The subsequent `mix' includes original productions from Hawtin, unreleased cuts from Ricardo Villalobos, Marc Houle and Daniel Bell and classics from Robert Hood and Pan Sonic, and blurs the line between a DJ set and an artistic production. Stripping everything down to bare bones, Hawtin rebuilds the bits and pieces into a 75-minute linear stream of multi-layered drums, rhythmic basslines, whispering hi-hats and inter-spatial `moments'. Stereo Total Total PopSe flere produkter fra AmazonThere is a micro-fine line that separates cult cool and knowingly naff comedy, a fact that Berlin's Stereo Total seem happily oblivious of. Their debut UK release, Total Pop--a bizarre collection of cutesy synth pop and sugar-coated punk lifted from their previous four albums--could easily fall into either category. The confusion stems from their own straight-faced delivery of lines like "You feel like Steve McQueen when you're driving in your car/and you think you're a new James Bond when you're smoking your cigar" (from "Moviestar") over a Hawaiian guitar and painful samba, or the sincerity of the superbly tacky lounge/punk "Holiday In". Come their appalling/works-of-pure-genius covers of Salt'n'Pepa's "Push It" and KC And The Sunshine Band's "Get Down", the urge to climb the walls and sing along seem equally inviting, leading to the belief that this is both the worst holiday camp band and the coolest thing ever committed to disc. Either way, what they lack in lyrical poetry and musical prowess they make up for with bulging bags of charisma, style and entertainment value... and that goes a long, long way. -- Dan Gennoe Fragt: Ukendt! |

Carpenter also gleaned a few hints from Italian prog-rock horror-score kings Goblin, imbuing his simple, synthesizer-based cues with an almost subconscious sense of dread, tension, and impending doom. Chicago Underground Axis and AlignmentSe flere produkter fra AmazonThe Chicago Underground also operates in Orchestra, Trio and Quartet forms, but Axis and Alignment is the third disc from this Duo manifestation. The opening "Micro Exit" has Chad Taylor's vibraphone spilling out around Rob Mazurek's grainy cornet solos, highlighting the pair's minimalist side. Then "Lifelines" punches into a jazzy lope, Taylor adding a big bass drum to the vibes, his whole kit lovingly recorded in a surround-sound splay. Most of the album keeps up with this bouncing clatter, the pair's crackling interplay recalling that of trumpeter Don Cherry and drummer Ed Blackwell in the 1970s and 80s. "Particle And Transfiguration" is like a call to battle, a charging fanfare riding a blurred drum-flux, Mazurek's mischievously capering cornet possessed of a volatile, crackling agility, ripping out over Taylor's groundwork. One moment the Duo will be rampaging over repetitive synth basslines, the next, they'll cut to a delicate vibes-piano-guitar section. Both aspects are combined with "Two Concepts For The Storage Of Light", which shunts mid-track, going from abstract pondering straight into stormy overdrive. -- Martin Longley Fragt: Ukendt! |
