Lead Balloon - Series 2Se flere produkter fra AmazonWhoever argued that the sitcom is dead hadn’t been talking to Jack Dee. Starring Dee as stand-up comedian Rick Spleen, Lead Balloon is one of the funniest shows of its ilk to come along in some time, and this second series finds it on top form. Series two of Lead Balloon finds Spleen continuing to delude himself into thinking his popularity is soaring, when in fact his star is still ticking along much lower down the fame ladder, and showing little sign of improving. Faced with his own paranoia, a collection of friends whose use varies, and the antics of his family, Spleen’s life is rarely dull. Plus the moment where he meets the children’s entertainer is surely one of the funniest things seen on television in recent times. Clearly crafted around the characteristics of its star performer, Lead Balloon is a strong lesson in how to put a good situation comedy together. The writing is excellent, buffed and polished to a very high standard. And then the case of performers really do make the most of what they’re given. The result is a superb collection of eight episodes, that leave you genuinely thirsting for the third series of the show. Has Jack Dee, then, single-handedly dragged the sitcom back to life? Maybe, maybe not. But he has made an excellent one himself… -- Jon Foster Inkl. fragt: Ukendt |

Wild Orchid [1990]Se flere produkter fra AmazonSoft-porn impresario Zalman King's Wild Orchid is supposed to be an "erotic drama", but it fails because there isn't the faintest semblance of chemistry between the three main players. "From the creators of 9 ½ Weeks comes the most eagerly awaited film of the year", trumpets the voice-over on the trailer, but therein lies the problem: in 9 ½ Weeks Mickey Rourke smouldered with Kim Basinger. In Wild Orchid, things have wilted before he even gets on screen. There is a vague semblance of plot: young, naïve, beautiful multilingual lawyer Emily (Carré Otis) is hired to help the obnoxious Claudia (Jacqueline Bisset), a big-time developer, to close a major property deal in Rio. Wheeler (Mickey Rourke) is the poor kid made good who proves the fly in the ointment. Bisset is supposed to have developed an obsession with the emotionally constipated Rourke after he rejected her. And Otis is supposed to be the one who eventually gets under his skin. But child-model turned actress Otis seems to be having trouble getting her swollen lips round a whole sentence at a time, let alone acting. The film dates from 1990 yet seems firmly stuck in the 1980s, from the obsession with all things commercial to the ludicrous fashion-sense (Rourke: big jacket, no shirt, lots of gold jewellery; Otis: virginal flowing dresses and tresses to match). And the sex scene, when it finally arrives in the dying moments, is brief and entirely unerotic. Brazil looks good though. On the DVD: Wild Orchid on disc has acceptable sound and picture, but the lack of any extra features is not impressive. When you get bored you can always amuse yourself by selecting from the substantial list of subtitles. -- Harriet Smith Inkl. fragt: Ukendt |

Sacred Planet [2004]Se flere produkter fra AmazonThis 40-minute world travelogue made for IMAX theatres focuses on the few remaining people who still live close to the land. Narrator Robert Redford mentions we should listen to these folks since, as the movie seems to insist, they have some inner peace the rest of civilization does not (represented by sped-up clips of urban life à la Koyaanisqatsi). Certainly their worlds look lavish: the deserts America, the rain forests of Borneo, the rocky shorelines of Alaska, the plains of Africa. As IMAX documentaries go, this is one of the thinnest, and since you lose the impressive vistas from the gigantic IMAX screen (unless you have a monitor the size of a house), it works better as a diversion. Other films have stated this message more effectively and entertainingly. --Doug Thomas Inkl. fragt: Ukendt |

Barefoot In The Park [1967]Se flere produkter fra AmazonBased on Neil Simon's own play, 1967's Barefoot in the Park is a perennially joyous film starring carefree Jane Fonda and staid lawyer Robert Redford as young newlyweds setting up home in Greenwich Village. Although the opening credits are fragrantly idyllic (aided by Neal Hefti's soundtrack, you can almost smell the blossom in Central Park), the film doesn't idealise apartment living in New York, à la Friends, far from it: Fonda and Redford's apartment is up several flights of stairs; there's a hole in the skylight and the bedroom is the size of a cupboard. All of this puts some strain on the marriage. When Fonda introduces fellow free spirit and ageing, behind-on-the-rent Lothario (Charles Boyer) to her somewhat inhibited mother (Mildred Natwick), the hapless Redford in particular is forced to come to terms with his own inhibitions. Although the second half of the film moves at a less cracking pace than the first, Barefoot in the Park is as exhilarating as a romantic weekend city break. Directo r Gene Saks, scriptwriter Neil Simon and composer Hefti would regroup in 1968 to make the similarly wonderful The Odd Couple. On the DVD: With the aid of filtering, the DVD recaptures the almost unreal colour quality common to films of this period, while the sound is faithful to the nuances of Hefti's soundtrack. The special features are miserly--subtitles, a choice of languages and the original trailer, though this at least conveys the engaging naiveté of the period--("The rarest, unsquarest, happiest motion picture in many a year!"). -- David Stubbs Inkl. fragt: Ukendt |

