Dave Gahan Paper MonstersSe flere produkter fra AmazonPaper Monsters marks the solo debut of Dave Gahan, frontman of Depeche Mode and a hedonist of some distinction. It's been a long time coming, so you'd expect the album to be brimming with ideas, messy even, a testament to Gahan's frustration at having to sing Vince Clarke and Martin Gore's songs for all this time while his own were filed away for future use. Yet strangely it's wholly consistent, not the wild work of someone newly liberated, as if Gahan had written it in one go rather than utilising the best of 20 years' worth of unrecorded tunes. There are basically three types of track here: There's powerful, Depeche-style glam ("Dirty Sticky Floors", "Bottle Living"), quiet urban mood-music ("A Little Piece", "Bitter Apple", "Stay") and rumbling industrial atmospherics, usually rising to an impressive crescendo ("Black and Blue Again", "Hidden Houses", "Goodbye"). Lyrically speaking, it's autobiographical, dealing with Gahan's trouble with relationships and intoxicants and, though it lacks Gore's sense of drama and perversity, it does have a maudlin charm. Occasionally it becomes samey in mood, needing a touch of Gore's pervy spice, but all in all Gahan, along with co-writer and performer Knox Chandler, does a fine and tasteful job. Hopefully Paper Monsters will give him the confidence to really let rip. --Dominic Wills Inkl. fragt: Ukendt |

Woody Herman and his Orchestra V Disc Years Vol's 1 & 2Se flere produkter fra AmazonThe band Woody Herman led between 1944 and 1947, known as the First Herd, was a wonderfully boisterous and whole-hearted affair. It boasted such fine and highly individual soloists as trombonist Bill Harris, tenor saxophonist Flip Phillips and trumpeter Pete Candoli. Arranger-composers Ralph Burns and Neal Hefti were also on the strength. During these years, too, the US Government's V-Disc label, providing recorded music to the armed forces, was in full production and Herman proved a great favourite with the troops. This double CD pack presents the band in full, together with associated small groups and guest artists, playing versions of their favourite numbers ("Apple Honey", "Blowin' Up A Storm", "Happiness Is Just A Thing Called Joe") plus a number of jazz standards. There is material taken from live concerts, radio shows and even the soundtrack of a Hollywood film. It all adds up to a rich selection from the working repertoire of a great band, much of it recorded away from the inhibiting atmosphere of the studio. -- Dave Gelly Inkl. fragt: Ukendt |

John Frusciante Shadows Collide With PeopleSe flere produkter fra AmazonRather than dwell once more on John Frusciante's problematic narcotic history, it's far healthier to report that Shadows Collide--the fourth solo album from the Red Hot Chili Peppers' guitarist--sports a thoroughly clean bill of health. Unencumbered by narrow rock strictures, Frusciante seems to have excused himself from the Chili's staple funk-punk approach (his recent listening preferences span early OMD, Van Der Graaf Generator, Roy Wood and Steeleye Span) and Shadows Collide is all the better for the change of scenery. Yes, there are nods to the parent band ("Song to Sing When I'm Older") and both Flea and Chad Smith are participating guests of honour, but this is Frusciante's show. While there are interludes of electronic Eno-esque oddity (the squall of static and synth choirs on "00Ghost27") this is mostly strident, neo-psychedelic rock begging comparison, vocally and musically, with some of Grant Hart's post Husker Du solo work; a song such as "Carvel" apes the pre-Gillan pomp-opera approach of early Deep Purple. Elsewhere, fascinating treatments (the electric seabird guitars on "Second Walk", the spin-dry vocal oscillations on "Regret") abound and Frusciante's love of the mellotron (flutes, choirs et al) lend proceedings an alluring antique appeal. Think of this as a spiritual halfway house between Candy Apple Grey and In the Court of the Crimson King. --Kevin Maidment Inkl. fragt: Ukendt |

Lloyd Cole Music in a Foreign LanguageSe flere produkter fra AmazonWhatever it is Lloyd Cole does all day, it doesn't involve coming up with radical shifts in artistic direction. Music in a Foreign Language, Cole's first album since 1995's excellent Love Story, is of a piece with the six he produced in rather more productive decades before that: Music in a Foreign Language is another collection of deftly written, wryly observed and balefully sung ballads by a consistently fine songwriter. It also includes what is, for Cole, a rare foray into interpretation, with a version of Nick Cave's "People Ain't No Good". Music in a Foreign Language is at least distinguishable from its predecessors in approach, if not style: Cole made the album at home, forsaking the studio for his Apple Mac. Just as his contemporary Roddy Frame did on his superb Surf, Cole has built these songs around his voice and acoustic guitar, with a minimum of instrumental embellishments. It's something Cole should have done before now--though as literate and clever as ever, he sounds much less knowing and arch than previously, like a man who has learnt the difference between confessing and merely telling tales. --Andrew Mueller Inkl. fragt: Ukendt |

