But then, you'd feel cocky enough to pick on a Beatle if you'd just recorded these songs. Obviously the singles--"Wonderwall", "Don't Look Back In Anger", "Some Might Say"--rock; but it's a shocker rediscovering just how ace the album tracks are. The minor-chord that the chorus of "Hey Now!" pivots on could liquefy a brick; "Champagne Supernova" is the sound of a band riding the nose-cone of a rock & roll Concorde, and as for "She's Electric"--ah, well. Annie AnniemalSe flere produkter fra AmazonNorwegian singer/songwriter Annie (Anne Lilia Berge Strand) makes her full-length debut with what must surely be the year's sunniest album. Not since the days of The Tom Tom Club, Bananarama, and "Lucky Star"-era Madonna, has dance-pop been this fun, this bouncy, this unabashedly optimistic (1999 single "Greatest Hit" even samples the latter's "Everybody"). So don't say you haven't been warned: Anniemal is a pretension-free zone. With its "Oh no, oh no / You've got it all wrong / You think you're chocolate / But you're chewing gum" refrain, 2004's insanely addictive single "Chewing Gum" is the jewel in this sparkling crown. The R2D2-like bloops and bleeps and Annie's sweet "ah-ah-ahs" and "la-la-las" just make it shine all the brighter. Hippie-disco extravaganza "Come Together," which tops the seven-minute mark, is another standout, while the sentimental "My Best Friend" is, arguably, the only clunker on one of 2005's most notable releases. --Kathleen C. David Kitt Small MomentsSe flere produkter fra AmazonRecorded and mixed in a Dublin bedroom over the 12 months of 1999, Small Moments is nothing if not appropriately named. The debut release of youthful Irish minstrel David Kitt, this is a restrained, understated mini-album of fragile modern folk melodies, backed with the sputter of electronic percussion and synths in time-honoured lo-fi style. This is far from an amateurish effort, though; Kitt's muse is located in the hazy, neo-folky vein of Beth Orton or Kathryn Williams, obsessively well-crafted and cosily complete. He is, however, eager to deal the odd wild card: "Another Love Song" features guest harmonies from his nine-year old brother Robbie, who clearly shares the ol' Kitt vocal chords; and the tender "Days For Two" segues, unexpectedly, into a reading of the Bee Gees' "In The Morning". Still, it's Kitt's own "Headphones" that tells his story best--a day in the life of a bedsit poet, content in beautiful isolation: "Don't try to call/ I can't hear the phone/ I've got my headphones on/ And I'm all alone." --Louis Pattison Fragt: Ukendt! |

Sparks PropagandaSe flere produkter fra AmazonAh, the eternal problem of how to follow up the overnight success. It's often the case that groups change their sound and image to keep up the commercial winning streak once they hit the big time, often at the expense of their original appeal. Sparks, however, are a law unto themselves. Whatever acclaim was brought by Kimono My House appears to have been ignored by the Mael brothers, who instead solidified the style of demented, sinister pop songs that the band pioneered. In this case, Ron Mael's eye for lyrical detail, welded to an off-kilter tune, makes for a unique offering. Who else could write the utterly sincere "Bon Voyage", sung from the viewpoint of the animals that didn't get onto Noah's Ark? Also apparent is an early indication of Sparks' reluctance to be pigeonholed as a guitar band; the opening title track is an acapella offering, while the jazzy flourishes that colour the following album Indiscreet make their appearances on nearly every track. Sure, they still rock out, especially on "At Home, At Work, At Play" and "Something for the Girl with Everything", but the detail beneath the surface shows Sparks' unique gift for the darkly humourous.
