristocrat Francois Berleand to perform their "Little Red Riding Hood" act at his remote mansion as a birthday treat for his strangely silent grandson. As is often the case, the film works better in the early stages as it piles on the omens and disturbing touches, with unsettling byplay between host and guests, than it does in the extended finale, which features the familiar demises of most of the cast as someone dressed in the Big Bad Wolf costume stalks with a spear-gun and unorthodox use is made of a handy nail gun. The young, attractive victims bicker and get naked just like in a rubbish American movie and leading lady/likely survivor Clotilde Courau (best known as the young Anne Parillaud in Map of the Human Heart) is wasted in a nothing role, but mad people Berleand and Lavant provide some entertainment value.-- Kim Newman Inkl. fragt: Ukendt |

DOA - Dead Or Alive/DoomSe flere produkter fra AmazonBased on the popular video-game series, Corey (The Transporter) Yuen's DOA: Dead Or Alive brings together cheesecake titillation and martial-arts action in a lightweight slice of exploitation that's sure to keep its largely young and male audience happy. Jaime Pressly ( My Name is Earl) is top-billed as a pro wrestler who joins a no-holds-barred brawling competition on a remote island; once there, she discovers that the tournament's sponsor, Donovan (Eric Roberts at his toothiest and oiliest), has nefarious plans up his sleeve, and the competitors (which include Devon Aoki, Holly Valance, and the always impressive Kane Kosugi) must bond together to fight a common enemy. As with 2007's The Condemned, DOA: Dead Or Alive is the 21st century equivalent of an early '70s drive-in movie: Proudly loud and lunkheaded, its main function is to cram as much fighting and bikini-clad women into its running time as possible, and to that end, it's enormously successful. Director Yuen understands this, and wisely skews the tone towards the broadly (ahem) tongue-in-cheek; Pressly (whose knack for comedy doesn't get as much mileage here) and the rest of her castmates look good and move well, and the fighting, while not on par with Hong Kong or Thai standards, is plentiful and flashy. If you come expecting this and nothing else, you'll have a fine time with DOA: Dead Or Alive. -- Paul Gaita Inkl. fragt: Ukendt |

The Strangers [Blu-ray] [2008]Se flere produkter fra AmazonA lean, briskly paced and exceptionally creepy thriller, The Strangers earns its scares the old-fashioned way: through atmosphere, sound design, and a simple yet undeniably upsetting central premise that allows for maximum tension throughout its running time. Attractive young lovers Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman are already having a bad day--she's turned down his marriage proposal--before a knock on the door in the middle of the night announces a full-fledged siege on their remote vacation home by a trio of masked assailants. The film's first third delivers the most consistent shivers as the visitors make their presence and intentions known to Tyler; the second half grows more frantic and bloody before a gruesome finale that may leave viewers either rattled to their core or bothered by its empty nihilism. Speedman is fine as the downtrodden male lead (who's seen tucking into a carton of ice cream after being rejected), but it's Tyler who impresses the most by shouldering the lion's share of the terror. First-time writer/director Bryan Bertino impresses by forsaking the current passion for over-the-top violence (save for the finale) in favour of more traditional means of generating fear, and if his project borrows heavily from other films, most notably the French chiller Them (which shares its "inspired by a true story" origin) and Michael Haneke's Funny Games, at least he's taking from the best. The sound design is among the many technical standouts, and the unsettling score by tomandandy ( The Hills Have Eyes) pleasantly evokes Ennio Morricone's fuzztone-heavy work for Dario Argento in the early '70s. On a completely unrelated note, LP fanatics should appreciate how both the film's heroes and villains share an affinity for folk and country music on vinyl. -- Paul Gaita Inkl. fragt: Ukendt |

House - Season 4 - Complete [2007]Se flere produkter fra AmazonHow do you keep a medical show, entering its fourth series, fresh for another round of episodes? If you?re House, it?s easy: get rid of the main team, and have a new bunch come along and audition to be doctors. It?s a very House thing to do, and it makes the first half of season four an absolute blast. Much of the reason for that of course is Hugh Laurie, in the title role. As House, he manages to turn himself into the medical Simon Cowell, chucking out outrageously sarcastic asides, while also giving space to the intriguing collection of supporting players. It?s a stunning performance. On top of that is the usual assortment of medical mysteries, including a brilliantly constructed remote diagnosis of a patient stuck in the South Pole. Even when the audition phase is over, House has plenty to offer, not least a terrific concluding two-parter that continually pulls the proverbial rug. And the ingenuity of the scriptwriters shouldn?t go without praise, continually delivering a series of brilliant medical whodunits for Laurie and his team to solve. If there?s a problem with House season four, it?s that it tries to cram too many characters in there, but it?s not a serious concern. For it?s a show that knuckles down and gets on with things quickly, continually managing to surprise and entertain. You may never want to be treated by Dr House, but it?s enormous fun watching him treat others? -- Simon Brew Inkl. fragt: Ukendt |

