The 411 Between The SheetsSe flere produkter fra AmazonThe 411's debut album, Between the Sheets, is a sassy, confident, hook-filled entrance, with the added credibility of a host of names behind it. Ghostface Killah materialises "On My Knees" (which he also produces) and they've ridden, to a certain extent, under the wings of Lemar (they met, for the most part, doing his backing vocals). History aside, there's an originality to The 411 that makes them stand out in the same way as The Sugababes do (perhaps the girls' nearest contemporaries on their pop side). However, despite this and some nifty Sixties all-girl influences (particularly lead single "On My Knees" - a catchy, ghostly thing) the girls have a definite hip-hop edge too. It's an interesting mix that, for the most part, works. It's not particularly deep stuff though--"Dumb", for instance, tracks the thought of a potential affair, before concluding that it would be "dumb", with a chorus that stutters the word to little melodic effect. Bad Boy's Da' Band Too Hot for T.V.Se flere produkter fra AmazonA return to roots of sorts, Love & Life finally reunites Mary J Blige with the producer who made her the bona fide R&B star she is today, Sean "Puffy/P Diddy" Combs. Arguably, Combs needs the reunion more than she does--since masterminding Blige's first two albums, What's the 411 and My Life, his production kudos has suffered at the hands of his rapping and image, while she's gone from strength to strength. Keen to make her sixth album an event, Puffy pulls out all the stops, dusting off his taste and imagination, and thumbing his Rolodex for a better class of guest, including Jay-Z, 50 Cent, Eve, Dr Dre and Method Man. But it's the Blige/Combs chemistry that's the main attraction. Blige's lived-in gospel cry demands a superior cut of ghetto fabulous backing track, and Puffy delivers them in spades, from the vintage blaxploitation grooves of "Don't Go", "Press On" and "Ooh!", to the cruising hip-hop soul of "When We" and "It's a Wrap" and the pneumatic clatter of single "Love 1st Sight". On the downside, at 20 tracks, Love & Life is a long album, and with many songs sounding like brilliant ideas half finished, it feels even longer. Auf Der Maur Auf Der MaurSe flere produkter fra Amazon: Prior to the release of this debut solo album, Melissa Auf der Maur made her name playing bass in some of the biggest bands of the 1990s, including Hole and the Smashing Pumpkins, in the process becoming one of indie rock's premier pin-ups. During that time, she built up quite a following and fan base, including several famous friends that help out on Auf der Maur: Chris Goss and Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age), Brandt Bjork (Kyuss), Erik Erlandson (Hole) and James Iha (Smashing Pumpkins). With such high-profile bandmates, it's no wonder that Auf der Maur sounds so big and expansive--musically, it's simply awesome, sounding not completely unlike early PJ Harvey, right down to her cutesy, coquettish singing (she doesn't have a great voice, but she makes the most of it). It's a shame, then, that the lyrics frequently don't cut it. At their best, they're fairly unobtrusive (indeed, first single "Follow the Waves" transcends its lyrics with the magical power of rock). At their worst, they're downright cringeworthy--Auf der Maur's friends should have wrestled the rhyming dictionary from her on tracks such as "Head Unbound" (What rhymes with "unbound"? How about "down" and "ground", and just repeat them over and over?) and "I'll Be Anything You Want". Fabolous Street DreamsSe flere produkter fra AmazonFabolous would have us believe he's serving up Street Dreams, but the Brooklyn rapper's sophomore effort is more likely to rock the party than shake the boulevards. The F.A.B.O.'s smooth, deadpan flow cruises over benignly commercial beats (courtesy of Clue, Just Blaze and Kanye West among others), and the overall effect isn't hard enough to stand up to "official" street-issue hip-hop (think any M.O.P. release). Sure, Fabolous is not without charm. His straightforward delivery of the never-too-deep subject matter enhances slinky, slangy club joints such as the Track Masters-produced "Damn" and the R&B-inflected ballads "Can't Let You Go" and "Trade It All Part 2". The album also features solid guest appearances by Missy Elliott (the electro-funky "Sickalicious"), Mary J Blige (a retooling of her classic "What's the 411" entitled "My Life"), and pop princess Ashanti ("Into You"), but the entire proceedings are stolen by the aforementioned M.O.P., whose verses on "Keepin' It Gangsta" illustrate what street is really all about. -- Rebecca Levine Inkl. fragt: Ukendt |
