After an agonising hiatus of almost six years, Rush fans could have been forgiven for thinking they'd heard the last of the Canadian power trio. But with Vapor Trails Messrs. Lee, Lifeson and Peart return refreshed and revitalised. Remarkably for a band whose CV stretches back some 30 years, this album displays all the energy and enthusiasm of their younger days combined now with a supremely confident and mature approach to both musicianship and songwriting. Impeccable production values, in which the multi-layered instrumental tracks are presented with bold clarity, are balanced by thoughtful, occasionally introspective and remarkably personal lyrics from Peart. And it rocks, too, really rocks hard. No other three-piece has ever been as powerful as Rush when they let rip, and in places they really open up here. Clocking in at almost 68 minutes, the album shows the benefits of its lengthy gestation with 13 standout tracks and nothing that could be construed as filler. From the barnstorming opener "One Little Victory", through the poignant "Ghost Rider" to the closing "Secret Touch" (Walt Whitman's "Endlessly Rocking" is the appropriate final refrain), Vapor Trails is the confident product of a group who have always worked hard to deserve their "progressive" tag.-- Mark Walker

You can draw parallels, sure. "Re-inventing A Challenge For Machines", with its gentle melody and off-beat guitars, recalls the distrait experimentalism of ex-Don Caballero members, Storm And Stress. "Leaving Capitol City For Good" is like an American version of the slightly mischievous Bristol collective (Flying Saucer Attack, Movietone) or Joe Meek's 1960s visions--albeit a version with its own distinct nationality. That's it, though. From The Vapor Of Gasoline, the second effort from the Mercury Program, is like the fuzzy soundtrack to a French film. Jazz-influenced drum beats, vibraphone and guitar harmonics resonate round structures bewildering in their complexity; songs are soundscapes echoing across genres. The group may hail from Athens, Georgia, but the music sounds like it's from another world altogether. --Everett True

The Clientele God Save the Clientele

God Save the Clientele has better manners than the London quartet's previous release Strange Geometry, with a little less reverb and tighter production. But it's a very similar record. The band continues to mine '60s-era British pop, drawing heavily on the traditions of Fairport Convention and the invasion rush of bands like The Zombies. It's a hard thing to do without sounding twee a la Belle & Sebastian or overtly literate like Pulp. The Clientele's secret is they don't try and reinvent or fetishise their influences, ending up with music that sounds free and forward-thinking. A love letter to London from the vantage point of a wide-eyed boy taking a stroll, the songs here are simple delights, hopping in puddles and gazing at the blue Hyde Park sky. Hints of autumn play around the edges of smiley songs like "Here Comes the Phantom" and "The Dance of the Hours," but the optimism competes with wistful melancholies. "Isn't Life Strange" and "No Dreams Last Night" prick the good vibes with a sense that heartache is never far off. Of course, that only spikes the hopeless romance the band excels at. You could do a lot worse than to waste a day listening to The Clientele and wandering aimlessly, letting the vapor of time slip through your fingers. -- Matthew Cooke

Astonishingly, Rush in Rio is the fifth live album of the Canadian power trio's career, and it's probably their best yet. This three-CD set is the audio companion to the double-DVD release of the same title: both formats commemorate the climactic concert of the Vapor Trails tour, in which Messrs Lee, Lifeson and Peart played to an ecstatic audience of 60,000 at the Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro on November 23, 2002. Kicking off with the crowd-pleasing "Tom Sawyer", Rush reach back into every phase of their catalogue to provide a bravura demonstration of musicianship infused with apparently limitless energy. In a pretty much flawless set of almost three hours' duration there's something to please everyone: classic 70s prog numbers ("The Trees", "2112"), the lighter 80s ("New World Man", "Bravado"), and newer 90s ("Driven", "Leave That Thing Alone"), not forgetting material from Vapor Trails itself. The surprise highlight of the evening follows Neil Peart's storming drum solo "O Baterista": an unplugged rendition of "Resist", with Lee and Lifeson on acoustic guitars. The tracklisting is the same as the DVD, with the addition of two "authorised bootleg" bonus tracks taken from earlier gigs during the same tour: "Between Sun and Moon" (originally from the Counterparts album) and "Vital Signs" (from Moving Pictures). Anyone who hasn't seen the film footage will wonder a little at the dragon noises during "One Little Victory"; nor will they get to see Neil Peart's revolving drum kit or Geddy Lee's washing machines; but with performance and sound mix of this quality, it's likely that Rush fans will not hesitate to acquire both formats. -- Mark Walker
