NERD In Search of...Se flere produkter fra Amazon"No-one Ever Really Dies" according to hip-hop uber-producers The Neptunes (aka Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo), who have reincarnated themselves (along with singing high school pal, Shay) as N*E*R*D, a crew of buddhist gang-bangers. And if that sounds like a contradiction too hard to reconcile, then you may just be right. In Search Of kicks off with N*E*R*Ds signature tune, "Lapdance", which purports to contain a socially conscious message but works best as a lascivious blast of brainless bump and grind that the group are hard pushed to better. As their moniker suggests, there's something distinctly awkward about these guys. Although more than competent musically, lyrically much of "In Search Of" sounds as if they're trying too hard to be different. To level his karma after "Lapdance", Shay feels compelled to blurt out "I just want your brain" to a prospective partner (on "Brain"). On "Provider", he attempts to soften his street-hustling activities by insisting to his boo that her welfare is his primary concern. The geek humour of the between-song skits falls completely flat. But when all fails they simply return to the tried and true. The insistent bassline of "Lapdance" reprises on "Truth Or Dare", along with stark dramatic strings and a guest vocal from Kelis. "Stay Together" ups the charm factor with saccharine psychedelia and harmonised backing vocals. "Baby Doll" rides on a punk bassline and mondo exotica chorus. "Tape You" begins as a slick street soul mantra about a guy videotaping his girl going through the motions and descends into two-minutes plus of orchestrated moans and groans. "Rock Star-Poser" is a mash of discordance and distortion. The record closes with the swaying "Bobby James" Shay's effects his best George Clinton barber-shop croon. With In Search Of, The Neptunes have set out on what promises to be an interesting journey. They just haven't decided on their destination. --Chris Campion Fragt: Ukendt! |

Hot Chip Made in the Dark (Deluxe Version - w/bonus DVD)Se flere produkter fra AmazonHot Chip have always been the sort of band happy to flaunt their intelligence, but the smartest trick they pull on Made in the Dark is to show a little wisdom, too. 2006's The Warning was a fine record, albeit one sometimes difficult to take seriously thanks to its taste for pop pastiche--here's the Prince track, there's a 2-step garage track--or the occasional ironic wisecrack. On their third album, though, it's satisfying to report Hot Chip sound like no one but themselves. That is, shuffling, synthesiser-smeared electro-pop with a gooey emotional core and, in the shape of Alexis Taylor, one of the greatest white-boy soul voices since that of his hero, Green Gartside of Scritti Politti. "Ready for the Floor" sounds halfway between Detroit techno and the soundtrack to a Nintendo RPG, Taylor's clear, honest vocal reaching out hopefully: "I'm hoping by chance/You might take this dance", while the album's title track is a slow piano ballad that finds him laid blue over the ruins of a love affair. There is mischief, too of course: take "Wrestlers", a dinky R&B track where the group show off their knowledge of wrestling slang. Even when they're ready to rumble, though, Hot Chip show off the sort of emotion and elation we've rarely seen since the glory days of New Order, and that's high praise indeed. --Louis Pattison Fragt: Ukendt! |

Minus the Bear Interpretaciones Del OsoSe flere produkter fra AmazonThe Seattle-based band Minus the Bear already mixes electronics and edgy rock-based sounds, so it makes sense that they'd get the reissue treatment; Interpretaciones finds their 2005 album Menos el Oso chopped and re-grooved. Most of the remixers choose to highlight the atmospheric ambient side of the band that usually percolates in the background, and it works surprisingly well. Of course, the most successful remixes often have only a tangential relationship to the original, and often seem like excuses for someone to make a bunch of fun noise on top of something else (and then get paid for it). Aphex Twin and Kevin Shields mastered the art of this in the '90s (and presumably were too expensive/ not available for this project) and Dark Baby's Nintendo-64-cut-and-paste-funk remix of "Hooray" and Morgan from the Blood Brothers' lovely, minimalist Robert-Wyatt-meets-Takemura take on "Pig War" likewise fit that mold. Juan Diego Flórez - Rossini AriasSe flere produkter fra AmazonThis disc of Rossini Arias by the rising young Peruvian tenor Juan Diego Flórez is a winner. He has a light lyric tenor of quality, stunning coloratura technique, and a real feeling for the Rossini style. He shines in these bravura arias, scattering high Cs and Ds with abandon. There aren't many tenors these days who can fearlessly negotiate the perils of arias like "Cessa di più resistere" from The Barber of Seville with such aplomb. Nor are there many who can capture both the pathos and the fevered intensity of "Oh fiamma souave" from La donna del lago. Even those who might wish for a warmer, sweeter sound in the bel canto repertory than Flòrez's brighter, more brilliant tones should welcome this auspicious solo debut.
