Andrea Bocelli AndreaSe flere produkter fra AmazonIt's no mean feat being the world's foremost crossover artist--a task that risks alienating two disparate audiences and everyone in between--but somebody had to do it, and Andrea Bocelli again walks that artistic tightrope with impressive deftness. The title may imply a casual intimacy (indeed, the singer admits to taking a more "hands-on" approach to the album's conception and production), but it's a collection that nonetheless continues to expand on the Italian tenor's ambitious internationalism. His collaboration "Sin Tu Amor" immerses his voice in the Gipsy Kings' own rich Iberian folk-pop fusion with compelling results, while "Where Love Goes" (a musical focal point of the film Lazarus Child), his English language duet with 11-year-old prodigy Holly Stell, achieves an almost liturgical grace. "Tu Ci Sei" (You Are There) continues in the romantic vein of his familiar theme "Con Te Partiro" (Time to Say Goodbye), while the single "Dell' Amore Non Si Sa" (With Love You Never Know) features Bocelli in a signature dramatic tour de force collaboration with arranger Mauro Malavasi, the accomplished producer of the singer's Romanza and Sogno albums. Bocelli's shrewd taste and vocal prowess here not only again redeem an oft-maligned genre, but elevate it considerably in the bargain. --Jerry McCulley Fragt: Ukendt! |

Fairport Convention UnhalfbrickingSe flere produkter fra AmazonUnhalfbricking marked a turning-point for Fairport Convention and is a definitive amalgam of their influences. The three Bob Dylan songs featured look to their past as a band predominantly influenced by American folk, rock & roll and singer-songwriters such as Joni Mitchell and Dylan himself. "Si Tu Dois Partir", a French-language version of Dylan's "If You Gotta Go Go Now", was their only hit single and their shared singing on a rave-up version of "Million Dollar Bash" provides a fitting finale to the album. Sandy Denny and Richard Thompson were quite possibly the best female vocalist and best guitarist the UK has ever produced, but at this stage they were also budding songwriters of extraordinary potency. They each contributed two songs, showcasing a lyrical and musical vision beyond their years. Thompson's spellbinding "Genesis Hall" opens the album, his "Cajun Woman" provides a raunchy diversion into authentically swampy music. Denny contributes "Autopsy" and "Who Knows Where The Time Goes"; the first is an early jazz-influenced number, the second one of the most stunning songs she ever wrote. The final part of the jigsaw is the 11-minute "A Sailor's Life", representing the future of the band. A folk song that Sandy knew, they transmuted it to stunning effect, showcasing Thompson's guitar playing alongside the searing violin of eclectic folkie Dave Swarbrick in a long electric workout to close the tune. Swarbrick enjoyed the result so much that he joined the band. An authentically timeless album and quite possibly the place to start (though not to stop) if you have never before heard any Fairport Convention. --James Swift Fragt: Ukendt! |

Phi-Life Cypher Millennium MetaphorsSe flere produkter fra AmazonLike early Public Enemy, Phi-Life Cypher are as much about sociological issues as they are about hip-hop; their lyrical content is as important and powerful as the raw beats and dark, urban sounds that back them. Millennium Metaphors is, in the oldest rap tradition, an uncompromising account of society's shortcomings, with some reasonable suggestions as to how they should be dealt with. It is the sound of the streets--though, in this case, the streets of Luton. Signed to DJ Vadim's Jazz Fudge label, the group (MCs Si Phili and Life, together with producer Nappa) matches the Wu-Tang's ability to menace with hard-edged hypnotic loops and cinematic backdrops, and their lyrical dexterity--running through the alphabet, firing of their political and musical manifesto without pausing for breath on "A.B.C."--is above and beyond anything heard state-side in years. (Just because they're UK hip-hop, doesn't mean they're second rate hip-hop.) The Phi-Life selling point is that their pounding rhymes, far from aping US ghetto life, attack the National Health Service, Tony Blair and transport cutbacks, along with politician's excessive lifestyles. It may not be as glamorous as guns and gangs, but it's real, relevant and all the more powerful. --Dan Gennoe Fragt: Ukendt! |

Enrique Iglesias Enrique IglesiasSe flere produkter fra AmazonLight rock tunes and soft pop ballads marked Enrique Iglesias's 1995 debut, but what obviously propelled him to the top of the charts was his young good looks and his pedigree, son of perhaps the most famous troubadour in the music world--Julio Iglesias. "Trapecista" and "Experiencia Religiosa" were solid tunes with catchy hooks. And even on the simple tune "Por Amarte", one can detect Iglesias exploring wailful tones and learning the power of melodic phrasing. In "Si Tu Te Vas", he examines idealistic love, while "Inalcansable" captures youthful dreams. Those songs are the bright spots in an otherwise pedestrian pop-ballad CD. The fact that Iglesias scored five consecutive number one singles on Billboard from this CD may attest more to the power of the elder Iglesias's worldwide fans. --Ramiro Burr Fragt: Ukendt! |

