However, creator Donald P Bellisario had spent more than a little time in fully conceptualising this series. Although the format allowed for stories-of-the-week, a B-plot always ran as background motivation for the individual tales. This was a trick Bellisario would also use to good effect later in Magnum P.I. and Quantum Leap. The hook that sustains the audience here is an extremely bitter sub-plot: Stringfellow Hawke (Jan-Michael Vincent) is a peculiar anti-hero to root for since he is effectively being held to ransom and doing the same in return. His brother St. John is held captive somewhere and until his release the Airwolf chopper is Hawke's to keep hidden and use under the covert instructions of "Archangel". His best friend Dominic Santini (the ever-appealing Ernest Borgnine) is a surrogate father figure caught up in the family history. All this pre-determined angst means this is never a show that plays itself for laughs. Very specific character flaws are upfront from the beginning. We are hammered over the head with the idea of Hawke being a tortured intellectual; hence the cello, log cabin retreat and inability to smile. Of course the real star is the spurious technology showcased in the Mach One helicopter armed to the teeth and able to defy the laws of physics on a regular basis. As the mid-80s looked increasingly to the lighter side in most television successes, Airwolf is a rare display of aggression. Justice is fought, but dig only a little way and the moral motivations are often in question. In the opening scene a timid Yeshiva student is chased off a New York subway train, racially abused and savagely beaten up by a ranting skinhead, and from then on in the level of hatred and violence rarely abates. But the passion that fuels the film is as much psychological as physical. The skinhead Danny Balint is the film's protagonist, and his anti-Semitic venom has an unusual cause: he's Jewish himself. Bean, whose previous work as a scriptwriter ( Mulholland Falls and the like) has been accomplished but not exceptional, tackles this fraught subject with a strong sense of personal commitment. He doesn't go for easy targets, either. Like Edward Norton's character in American History X, Danny is no mindless thug: he's intelligent and frighteningly articulate, and he can argue his case with mouth and brains no less than with fists and boots. The film traces his attitude back to his schooldays, when he revolted against the unquestioning submission to Orthodox doctrine that his teachers tried to instil. Faced with a group of Holocaust survivors he denounces them for their passivity in the face of oppression. "Kill your enemies!" he tells them scornfully. There's a lot of talk in this film, and several of the characters are little more than mouthpieces for their respective views. (If Bernard Shaw had ever written a play about anti-Semitism, it might have come out rather like this.) But the play of ideas is passionate and deeply felt, and as the tormented Danny, constantly drawn back to the faith he despises, Ryan Gosling gives a riveting performance. However, it certainly provides an adequate summary of a much-told tale and makes for a good potted introduction to Ali, his sensational conquest of Sonny Liston, his conversion to the Nation of Islam, his exile from boxing following his anti-war stance and return to perform his own "personal age of miracles". The fight footage here is mostly recycled from Bill Cayton and Jim Jacobs' vast stock of film as opposed to telecasts. Here again, then, are the grainy, quicksilver images of the skinny young Ali bamboozling ponderous journeymen Tunney Hunsaker in his debut fight; of the never adequately explained "phantom punch" against Liston in their second fight; of the dancing demolition job he performed on Cleveland Williams in 1967, perhaps the three most awesome, albeit one-sided rounds of heavyweight boxing ever. There are occasional excerpts of Ali running his mouth outside the ring, but these are too few and too familiar. Ian Darke of Sky TV provides a professionally glossy narration that's just about the right side of glib, but the budget doesn't really extend to much beyond cut and pasted footage (with only stills shots of his knockout of George Foreman) spliced with interviews with the likes of Henry Cooper, Ali's old Doctor Angelo and trainer Angelo Dundee who explains, for perhaps the hundredth time to camera, that he thought "Muslim" was a piece of cloth. The essence of Ali's story is certainly encapsulated here, though those looking for more offbeat or in-depth material are advised to check out Champions Forever, When We Were Kings or AKA Cassius Clay. Directed by Danny Boyle and scripted by novelist Alex Garland, this is a terrific SF/horror hybrid, evoking American and Italian zombie movies but also the very British end-of-the-world tradition of John Wyndham ( Day of the Triffids) and