Maria McKee Late DecemberSe flere produkter fra AmazonEven in the early days of her solo career, Maria McKee had a penchant for penning dramatic melodies that seemed more conducive to Broadway than to contemporary radio. In fact, the former Lone Justice frontwoman makes reference to criticisms of that theatrical style in between songs on her Live Acoustic Tour CD. Pandering to no one, McKee continues to distance herself from her country roots on her sixth studio release, Late December, writing what might be best described as 'pop-ras,' miniature contemporary pseudo-operas sung in open-throated vibrato. "Destine" is a prime example, echoing Queen's A Night at the Opera with it's dramatic vocals and grandiose guitar solo. "Scene of the Affair" evokes a similar sensibility, as McKee mournfully sings "Four walls and a bed/best to let the dead rest with the dead." Those who prefer the old Maria will find a handful of songs to satiate their thirsty musical pallet. "My First Night Without You" has a soul/country cross that allows McKee to vocally shine; other notable moments include the gospel-infused ending to the title track and the infectious '60s Motown styling of "No Other Way to Love You." The one song that will likely please fans of both musical camps is McKee's inclusion of "A Good Heart," a track that she wrote at 18 years of age which became a worldwide hit for an Irish artist named Feargal Sharkey. --Denise Sheppard Fragt: Ukendt! |

Spooks S.I.O.S.O.S. Volume OneSe flere produkter fra AmazonThese days, America's hip-hop purists long for a respite from the synth-based thug-rap currently enjoying airwave domination. Listeners who appreciate a less abrasive form of the music will find some salvation in S.I.O.S.O.S., the debut release from the four-MC, one-vocalist East Coast collective known as Spooks. S.I.O.S.O.S. is notable for its live instrumentation (with a few judiciously jazzy samples to spice up the mix), but its standout feature is Ming-Xia's soaring vocals, which add a sultry counterpoint to the flamenco styling of "The Mission" and haunting emphasis to the bhangra-tinged "Safe House". The album's weakness lies in the remaining members' uninspired rhyme skills, which fail to match their vocalist's capabilities. Inevitably, Spooks will suffer comparisons to other organic hip-hop outfits, such as the lyrically superior Fugees or the trippier Morcheeba. Alongside these groups' best efforts, Spooks' S.I.O.S.O.S. is not classic material, but, as an antidote to today's commercial rap overdose, it is a solid first effort. -- Rebecca Levine Fragt: Ukendt! |

Aaron Neville The Very Best of AaronSe flere produkter fra AmazonPossessor of one of contemporary music's most instantly recognizable voices, Aaron Neville has a recording career that spans nearly 40 years. While he started out as a bona fide purveyor of New Orleans-flavored R&B in the '60s, Neville has added his distinctive styling to pop fare in more recent years. Miraculously, even though he's recorded a diverse range of material--from Hoagy Carmichael's "Stardust" to a cover of the Originals' classic "The Bells"--Neville has lost none of his innate soulfulness. At last, there's a complete compilation that is a glorious testament to his skills as a vocal master. Thankfully, the original version of "Tell It Like It Is," Neville's 1967 R&B standard, is included here alongside his very first charted hit, 1960's "Over You." Neville's smash duet with Linda Ronstadt, "Don't Know Much" (1989), is naturally a standout, but equally impressive are tracks culled from the vocal stylist's four non-Christmas albums for A&M: "Don't Take Away My Heaven," a Louisiana workout of Chuck Berry's "You Never Can Tell"; the infectious "Angola Bound"; a beautiful reading of the Stylistics' "Betcha By Golly Wow"; and, as a bonus, a brilliant reading of Sam Cooke's "A Change Is Gonna Come," recorded with his brothers for the 1989 "Yellow Moon." An essential collection and a reminder of Neville's undeniable artistry. --David Nathan Fragt: Ukendt! |

