Plaid Parts In The PostSe flere produkter fra AmazonParts in The Post shows again Ed Handley and Andy Turner for the great producers they are. Last time was on their retrospective Trainer, this time though its Plaid the remixers who are under investigation. Spanning some nine years or so, this aptly titled two-part collection, takes a typically versatile journey over all kinds of electronic terrain, retaining a balance all the while between the known and not so known. Hence, tucked away between remixes dispatched for the likes of Bjork, Nicolette, Unkle and Herbert there's plenty of other weighty reworks and rarities to whet the appetite. Take the heavy electronic textures and percussive afro-rhythms of Dropshadow's "Disease Folotienda", the intricate Drum & Bass of Sieg Uber Die Sonne's "You'll Never Come Back", the rough Detroit electro of Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five's "Scorpio" or indeed the Latin tinged dancefloor manoeuvres of Koolaking's "One Latin". All of which go some way explaining why Plaid are considered to be one of the most influential and innovative production units of the last 15 years. -- Found Sounds Fragt: Ukendt! |

Soundtrack American GraffitiSe flere produkter fra AmazonFor those of us who grew up in the '70s, this drive-in compilation of '50s and '60s rock and doo-wop, complete with Wolfman Jack introductions, was our introduction to this music. There are 41 jukebox hits here, and every one of them is a classic of its time (although two tracks--"At the Hop" and "She's so Fine" are covers by the revival band Flash Cadillac & the Continental Kids). In his 1973 movie, director George Lucas used the music (and the presence of mysterious deejay Wolfman) as the AM-radio soundtrack to one night in suburban California, 1962. The idea was to capture and sustain an end-of-summer, end-of-innocence mood that's in the air throughout the picture-- not as a shortcut to establishing a period (as in Robert Zemeckis' Forrest Gump). There's an awful lot of spontaneous energy in these tunes--from Chuck Berry and Buddy Holly, to the Platters and the Clovers and the Del-Vikings, to the Crests and the Beach Boys--and also just a hint of melancholy that goes down very nicely with a burger, shake, and fries. --Jim Emerson Fragt: Ukendt! |

Lenny Kravitz BaptismSe flere produkter fra AmazonOn Baptism, his seventh album, Lenny Kravitz writes, arranges, performs and produces every track. The trouble with working alone is that there's little quality control; some of the songs here really could have benefited from a bit of that. Not to say that Baptism is a complete dud of an album, indeed, the worst thing about it is its awful cover. "California" has a catchy, power pop bounce thats actually reminiscent of Fountains of Wayne, with its fuzzy guitars and handclaps, as well as its un-Kravitz-like short running time (just over two-and-a-half minutes). But then "Sistamamalover" veers deep into Prince territory, with a groove that's too contrived, too dull and too long. And there's some of the self-indulgence of the satisfied, middle-aged rocker apparent on "Minister of Rock & Roll" and "I Don't Want to Be a Star" (it's easy to sing about wanting only "a Chevy and an old guitar" when you're living in a massive mansion). The best tracks are the most straightforward, fun ones: the aforementioned "California", the ZZ Top-inspired "Where Are We Runnin'?" and the Stones-sounding "Flash". Kravitz should loosen up more and leave the angst to the teenagers. --Robert Burrow Fragt: Ukendt! |

Bill Wyman Anyway the Wind BlowsSe flere produkter fra AmazonThe Stone Alone didn't cut all ties with his famous friends when he took a hike from the Rolling Stones. Indeed, Anyway the Wind Blows's star-studded cast includes fellow Stones alumni Mick Taylor, Eric Clapton, Albert Lee and Chris Rea. And those are just the guitarists! The big names are along to bring some flash to Wyman's apparently fluid regular crew, which includes Georgie Fame, Beverley Skeete, and Geoff Grange on vocals. The lot of 'em tackle a handful of Wyman originals and an informed collection of blues-based covers, including tunes from Willie Dixon, Nellie Lutchor, and J.J. Cale. The result is an expertly played collection with the feel of a jam session at an upscale pub. --Steven Stolder Fragt: Ukendt! |

Scorpions Blackout: RemasteredSe flere produkter fra AmazonGerman heavy metal marauders Scorpions recorded seven studio records before breaking in to the U.S. market in 1982 with Blackout. The album became the group's first platinum disc in the U.S., and the dynamic single "No One Like You" became a staple of album rock radio. While the Scorpions had created powerful anthems and epic rockers in the past, Blackout mixed the ingredients just right. The title track was an endorphin rush of fast-riffing guitars and electrified, high-pitched vocals that culminated with the sound of shattering glass. "Can't Live Without You" was a powerful melange of flash, firepower, and pure melody, and the slow, surging "China White" sounded like a psychedelic interpretation of Led Zeppelin's "Kashmir." After years of ignored visas, Scorpions had finally arrived in America. --Jon Wiederhorn Fragt: Ukendt! |

