Charlie Hunter Charlie HunterSe flere produkter fra AmazonHunter has made his mark on the guitar world by using an eight-string instrument and simple electronic processing to fake the sound of a Hammond organ. His way of playing chords, melody and bassline simultaneously is some technical feat, rather as was Stanley Jordan's orchestral solo guitar style in the 1980s. There's less flash about Hunter's performances, but one is still bound to wonder what new musical result can be got from the imitation of several instruments by one. The answer in both cases is probably not much, but Hunter nonetheless gives good musical value. The title sounds like a debut, but he's done several other albums on Blue Note, and this follows a similar path, the tunes funky vamps and jazz themes, his tone bubbly and sub-aquatic, his lines suggesting a half-time John Scofield. Tenor Peter Apfelbaum, trombonist Josh Roseman and drummer Leon Parker add extra instrumental colour. -- Mark Gilbert Fragt: Ukendt! |

Radiohead The BendsSe flere produkter fra AmazonAfter the massive success of Pablo Honey--or, more specifically, the single "Creep"--had made them a household name, most had written Radiohead off as one-hit wonders. That they could return with an album as awesome and monumental as The Bends, therefore, must have been particularly unexpected. Not that Pablo Honey is a bad album, but rather, when compared to the epic grandeur of The Bends, it's obvious that the five Oxford-based boys had matured immensely since the release of their debut. "High And Dry", "Just", "Street Spirit", "Fake Plastic Trees": nary a pop song among them, yet it's testament to their greatness that they all were hit singles. And really, it's easy to see why: Thom Yorke's falsetto crying over a wall of acoustic and electric guitars, as lyrics and music blend to create a masterpiece of melancholy beauty. The Bends is one of the most essential albums of the 1990s, and a spectacular indicator of further greatness to come. --Robert Burrow Fragt: Ukendt! |

Destiny's Child 8 Days of ChristmasSe flere produkter fra AmazonI'd never want to visit Destiny's Child's homes for the holidays, if their nonsensically named holiday album 8 Days of Christmas is any indication of what they've got under the tree. Chilly, forced and overdone, this mixed bag of modern classics, tarted-up traditional carols and a trio of tunes penned by Beyoncé Knowles doesn't conjure up a single warm-and-fuzzy image of chestnuts roasting on an open fire or Jack Frost nipping at your nose. Rather, it's just another forum to showcase the band's Gucci bag of vocal gymnastics and crass materialism. The Texas trio takes seasonal classics such as Irving Berlin's "White Christmas", "Silent Night" and "Little Drummer Boy" and embellishes them with its own trills and off-kilter harmonies, overwhelming the songs so that their simple beauty is totally obscured. "On the eighth day of Christmas, my baby gave to me, a pair of Chloe shades and a diamond belly ring," brags Knowles in the title song--which is a take-off on the "12 Days of Christmas"--without ever explaining why they loped off four days. In addition, the band are shamelessly self-indulgent throughout the dozen songs found here, taking untold liberties, such as renaming the "Carol of the Bells", "Opera Bells" and recasting "Silver Bells" into "Platinum Bells", to reflect their multi-platinum status. But the low point of the record is when Destiny's Child hawk their own Hasbro Toy manufactured dolls in the intro of "Platinum Bells": "Ladies remember long ago we asked Santa to give us Christmas Dolls? But this year the dolls are you and me under the tree". Humbug. --Jaan Uhelszki Fragt: Ukendt! |

Patti Smith HorsesSe flere produkter fra AmazonOn her 1975 debut, Smith was full of piss and vinegar, seriously interested in bringing together high art and low three-chord rock & roll. As a result, her free-form poetry meshes with covers of "Gloria" and "Land of a Thousand Dances", and the album centres on two long, highfalutin' pieces, including the three-part suite (warning! warning! art!) "Land". (The CD version appends a messy live take on The Who's "My Generation".) Led by Richard Sohl's piano, the arrangements don't exactly rock, and some of Smith's song-writing gets buried in its stylistic affectations (there's a great song under "Redondo Beach"'s fake reggae). But the point of Horses was Smith's persona of volume, cunning and exile, and it comes through distinctly. --Douglas Wolk Fragt: Ukendt! |