I Am Kloot I Am Kloot [VINYL]Se flere produkter fra AmazonTwo years on from their first release and being shoved under the collective woolly hat of the "new acoustic movement", I Am Kloot prove that, like many of their turn-of-the-century contemporaries, there's a lot more to them than introspective acoustic strumathons and scruffy Manchurian accents. From the whimsical romance of "From Your Favourite Sky" ("Who am I to dare to pull the stars from your favourite sky?" croons John Bramwell) to the the lo-fi rumblings of "Life in the Day", this is distorted British folk infused with a crusty northern accent and trickling melodies. "Untitled No. 1" demonstrates their ethos admirably, benefiting from a lazy but essential melody that the dirty, parched beast of "Life in the Day" seems to lack. (That's surprising, as Ian Broudie has produced this along with several others here.) The melodic drought clears up though and the songs are free to reveal their character, imagination and scope, following country lanes of heartbreak and dusty tracks leading to romantic regrets, with "Here for the World" sounding like it could have been written and performed by Bono (at least in terms of the wry, sardonic delivery anyway). "We've no reminders / No old photograph / Did you come for the money / Will you leave for the lack?" Bramwell asks, rhetorically. In fact, there's more Snow Patrol and Johnny Cash here than Elbow. I Am Kloot is a black piece of work, ambitious and experienced--the tale of a weary traveller, sick with the world, but with the glory of it reflected in his tired eyes. Against the odds, I Am Kloot have managed to produce a classic, individual album of their own eccentric styling. --Cortman Virtue Fragt: Ukendt! |

Broadcast The Noise Made By PeopleSe flere produkter fra AmazonBack in 1997, Warp Records released a quirky mini-album of rare material from its newest signings, a little known experimental pop band from Birmingham called Broadcast. Eyebrows were raised. Why had Warp--a hard-edged techno label famed for its avant-garde output from electronic pioneers like Aphex Twin signed this quirky, retro- obsessed West-Midlands five-piece? The reason is simple: Broadcast are a very talented band. This much is proved by their brilliant debut, The Noise Made By People. The album's skewed electronic pop and retro-futurism most resembles the analogue styling of Stereolab and original Krautrock musicians such as Can and Neu! Yet Broadcast's sound is wonderfully unique; an enchanting mixture of analogue synth sounds and west coast psychedelia fused with nineties electronica and indie-pop sensibilities. With the addition of haunting and occasionally chilling vocals from singer Trish Keenan, the effect is at times mesmerising. The Noise Made By People is an eerie, uplifting and enchanting debut album from one of Britain's best-kept secrets. -- Matt Anniss Fragt: Ukendt! |

Kylie Minogue Body LanguageSe flere produkter fra AmazonBefore recording Body Language, Kylie Minogue must have wondered how to follow Fever. That was an album that not only prompted six million people to grab a copy but sparked a national obsession with the diminutive pop diva's posterior. Well, breaking Madonna's record as the female solo artist with the greatest UK chart-topping longevity isn't a bad start. Fifteen years after Kylie first reached the pinnacle of the UK chart with "I Should Be So Lucky", "Slow" took the mini minx to the top for the seventh time. Oozing with the same entrancing blend of seductive electronica, spiralling rhythms and breathy vocals that sent hormones raging with "Can't Get You Out of My Head", "Slow" was cowritten by Minogue and is easily the finest moment on Body Language. Despite the army of writers, Body Language is a surprisingly cohesive serving of R&B-lite, laced with a sprinkling of Prince-style 1980s disco-fuelled funk, such as "Still Standing", which finds Kylie pronouncing "You know you want it!" amid a bed of grinding bass and squelching synths. There are moments such as "Red Blooded Woman" when the generic-pop production machine all but eradicates any sense of Kylie, but on the whole the formulaic funk and predictable pop styling is outweighed by the soap survivor's inimitable presence. As a result, Body Language is sure to work its magic. --Christopher Barrett Fragt: Ukendt! |

