For too long, every Gorky's album was heralded by an expectant British press as the one that would finally break this fresh-faced band of proto-mediaeval avant-garde prog-folk outsiders to a mainstream audience. Not to be, though-- Spanish Dance Troupe is a come-back album from the wilderness, after Gorky's were unceremoniously dumped by their major label paymasters Mercury. Spanish Dance Troupe is yet another wonderful album, of course--we'd hardly expect anything other from Gorky's. Safe to say, though, that the Top 40 won't be unduly troubled by "Poodle Rockin'", which sounds like Madness being kidnapped by a truckload of Cossacks. Nor, for that matter, should radio DJs be unduly tempted to spin tracks like the Dadaist pantomime of "Hair Like Monkey, Teeth Like Dog". But that's the great thing about Gorky's Zygotic Mynci--they're a living, breathing alternative to, well, pretty much everything, actually. --Louis Pattison

"If we get it wrong, they'll feed us to the sharks" is just one of a clutch of siege-mentality lyrics from Silence Is Easy, Starsailor's second album and an item eagerly awaited by cursing press sceptics. For all the soul-baring candidness--"You don't even know me, so why do you hate me?" avers the title track--doubters may still not be entirely inclined to feel sympathetic, especially as the band's fretful (and some say conservative) rock-soul template has barely altered since their debut, and because singer James Walsh would still have us believe he is a walking hair shirt of torment. Sin, spiritual blindness, God-given grace, the biophysical symptoms of emotional turbulence and stuff like "My wandering soul found solace at last" all figure prominently in Walsh's lyrics, as if Starsailor are his personal sacrament of penance, his confession booth through which he must seek absolution. But what about the tunes? The felicitous numbers mark a break from the past and consolidate on Starsailor's previous successes. "Bring Me Love" is all unfettered gaiety; not only is it delirious with strings of the pizzicato and soaring variety, it's also enlivened with happy chatter about ringing bells, moons and meadows and is only a couple of skipping milkmaids short of passing off as an old English folk song about courtship. Oddly, it really does sound like Echo and the Bunnymen on Prozac. "Four to the Floor", meanwhile, is the most celebratory thing Starsailor have ever put their name to. With its funky groove, Louis Clark-style disco string arrangements, bongos and lashings of mirror-ball cheese it even has the audacity to come out with a line as methodical as "I was sure she would be my girl" and get away with it. As has been highly publicised, reclusive production genius Phil Spector adds polish to two songs, while John Leckie and Danton Suppie oversee duties on the rest. While it seems Starsailor's development is going to be more incremental than hoped, Silence Is Easy is steady progress, a solid album that finds them

Wanted will make the ideal gift for any admirer of Cliff's "Millennium Prayer". Like the medley of the Lord's Prayer and "Auld Lang Syne" in the aforementioned tune, this collection is packed with covers of Cliff's favourite compositions. The karaoke machine orchestrations, and Bontempi keyboard-style sequences, premiered on Christmas 1999's number one single, get plenty of exposure here too. Kicking off with a rather similar, but unadventurous version of "Somewhere over the Rainbow", performed over an arrangement of "What a Wonderful World" the tone and style of almost the whole album is established by this multi-layer opener. Tracks such as "And I Love Her" and "Do You Wonder" prove that at times Cliff can excel if he puts his mind and mouth in gear. His reinterpretation though of Elvis's "All Shook Up" complete with lyrical quotes from Richard's 1976 smash "She's a Devil Woman" and occasional use of the vocoder, is rather "naff" to say the least. I also remember Roland Rat doing a more competent cover of another Presley classic featured--"Love Me Tender". As you would expect musical experimentation isn't a priority on Wanted but perhaps it's an honest recognition that however hard he tries, even recording a garage / r 'n' b tune, or shaving all his hair off--Cliff will never be cool. Why should he care anyway? Wanted will delight those already converted to the magic (and unhip-ness) of Cliff. -- John Galilee

