Bryn Terfel SOME ENCHANTED EVENING GH

Bryn Terfel SOME ENCHANTED EVENING GH

Following on from his Something Wonderful CD, Bryn Terfel has done a bit of a repeat performance with this recording, even doubling up on some numbers. He's certainly an improvement on other opera singers who attempt to sing this repertoire, but there always remains the lack of true engagement that comes with not having actually ever sung any of the roles. This doesn't apply to all the numbers. "On the Street Where You Live", for example, is such a standard number in itself that it can withstand it. The same goes for "Oh What a Beautiful Morning" and "You'll Never Walk Alone", but "How to Handle a Woman" doesn't stand up to rolling Rs, over-enunciation or over-acting, to say nothing of "There is Nothing Like a Dame" or "Get Me to the Church on Time", complete with cockney accent. However, that said, Terfel has lots of oomph and personality which comes across enough to make this a valid recording, were it not for the production which is rather disturbing with Terfel sounding like he is singing from the wings. Paul Daniels provides a lively accompaniment with the English Northern Philharmonia. The Chorus of Opera North is surprising sloppy most of the time. -- Antonia Couling

They say humour and music shouldn't mix, but it seems no-one told leisurewear-clad Welsh rap octet Goldie Lookin' Chain: their Greatest Hits, a major-label compilation of the highlights of their last five self-released CD-Rs, is the rare comedy record that transcends its laugh-out-loud novelty. The gags they offer are seldom sophisticated - the presence of a song titled "Your Mother's Got A Penis" has probably already alerted you to that fact - but the jokes come thick and fast, and there's enough deft characterisation to leisurewear-clad GLC members Dwain Xain, Mr Love Eggs, and The Maggot to drag the likes of "Half-Man, Half-Machine" and "Soap Bar" into the realms of situation comedy. Many of their best ideas are stolen: UK Top 5 single "Guns Don't Kill People, Rappers Do" nabs a vocal hook from KRS-One's "Sound Of The Police", while "Self Suicide" makes a cheeky rip from '90s rap goths Gravediggaz. But for all the petty theft on show, the GLC aren't lacking in ideas. With the possible exception of the slimy R&B grind of "You Knows I Loves You" - which, of course, is meant to sound utterly, horribly sleazy - there's not a bad track here. --Louis Pattison

45.33 might well confuse some of the music purists convinced that great art and commerce must never mix. This 45-minute suite of music, you see, is the result of a commission from sportswear company Nike, who hired LCD Soundsystem's James Murphy to write music to accompany the perfect exercise workout. Murphy, perhaps aware that the gradual, building tempo and euphoric highs of a great run could be seen to closely mirror the dancefloor dynamic of a great DJ set, agreed, and the result is perhaps the most synthetic, funky, altogether club-like records to appear under the LCD name to date. Commencing with rising analogue synth notes, the piece shuffles into life on a sultry Studio 54 tip, a mid-tempo disco beat decorated with handclaps, euphoric piano, and soulful vocals. Before long, though, it's shifting and mixing, first through an alternate instrumental cut of "Something Great" (which would later appear in full on LCD's 2007 album Sound of Silver) then through phases of kosmiche electronica, velvety soul, and brass freak-outs--all intent on keeping the tempo pumping. Also included on this CD issue of 45.33 is three bonus tracks, the conga-tapping "Freak Out/Starry Eyes", a bleepy, dubbed-out mix of "North American Scum", and the bouncy bass grooves of "Hippie Priest Bum-Out". --Louis Pattison

Some of the best records are all about a mood. The Duel displays a kind of world-weariness bordering on despair, evidenced immediately by the languid vocal delivery and the sparse, laid-back, but intense sound of the band. The lyrics themselves may take a while to creep up on you. Moorer has never quite fit the Nashville mold, and her songs here certainly don't follow the Music Row formula. Instead they paint dark pictures of failed faith (the title tune), alcoholism, ("One on the House"), and death ("Sing Me to Sleep"). RS Field's perfect production owes more than a passing debt to Neil Young. If you think this all sounds depressing you'd be wrong. As with all great country music, exquisite execution, splendid sound and depth of feeling combine to create a cathartic, redemptive result. --Michael Ross, Amazon.com
