Sparks PropagandaSe flere produkter fra AmazonAh, the eternal problem of how to follow up the overnight success. It's often the case that groups change their sound and image to keep up the commercial winning streak once they hit the big time, often at the expense of their original appeal. Sparks, however, are a law unto themselves. Whatever acclaim was brought by Kimono My House appears to have been ignored by the Mael brothers, who instead solidified the style of demented, sinister pop songs that the band pioneered. In this case, Ron Mael's eye for lyrical detail, welded to an off-kilter tune, makes for a unique offering. Who else could write the utterly sincere "Bon Voyage", sung from the viewpoint of the animals that didn't get onto Noah's Ark? Also apparent is an early indication of Sparks' reluctance to be pigeonholed as a guitar band; the opening title track is an acapella offering, while the jazzy flourishes that colour the following album Indiscreet make their appearances on nearly every track. Sure, they still rock out, especially on "At Home, At Work, At Play" and "Something for the Girl with Everything", but the detail beneath the surface shows Sparks' unique gift for the darkly humourous. Duruflé: Sacred Choral and Organ Works, Vol.1Se flere produkter fra AmazonAh, such pretty music. Duruflé was one of those French mystical types--full of Gregorian chant-inspired melody. His organ music is thoroughly typical of his small but immaculately crafted output. The Scherzo is a real charmer, while the Prelude and fugue pays affectionate tribute to a talented colleague. His Requiem became so popular that the composer arranged it for every instrumental combination except perhaps kazoo orchestra. This version is the one featuring a big solo organ part (with chamber orchestra), and it is well performed and recorded. Piquemal's vocal ensemble isn't the last word in polish, but they sing with enthusiasm and fans of the composer need not hesitate. -- David Hurwitz Fragt: Ukendt! |

Original Soundtrack Godzilla - the AlbumSe flere produkter fra AmazonHere's a perfect end result example of the Hollywood bastardisation of the movie soundtrack; a great album that has practically nothing to do with the film it promotes. "Heroes" from The Wallflowers is a red herring as a gentle introduction before the notorious collaboration between Jimmy Page and Puff Daddy with the hard rock of "Come With Me". The latter is far better preparation for the thumping jumping styles of Rage Against the Machine ("No Shelter"), Fuel ("Walk The Sky"), Fuzzbubble ("Out There"), and Green Day ("Brain Stew"). Balladic counterpoint comes from: Ben Folds Five ("Air"), Michael Penn ("Macy Day Parade"), and Foo Fighters ("A320"). The movie featured a start-to-finish orchestral score from David ( Independence Day) Arnold, and--gee whiz!--they managed to squeeze four minutes onto the end here. Nada Surf Let GoSe flere produkter fra AmazonPrior to Let Go, Nada Surf's most notable achievement was "Popular"--their 1996 hit single and MTV staple that cast a cynical eye over dysfunctional US high school relationships to the sound of crunchy, Pixies-esque college rock. But with this, their fourth album, they're a world away from the sweaty dorm-rooms that spawned them. Like their peers Weezer, Nada Surf have matured without all the negative aspects that might imply: flitting between driving power-pop, blue-skies post-grunge and acoustic rock balladry, Let Go is an enchanting and subtle album that consigns the band's curmudgeonly, satirical edge to the dumpster. It's often beautifully simple: the curious "Blonde on Blonde" finds frontman Matthew Caws singing of listening to Bob Dylan on his headphones as he strolls in the rain, while "Happy Kid" is a wide-eyed rollercoaster ride that boasts not a single cynical bone in its rosy, plump frame. Add this to the fact that there's some wry-but-muscular rock songs here that could take Rivers Cuomo on at his own game (see the fluorescent punk-pop rush of "The Way You Wear Your Head") and it suddenly becomes clear that Nada Surf are far more than "Popular"--they're a smart, alluring, attractive 21st century rock band that are so over high school it hurts. --Louis Pattison Fragt: Ukendt! |