Simon Mayor is a mandolin virtuoso, indeed it's tempting to describe him as the mandolin virtuoso, as the field isn't exactly packed with contenders. Ricky Skaggs comes to mind as his only serious rival for the title but Mayor, unlike the American Bluegrass wizard, is truly an all-rounder who possesses not only a formidable technique but a grasp of styles that range far beyond the folky tunes that form the cornerstone of contemporary mandolin repertoire. This album is basically an opportunity for Mayor to show off in a variety of settings: best of all are his own suites of tunes, in which he plays jigs and reels in finger-contorting arrangements and at hair-raising speed. Annoyingly, he also accompanies himself extremely well on guitar, mandola, mandocello and even, on occasion, fiddle and whistle. But the classics hold no terrors for Mayor, either, and he dashes away with carefree abandon at Vivaldi's famous mandolin concerto, as well as some bits of Bach, Berlioz and Handel. In the end this may be an album strictly for mandolin connoisseurs, but for every one of those Mayor's music is a constant source of inspiration. He's made several albums since, with The Second Mandolin Album being equally eclectic and equally delightful. -- Mark Walker

Having left Pink Floyd in 1968 after a daily LSD habit had taken its toll, Syd Barrett's first solo album finally appeared two years later with ex-Floyd sidekicks Dave Gilmour and Rick Wright riding shotgun with him in the studio. The Madcap Laughs is a brilliant but brittle album, with every strum of the electric guitar seeming to take its toll on Barrett's increasingly frayed nerve strings. On songs like "Love You", his state of mind is well concealed beneath the sort of jolly ice cream van jangle-pop Blur would later indulge in. On "Dark Globe", however, the strain is palpable: "Please land a hand ... won't you miss me? Wouldn't you miss me at all?" he pleas, ominously. Best tracks are "Octopus" with all the controlled mania of early Floyd and "Golden Hair", a still moment of musical rapture whose lyric is taken from a James Joyce poem. -- David Stubbs

Oh, Inverted World, the sun-baked debut album from Albuquerque indie quartet The Shins, signposts a fascinating change of direction for Sub Pop Records. Back in the early 90s, bands like Nirvana and Mudhoney made the name synonymous with the dark, angst-ridden grunge sound. Now, it would seem, Sub Pop wears a flower in its hair. The florid harmonies and bucolic acoustics of "Caring Is Creepy" and "Know Your Onion" bring to mind a vision of the verdant hills and gleaming bays of California that's remained largely dormant since The Beach Boys hung up their surfboards: a sound that's undeniably nostalgic, but so vividly realised and perfectly recorded it seems almost churlish to mention it. It's not all simple sunshine pop, either: the delicate, melancholy spaghetti western strum of "New Slang" recalls the barren desertscapes of Ennio Morricone, while the shadowy, monastic vocals and trilling cellos of "Your Algebra" provide a chilling two minutes of commendably dark psychedelia. Sure, it might have one foot in the past but Oh, Inverted World sounds like a fresh start for Sub Pop--one that drowns out the muddy roar of grunge with the hum of good vibrations. -- Louis Pattison

In the days when boy bands played their own instruments, Spandau Ballet--a bunch of pretty boys from north London with kilts, shoulder pads, bad 1980s hair, eyeliner and unmistakable good looks--caused quite a stir and soon had both major record labels and teenage girls monitoring their every move. Major-league players among the New Romantic movement, the five piece lived the high life and churned out hit after hit between 1980 and 1986. This compilation features pretty much all of their offerings ("Gold", "True", "Lifeline", "Highly Strung")--some more memorable than others. Gold's sleeve notes boldly proclaim "...this is where it all began. Club culture, endless nocturnal adventures, white boys high on soul and funk-making electric dance music which moves the city." It's hard to imagine music like this doing that now--on the cover they look like a bunch of old guys in polo necks--but it was the 80s. --Ronita Dutta

