Patty Larkin Perishable FruitSe flere produkter fra AmazonSome of America's finest female singer/songwriters are trying to find a place between country music, folk music, and pop where they can make their literary lyrics felt without allowing the music to fall into predictable patterns. A new milestone in this ongoing quest is Patty Larkin's 1997 album, Perishable Fruit. Larkin, who was a Celtic and jazz guitarist before hitting the folk-coffeehouse circuit, steps into the producer's slot for the first time on this, her seventh solo project. To avoid the temptation of repeating herself, she set herself a challenge--she would make the entire album only with voice and stringed instruments, no drums or keyboards. That doesn't mean there's no percussion on the recording, for Larkin invited her favorite musicians into her home studio on Cape Cod and encouraged them to bang on their basses, dulcimers, lap-steel guitars, cellos, e-bow guitars, and mandolins to reinforce the beat. The result is an unusual soundscape where all the percussion arrives with a twang, and where delicate acoustic arpeggios are set against sustained electric-guitar drones. The presence of so many stringed-instrument parts creates a big space, but the absence of keyboard chords and reverberating drums also opens up a lot of room within that space. Larkin takes advantage of this room to sing in a whispery, intimate voice about a woman who feels suffocated by old houses, old stories, old fears, old lovers, old arguments, and old music and wants to hit the road, read a new book, get out of the car, take a deep breath, let go of the mace, and pick up a red accordion. Larkin has a way with words, whether describing the narrow choices imposed by poverty ("You don't say no with an empty belly and a barbed-wire bonnet on a wolf hangin' at your door") or love gone wrong ("I saw you as you drove away, ... you checked yourself in the rearview mirror"). But it's her ability to match these words with a new kind of country/folk/pop/chamber music that makes this album so special. When Larkin sings of drowning in c Fragt: Ukendt! |

Tottenham Hotspur FC Tottenham Hotspur FC: Glory GlorySe flere produkter fra AmazonIt's hard to imagine a football compilation by a single club that could spawn a colossal 28 tracks. Beyond the customary Cup Final re-makes (of which Tottenham had plenty), this glory box contains many of the unforgettable singles which confirmed the notion that footballers were the new Pop Stars. The rose amongst the thorns is definitely the 1980s power ballad "Diamond Lights" by Spurs and England internationals Glenn & Chris (or Hoddle & Waddle. If you prefer). Following closely behind is the Lindesfarne classic "Fog on the Tyne", given the 90s once over by cheeky Paul Gascoigne. The collection's most enduring features are the instant terrace hits by Tottenham's greatest supporters, Chas & Dave. Their song which really sums up the spirit and passion of the club is "Victory Song (We're off to Wembley 'cos we beat the Arsenal)". Perfect for a post-match knees up round the old Joanna. --David Trueman Fragt: Ukendt! |

G4 G4Se flere produkter fra AmazonAre G4 pop, are they opera or are they indeterminately heterogeneous enough to be identified as a new species called popera? Runners-up in the compellingly addictive television talent show X-Factor, this young and classically-trained male vocal quartet were arguably the only act distinctive enough to fulfil the incomparability criterion alluded to in the contest's title. When it came to the judges' evaluation, even the normally forthright and disputatious Simon Cowell found himself floundering between dumbstruck reticence and fence-straddling equivocation. What is clear, however, from G4's debut album is the populist supermarket direction they've been prodded in. In mitigation, perhaps this is understandable. Despite the bravery and accomplishment of applying operatic blossom to REM's "Everybody Hurts" and Radiohead's "Creep"- and let's hear some more of this emotive excellence, please--Trevor Horns' fail-safe production and the steadfastly predictable musical arrangements on the pop numbers enforces the sort of backdrop karaoke conservatism which distracts from G4's more interesting vocal work, which, after all, is this ensemble's very raison d'etre. So, there's no sign of G4's daft rendition of Britney's "Baby One More Time" but "Bohemian Rhapsody" is present in all its pleasantly pompous glory (a whole orchestra stands in for the Brian May guitar solo) while a hearty "Jerusalem" is likely to out belt the Welsh in any international rugger match singing showdown. And for tearful followers of the round ball game? "Nessum Dorma" and "You'll Never Walk Alone". --Kevin Maidment Fragt: Ukendt! |