Jurassic Park / The Lost World (1993/97)Se flere produkter fra AmazonOn remote Isla Nuba entrepreneur John Hammond (Richard Attenborough) has built the ultimate theme-park, populated by genetically engineered dinosaurs painstakingly reconstructed from DNA extracted from prehistoric amber... and, of course, frogs! Adapted from Michael Crichton's novels, Steven Spielberg's Jurassic Park blockbusters became a cultural and commercial phenomenon thanks in part to the enduring appeal of all things prehistoric. But the films' extraordinarily realistic digital dinosaurs also showcased the spectacular computer-generated effects that have since become ubiquitous in Hollywood filmmaking. Indeed, in the years since 1993 it is debatable whether any films have revolutionised special effects to such an extent, and this DVD box set offers the perfect opportunity to relive both movies' visual and aural splendour (the original film was also the first to be released with a DTS soundtrack). Given their rather insipid human prey (including Dickie Attenborough and Jeff Goldblum) there is little doubt that the dinosaurs are the real stars, from the benign majesty of the towering brachiosaurus to the reptilian menace of the velociraptors. Most memorable of all is the T-rex, displaying a spine-chilling combination of physical ferocity and child-like bewilderment in the face of its reincarnation in the modern world. While Jurassic Park still retains a unique power and a seminal place in film history, Spielberg's The Lost World sequel exceeds its predecessor in almost every respect: the digital dinos are more populous, faster and meaner, the set-pieces have more bravura, and the special effects raise the benchmark even higher in blending CGI and live action spectacle. Overall, the first film's sense of awe and almost stately contemplation of its own visual splendour are replaced with a more visceral style and darker tone, as the raptors and rexes attack with a predatory ferociousness more reminiscent of Aliens than Godzilla. Crocodile Dundee In Los Angeles [2001]Se flere produkter fra AmazonMade 13 years after the previous sequel, 2001's Crocodile Dundee in Los Angeles sees Paul Hogan's likeable, heroic and unworldly Aussie hero accompany his partner Sue (Linda Kozlowski, Hogan's real-life wife) to Los Angeles. There he finds himself wrestling with the niceties of the Californian lifestyle somewhat less easily than he wrestles with crocs back in the outback. Sue, meanwhile, uncovers a smuggling plot involving artworks from Yugoslavia. Dundee duly steps forward to go undercover and--with a bit of muscle and survivalist nous--saves the day. As anyone who saw Escape from LA will testify, the moral here is: never make a sequel in Los Angeles. The kindest thing that can be said about this outing is that it is harmless. It exudes a family-friendly geniality throughout that almost makes its many flaws endurable--almost but not quite. Hogan--61 when he made this--makes for an embarrassingly implausible action hero, lacquered in trowel-loads of make-up to fill in the facial creases. The antipodean-abroad jokes are insultingly feeble; Dundee strolls into a gay bar by mistake, thinks the parking valet is a mugger, can't operate the remote control, etc. There's a cameo involving Mike Tyson that belongs nowhere and Kozlowski's performance only fuels suspicion that this is a husband and wife vanity project. If nothing else, Crocodile Dundee in Los Angeles is proof that Hollywood's alleged stony-heartedness is a myth, for it can only have been out of charity and benevolence to an elderly Australian thespian down on his luck that this movie was given the green light. On the DVD: Crocodile Dundee in Los Angeles is presented in anamorphic widescreen format with excellent image quality, bringing out the rich contrasts between the early outback scenes and the early establishing shots of sunlit LA. Sound quality is impeccable also. The only extras, however, are the trailer and some "behind the scenes" clips so perfunctory and unrevealing they might as well not have bothered. -- David Stubbs Inkl. fragt: Ukendt |

The Shadow [1994]Se flere produkter fra AmazonAnother masked avenger is reincarnated as a big budget movie. Idle playboy Lamont Cranston (Alec Baldwin), schooled in Tibetan mysticism, fights crime in late '30s New York while wearing a natty hat and false beak. He finds time to romance telepathic sweetie Margo Lane (Penelope Miller), whose crusty old scientist Dad (Ian McKellen) has just invented an atom bomb which is in danger of falling into the hands of Shiwan Khan (John Lone), conquest-happy last descendent of Genghis Khan. Director Russell Mulcahy turns out the regulation death traps (a locked chamber filling with water, a bomb timer which ticks away during the climax) and the Shadow breezes through via nifty "invisible" effects. It evokes the conventions and charms of 1930s' pulp fiction in rather more nostalgic mode than Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction, and adds little of its own attitude, although a sly camp sensibility (notably in the extremely chi-chi Tim Curry and John Lone as the villains) goes for snickering at the expense of tension. A pleasant, eye-pleasing movie but, after the super-heroic likes of Batman, The Crow and The Mask, the merely mysterious Shadow seems somewhat grandfatherly and remote. -- Kim Newman Inkl. fragt: Ukendt |