Five FiveSe flere produkter fra AmazonInitially lumped in with Westlife, Boyzone et al, as just another fabricated pop boy band, Five were one of the few bands who did actually stand out from the crowd of bland ballads and Irish pretty boys. Eschewing soppy love songs in favour of far more in-your-face rowdy pop, Five bounced onto the scene with attitude, slightly more streetwise styling than their contemporaries and some truly great pop tunes. From the inspired sampling of Joan Jett & The Blackheart's "I Love Rock'n'Roll" on "Everybody Get Up" to the sing-along and clap your hands party vibes of "Got The Feelin'", it's hard not to be seduced by Five's charm. Things do go a bit Backstreet Boys-esque on weaker tracks like "Until The Time Is Through" and "Satisfied" but these are forgivable blips on an otherwise stellar trajectory. The opening line of "Slam Dunk The Funk" says it all--Five are "Five bad boys with the power to rock you". --Helen Marquis Fragt: Ukendt! |

Cassius Au ReveSe flere produkter fra AmazonIf you thought French house music was a mere flash in the pan, prepare to think again. Avoiding the pitfalls of sticking to one genre, Au Reve practically overflows with innovation and should be seen as a real milestone in dance culture. After spearheading the trend for retro 80s styling, wily duo Cassius have now moved forward, championing real vocals over samples, employing beefier rhythms and forging a real sense of identity. From the wriggly, anthemic funk of "The Sound of Violence" to the vocoder-purred synth-fest "Telephone Love" there's cross-pollination at work here, executed in the most fascinating fashion. "Thrilla" cleverly dovetails the old-school breaks of Todd Terry with hip-house rapping, "Under Influence" updates "Miss You"-era Rolling Stones and the mighty Jocelyn Brown lends her immense lungs to the galloping "I'm a Woman". They even have the audacity to splice in the odd rock guitar, should the mood take them. Just like the group's namesake this floats like a butterfly and stings like a bee. -- Paul Tierney Fragt: Ukendt! |

Take 6 We Wish You a Merry ChristmasSe flere produkter fra AmazonThe follow-up to the Grammy-winning He Is Christmas, We Wish You a Merry Christmas finds Take 6 at their finest. The sextet's a cappella melodies paved the way for R&B boy groups Boys II Men and may recall Manhattan Transfer's multipart harmonic convergence, yet they continue to be unmatched in their ingenious take on popular jazz-vocal gospel. This outing finds the Seventh Day Adventist-affiliated outfit firmly locked into their signature vocal blend, augmenting their doo-wop a cappella styling with the occasional piano, light-handed bass, guitar, drums, and the cool blue saxophone of Kirk Whalum. A few songs are embellished by a triad of female harmonies and Brian McKnight (brother of founding member Claude McKnight) appears on "The Christmas Song." Chestnuts like "Silver Bells," "Go Tell It on the Mountain," and "Joy to the World," while happily recognizable, ring out especially merry as rendered by these fresh fellows. --Paige La Grone Fragt: Ukendt! |

Craig David Slicker Than Your AverageSe flere produkter fra AmazonSlicker Than Your Average is the second album by Craig David who took the world by storm with his boastful debut, Born to Do It. More than two years later, David has slogged through the minefields of sudden stardom and lived to sing about it, which he does with stylish aplomb. He has sacrificed some of his milk-fed innocence, but none of his braggadocio, as the title attests. His sound is harder, more anxious, and much more suitable for clubs than the soft, breezy nu-soul of his first outing. This time he's dealing with darker stuff, whether it's the press's relentless scrutiny of him or warning of the dangerous pitfalls of fame ("I'm not the man I used to be"). He's not the man he used to be, for fame seems to have shaken the scales from his eyes. This one-time wide-eyed romantic no longer pines for his perfect love, instead casting a rather jaundiced eye at the women vying for attention on "What's Your Flava." But his newfound complexity and edge makes for a much more interesting album than his debut. It's a relief to watch Craig David trading in his clean-cut pop styling for a much more urban edge, rife with old school R&B and hip-hop style. --Jaan Uhelszki Fragt: Ukendt! |

