Italian Opera AriasSe flere produkter fra AmazonThis disc of Italian Opera Arias is a glorious debut recital by a tenor, who, if he sings the right roles and keeps way from jet-setting and too much singing, might just be the lyrico-spinto tenor we've been waiting for. He has the class of Carlo Bergonzi and a ringing tone which is somewhere between Domingo's big, dark sound and Pavarotti's brightness; he sings with a true mezza voce (not a falsetto); he always obeys the composer's markings and delineates character. He seems incapable of vulgarity, refusing to gulp or sob when a musically expressive gesture will do. The opening aria here--from L'Arlesiana--is so beautifully, touchingly sung that it's a heartbreaker; he doesn't take the usually opted-for high note near the end, but never fear: in the Traviata and Bohème excerpts, Villazon offers big, whopping high Cs. Juan Diego Flórez - Rossini AriasSe flere produkter fra AmazonThis disc of Rossini Arias by the rising young Peruvian tenor Juan Diego Flórez is a winner. He has a light lyric tenor of quality, stunning coloratura technique, and a real feeling for the Rossini style. He shines in these bravura arias, scattering high Cs and Ds with abandon. There aren't many tenors these days who can fearlessly negotiate the perils of arias like "Cessa di più resistere" from The Barber of Seville with such aplomb. Nor are there many who can capture both the pathos and the fevered intensity of "Oh fiamma souave" from La donna del lago. Even those who might wish for a warmer, sweeter sound in the bel canto repertory than Flòrez's brighter, more brilliant tones should welcome this auspicious solo debut. Haydn - Nelson Mass; Kleine OrgelmesseSe flere produkter fra AmazonLord Nelson was a hero not just to the British but to all Europeans who felt tyrannised by Napoleon. The Hungarian Radio and Television Chorus capture the euphoric mood that prevailed at the premiere of Haydn's Mass for Anguished Times, which took place in September 1800 just as word arrived of Nelson's victory at Aboukir Bay. The work has been the Nelson Mass ever since. The chorus' robustly joyful singing is tempered by occasional errant consonants. The singers pronounce the Latin with soft Cs and hard Gs which makes them sound old-fashioned. The modern instrument Nikolaus Esterházy Sinfonia is arrestingly stern, the strings vibrant, the timps and trumpets prompt, the organ quite cathedralish for a studio recording. The whiplash soprano Viktoria Loukianetz sounds to be on fire as she shoots out of the chorus to a top B flat in the Kyrie. She powers through the famous Gloria, not altogether sensitively. The other soloists tend to pull down at the pitch. They are a disappointment. The Little Organ Mass, which makes up the disc, is a simple choral setting dating from 1777. The longest movement is the Benedictus which is usually the shortest. It is scored for soprano solo and twisting organ obbligato. Rossini: Stabat MaterSe flere produkter fra AmazonThe Stabat Mater is full of Rossini's best late-style writing, with plenty of virtuoso vocal lines, great tunes, and exciting choruses. This new CD takes a decidedly Romantic view of the work (as Chailly often does with Rossini), using a large orchestra and chorus and lots of grandly operatic gestures, and the singers are big-voiced and extroverted. The Dutch players and singers are superbly schooled and make joyful, full sounds, and there's never a dull moment under Chailly. The soloists please in different degrees: Barbara Frittoli is an exciting singer, and her "Inflammatus" is, indeed, flaming, with big high Cs, but her vibrato is just on the cusp of getting in the way of the music. Sonia Ganassi is milkily smooth in the mezzo part and the two women meld well. Pertusi's bass-baritone is the right weight for the music and while Giuseppe Sabbatini's voice may not be as beautiful as Pavarotti's or, heaven forbid, Björling's, he gets through the "Cujus animam" gloriously. --Robert Levine, Amazon.com Fragt: Ukendt! |