Tommy Castro Live at the FillmoreSe flere produkter fra AmazonTommy Castro is the kind of guy who makes you think, "hard-workin' man." There's no frills or flash on Live at the Fillmore, but one gets the sense that Castro could do that stuff if he wanted to--he just has the good taste to refrain. That's all right; as it is, Castro and his band are so hot, you can practically hear the music sweat. Judging by the song titles, which include "Lucky in Love," "Can't Keep a Good Man Down," and "Sex Machine," one might get the impression that Castro's got only one thing on his mind, but few musicians can approach the same topic in such a myriad of ways. Besides, Live at the Fillmore also includes a stunning version of the soul-blues ballad "Just a Man," which shows that Castro is as capable of tenderness as he is of full-throttle blues rock. Wholly satisfying. -- Genevieve Williams Fragt: Ukendt! |

Beck Midnite VulturesSe flere produkter fra AmazonBeck Hansen's sixth album again demonstrates his unparalleled ability to mix and match genres without overwhelming his essential style. Midnite Vultures is his peculiar tribute to the pre-hip hop American urban music of the Eighties, not a million miles from the peaks of that other wilful eccentric, Prince. "Sexxlaws" is a catchy melange including horns and down-home banjo picking, the inexplicable "Nicotine And Gravy" harks back to George Clinton's early P-funk, while the superlative "Milk And Honey" steals knowingly from Grandmaster Flash's "The Message", alongside electro beats and a huge rock chorus. Throw in pretty country ("Beautiful Way"), nasal G-funk ("Hollywood Freaks"), Tom Waits-style dissonance ("Out of Kontrol", where he asks "Did you ever let a cowboy sit on your lap?") and the relentless funk of "Mixed Business" and you have nothing less than another eclectic masterpiece. --Steve Jelbert Fragt: Ukendt! |

Cat Power JukeboxSe flere produkter fra AmazonJukebox is a sure sign that the Cat Power we once knew--the reluctant performer, too shy to get onstage without a bellyful of whiskey--is dead and buried. Best understood as a sort of mix of two previous albums, 2006's The Greatest--a real coming of age record, lush and powerful, recorded with some of the greats of Memphis soul--and 2000's sparse set of reinterpretations The Covers Record, Jukebox finds an assured, husky-voiced Chan paying tribute to some of the songs that inspired her, backed by her new ensemble, the Dirty Delta Blues band. This is by no means a predictable set, however: the opening "New York, New York" is reinterpreted as a sultry, smouldering blues number, fulsome in instrumentation but stark in its lack of show; while James Brown's broiling Live at the Apollo cut "Lost Someone" is pared back into a swaying lover's exhortation led along on jazzy drums. The picks veer towards the classic rock end of the spectrum--Dylan, Janis Joplin, Hank Williams, Joni Mitchell--but there seems little urge here to gain some novelty laughs from a sudden flash of recognition. Rather, Marshall seems to dig right into the heart of the lyrics, looking for aching hearts and emotional epiphanies. It's worth a dime or two of anyone's money. --Louis Pattison Fragt: Ukendt! |

Finley Quaye VanguardSe flere produkter fra AmazonThe urban dub-reggae and super sunny disposition of his debut album, Maverick A Strike--which spawned five singles, including the ultra chilled "Even After All" and his calling card "Sunday Shining" and won him Best Male Solo Artist at the 1998 Brits--made Finley Quaye a house hold name. Due predominately to the fact that Maverick was the perfect summer soundtrack, Finley's success also owes a part debt to the fact that he, his voice and his sound were, at the time, unique. Two years on and very little has changed. Finley still has no competition when it comes to spirit lifting dubpop and his new album has just as many effortlessly cool tunes as its predecessor. Most importantly, Finley still knows how to take the rootsiest grooves and organic beats and turn them into instantly memorable pop tunes. Be it single "Spiritualized", with that other classic Quaye trait, wacky lyrics; "Paint the wall/fix the plugs/gonna fill this room with Persian rugs" and a rock powered guitar groove or the Desmond Decker reggae sway of "Burning", everything on Vanguard is topped with a contagious melody. Not a revelation, then, but a reassurance that Maverick A Strike was no flash in the pan. If anything, Vanguard is just that little bit sunnier. --Dan Gennoe Fragt: Ukendt! |

Explorers Club Age of ImpactSe flere produkter fra AmazonA conscious attempt to invoke the spirit of classic Yes and Genesis, this project from Magellan's Trent Gardner is most successful when approximating the more manageable sound of progressive rock spin-offs such as Flash (on the 16-minute "Fate Speaks") and UK (on the mere nine-minute "Fading Fast"). Former UK drummer Terry Bozzio and bassist Billy Sheehan navigate the requisite time changes with genuine intensity, while guests such as Yes's Steve Howe and members of Dream Theater play like their capes are on fire. And, lest the riffing get too repetitive, a small army of lead vocalists are on hand to keep the fusion quotient in check. Not quite something for everyone, but quite possibly everything for someone. --Bill E. Grenier Fragt: Ukendt! |