Julio Iglesias--he of the endearing Latin accent, endless-summer suntan, and stunning charisma--could make "Mary Had a Little Lamb" sound sexy, so it's no surprise that the selections here smoulder with the approximate heat of high noon in his native Madrid. What may be surprising to longtime listeners, though, is the range of songs he chose to cover. While "It's Impossible," the Perry Como hit with the famously pretty-sad melody, comes across an obvious choice and benefits from a swooning yet sure-footed performance, two Foreigner classics, "I Want to Know What Love Is" and "Waiting for a Girl Like You," seem somehow beneath our debonair ladykiller. Still, smothered by his signature passion, they play like entirely new songs--less earnest and searching, more insistent and sweet. Such is the case with Richard Marx's "Right Here Waiting" and, to some extent, the Cars' "Drive"; instead of sounding like lite-FM retreads, they become heated extensions of his Julio-ness. Older hits--"This Guy's in Love with You," "The Most Beautiful Girl"--benefit from a certain effortlessness; these are numbers pre-dipped in the knee-weakening romance Julio specializes in. Overall, it's a modern/classic commingling that proves what millions of women worldwide have suspected for decades: where practitioners of pulse-quickening, fantasy-fueling vocals are concerned, there is no equal. --Tammy La Gorce

Krystian Zimerman's survey of one of the most towering monuments in all piano literature simply exudes stylish authority. There is a tremendous sense of power in reserve here--try "Le vent dans la plaine" from Book 1, with its fearsome dynamic range and rolling surges of sumptuous tone--yet at the same time this distinguished Polish virtuoso doesn't miss out on the delicate purity of the evergreen "La fille aux cheveux de lin" ("The Girl with the flaxen hair"). It's conceivable that some collectors might even baulk a little at a display of such relentless, high-octane intensity; in which case they might care to try either the underrated Martino Tirimo on Carlton Classics or the classic mono set from Walter Gieseking on EMI Références (both on one disc and retailing at mid-price). Patrick Wolf The Magic Position

Standing at 6 feet 4" tall with a shock of bright red hair, 23 year old Patrick Wolf is something of a statement even before he opens his mouth. His two albums to date - 2003's Lycanthropy and 2005's Wind in the Wires - have showed him to be more than a pretty face, however, with songs that strike an attractive balance between the imaginative and the indulgent. His third album, The Magic Position, is undoubtedly Wolf's 'pop' moment. The rollicking romp of "Get Lost", the upbeat "Accident and Emergency," and the celebratory title track all underline new levels of accessibility and - dare we say it - optimism. There are hints of the old Wolf too of course, especially in the eclectic choice of instrumentation and the off-kilter song arrangements; for every pop-perfect track there's a slice of raw darkness ("Bluebell,") casual introspection ("Augustine") or sidereal rock-tronica ("The Stars"). Less a dramatic re-invention than a sideways turn into the world of adult emotions and mainstream accessibility, The Magic Position is nonetheless Patrick Wolf's most accomplished work to date. --Paul Sullivan

Times might have changed, now--with the advent of new-metal acts like Korn--but throughout the 1980s, a damning generalisation held true: English heavy metal rocked, while the American variant--with a few notable exceptions--sucked. The difference went beyond aesthetics--the Yanks' avowed penchant for big hair and eyeliner--though that was certainly part of it: British metal was essentially working man's food, loosely descended from biker-meets and Northern pubs; whereas, in the States, it was an outgrowth of stadium-rock, which traditionally subordinated substance to spectacle. Plug-ugly, cartoonishly morbid, Iron Maiden were typical of the local effort: emphasising a driving, no-nonsense approach to the music. And it worked: among metal aficionados, this album ranks as one of the defining moments of the entire genre. Of the eight songs here--including Maiden classics like "Run To The Hills" and the title track--only "Gangland" falls flat, though it's immediately overshadowed by "Hallowed Be Thy Name," acknowledged by many as this band's apotheosis. --Andrew McGuire

