Time has upped the ante for what synths have to do to be scary, but Vega's new partners, Mika Vainio and Ilpo Vaisanen of the Finnish group Pan Sonic (formerly Panasonic), have the cold winds of death trapped in their little black boxes. Vega's voice, treated with savage slap-back echo, intones dark, fragmentary phrases about war, desire, banality, and meaninglessness--the effect is a little like Elvis singing Samuel Beckett--while his partners' electronics gurgle, buzz, and cough up silicon blood, sidling away from recognizable notes and reliable beats. Unlike more rhythm-oriented albums like Rainforest and Propagation, this collection of six Rich compositions journeys through a thick musical ether which seems like it could seep out of your speakers and enshroud your room. Despite the presence of gongs, bells, drums, and steel guitar amidst the synths, the overall feel of these compositions is very spacy. Even the percussive sounds that gradually perforate the dense aural fog of "Bioelectric Plasma" ultimately remain ensnared within the track's overwhelming ethereality. The standout cut is "Black Skies," whose intense bursts of dissonant noise over a bed of delicate drones seem to herald doomsday. Pan Sonic A [VINYL]Se flere produkter fra AmazonFormerly known as Panasonic (before a certain Japanese corporation made known its dislike for their moniker) the Finnish duo Pan Sonic creates radical, contemporary electronic music. A goes even further than its predecessor, 1997's Kulma, in its quest for purity. Like an episode of the TV show ER minus all the doctors and patients, the record is about the machines' point of view. This is the sound of fibrillators sighing and electrocardiographs hiccupping, of circuits barely connecting and instruments running by themselves while nobody's looking. It's hard to fathom what Pan Sonic could possibly do after this album, since they've painted themselves into an abstract corner. In the meantime, A is like a Pollock painting: the point is not necessarily meaning or a "narrative" but rather a quasi-feral reaction to elemental sounds. --Elisabeth Vincentelli Fragt: Ukendt! |