Survivors. Shot on digital video, which gives the devastated cityscapes a closed-circuit-camera realism, this grips from the first, with its understandably extreme performances, its terrifyingly swift monster attacks and its underlying melancholy. Seth Davis (Giovanni Ribisi) is a 19-year-old college dropout who strives for approval from his father (Ron Rifkin), a judge who is horrified that his son operates a 24-hour illicit casino. When an old friend visits the casino with a fellow broker, Davis is impressed by their wads of money and yellow Ferrari, and decides to join the firm. In no time he's making sales and settling into the groove of the office and all the after-hours perks, but the dream fades when Davis discovers the scam that is making all of the brokers wealthy beyond their dreams. Borrowing heavily from Wall Street and Glengarry Glen Ross, Boiler Room is at its best when dealing with matters of money, and powerful scenes of Davis learning to be a "closer" showcase the significant talent of Ribisi, Nicky Katt, and Vin Diesel. The movie flounders when developing the relationship between Davis and his father, becoming sentimental and trite. Forever Delayed visually highlights this dichotomy, as well as exposing their contradictory stance towards capitalism. Dependent on the free market to disseminate their material to the masses but at the same time deeply aware of the inequalities it causes, the group has continuously tried to achieve a balance between the political and popular. The videos express these paradoxes, with production usually falling into one of two categories: the in-yer-face political promos ("Little Baby Nothing", "So Why So Dad?"), and the everyday ("Found That Soul", "Ocean Spray"). Sadly, despite their riotous intentions, the videos made up of live concert material ("Life Becoming a Landslide", "The Masses Against the Classes") sit in the latter category, primarily because of their predictability. Matching the style and typeface of their release artwork, one of the group's long-standing favourite video techniques for their more politically inclined releases has been the incorporation of critical slogans and quotes. From "You Love Us" to 1999's "Tsunami", sublime and usually incomprehensible messages are flashed on the screen. Whether these are radical anti-capitalist messages or pretentious stylistic techniques to sell more records is unclear. It seems the jury remains out on the real motivations behind both these videos and the band itself. On the DVD: Forever Delayed features all 30 of the band's videos, from "Motown Junk" (1990) to "There by the Grace of God" (2002), plus 14 bonus remixes, a discography and photo gallery. All of the audio material is presented in either Dolby stereo or the more wholesome 5.1 surround format. Under the silky but chilling command of a math professor (Kevin Spacey), Jim and the others master card counting --the statistical analysis of cards dealt in blackjack games. The team lives a humdrum existence during the week, but on weekends in Sin City the students are rolling in cash, frequenting exclusive clubs and feeling on top of the world. Ben even gets the girl: a comely fellow card counter played by Kate Bosworth. Despite all the success, Ben feels ethically compromised and indeed director Robert Luketic ( Legally Blonde, Across the Universe), in the old tradition of American movies, plays it both ways where fun vices are concerned. On the one hand, it feels so good --on the other, ahem, we know it's wrong. That studied ambivalence proves wearing after a while, making the most interesting character in the film a casino watchdog played by Laurence Fishburne. A master at reading the emotions of gamblers beating the house with a scam, he's admirable for being good at his job, but repellent for wrecking the faces of counters in casino dungeons. Bod is small and bald, with a yellow dress and a Buddha-like imperturbability. In each episode, the five gather one by one, each arriving to their own characteristic perky jazz-folky theme, in their own characteristic gait (indeed, like a zen riddle, the walk itself is far more important than where they're walking to, or why). Some viewers consider the cartoon's mysterious pastoral stillness alarming, as if something terrible were going on that we're never told about or shown--"Waiting for Bodot", as it were--but most found its calmness both beguiling and addictive. As in the original Watch with Mother format, Bod is paired with Alberto Frog and his Amazing Animal Band (in which an all-animal orchestra plays the classics, then guesses what flavour milkshake their frog conductor will reward himself with). Who knows how tots so exposed to the over-active kids-fare of today will respond, but the grown-ups in their charge will find The Complete Bod soothing, seductive and bizarre. -- Honey Glass On the DVD: the DVD contains all 13 episodes of Bod.