La Dolce Vita [1960]Se flere produkter fra AmazonAt three brief hours, Fellini's cynical, engrossing social commentary, La Dolce Vita, stands as his timeless masterpiece. A rich, detailed panorama of Rome's modern decadence and sophisticated immorality, the film is episodic in structure but held tightly in focus by the wandering protagonist through whom we witness the sordid action. Marcello Rubini is a tabloid reporter trapped in a shallow high-society existence, as extraordinarily played by Marcello Mastroianni, a man of paradoxical, emotional juxtapositions: cool but tortured, sexy but impotent. He dreams about writing something important but remains seduced by the money and prestige that accompany his shallow position. He romanticises about finding true love but acts unfazed upon finding that his girlfriend has taken an overdose of sleeping pills. Instead, he engages in a ménage à trois, then frolics in a fountain with a giggling American starlet (bombshell Anita Ekberg), and in the film's unforgettably inspired finale, attends a wild orgy that ends, symbolically with its participants finding a rotting sea animal while wandering the beach at dawn. Fellini saw his film as life affirming (thus its title, "The Sweet Life"), but it's impossible to take him seriously. While Mastroianni drifts from one worldly pleasure to another, be it sex, drink, glamorous parties or rich foods, they are presented, through his detached eyes, as merely momentary distractions. His existence, an endless series of wild evenings and lonely mornings, is ultimately soulless and facile. Because he lacks the courage to change, Mastroianni is left with no alternative but to wearily accept and enjoy this "sweet" life.

Pedro Almodovar Collection: Bad Education / Tie Me Up, Tie Me Down / Live Flesh / All About My Mother / Talk To Her [2004]Se flere produkter fra AmazonWriter/director Pedro Almodóvar's dark, sexy Hitchcock homage is his best work since his Oscar-winning All About My Mother, and deepened by a sun-dappled sadness. Handsome, enigmatic Ã?ngel (Gael GarcÃa Bernal) arrives at the Spanish movie offices of director Enrique Goded (Fele Martinez) and happily proclaims that he's actually Enrique's long-lost school chum Ignacio--an announcement that is both less than convincing and more than it seems. A novice actor, Ã?ngel pitches a semi-autobiographical screenplay in which he's determined to star, a revenge-laden reflection of the doomed love he and Enrique shared as boys before a paedophile priest cruelly intervened. The script, and the lost days it recalls, carefully unfurls into a series of brooding movies-within-movies and memories-inside-memories, which allow the sensual, multiple-role-playing Bernal to give the performance of his young career--among other things, he makes a stunningly convincing drag queen--and Almodóvar the opportunity to suggest, movingly, that people will pay any price to ensure that their stories are told. -- Steve Wiecking Inkl. fragt: Ukendt |

The Sopranos - Complete HBO Season 1-6 - Deluxe Edition [1999]Se flere produkter fra AmazonA flat-out treasure trove of television, The Sopranos Complete HBO Seasons 1-6 box set brings together every episode of a genuinely extraordinary series. Those that call it quite possibly the best show America has produced in the last decade aren’t far wide of the mark (although fans of The Wire could have an argument there). To think The Sopranos all started from a simple sell: that a New Jersey mob boss falls into depression, and seeks out counseling to help him cope. And while early episodes followed Tony Soprano’s balancing act as he sought to keep this from his mobster friends, The Sopranos took this foundation and built upon it a collection of layered, intriguing characters from both Tony’s ‘work’ and ‘home’ families. That’s only part of the reason for The Sopranos’ extraordinary success, though. Because the writers then seeded many delightfully intricate plot lines, that seemed to seamlessly weave between one another. The end result was that every character was important, and--crucially--there was a real sense of unease, as fans began to realise that The Sopranos could have a quiet run of episodes, and then suddenly take out a character you’ve spent hours engaged with. It’s a fascinating cocktail. Ruthless yet emotional, violent yet intimate, brash yet insecure, the characters of The Sopranos are as three dimensional as television drama gets. It’s a tragedy it’s finished, but the six series in this box offer a stunning legacy, and a masterclass to anyone else on the planet looking to make a character-driven drama. -- Simon Brew Inkl. fragt: Ukendt |