Los Amigos Invisibles Arepa 3000: A Venezuelan Journey Into SpaceSe flere produkter fra AmazonLos Amigos Invisibles pull out all the stops on their second album, Arepa 3000: A Venezuelan Journey Into Space. Deliberately eclectic and multi-styled, the Venezuelan six-piece take their cue from the Western dance music that infiltrated the clubs of Caracas in the 1980s and '90s. Although they respect Latin styles, all of the tracks on Arepa take their cue from French house, disco, funk, hip-hop, drum & bass. Where others fail in similar experiments, Los Amigos Invisibles' effort is sure-footed with only the occasional detail imparting a feel of false modishness. The album checks in with the title track, a swooning melancholic groove that could give anything on the Compost label a run for its money. Then it morphs into the summery funk of "La Vecina" before giving "Que Rico" the Salsoul disco treatment. There are nods to the Latin dancefloor where the band successfully rips up the rulebook: tracks like the merengue of "El Sobon" and bossa nova "Si Estuvierras Tu" hint at the band's versatility and sense of fun. But it's songs such as "Amor" and the steamy "Piazo e' Perra" which really articulate where their affinities lie. These breezy slices of Latino-house are beefed up by a Masters At Work-style production, proving that Los Amigos Invisibles certainly know how to rock the dancefloor. Solid and wonderfully irreverent, Arepa is sweaty and raucous dance music that feels enigmatically out of time. -- Maxine Kabuubi Fragt: Ukendt! |

Various Lost in SpaceSe flere produkter fra AmazonWith short blasts from the TV show's third year titles by John Williams, cinema darlings Apollo 440 funk up the "Lost In Space Theme". They also dabble in Jean Michel Jarre territory for a scatter-fire keyboard tinkling on "Will & Penny's Theme". Their closest top spot rivals in the late 90s were the Propellerheards, whose mileage from just two or three tunes was amazing. "Bang On!" sits in very nicely sandwiched between "Busy Child" from The Crystal Method and "Everybody Needs a 303" from Fatboy Slim. Does any of it have anything to do with the picture? Not really. Certainly the trance mix of Siouxsie & the Banshees meets Portishead from Juno Reactor & the Creatures is far, far away from Bruce Broughton's original score. He gets a decent half-hour airing as the second half of the disc. But in fairness all his material works better on the Original Motion Picture Score release from Intrada Records. --Paul Tonks Fragt: Ukendt! |

Waterboys Too Close to Heaven: the Unreleased Fisherman's Blues SessionsSe flere produkter fra AmazonToo Close To Heaven is effectively a long-delayed sequel to The Waterboys' 1988 classic Fisherman's Blues. The sessions that yielded Fisherman's Blues have long been the stuff of legend, and the bare statistics describe a logistical enterprise only slightly less ambitious than D-Day: 41 musicians taking 303 days in 13 studios in four countries to record 159 songs. Mike Scott could continue to release companion pieces to Fisherman's Blues for some time to come. The songs on Too Close To Heaven are all recognisably of the Fisherman's Blues era--this is the lusty take on Irish folk music familiar from that record. What sets Too Close To Heaven apart is that many tracks hark back to the elemental ferocity of earlier Waterboys albums, especially A Pagan Place. On that score, perhaps Too Close To Heaven should be considered more a prequel than a sequel to Fisherman's Blues. Whatever, one can never have too many albums of The Waterboys on this kind of form. --Andrew Mueller Fragt: Ukendt! |

Various Artists Skint Presents Brassic Beats Vol.1Se flere produkter fra AmazonThis is where it all kicked off for Skint records, apostles of big beat and home of the planet conquering Fatboy Slim. Two of the earliest Fatboy tracks are featured here, "Santa Cruz" and "Everybody Needs A 303", betraying an almost quaint house influence which would soon be built upon to crunching effect. At this stage of the game, Bentley Rhythm Ace looked to be further along the evolutionary path with their swirling calliope-style effort "Bentley's Gonna Sort You Out", while the most prescient numbers are a pair of mini-monsters from Cut Le Roc. Skint's first compilation is more history making than booty shaking; it's all good, but it sounds a little tame compared to what they would shortly achieve with bigger budgets and more liberated imaginations. -- David Bennun Fragt: Ukendt! |

Boyz II Men IISe flere produkter fra AmazonAlready big stars courtesy of their debut, Cooleyhighharmony, the Boyz blasted off into superstar orbit on this CD. Of course those lush harmonies had a little something to wrap themselves around; namely the magnificent ballads "I'll Make Love to You" and "On Bended Knee." Corny? Si. Wholesome? And how. Obviously that didn't stop the biggest male vocal act of the 1990s from crooning all the way to the bank, several million times over. --Amy Linden Fragt: Ukendt! |

Various Artists Botchit Breaks Vol.3Se flere produkter fra AmazonBotchit and Scarper construct slamming breakbeat tracks, as can be witnessed here on this blistering collection of typically high standard cuts. Kicking off with a couple of bass-heavy vocal cuts from Kasha (featuring Shara Nelson) and new kid on the block, Teked, this compilation romps through a vast array of breakbeat styles. The fresh work and remixes from stalwarts like Freq Nasty, BLIM, T-Power and Rennie Pilgrem (who manages a truly wicked take on Freq Nasty's classic Freq-A-Zoid) as well as tunes from new faces like Jason Sparks, Cosmic Jerk. Electronic whizz Si-Begg turns in some garage flava while Talkin' Loud's Raw Deal on a remix tip. If that's not enough to make you reach, CD 2 is mixed by BLIM saving you the hassle of borrowing a set of decks for your next party.-- Matt Anniss Fragt: Ukendt! |