Richie Hawtin Decks Efx and 909Se flere produkter fra AmazonEx-Plastikman techno artist Richie Hawtin's latest release continues his predilection for stripped-down beats and less-is-more aesthetics, slamming down the needle on a record of merciless mixes and remixes. It's quite a workout, with relief coming only in the form of occasional, slightly quieter thumps. Hawtin works with slices of his own material, along with the ruthless concoctions of Jeff Mills and a selection of other DJs from Detroit's influential techno community. Other eclectic influences make their way onto his turntables, the most obvious being a flash of industrial rock courtesy of Nitzer Ebb. Most of it gets swallowed up in Hawtin's metronomelike devotion to rote bpms and hard, minimalist stylings. Still, when it's done with this level of driving force, the sheer momentum is enough to force your limbs into involuntarily movement. From the opening pulse of Ratio's "Early Blow," Hawtin extrapolates on a short beat structure with perfectly rhythmic precision, growing and building through a series of melodyless phases. The album peaks with the Nitzer Ebb break, leading into Hawtin's short, irresistible remix of his own "Orange/Minus 1" then abruptly stopping with one of the album's few respites--a quick clip of movie dialogue. It's a brief pause, and the omnipresent beat restarts only slightly less demanding and brutally danceable than before. Hawtin's record is a stellar example, at a time when twisted jungle beats rule the dance floors, of getting people to dance a lot more by using a lot less. --Matthew Cooke Fragt: Ukendt! |

Maddy Prior Arthur the KingSe flere produkter fra AmazonOne thing is certain about Maddy Prior: she doesn't set out to make life easy for herself or her audience. Arthur the King sees her continue the weighty themes of recent solo work. Her post-Steeleye Span solo career has involved more and more complex themes and musical projects, and at the core of this album is a 10-track suite about Arthur, clocking in at a little under 30 minutes. This is perhaps a little much too much to take in one sitting and while certainly an interesting topic (as Prior's sleevenotes testify), Arthur the King is just a touch unwieldy. Musically though, high points do emerge--Maddy has attempted nothing as rocky as "Tribal Warriors" in years and it suits her while the playing of Troy Donockley and Nick Holland is, as ever, quite superb. After the lengthy opening, the five songs that make up the second half of the album fly by in a relative flash but benefit from their brevity, distilling Prior's unique approach to traditional music into a more manageable form. Maddy Prior's refusal to take the easy route is to be applauded, and while some of her audience may well feel unable to make the journey with her, those who persevere will be rewarded. --Phil Udell Fragt: Ukendt! |

Ja Rule Venni Vetti VecciSe flere produkter fra AmazonWithout DMX, there would be no Ja Rule. When the gravelly voiced Dark Ma n X bum-rushed the rap world, he paved the path for a whole slew of next-generation leathernecks with flows to match. That being said, Rule is a worthy adversary for his oft-maligned peer, managing to combine DMX's signature stuttery, acerbic flow with just a hint of Jay-Z's flash and wit. The production, handled largely by Irv Gotti, is trademark New York thug style, suiting Rule's grumbles to a T. Yet amid the tales of "murda" (and there are many), there are some moments of insurgent sunshine. "Race Against Time" is the thug's lament, no less potent for its obligatory nature. And on "Let's Ride", Rule winks at the ladies, telling them "My style is so touching, it'll wipe your eye". To boot, he prints his lyrics in the booklet, an all-too-rare phenomenon in rap. Caesar he ain't, but emperor for a day? Certainly. -- Jon Caramanica Fragt: Ukendt! |

Ruben Gonzalez IntroducingSe flere produkter fra AmazonCuban pianist Rubén González has lived through this century's greatest musical windstorms, from the emergence of son to salsa to Latin Jazz and more. Born in 1919, González also retired from playing professionally years before this, his debut CD, was even recorded. He reemerged in 1996 when World Circuit stopped in Cuba to record for several days. He ended up making a thrilling debut. This impromptu CD was cut in a day, and its limber vibe shines for all its uptempo looseness. Lucy Pearl Lucy PearlSe flere produkter fra AmazonWhile its songs aren't always as memorable as those of Tony Toni Toné--the million-selling but still under-appreciated band that spawned singer Raphael Saadiq--the debut of R&B trio Lucy Pearl does flash some of the same smart, unpredictable spirit. Along with ex-En Voguer Dawn Robinson and former Tribe Called Quest beatmaster Ali Shaheed Muhammad, Saddiq brings his trademark eye for detail to the funky party anthem "Dance Tonight", the school-days nostalgia of "Remember the Times", and the self-explanatory rager "Can't Stand Your Mother". Guests Q-Tip and Snoop Dogg are slyly affectionate on the love-jones celebration "You". Finally, it's certain that Lucy Pearl will be remembered as 2000's only neo-soul album to include both a hard-rock workout ("Hollywood") and a college marching band. --Rickey Wright Fragt: Ukendt! |