What do you mean you don't own it? The Sex Pistols were the most important band of the 1970s, if not the whole rock era, and Kiss This is a priceless compilation of every essential recording the band ever made. Formed in 1975, the Pistols almost immediately anachronised all that they surveyed. They beefed up the sound of the New York Dolls and drenched the resultant sonic stew in lashings of situationist rhetoric. They expectorated themselves into the headlines with an antagonistic blend of profanity, razored hair and sharp sartorial comments and single-handedly wrote the entire punk rock rulebook, before gleefully ripping it to shreds and throwing the remaining shards to an entire generation of spike-topped acolytes. Hear Johnny Rotten sneer through "Anarchy In The UK", Steve Jones redefine metal with "Holidays In The Sun", and Sid Vicious annihilate "My Way". Once upon a time, you couldn't turn on MTV without seeing Motley Crue videos in heavy rotation. For those still-loyal fans, this compilation brings back the good old days. From the band's 1982 debut, Too Fast for Love, to 2000's New Tattoo, these 21 videos hit on every phase of the Crue's career: they began as a Kiss wannabe, became huge arena-rockers, then stumbled through new singers and drummers before returning to the original lineup. No real fan will go wrong with this hit list, including much time-capsule material: "Girls Girls Girls", "Dr. Feelgood", and "Home Sweet Home" contain big hair, makeup, tight pants--and that's just the band. Bonuses include six "alternate" videos, including the X-rated version of "Girls" (showing barely more than Janet Jackson at the Super Bowl); 50 minutes of bassist Nikki Sixx and drummer Tommy Lee discussing making the clips; and Easter eggs with more hidden videos. The sound, nominally mixed in 5.1 Dolby Surround, is actually quite tame for such hard-hitting music. --Kevin Filipski

For six guys from Melbourne, Australia, to travel half the world to record their second record indicates titanic success for their first. And that's what led the jazzed-up, funked-out popsters Cat Empire to a studio in Havana, Cuba, to follow up that million-selling debut. Here, the band takes its Latin leanings a step farther, creating room for what is billed as the Empire Horns--trombone, trumpet, and sax--in its driving, thriving beat. Lead vocalist Felix Riebl's witty intellect and dripping Aussie twang are the Cat's most distinguishing merits (see the Bob Marley love-fest of a title track and the first line of the offbeat "Sly": "If frizzy hair was a metaphor for festival time/Then this woman is a goddess of that festival shrine"). Yet compatriot Harry James Angus demands equal billing here, with contributions like the ska rave "Saltwater," the punkish memoir "The Car Song," and "Protons, Neutrons, Electrons"--an uproarious showtune of a song complete with delightful piano break and "zip-a-dee-doo" chorus. Still, co-stars aside, this is a complementary sextet that's seemingly comfortable with nearly any style of music--and willing to circle the globe to prove it. --Scott Holter

Maybe it was that thigh-splitting encounter with a belligerent bull, but whatever put him there, Lyle Lovett is in a nostalgic mood on My Baby Don't Tolerate, his first studio album of all new and original songs since the country-minded The Road to Ensenada in 1996. This is a mixed blessing--several songs sound like retreads from Lovett's earlier efforts, even as a listener welcomes the reprised, syncopated, hep-cat, Louis-Jordan-meets-Sister-Rosetta-Tharpe signatures that help define his quirky style. While a key tune, "In My Own Mind", turns around a family man who seeks solace from a busy household, drawing restorative power from nature ("no rain, just the sunshine"), the album finds itself when Lovett begins revisiting dark places in his mind. Forget "Cute as a Bug", a by-now formulaic song of lust, and get right to the bleak antagonist who narrates the confused loss of the elegantly jazzy "You Were Always There", the snaky blues of the title song, the pointy-toed send-up of bygone Music City hillbillies ("Nashville") and the sly portrayal of the bribes of luckless blacks ("Election Day") in the old-time south. As the infectious, if repetitious gospel numbers prove, the man with "Eraserhead" hair isn't breaking any new ground. But he still fuses country, blues, jazz, folk, big band and pop like no-one else on the planet. --Alanna Nash