Joey Negro Nite:Life Vol.8: Mixed By Joey NegroSe flere produkter fra AmazonDrawn from the more exotic side of house, this eighth instalment of the Nite:life series pulses to a superior crop of sun-kissed soul and Latin rhythms. Having already asserted his style credentials by giving the theme from the film American Beauty a sultry house make-over for Top 10 single "American Dream"--under the guise of Jakatta, one of his many production monikers--DJ Joey Negro here distils an evening's worth of impeccable listening. Slinking from the jazz-funk swing of Jon Cutler's "It's Yours" and the salsa party horns and cow-bell beats of Negrocan's "Aquela Esquina", to the classic funk styling of David Bendeth's "Feel the Real" and Fini Dolo's smouldering "Blow", clichés and chart tunes are deftly avoided in favour of grooves that are as rare as they are smooth. Perhaps some are too smooth for the dance floor; although the glistening disco of "Inspired" from Satoshi Tomiie and Sandy Riviera & Jose Burgos's "Jazz It" ride a compelling bass beat. But that's part of the charm of the ever-present 1970s jazz-fusion vibe--it'll sound just as good in the living room as it will in style-conscious bars everywhere. -- Dan Gennoe Fragt: Ukendt! |

Tom Waits The Black RiderSe flere produkter fra AmazonSummoned to Hamburg, Germany, to write music for a live stage production of Robert Wilson's The Black Rider, musical mastermind Waits took to the task at hand with gusto, assembling an eclectic crew of musicians to become "the pit band [he'd] always dreamed of." Several years later Waits assembled another "orchestra" in San Francisco to record many of the songs he'd written for the live production. Those tracks are found here, alongside a few rough gems from sessions in Hamburg. You'll find some musical matter familiar to Waits fans: accordions, carnivals, violas, banjos, the devil (a key figure in The Black Rider), a singing saw, bassoons, and trombones. Waits' many voices tell the rather disjointed story with a variety of musical styling, and the assembled whole is pretty much a sum of its parts (but at least they're interesting parts): a touch of Day of the Dead, a whiff of carny, a nod to Brecht, a dash of film noir, and the scent of narcosis (William Burroughs makes an appearance here). Not easy listening, by any means, but a feast for the ears. --Lorry Fleming Fragt: Ukendt! |

Sharon Burch Colors of My HeartSe flere produkter fra AmazonColors of My Heart, as with previous releases by Navajo native Sharon Burch, blends contemporary folksy acoustic styling with rich Diné musical heritage. Paying homage to her mother's people, the land to which she is inextricably bound, and the eternal spiral of life, Burch enchants listeners of all backgrounds with an accessible earthy femininity. Accompanying herself on acoustic guitar, the artist sings in both English and her native tongue, her voice ringing out with bell-like clarity, suffused with sweetness and weight. William Eaton's warm tones provide a low-end on bass and synth guitar, and the songs are further filled with sounds of silver flute, violin and cello, drums and rattle. The cozy and practical intimacy of "We Are Here" and the title cut gather the listener in like a warm fire on a November night, while "Spotted Horse" surprises with a Navajo twist on the doo-wop sound, and "Little Star Shine" joyously celebrates motherhood. Mariah Carey Greatest Hits [2CD]Se flere produkter fra AmazonThese days she's fodder for tabloids and late-night comics, but way back in the 1990s Mariah Carey reigned as one of the world's bestselling female performers. This two-CD Greatest Hits collection offers up chart-topping evidence why, for better or worse, Mariah's five-octave, pop/R&B styling set the diva standard. Culled from her five albums on Sony, (before signing to Virgin), and you get all the facets of her platinum-plus sound. From the soulful smoulder of her 1990 debut "Vision of Love" (still one of her best tracks), to the coyer than thou duet with Jay Z ("Heartbreaker"), Carey thrills, trills and hits notes that only canines comprehend. Fans will gobble this collection up but inclusion of some of Carey's more adventurous remixes (eg: the Puffy produced "Fantasy", featuring ODB) might have made this package more noteworthy. --Amy Linden Fragt: Ukendt! |