Close Encounters of the Third Kind--Collector's Edition (two discs) [1978]Se flere produkter fra AmazonReleased in 1977, Close Encounters of the Third Kind was that year's cerebral alternative to Star Wars. It's arguably the archetypal Spielberg film, featuring a fantasy-meets-reality storyline (to be developed further in E.T.), a misunderstood Everyman character (Richard Dreyfuss), apparently hostile government agents (long before The X-Files), a sense of childlike awe in the face of the otherworldly, and a sweeping feel for epic film-making learned from the classic school of David Lean. Contributing to the film's overall success are the Oscar-winning cinematography from Vilmos Zsigmond, Douglas Trumbull's lavish effects and an extraordinary score from John Williams that develops from eerie atonality à la Ligeti to the gorgeous sentiment of "When You Wish Upon a Star" over the end credits. Not content with the final result, Spielberg tinkered with the editing and inserted some new scenes to make a "Special Edition" in 1980 which ran three minutes shorter than the original, then made further revisions to create a slightly longer "Collector's Edition" in 1998. This later version deletes the mothership interior scenes that were inserted in the "Special Edition" and restores the original ending. On the DVD: CE3K is packaged here with confusing documentation that fails to make clear any differences between earlier versions of the film and this "Collector's Edition"--worse, the back cover blurb misleadingly implies that this disc is the 1980 "Special Edition" edit. It is not. A gorgeous anamorphic widescreen print of Spielberg's 1998 "Collector's Edition" edit occupies the first disc: this is the version with the original theatrical ending restored but new scenes from the "Special Edition" retained. The second disc rounds up sundry deleted scenes that were either dropped from the original version or never made it into the film at all--fans of the "Special Edition" can find the mothership interior sequence here. The excellent "making-of" documentary dates from 1997 and has interviews with almost everyone i Inkl. fragt: Ukendt |

Later With Jools Holland - Hootenanny [1992]Se flere produkter fra AmazonJools Holland's long-established Hogmanay/New Year's Eve celebration Later Â… Hootenanny remains TV's definitive dad-rock haven after 11 years on air. This formidably well-stuffed collection is a best of the best: the easiest way to check out the guest list is to study the cover picture--there really are that many names. Amusingly, the compilation comes close to shooting itself in the foot by opening with Solomon Burke's rip-roaring "Everybody Needs Somebody to Love", thus giving the following 31 turns a near-impossible act to follow. If in doubt, watch it at the end, as the everybody-up-on-stage version of Jeff Beck's "Hi Ho Silver Lining" that closes the disc is unfortunately a shambles. Along the way, though, there are plenty of highlights, the best of which add up to a triumph for the Welsh contingent. Cerys Matthews and Tom Jones do their best smoochy version of "Baby It's Cold Outside" before it began to wear a bit thin, the strapping Matthews managing to come on like a cross between Bambi and that girl you fancied in the lower sixth. Immediately preceding this is a gloriously menacing performance from John Cale in which he turns Johnny Mercer's jazz classic "I Wanna Be Around" into a leering, spitting threat to the listener's personal safety. There's something for everyone here, though, so just enjoy the show. On the DVD: Later Â… Hootenanny on disc has nothing much by way of extras other than a handy facility that allows you to programme a sequence of any six tracks of your choosing, which is quite clever. But with over 30 acts performing more than two hours of music on a single disc, you really don't need anything more. --Roger Thomas Inkl. fragt: Ukendt |

The Police - Everybody Stares: The Police Inside Out [2005]Se flere produkter fra Amazon"We're done," says Stewart Copeland near the end of Everyone Stares: The Police Inside Out, his homemade documentary about the rise and eventual fall of the group that ruled the planet during their '70s-'80s heyday. "When you get to where you're going, the ride is over." Yeah, but what a ride it was. Some 20 years after the Police (Copeland, Sting, and Andy Summers) disbanded for good, the drummer, now a film composer, edited the 50-plus hours of Super 8 footage he shot way back when, compiled a new soundtrack, wrote some voice-over commentary, and put together a film that, while considerably less than perfect, provides genuine insight into the chaotic, ultimately deadening world of rock superstardom. It all starts in '76, when the original band formed in England; by 1978, Copeland narrates, "we were ready to shed the leprous scab of (our) wretched historyÂ… and sally forth to the promised land of America." Fame and fortune ensued, and along the way, Copeland filmed everything--not just the inevitable scenes inside their tour van and backstage, but pre-gig sound checks, recording sessions, in-store promo appearances Â… Hell, he even recorded the band while they were making their videos, and there's one remarkable sequence in which he sets up his camera on a tripod behind his drum kit, then turns to address the viewer in mid-performance ("There's a little fight going on in front of the stage," he tells us). The camera work is often pretty shaky, and the performance footage is primitive, not to mention loud and distorted, but somehow that fits Copeland's fly-on-the-wall approach; and the soundtrack, live and studio versions of familiar tunes that Copeland "lobotomized" and "de-arranged," is revelatory. Perhaps best of all, the film offers Copeland a chance to tell us how it all went wrong. By the time of Ghost in the Machine, Sting (who comes off as his usual standoffish, mostly-humourless self) was no longer collaborating with other musicians in the studio. What's more, "(the) adulation started to feel like Inkl. fragt: Ukendt |