Not content with pillaging the past for inspiration, on Lick Your Ticket, Chikinki have taken the ambitious step of plugging into the mains and trying to blast themselves into the future. In many ways, this Bristol quintet resembles your everyday Brit indie band--tousled of hair and vintage of t-shirt--but like Cooper Temple Clause or late Primal Scream, Chikinki are all about synthesis. Drum kits are replaced by sensor pads and skittering electronica loops, guitars are run through code-crunching banks of effects, and the meat of the band's sound is provided by two duelling keyboard players, Boris Exton and Trevor Wensley. Only the presence of vocalist Rupert Browne tethers the band down into conventional rock territory: his voice bounds between a stargazing croon ("Drink") or a Mick Jagger yelp ("To Sacrifice a Child", "Ether Radio"), depending on whether his band are luxuriating in warm keyboard textures or hurtling along at a rate of electro-rock knots. Chikinki's ingenuity is commendable, but if Lick Your Ticket has an Achilles' Heel, it's a lack of memorable songs to keep you coming back. Still, while it's on it's a blast, and maybe that's what really matters. --Louis Pattison

Nobody ever accused Mr. Bungle of being suckers for a good melody. The syncopated blasts of cartoonish noise that fill 1991's Mr. Bungle and 1995's Disco Volante are one part speed metal and one part Speedy Gonzalez. Initially, the band served as a more aggressive outlet for singer Mike Patton, widely known for his work in Faith No More. But with Faith No More no more, Patton and Mr. Bungle decided to sweeten the Bungle batter with a little songcraft. California boasts harmonies (yes, harmonies!) that would make the Brothers Wilson proud. Opening with a chorus of seagulls and crashing waves that gives way to slide guitar, strings, and Patton singing (not screaming), the poppy yet symphonic "Sweet Charity" announces that this is not your bike messenger's Mr. Bungle album. Songs like the easy strummin' "Retrovertigo", the sultry Scott Walker-esque "Pink Cigarette", and the orchestral "Vanity Fair" make California 1999's golden-hair surprise. --Bill Crandall

Indie-folk singer Chan Marshall has a reputation for onstage unpredictability, but some erratic (read: often drunken) live performances won't have prepared you for the full-bodied beast that is The Greatest. Recorded with the help of a few Memphis musicians, including Al Green co-writer Mabon "Teenie" Hodges, his brother Leroy "Flick" Hodges, and present Booker T And The MGs drummer Steve Potts, this is a gentle homage to `70s soul that Chan carries with a sleepy-eyed charm. Element of pastiche or not, though, there's a vitality here that's absent from many of her earlier recordings: "Living Proof" simmers with a just-under-the-surface raunch, Chan cooing "It's not your face/Or the colour of your hair/Or the sound of your voice, my dearÂ?" over the simmering organ, while even the restrained "Where Is My Love" boasts a mini-orchestra of sweeping violin and elegiac, wandering piano. Most importantly, The Greatest doesn't suffer from the rather troublesome sense of genre tourism you get when, say, Will Oldham hooks up with a troupe of Nashville old-hands - perhaps because it's executed so convincingly, or perhaps simply because Chan Marshall's voice could melt your heart under any context-- Louis Pattison

Meteora, Linkin Park's second studio effort (not counting the 2002 remix album Reanimation), overflows with glossy production values and Big Rock oomph, fully embracing the pop instincts of their Hybrid Theory debut. For many, Theory sounded inexcusably corporate, from its too-timely rap-rock sound to the long list of product endorsements included in the sleeve notes. Meteora will only amplify those complaints, but this album is actually truer to the band's nature. It's still impossible not to hear strains of Limp Bizkit, Korn, Rage Against the Machine and the like. None of those acts, however, would try something as blatantly anthemic as "Easier to Run", which would sound fine to a Def Leppard fan, or as borderline danceable as "Breaking the Habit" and "Session". Linkin Park are what Trent Reznor was always afraid of becoming, but if you ever wished he would drop the pretences and just make a hair-metal record, you'll find Meteora to your liking. -- Matthew Cooke