Susumu Yokota Sound of SkySe flere produkter fra AmazonWhile veteran Japanese producer Susumu Yokota is probably best known for his frequent and impressively consistent Eno-style ambient albums, Sound of Sky finds him grooving on a house tip in the spirit of earlier works such as 2000's excellent Will. That ambient edge is clearly never far from Yokota's mind, though: opening with the gentle crash of distant waves on "Sea Blue", this is the sort of album that preaches understatement as a virtue. Much of Sound of Sky is clearly meant for the headphones--check the calm breakbeat rattle of "Nothing Time", shot through with Krautrock-style organ drones and slow-rolling bass lines, or the brief, super-phased interlude of "Wind Wave". There are some more-straightforward club tracks, though--"Sky Blue" wouldn't sound out of place at the lighter end of a deep house set, and "Right To Be Free" marries a robust Cologne kick to Yokota's light touch. If Sound of Sky falters in any way, it's because on some of the lighter occasions, it tarries dangerously near to Kenny G-style jazz overindulgence. Various Artists Dfa Compilation Vol.2Se flere produkter fra AmazonDFA (Death From Above) is American ex-punk musician James Murphy and ex-Mo Wax and UNKLE producer/composer Tim Goldsworthy. DFA compilation #2 is the latest collection of punk-edged funk from the DFA label. And very good it is too - while, as a label sampler, this is a nice selection of tunes by a variety of different people, there's a clear thread that runs throughout the two unmixed discs of what can only be described as dance music with brains. But don't let that put you off - we're not talking coffee-table stuff here. Just that this works as well on headphones as it does on the dancefloor. Highlights include the tremendous opener "Casual Friday" by Black Leotard Front (15 minutes of very sleek, minimalist, arty funk), the melodic synthy breakbeat of The Juan Maclean (ex-Six Finger Satellite)'s "Less Than Human", punk-funk legends Liquid Liquid's percussion free-for-all, "Bellhead", and the slightly disturbing "Alabama Sunshine" by music-press darlings The Rapture. Handel: AlcinaSe flere produkter fra AmazonHere it is: one of the year's most hotly anticipated opera recordings, made during an acclaimed live production in June 1999 at the Paris Opera, which more than lives up to the promise. Whether Handelian opera is still a novelty or you're already a rabid convert, this emotionally resonant, crisply played, superbly cast interpretation under William Christie and Les Arts Florissants is likely to shake up some of your ideas about the composer. On the surface, Alcina's Ariosto-based story about a sorceress whose spell is finally broken seems like the typically absurd fare of baroque opera. But as the story unfolds in an incredible succession of some 28 arias, it's clear that these performers are reaching for deeper profundities present in Handel's music. Renée Fleming makes Alcina's huge Act II aria "Ah! mio cor" a central epiphany and turning point of the opera. It defies belief that this is Susan Graham's first baroque opera, so rich is her variety of invention and deep her musicality as Ruggiero, the one to break free of Alcina's spell, while the spun-silk soprano of Nathalie Dessay adds yet another colour to the multitude of female voices that dominate here. -- Thomas May Fragt: Ukendt! |

Fingathing And the Big Red Nebula BandSe flere produkter fra AmazonThe rise of Peter Parker and Sneaky (aka Fingathing) has been slow-burning, propagated principally via a series of strategically placed live shows acclaimed for being forward-thinking, funky and not a little frenetic. Grand Central, Fingathing's third album, is almost certainly going to be a breakthrough project. Its conceptual premise is intriguing: following their faked deaths, they have been catapulted into space in metal coffins and have managed to record with a bunch of cosmic beings called The Big Red Nebula Band. "Big Bang", "Cluster Buster", "Music to Watch Aliens By", "Bolus" and "Walk in Space" are all characterised by growling, mercurial basslines, mechanical, electro-edged riddims, cosmic b-boyism and a range of influences from rock, Sun-Ra afro-jazz and classical.
