Mike Oldfield Tubular Bells 2003 + Bonus DVDSe flere produkter fra AmazonFor Tubular Bells 2003, the ever-perfectionist Mike Oldfield (unhappy, apparently, at the odd bum note on the indubitably classic original) utilises the latest studio techniques and trickery to re-record his flagship classical/folk/rock instrumental masterwork in its bar-for-bar entirety. It may be true that The Bayeux Tapestry would look pretty good if someone re-embroidered all 230 feet of it on a modern sewing machine, but that's hardly the point. Surely, the original Tubular Bells--16 million sales, reverential status, important historical artefact and so on--has more than enough going for it? Although the production here is fatter and brighter, playing "spot the musical difference" between this and the one that continues to pay for Richard Branson's hot air balloons may require levels of diligence and dedication bordering on pottiness, which in a way is kind of a relief. There are minor distinctions--louder bass guitar, better sounding bagpipes, Sally Oldfield (presumably) joining Mike for a grunt on the always-amusing "Caveman" section and John Cleese playing Master of Ceremonies on "Finale" (saving his best "pining for the fjords" voice for the announcement of the arrival of the "double speed guitar")--but, by and large, the apple cart remains upstanding and no babies are thrown away with the bath water. --Kevin Maidment Fragt: Ukendt! |

Composer Harry Warnow was already legendary (as "Raymond Scott") for his whimsical electronic and big-band novelty musics. With this 1962-63 series, Scott turned his astonishing array of invented and modified keyboards and recording techniques toward pure electronic music with an infant-friendly spin. Intended as "aural toys" for the nursery, Soothing Sounds' deceptively simple "tic-tocs" and unthreatening seesaw melodies play on the calming properties of repetition--much like music boxes, Fisher-Price's mobiles, and the comforting "Again!" video mentality of the Teletubbies. Despite endorsement from the Gesell Institute of Child Development, the records sold poorly. Liars They Threw Us All in a Trench and Stuck a Monument on TopSe flere produkter fra AmazonThey Threw Us All in a Trench and Stuck a Monument on Top, the debut album from New York punk-funk bohemians the Liars, is an excellently scrappy document of the Big Apple as seen from the gutter: a hip-shaking DIY no-wave document that could have been made 20 years ago, but sounds totally modern today. "Can you hear us? Can you hear us?" yelps frontman Angus Andrew on the opening "Grown Men Don't Just Fall in the River Like That", "We've got our finger on the pulse of Americaaaa!" And from thereon in, They Threw Us All in a Trench... throws up questions with a dizzying fervour. Why use two chords when one chord will do? Why not revist the undocumented ruins of post-punk and build new, fantastic compositions--tracks like "Tumbling Walls Buried Me in the Desert With ESG" and "Loose Nuts on the Veladrome"--on the ashes? Why not conclude your album with a thirty-minute closer, the sinister PiL-esque groove of "This Dust Makes That Mud", that takes up over half of the album's total running length? An occasional urge towards atonality may dissuade anyone not on good terms with the back catalogue of Sonic Youth, but the fact remains that the Liars are up there with the best of New York's new-wave. --Louis Pattison Fragt: Ukendt! |

Neil Diamond Home Before DarkSe flere produkter fra AmazonRemarkably Home Before Dark is the first US chart topping album of Neil Diamond's forty year career. It appears to repeat the formula behind 2006's acclaimed 12 Songs--relatively understated arrangements and a subtle Rick Rubin production. But Diamond, though sixty-seven years old and the oldest recipient of a Number One so far, is no Johnny Cash, turning his unique voice to some well chosen contemporary material. Instead Home Before Dark is a collection of new Diamond songs, and though they might not match the boomers in his back catalogue they are hardly stripped back. These are songs designed to fill large venues alongside the showstoppers in Diamond's still energetic live show. "Pretty Amazing Grace" is in the great tradition of Diamond songs that defy their corniness with sheer catchiness, as is "One More Bite of the Apple" while "Don't Go There" features bracing backing vocals and a delightfully dated wobbly guitar hook. The duet with Natalie Maines, "Another Day (That Time Forgot)", would fit comfortably on American country radio while "The Power of Two" sounds like another hit in waiting. In fact this is more a conventional Diamond collection than a Rick Rubin production, dominated by lightly understated country rock arrangements played by a crack team including Smokey Hormel, Heartbreakers Benmont Tench and Mike Campbell and the usually experimental Matt Sweeney. This is a charming and consistently solid set, though Home Before Dark does lack the unexpected intensity that made 12 Songs stand out so. -Â?Steve Jelbert Fragt: Ukendt! |

