There's no shortage of anger on Exit Wounds. Even when the backdrop suggests a lazy dance-out, the war of the words comes screeching forth. Outsiderz 4 Life lay down a placid rhythm track and then expletives fly. Lady Luck featuring Redman quote the Beastie Boys' "Hey Ladies" and turn it on its head with a 150-mile-per-hour rap. The album's real star, however, is obviously Yonkers-bred DMX, who leads off the album with an attack on Bill Withers's "Ain't No Sunshine" with expected ferocity and is featured with Big Stan on the Casio-keyboard-stuttering drive of "Walk with Me." Previous DMX collaborators, the Lox, shade things ominously for the noir-ish "Bust Your Gun." Queensbridge housing project's finest Nas keeps it raw with the appropriately titled "Gangsta Tears." Only Playa, hidden deep in the middle--sandwiched between Mack 10 and the truly beat-spastic Drag On--offer a conciliatory track with the romantically tinged "Incense Burning." It's so out of place, the effect is comical. How did these smoothies sneak past these gangstas, huh? -- Rob O'Connor

For diehard fans of low-budget cult cinema, Jess Franco is among the great directors--his style somewhere between European versions of Roger Corman's Mondo sexploitation and Andy Warhol's hardcore improv. His films Vampyros Lesbos, The Devil Came from Akasava, and Mrs. Hyde, She Kills in Ecstasy--all made in 1970 and starring Franco's doomed Spanish seductress Soledad Miranda--perfected "horrotica," Franco's melange of B-grade horror and twisted erotica. Collecting original music from the films' soundtracks, Vampyros Lesbos: Sexadelic Dance Party pays tribute to Franco, Miranda (who died in a 1971 car crash), and the films they made together. German composers Manfred Hubler and Siegfried Schwab (recording as Vampires' Sound Incorporation) created music sufficiently groovy and go-go to accompany Franco's freaked-out vision. Their crazy sounds are a speed-hopped swinger's bash of blaring trumpet, booming trombone, slinky organ, and spacy sitar, with a beefy foundation of mod guitar, bass, and drums. Eccentrically titled instrumentals like "The Lions and the Cucumber," "Droge CX 9," and "The Six Wisdoms of Aspasia" manage to be psychedelic in the way of both the Doors' haunting rock and the Fifth Dimension's up-up-and-away pop. Music ripe for revival, Sexadelic Dance Party falls somewhere between the glorious lounge orchestrations of Esquivel and the cheap Casio-funk porn music championed by bands like the Beastie Boys. It's just one more nugget mined from the overflowing heaps of past decades' trash culture. --Roni Sarig

They come stinking of gasoline, riddled with acne and dressed in low-slung dungarees. They boast song-titles like "Raggedy Man", "Dirty Job" and "Under Heavy Riffage", They are North London trio Ten Benson and their game is rock, in its purest and simplest form. While Hiss may sometimes come across as facile homage to rock godheads AC/DC and ZZ Top, Ten Benson march proudly in the tradition of glam-revivalists Earl Brutus, for whom irony and the utterly serious pursuit of rock mythology are separated only by the odd quirky deviation from the established rock lexicography--here, forgettable twee Casio organ instrumental "Dr Hemlock". Look instead to the big-balled riffage of "Rock Cottage", which boasts the immortal lyric "High wattage--hot sausage," delivered with all the sweaty-crotched panache of those intent on crafting a classic example of the world's dumbest art form. --Louis Pattison

Envelopes are not a band afraid of wearing their influences on their sleeves. Take "Party", the opening track from Here Comes the Wind, a whirl of caustic guitars and low-slung bass lines that's so Pixies it hurts--at least until vocalist Henrik Orrling throws in a reference to Bonnie Tyler's "Total Eclipse of the Heart" just to confuse you: "Once upon a time I was falling in love, now I'm only falling apart/Totally f**ked from the start". Elsewhere on their second album, Scandinavian rockers Envelopes roll along merrily, swiping from pop culture as they go, and discarding it just as readily. "Heaven" has something of the skinny chug of Talking Heads circa '77, while elsewhere there's a splash of sassy B-52s chat in the vocal interplay between Orrling and female singer Audrey Pic. Nothing's quite that regimented, though, meaning Envelopes are feel to give the record's mid-point over to some whimsical experimentation--"Boat" disappears into a peculiar sonic soup of wobbling echo and walkie talkies, while the following "Put on Hold" is an oddly freeform electro-pop song powered by chunky organs and Casio hand-claps. It's an unfocused sort of fun, but no worse for it. --Louis Pattison

Magnetic Fields The Charm of the Highway Strip

Magnetic Fields The Charm of the Highway Strip

Sweet and sour, incurably romantic, and deeply misanthropic, Magnetic Fields' mastermind Stephin Merritt is a one-of-a-kind voice in modern lo-fi pop. This 1994 outing is a bit of a departure, with Merritt taking his trademark ABBA-styled Casio-pop for a spin in the country--literally. Awash in lush, Nashville-ready production, songs like the doleful "Lonely Highway" (which encompasses snatches of the Lee Hazelwood classic "Jackson") and "Born on a Train" are nothing short of thrilling. But much of this particular stretch of the Fields is lacking in charm, since Merritt's wry stance chafes a bit too hard against the guileless melodies. Completists may feel compelled to take a ride, but novices should probably stick to the more urbane journeys offered by Holiday and Distant Plastic Trees. --David Sprague

Although German dance trio Toktok formed way back in 1993, it wasn't until they met singer Sophia Larsson Ocklind that they felt compelled to start work on their debut, Toktok Vs. Soffy O. It's easy to see why she so moved them. Her quirky mix of emotionless androidism and sugary sunshine make her the perfect voice for Toktok's, body-popping, euro-trash synth-pop. Together, their monotone melodies and cheap analogue sounds might suggest electro-clash experimentation, especially when played out to gorgeously deep house ("The Lookalikes", "Talkative", "One of These Places") and sleazy basement punk ("A Pointless Life"). But at heart Toktok are passionately retro. With Casio keyboard rhythm tracks and equally hi-tech keyboard sounds, and with electro-disco tracks like "Jean" sounding like they're about to break into Dead or Alive's "You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)" or anything by Human League, images of people wearing electric pink eye-shadow and dancing like robots is hard to shift. Yet spectacularly kitsch as Toktok's Depeche-Mode-with-a-smile shtick is, it's scarily addictive, and in a time of super-buffed dance-floor sophistication, their minimalist DIY attitude and angular grooves--as showcased by the sneering "Missy Queen's Gonna Die"--are fantastically refreshing. -- Dan Gennoe
