The album-opening "Richard Pryor Addresses a Tearful Nation" is Henry's most audacious move to date, as his smoky voice channels the comedian's tragic spirit while a saxophone break from free-jazz titan Ornette Coleman provides achingly poignant punctuation. The rest of the song cycle ranges from the sophisticated atmospherics of "Stop" (adapted by Henry's sister-in-law Madonna into her hit single, "Don't Tell Me") to the insistent funk of "Rough and Tumble". The production by Henry and Craig Street gives the music plenty of room to breathe, augmenting the organic interplay of guitarist Marc Ribot, pianist Brad Mehldau and bassist Me'shell Ndegeocello with bittersweet string arrangements. In return, this talented, mostly-female collection of vocalists, have made Monster-In-Law one of the best compilations of the year. Virtually every track on this album is a success, from "Won't U Please B Nice" (trademark bite from Nellie McKay) to "Don't Wait Too Long" from rising jazz titan Madeleine Peyroux. Sara Bareilles' "Love on the Rocks," is a piece of pop so addictive that it will almost certainly land you in musical rehab. What more is there to say? Steely Dan Pretzel LogicSe flere produkter fra AmazonPretzel Logic marked a transition for Steely Dan from a studio-bound rock band producing hits such as "Reeling in the Years" and "Do It Again" to a looser constellation of studio musicians under the direction of songwriters Walter Becker and Donald Fagen. That later version of Steely Dan would paint its masterpiece with Aja. Pretzel Logic is much more playful than that, and also jazzier than the albums that came before. The jazz intentions are made perfectly clear on "Parker's Band", a swinging tribute to bebop titan Charlie Parker, and a crafty cover of Duke Ellington's "East St. Louis Toodle-oo". The lyrics displayed their own twisted logic, presenting a tumble of images in search of a unifying principle that most often remained elusive. Steely Dan was that rare act that could work such purposeful obscurity to its advantage: "Rikki Don't Lose That Number" was a top-five hit even though nobody had a clue as to what it was about. That the producers of this record have a genuine empathy with their subject is confirmed by their inclusion of a live version of the triumphantly nihilist "Folsom Prison Blues" (once identified by Ice-T, no less, as a progenitor of gangsta rap) taped at one of Cash's famous prison concerts . Once again, selections include traditional carols, seasonal standards and newly penned yuletide numbers, mostly recorded during the 60s. Not surprisingly, there is yet another version of "White Christmas". This time Diana Ross & the Supremes provide a schmaltzy Disney-esque reading... bah humbug. Far better is Diana and the gals' "Little Bright Star", a stomping pocket symphony. Remarkably, the titan-tonsilled Kim Weston injects genuine emotion into hubby William "Mickey" Stevenson's otherwise flimsy "Wish You A Merry Christmas". More substantial is a stately "Silent Night", which finds the Four Tops hooking up with Aretha Franklin. The Four Tops also contribute a bizarre version of "'Twas The Night Before Christmas", which appears to be narrated by a black Detroit equivalent of "the laughing Policeman".