Christina Aguilera Back to BasicsSe flere produkter fra AmazonBack to Basics, Christina Aguilera's first disc in four years, refines and clarifies the--let's call it "sexy"--aura surrounding this platinum firebrand. Here, the best belter in a class that counts Jessica Simpson and Britney Spears on its roll call has turned her attention to love songs: the supercharged and ubiquitous first single "Ain't No Other Man," for one, and the hushed stunner "Save Me from Myself" for another. That doesn't mean she's foresworn being nasty, though. Dive deep into this set, past the gorgeous crackle that frames the old-school jazz-, blues-, and soul-inspired tracks on the first disc, and you'll reach a playful and familiar raunch; "Candyman" celebrates a "one-stop shop" who "makes the panties drop" to a boogie-woogie beat, and "Nasty Naughty Boy" sends out a heated, big-beated invitation to "sip on my champagne/Cause I'm gonna give you a little taste/Of the sugar below my waist." Thoughtful listeners should snap out of their fascination with Xtina's undiminished yet newly un-tramp-like sexuality, though, because what they'll really want to focus on throughout these 22 tracks is the honest-to-God artistry. While the rock producer Linda Perry helps disc two pop in interesting and unexpected ways (check the muffled blues number "I Got Trouble" and "Mercy on Me," an obvious nod to Fiona Apple), DJ Premier, a mainstay on Jay-Z and Nas projects, pipes a batch of aural high-fives into the nostalgia-bitten first disc (the deep-down funk of "Back in the Day," the strut-strut early hip-hop sound of "Still Dirrty"). Their nudges aside, though, Back to Basics is all Aguilera's baby--she executive-produced, and she's found herself artistically. Nobody would argue, in fact, if she swiveled around the chorus to "Ain't No Other Man," written for her husband, and aimed it at herself: "You got soul, you got class/You got style, you're bada--." --Tammy La Gorce Inkl. fragt: Ukendt |

Paula Cole This FireSe flere produkter fra AmazonAfter a promising but overlooked debut album, Paula Cole kept the bills paid with a fateful stint as Peter Gabriel's vocal foil on his 1994 Secret World tour. Gabriel's immersion in richly theatrical, primal vocals only magnified Cole's already fevered attack; it's obvious that his sense of adventure as a producer and writer also struck conceptual sparks with the Massachusetts singer-songwriter. This Fire, Cole's self-produced 1996 breakthrough, finds her investing her songs with outsized emotions, framed by consistently inventive arrangements built around Cole's keyboards, and reaching a zeitgeist-piercing intensity on "Where Have All the Cowboys Gone?" and "I Don't Want to Wait", making Cole seem very much like Fiona Apple's older, slightly less cracked sister. --Sam Sutherland Inkl. fragt: Ukendt |

Johnny Cash UnearthedSe flere produkter fra AmazonOver the course of five mesmerising CDs, Unearthed shows us just how Johnny Cash's now-legendary handful of recordings for American Records came to be. Four discs feature previously unreleased tracks from the famed Rick Rubin-produced sessions. Through their inconsistencies and quirks (and, more often than not, brilliance), they shed light on how Cash's final records were shaped, edited and produced. Here we get some creative pairings: Fiona Apple providing guest vocals on Cat Stevens' "Father & Son" and the late Joe Strummer duetting with Cash on Bob Marley's "Redemption Song". Neither are the definitive statements that some of Cash's covers from this period are (his glorious takes on Nick Lowe and Danzig, to name just two), but they're still very much worth hearing. Most riveting are the numerous traditional numbers, the songs that were clearly closest to the Man in Black's heart. "Banks of the Ohio", Billy Joe Shaver's "Old Chunk of Coal", Stephen Foster's "Hard Times" and the entire disc of previously unreleased gospel tunes are powerful statements, tunes where you feel privileged to hear Cash--despite declining health and failing voice--sing one more time, the way he wanted. The last disc of this monumental set is a "best-of" compilation of tracks that did make it on the American individual discs, a reminder of just how groundbreaking these sessions were. Perhaps the biggest highlight in this awe-inspiring set is its vast liner note, a loving collection of essays and recollections that highlight the history and stories behind this eclectic array of songs. --Jason Verlinde Inkl. fragt: Ukendt |

Jean-Michel Jarre Odyssey Through Oxygene: Remixes [Enhanced]Se flere produkter fra AmazonA remix album compiled from the singles "Oxygene 8" and "10", Odyssey Through 02 is a big step forward for Jarre. What sets it apart from Chronlogie 6 is that the mixing duties were carried out by Parisien DJ Claude Monnet and it is his presence that ensures this album rests comfortably along side other dance compilations. The album is divided into three phases: Phase 1 (hip hop and ambient), Phase 2 (trance) and Phase 3 (house); all feature remixes from some of the best-known producers and DJs in the business, including Apollo Four Forty, DJ Cam and Tetsuya Komuro. However, the real highlights come from some of the lesser known acts, such as the German group Resistance D and The Sunday Club. The album also contains a computer program for PCs (Pentium with 32MB) and Apple Macs (Power PC) which allows you to create real time computer graphics in sync with the music on this (or any) CD. The CD is worth it for this software alone. -- Colin Neal Inkl. fragt: Ukendt |

