It's right there; on the cover, the spine, or illuminating from your iPod screen. But it's hard to corroborate it in your mind. London singer-songwriter Adele's debut album is titled 19, referencing her age, and there are hints it's true--its themes are almost exclusively concerned with young love's highs and (mostly) lows and there's a clipped estuary English tide-mark to her voice, allying her with the fresh-faced modern female songwriting guard; Lily Allen, Kate Nash, et al. But the sheer weight of her maturity--vocally, emotionally and in overall poise?really reduces that all to circumstantial evidence. Adele is carrying something much bigger here, you can't help but be consumed by it on "Daydreamer" with it's jazzy tip-toeing guitar and elastic vocal range and "Hometown Glory" with its deep, lonely piano serving as a bed for the raw emotional undressing that takes place above it. Draw a line between timeless, powerful singers like Ella Fitzgerald and the modern standard of Amy Winehouse; Adele balances and pirouettes confidently along that tightrope. Winehouse particularly informs the likes of "Cold Shoulder" and double-bass heavy "Best for Last", and that's not an alignment that's ever going to be easy to realise credibly. Needless to say, she does, with ease. On future classic "Chasing Pavements" she also gives a nonsensical phrase a handful of heart in lieu of meaning and when you can pull that off convincingly you know you're in possession of something special. Who dares to dream what bigger numbers could bring. --James Berry

Caesars Paper Tigers

Rome wasn't built in a day, but with fourth album, Paper Tigers, beat-rock throwbacks Caesars are now courting belated fame outside of their native Sweden thanks to Apple's iPod TV commercial, which uses the farfisa-thumping "Jerk It Out" - sounding a little like the Inspiral Carpets with a mild reggae fetish. Like fellow countrymen The Hives, Caesars adore the nascent R&B of the ancient Rolling Stones but Paper Tigers betrays all sorts of budget Sixties garage-rock fascinations from The Electric Prunes to ? And The Mysterians and - when a memorably angular riff is called for as on "Throwback" and "It's Not The Fall That Hurts" - the crunching 1-2-3 simplicity of The Kinks. Caesars' ear for melody didn't stop when the Sixties went into meltdown for "My Heart Is Breaking Down" sounds rather like an impertinent homage to The Only Ones' "Another Girl Another Planet". Cheap, corny and deeply unphilosophical for all the right reasons, Paper Tigers is clean, drug-free tuneful Sixties party fun. William Shakespeare was unavailable for comment but surely even he'd agree that Caesars are to be praised, not buried. --Kevin Maidment

Morrissey Live at Earls Court

Morrissey Live at Earls Court

Claiming that "It's either this or prison" but nevertheless capping his most successful solo year thus far, Morrissey performed to 17,183 of his faithful fans at London's Earls Court in December 2004 in a manner (Morrissey's name in big red lightbulbs) intended to invoke Elvis' 1968 comeback special. Thankfully, as Live At Earls Court testifies, Morrissey's life purpose is better served by rock than the jailhouse. Eremitic melancholia, mordant badinage and rancorous avengement. Nobody does it better. In fact, nobody other than Morrissey does it at all. Whether bemoaning surplus hormones on the breathtakingly immodest "I Have Forgiven Jesus" or wishing--rather self-servingly--that he'd been fashionably martyred in the Bavarian snow along with the Busby Babes, Morrissey never fails to raise an eyebrow. He may have spent his formative years with "three incredibly miserable people" but The Smiths' music endures, herein with slight concessions to modernity; Joan Of Arc now owns a melting iPod on "Bigmouth Strikes Again". Many of the titles are taken from the platinum-selling You Are The Quarry. Even the b-sides are grand. "Don't Make Fun Of Daddy's Voice" sounds like The Pixies gone transsexual. Yes, the world is full of crashing bores but please strike Morrissey's name off the list. Again. --Kevin Maidment

Joss Stone Mind, Body & Soul [CD + DVD]

Joss Stone Mind, Body & Soul [CD + DVD]

Se flere produkter fra Amazon
Stone's debut delved back into the deep Southern roots of the 1970s, but now Mind, Body & Soul is dedicated to original material. Joss features as co-writer on nearly all of its songs, with veteran singer Betty Wright still retaining a strong influence as co-producer and vocal coach. Stone's old-style grittiness remains intact, but there are moves to surround her emotive voice with a modernised R&B setting. Stone's highly respected team includes keyboardists Benny Lattimore and Timmy Thomas, and drummers Cindy Blackman and ?uestlove (from The Roots). Joss has also collaborated with Lamont Dozier and Portishead's Beth Gibbons. The opening "Right To Be Wrong" lays down the gauntlet of independence, riddled with pricking guitar fills, surging organ and subtle horn swells. The banal "Jet Lag" and "Understand" are her least inspiring efforts, the latter featuring some of the album's worst lines ("I keep our song on repeat/On my iPod, even when I sleep/And in my dream I'm holding you/Alone on an island, just we two"). Stone's lyrics are trite throughout, but they're merely a vehicle for her intense vocal expression. Several tunes are spoiled by clumping drum programs, but even within this context, Stone's voice rises higher. The album's first single, "You Had Me", could be coming straight from Destiny's Child. The compulsive reggae lope of "Less Is More" would be a wiser choice. "Security" might be an MOR ballad, but even this ascends towards its conclusion--Stone backed up by an incendiary guitar solo. Her voice is always mixed suitably high, and ultimately it's Stone's sheer vocal prowess that makes this album succeed. -- Martin Longley

Asmat Dream Asmat Dream: New Music Indonesia, Vol. 1

Asmat Dream Asmat Dream: New Music Indonesia, Vol. 1

Most people know the music of Indonesia from one of two sources: the myriad of field recordings of gamelan and other locally preserved classical and folk styles, or the Euro-American classical fusions of composers like Lou Harrison. But this series of recordings offers a look at a new, indigenous art music, composed by Indonesian artists and performers to expand their own experience. Harry Roseli's Asmat Dream is a wholly electronic work that, while based on common Sundanese traditions, is a howling mix of tape-looped crickets, vocal samples, and synthesizer programming. In "Diya," Dody Satya Ekagustdiman uses household objects and appliances (sandpaper, a motorcycle helmet) and multiple layers of voices to augment the more common strings, drums, and gongs of gamelan. Nano S. takes the most acoustic path to his discovery, creating a sublime "Galura" (based on Sundanese vocal music) with only two zithers and flute. Each work in this collection takes a new path to an age-old tradition, exposing old myths and creating new ones as they go. --Louis Gibson