Lene Marlin Playing My GameSe flere produkter fra AmazonWhen Lene Marlin stepped up onto the podium at the 1999 MTV European Music Awards to collect the award for best Scandinavian artist, anyone outside of the icy hinterlands could have been forgiven for thinking, "But that's not the woman out of the Cardigans..." Five months later and Lene Marlin's single "Sitting Down Here" was a big hit throughout Europe and now everyone knows her name, even if they can't pronounce it (it's "Le-nay", by the way). Her debut album Playing My Game fittingly opens with the hit single, which sets the tone for the rest of the album--deceptively sweet melodies topped with bittersweet lyrics of lost loves and youthful alienation. Musically it is hardly challenging, combining the angst of the likes of Fiona Apple with the gentle harmonious vocals of the Corrs. It does beg the question what young, successful, attractive women like Lene and Fiona have to complain about, but if it leads to pretty, folk-tinged pop like this, who's complaining? -- Helen Marquis Fragt: Ukendt! |

But even if the apple has fallen away from the music tree, Ziggy's voice has the same forceful yearning and brittle timbre as his father's; also like his father, Marley wears his politics on his sleeve (particularly on "Shalom Salaam" and "In the Name of God") without being rudimentary. Eminem Marshall Mathers LP [VINYL]Se flere produkter fra AmazonHis second album finds Eminem struggling to contain the pressures of success. And he's dealing it with it disgracefully. The Detroit rapper's multiple identities are more mixed up than ever, with Marshall Mathers fighting for prominence against his alter egos: Eminem, Slim Shady, Kenneth Kaniff and his public image. Don't be fooled by the album title: apart from the eponymous "Marshall Mathers" (which runs the lyrical gamut from maudlin to maniacal) you won't learn too much about "the real Slim Shady" here. As fiction bleeds into reality, Eminem aggravates the wound to increase the flow. The Dr Dre/Mel-Man productions on this record don't have the slap-happy bounce of those from the Slim Shady LP; all drums and bass, they're ghostly, minimised slabs of roto-funk. Except, of course for the gleefully self-referential single "The Real Slim Shady", for which Dre appropriately cuts in some of the picked-guitar from his own "Forgot About Dre". Eminem's own co-productions with F.B.T. veer from the bounce to the ounce of "Drug Ballad" to the full-metal jacket of "Kim", where you get to find out all the gruesome details of how Eminem's paramour ended up in the back of that trunk (from Slim Shady's "'97 Bonnie and Clyde"). And believe me, it ain't pretty. If anything there's a lesson to be learnt here: money, success, drugs, murderous intent, mental trauma and schizophrenia are all just as American as apple pie. --Chris Campion Fragt: Ukendt! |

On this, the follow-up to Angelou's critically acclaimed 1998 debut Automiracles, their sound has grown and developed, with more experimental textures and clear, poetic songwriting. Lead songwriter/vocalist Holly Lerski writes of love and emotional survival with subtle shifts of mood, from the delicate pop of "Glittering Creatures" (a homage to the big skies and lakes of their home county) to "Bitter Honey", a spicy revenge song about obsession. "Warm winds through the apple trees/Blowing strange fruit to me," croons Lerski, "And I'm drunk again on your sour jam." CD1 opens with what is to many their most memorable moment, the absurd rock classic "Crazy Horses", which is in stark contrast to the following "Love Me For a Reason", the ballad brought to a new generation by Boyzone. The gentle crooning continues for a good few songs until "Hold Her Tight", another rocker with a guitar riff not unlike "Celebration Day" by Led Zeppelin. "One Bad Apple" is a pop soul ditty in a vein of that other pop dynasty, the Jackson 5, with little Donny taking a shot at the high, screechy vocals a la little Michael. Disc 2 features the solo highlights from Donny (swoon), Marie and Little Jimmy. Fans of S Club 8 might well recognise the evergreen "Puppy Love", Donny's signature song and on the subject of child pop stars who can forget Little Jimmy's "Long Haired Lover from Liverpool". However, unlike the Jackson 5, the solo Osmonds were not as great as the sum of their parts, CD2 is alright, but CD1 is unquestionably better. -- Georgina Collins Fragt: Ukendt! |

Both songwriters utilised unsettling time signatures, anxious lyrics and airtight performances from their band mates to create the sound of teenage girls bursting into womanhood. Few, however, possess the edgy passion, blues-drenched soul and whisky-soaked inflections that are Beth Hart's trademarks. Less rough-hewn and more accessible than her 1995 debut, Screamin' For My Supper is nonetheless an emotional and memorable offering from this LA native. Hart's vibe--sort of a Fiona Apple meets Mick Jagger, with a liberal dose of Janis Joplin--somehow manages to be her own, while her thoughtful lyrics have a Southern sensibility that touches the heart and soul.