Interpol Turn on the Bright LightsSe flere produkter fra AmazonThe early 80s sub-gothic, post-punk are clearly Interpol's obsession on Turn On the Bright Lights. Though stylishly clad in suits and ties and unmistakably a New York band, their music is a literate, atmospheric, always-moody, sometimes-trashy post-punk often recalling the Psychedelic Furs, particularly with "PDA", "Obstacle 2", "Roland" and "Stella Was a Diver and She Was Always Down". And this is definitely a good thing. While most young bands are still rhyming "make it" with "fake it", it's truly refreshing to hear Interpol's melodramatic tales of tortured and tortuous urban relationships. Like their peers the Strokes, they're a bright band, sophisticated and meticulous enough to build genuinely stirring soundscapes. Turn On the Bright Lights is an absolute must for anyone who missed Echo & The Bunnymen, the Furs or Joy Division the first time round. --Dominic Wills Fragt: Ukendt! |

Spice Girls SpiceworldSe flere produkter fra Amazon"Spice up your life", the Spice Girls advise on the first single from Spiceworld, their second album, which was made quickly to capitalise on the movie of the same name. If that sounds more like an advertising slogan than a call for variety, solidarity, and fun, it's not the only time the disc echoes the language of a carefully planned campaign: The chorus of "Move Over" is built around the phrase "Generation Next", the rallying cry of the their Pepsi advert. And if, in turn, you come to the conclusion that this record isn't nearly as much fun as its predecessor, you're right. Any question about the creative input of Scary, Posh, Baby, Ginger, and Sporty into their own music is moot; like "Candle in the Wind 1997", Spiceworld was made to be bought, not listened to. Sure, they trade vocals this time, leaning less on the Bananarama-style gang approach of their debut, and yeah, the Motown-lite confection "Stop" doesn't exactly hurt the ear, but this disc is ultimately a bigger insult than anything a bunch of diehard anarchists such as Chumbawamba could imagine--without the kick of "Tubthumping". It also ends on a note so jarring as to settle the group firmly in the avant-garde with the fake-lounge "Lady Is a Vamp", which unfortunately praises Jackie O and Marilyn Monroe in the same verse, then ups the ante with a shout-out to Sandy Denny(!) as a Spicy role model. All together now: Uh huh. --Rickey Wright Fragt: Ukendt! |

Coldplay A Rush of Blood to the HeadSe flere produkter fra AmazonOn Coldplay's A Rush of Blood to the Head, the melodic excellence of Parachutes remains, as does the delicate soulfulness of Chris Martin's voice. But now different styles are approached, as the band develop even further beyond their debut album (and the numerous Radiohead comparisons that dogged them at first). "God Put a Smile upon Your Face", for instance, has a thumping voodoo quality, while the hypnotic "A Whisper" has a wild vocal arrangement recalling Jefferson Airplane. Beyond this, each of the 11 tracks--from the literate power ballad "In My Place" to the 60s-style mantra "Daylight"--are given room to breathe, gradually reaching an ecstatic crescendo where Martin and that huge Coldplay piano ride over a pulsing rhythm and orchestrations that are powerful but never overblown. "Give me real, don't give me fake" says Martin in the opening "Politik" and it's an appropriately uncompromising demand, for A Rush of Blood... is without doubt the most heartfelt and emotionally liberated album to top the charts in ages. --Dominic Wills Fragt: Ukendt! |

The Haydn ProjectSe flere produkter fra AmazonTo celebrate its 25th anniversary, the Emerson Quartet has made its first all-Haydn recording featuring seven of the composer's most famous quartets on two CDs. Presented chronologically, the programme is arranged for utmost contrast of tonality, atmosphere and character. The prevailing mood is joyous, as befits the occasion, though three quartets are in minor keys. The opening work, Op.20 No.5, is dark, brooding and achingly beautiful; its inner tension is released in passionate climaxes, its slow movement is serenely pastoral and its finale a double fugue. This is followed by Op.33 No.2, nicknamed "The Joke" for its finale, whose coda is punctuated by several "fake" endings--general pauses of increasing length designed to tempt the audience into premature applause. To make its full effect, this "joke" depends on watching the players sit in frozen silence. Also in minor keys are the dramatic Op.76 No.2, nicknamed "Fifths" for its opening theme, which contains the famous "Witches' Minuet", a fierce two-part canon between the upper and lower instruments; and Op.74 No.3, nicknamed "The Rider" for its galloping finale. Op.64 No.5 is called "The Lark" for its soaring beginning; the finale is a brilliant perpetual-motion marathon. Op.54 No.1 and Op.77 No.1 radiate good cheer and sunshine. The Emersons, whose violinists alternate, play all this with their customary meticulousness, polish and ease; some of the fast movements are surprisingly leisurely and at times one could wish for more inwardness or abandon. A third, bonus disc taken from earlier Emerson recordings contains movements of eight quartets from Mozart to Ives. -- Edith Eisler Fragt: Ukendt! |
