Various Artists Nice Up the Dance: Two Worlds ClashSe flere produkter fra AmazonDancehall ragga-hop rips straight out of the Kingston-Brooklyn crossroads, with Nice Up the Dance making up a big, brash set loaded with 13 hard-edged bouncers. Kenny Dope and Screechy Dan provide a body-blow opener with "Boomin' in Ya Jeep", strutting with a huge, crashing beat and deranged, desperate vocals spouting and drooling over a rumbling bass bottom. Cutty Ranks favours shifty, slipping rhythms, toasting right on top of the beat, dodging and ducking, shunting rapidly between the two parts of his "Who Say Me Done". The entire collection seethes with uncontained energy, lightening up only slightly with Ms. Thing's Tom Tom Club electro-feel on "Get That Money". The hardcore rapping side surfaces on J-Live's "Satisfied" and Pompidou easily qualifies for the most rasping voice, while Singer Blue's "If I Know Jah" has an almost oriental vibe, its tip-toe rhythm nimbly walking on eggshells. Other stand-outs are the hip-hop mix of Tenor Saw's classic "Ring the Alarm", the sheer pulsing drama of Sean Paul's "Infiltrate", the jogging robotics of Chaka Demus & Pliers' "The Boom" and the slab-hop wallop packed by Shaggy's "Gunshot", with Kenny Dope once more riding hard at the desk. Excessive jiggling is, of course, compulsory. -- Martin Longley Inkl. fragt: Ukendt |

Original Soundtrack I Dreamed of Africa OstSe flere produkter fra AmazonKim Basinger's romance in the wild is very much about Nature's beauty. As a composer, Jarre is a natural to capture both a sense of the expansive landscapes and inner beauty of the woman. This album gives us very lengthy cues for a film score (none under six minutes, most over eight) that paint consistently broad musical images. The opening "Arrival In Africa" has the feel of a travelogue aboard a safari jeep, as rolling melodies peak and trough to the undulating scenery. This is punctuated by favourably recorded ethnic percussion ensembles; the effect is like passing swiftly through a village dance. The chirpy motif for Basinger keeps re-appearing after its introduction, but enjoys its most resplendent rendition in the truly joyous and uplifting finale of "Kuki's Determination". Jarre's score in-between suffers only minor interruption: there are two sourced tracks from Ayub Ogada featuring his Afrikaans vocals and light ensemble backing, and "Kel Kweyo" from Geoffrey Oryema, which sustains the geographic atmosphere just as well. The only real surprise is the segue midway through "Death and Misery" into Richard Strauss' "Im Abendrot". Fans of Jarre's percussionist origins will appreciate the furious set-piece outbursts earlier in the cue. --Paul Tonks Inkl. fragt: Ukendt |

Young Buck Straight Outta CashvilleSe flere produkter fra AmazonYoung Buck is out to show the rap world that he's no mere 50 Cent lackey. Yet, Buck and 50 share an equally intense love for firearms and hustle-specific wordplay. 50 utters death threats on the hook of "I'm a Soldier"--right after the gun shot sound effects, of course--and the thuggery just accelerates from there. "Do It Like Me" and "Prices on My Head" reveal Buck's Tupacian persecution complex. Burgeoning beat miners Midi Mafia rework a classical music sample to perfection on "Thou Shall," offering a little something to ease the tension. And when the G Unit comes together, the results are usually breathtaking: "Bonafide Hustler" finds 50 Cent dissing Wyclef Jean while Tony Yayo flips keen verses about peddling drugs, to the tune of "Mama's Gonna Buy You a Mockingbird." Crunk beats from Lil' Jon ("Shorty Wanna Ride") and Three 6 Mafia ("Stomp," "Taking Hits") bring Buck's Tennessee roots to the fore, perfectly matching the rapper's country cadence. Although the boasts about his 'hood exploits can get tiresome, Buck delivers some nasty, first-rate storytelling and jeep beats. --Dalton Higgins Inkl. fragt: Ukendt |

Various Ultimate Country PartySe flere produkter fra AmazonAll that's right with modern country and all that's wrong with modern country in one cellophane wrapper. You can't deny the current roster of talented, enthusiastic, and charismatic performers. On the other hand, the omnipresent rock beats and slick production seem to indicate a lack of trust in the talent. As a result, artists with a less-polished approach--BR5-49, Patty Loveless, Lee Roy Parnell--stand apart from the pack. Choosing material in modern Nashville is also a crapshoot, as evidenced by lines such as: "Going through the Big D, I don't mean Dallas / I can't believe what the judge had to tell us / I got the jeep and she got the palace." Or "Joined a cult, joined the Klan, on the road with Pearl Jam / buried with the Grateful Dead, came back as a Parrothead." Of course, this is a danceable party album, so maybe we should take Trace Adkins's advice: "This ain't no thinkin' thing." --Marc Greilsamer Inkl. fragt: Ukendt |

Warren Vache Jumpin'Se flere produkter fra AmazonThe blending of the three horns of these co-leaders was a masterstroke. The result is a master class in the sophisticated treatment of some neglected standards. Coe is one of the most gifted musical inventors in jazz, Barnes is not far behind and Vach is exactly the kind of player whose game is raised by such company. It all looks too good to be true, but it's not, and the backing by giants in their own right like pianist Brian Lemon, bassist Dave Green, guitarist Dave Cliff and the two drummers Allan Ganley and Clark Tracey extracts the full potential from the session. The choice of material stokes the fires, and it's good to hear such little known wonders as Tadd Dameron's "On A Misty Night--ideal for such company and Benny Golson's "Five Spot After Dark". Alan Barnes plays baritone on a unique version of Coltrane's "Giant Steps", using the convoluted tune at a very slow tempo and making it a thing of beauty rather than a fiendish exercise. Vach has a ball with the more mainstream numbers like "The Jeep Is Jumpin'" and "Don't You Know I Care?". --Steve Voce Inkl. fragt: Ukendt |