Geri Halliwell Scream If You Wanna Go FasterSe flere produkter fra AmazonLike her or loathe her, Geri Halliwell can't seem to do anything quietly, which is why her second solo album is appropriately titled Scream if you Wanna Go Faster. Gone are the strings, breathy vocals and Diva like aspirations of her debut Schizophonic, Geri instead settling on a more straightforward pop approach. After the pointless motor-engine samples of "Dragster" (bizarrely a track on their own) she launches into "Scream if you Wanna Go Faster", a 1960s tinged rock track. What follows is a rather hotchpotch of style and influences that refuse to settle into a cohesive whole. Geri serves up helpings of acoustic ballads in "Circle Round the Moon" and "Love is the Only Light", up-beat funk with "Shake Your Bootie Cutie" and "Feels Like Sex". She is again extolling the virtues of girl power in "Strength of a Woman and even slips back into Spice Girls mode for "Don't Call Me Baby", which sounds rather similar to her former group's "Stop". Geri's vocal range is particularly limited but she wisely never stretches herself. The bad apple and easily the worst song on the album is her pointless, tacky cover of "It's Raining Men", which manages to trample all over the melody and subvert the innocent playful lyrics of the original and create something rather more tawdry. Penultimate track "Heaven and Hell (Being Geri Halliwell)" is an enjoyable send-up of her celebrity image and a poke at tabloid journalists but Heaven and Hell is also a fitting description of this brave but ultimately flawed second album. -- Duncan Whitlam Inkl. fragt: Ukendt |

Supergrass In It for the MoneySe flere produkter fra AmazonThey could only record at their Cornish studio when the tide was in, you know. "The acoustics", apparently. But what an investment that tide almanac was. From the vein-busting opener "In It For The Money" to the stoopid, human-beatbox closer of "Sometimes I Make You Sad", Supergrass's second album fairly defines the term "classic". "Going Out" swivels on an outrageous, 14-bar passage of Memphis brass and buzzes like the Beatles on the roof at Apple, while "Sun Hits The Sky" has all the furious bass-runs of the Who's "I Can See For Miles". And "Late In The Day" breaks into a guitar solo of such unindulgent homesick beauty it could cause pavements to weep. God would have to buy a Gibson and crib off John Lennon to top half of the songs on Money. -- Caitlin Moran Inkl. fragt: Ukendt |

Ed Harcourt Here Be MonstersSe flere produkter fra AmazonHere Be Monsters is the follow-up to Ed Harcourt's debut mini-album Maplewood and sees the singer/songwriter developing further on the gentle melancholy of his previous efforts with the help of Death In Vegas' in co-production and Gil Norton (Pixies) and Dave Fridmann sharing mixing duties. "God Protect Your Soul" combines an anguished lament ("I need to build a wall around me") with bluesy harmonica and trumpets to create the kind of rambling lyrics and off-kilt melodies a piano-led Elliot Smith might make. "Beneath The Heart of Darkness" starts in a similar fashion but one third in and it slips off into a sound mash of guitars and radio interference, then drifts back again to its gentle lullaby. While "Apple of My Eye" starts promisingly, with its quiet proclamation--"I'm sick of this angst"--it quickly becomes clear that Ed certainly isn't. One for all those who appreciate their music full of understated despair. -- Caroline Butler Inkl. fragt: Ukendt |

Dolores O'Riordan Are You Listening?Se flere produkter fra AmazonIt's been a long wait for the solo debut from Irish icon Dolores O'Riordan. After all, the Cranberries issued their swan song in 2001. After their breakup, O'Riordan collaborated with Germany's Jam and Spoon, Italy's Zucchero, and David Lynch composer Angelo Badalamenti. She also appeared, as herself, in the 2006 comedy Click. All the while, she toiled away on her first solo effort. Fortunately, good things come to those who wait. Co-produced by Youth (the Verve, U2), Are You Listening? is a throwback to 1980s-era Siouxsie and the Banshees and Sinead O'Connor--sweeping keyboards, forceful drumming, and muscular guitar work. It may seem like a melodramatic move, but the music never overwhelms the slight yet steely figure at the center of the maelstrom, particularly on the lilting "Ordinary Day" and haunting "Black Widow." Cranberries fans expecting something more demure may be taken aback, but O'Riordan's supple voice should win over most skeptics. And lyrically, she compensates with tender words inspired by her husband ("Apple of My Eye"), the death of her mother-in-law ("Black Widow"), and the birth of her youngest child ("Ordinary Day"). --Kathleen C.