Fairfield Four I Couldn't Hear Nobody PraySe flere produkter fra AmazonIn the '40s, a cappella gospel bands like the Dixie Hummingbirds and the Five Blind Boys were all over the radio. But after Soul Stirrers singer Sam Cooke switched from gospel to soul, the bands faded out, and until the Fairfield Four's reunion in the late '80s, it was almost impossible to hear new installments of this thrilling spiritual music. I Couldn't Hear Nobody Pray is the 1997 follow-up to the band's 1992 comeback album, and even nonbelievers will have trouble avoiding a spiritual experience when the singers' voices touch each other the right way. Elvis Costello (who writes fawning liner notes) and Pam Tillis show up for guest vocals, but they can't match the power of the Four's "There Must Be a City." --Steve Knopper Fragt: Ukendt! |

Explosions in the Sky All of a Sudden I Miss EveryoneSe flere produkter fra AmazonSometimes Explosions in the Sky start with a whisper and end with a scream, but on "Birth and Death of the Day", they begin with a scream and proceed into a symphonic odyssey that Aaron Copland might have composed if he'd played electric guitar. Like Copland, EITS are cinematic, but with more kinetic drive than any film--except maybe Koyaanisqatsi--could match. Compositions like "It's Natural to Be Afraid" take you on epic journeys that roar like a Harley Davidson one minute and slip into taut contemplation the next, using the slow-tension build that EITS have perfected. All of a Sudden I Miss Everyone was produced by John Congleton, who has worked with lo-fi groups like the Roots and the Mountain Goats. That might explain why the album lacks the atmosphere of EITS's monumental The Earth Is Not a Cold Dead Place and their Friday Night Lights soundtrack. Instead, they rely even more on the arc of their compositions and the integral twin lead guitar lines that never solo but always drive the songs. They can shift from power-chord aggression to the sound of plucked mandolins in an instant. This is progressive rock for people who weren't even born when prog reigned supreme. It's the sound of King Crimson, transmuted through punk and grunge aesthetics. --John Diliberto Fragt: Ukendt! |

Banco De Gaia 10 YearsSe flere produkter fra AmazonToby Marks--aka--Banco De Gaia, has been pumping out his own brand of globally conscious techno music for a remarkable ten years. X Marks The Spot is a collection of his works so far; nineteen records culled from the six artist albums he's put out--an impressive achievement in itself in the ephemeral/disposable world of DJ culture. There are many classic and instantly recognisable tracks here, and listening to them all in one run serves the purpose of reminding us what an adequate and often thrilling producer Marks is. In a dance scene saturated with techno/ambient producers, not many of them can match his way of combining seemingly disparate elements of sound--ambient, prog rock, dub, electronic--into a fibrous but cohesive and atmospheric whole. The layers of sound and deep, emotive textures just keep on coming, as tracks like "Last Train To Lhasa", "Obsidian", "Kincajou", "Drunk As A Monk", "Desert Wind", "Sinhala", "Touching The Void" and "Celestine" engage the mind and fuel the feet, and reveal one of the electronic scene's most talented and independently minded individuals.-- Paul Sullivan Fragt: Ukendt! |

Chemical Brothers Push the ButtonSe flere produkter fra AmazonHaving marked their 10th anniversary at the top of British dance music with a greatest hits collection, it would be easy to write the Chemical Brothers off in a genre that requires a certain freshness. However, Push the Button is a spectacular jump back to the top of their game, intensified by the rise of dance music in 2005. First single and opening track, "Galvanize", features Q-tip on vocals. It's a little more downtempo than the brothers of late as they got wrapped up in a need to produce a dancefloor killer to match the heady days of "Hey Boy, Hey Girl"--it's not too different, not too clever, but has enough of the necessary "oomph" to make it an excellent start to the album. In terms of classic sounding tracks, there are "Come Inside" and "The Big Jump", the former a big-beat spectacular and the latter a definite tune to be heard "out", replete with enormous slidey bassline and sticky acid stabs. A standout in a similar vein to "Galvanize" (although possibly better) is "Left Right" featuring Anwar Superstar. It's got a bold hip-hop swagger and politically charged lyrics over a chunky riff that wouldn't sound out of place in a seventies TV cop show. There are only two of the customary chillout tracks (think Beth Orton), there's "Hold tight London", an upbeat soca-styled song that's okay but not nearly as beautiful as sweeping epic "Close Your Eyes" featuring the Magic Numbers. Closing Push the Button are two more guitar-based tracks, the country-rocking loop of "Marvo Ging" and the brilliant mish-mash of styles that is "Surface to Air", a sort of rapturous amalgam of the brothers' own "Golden Path", the Strokes and festival favourites Dreadzone. A fantastic end to a consistent album that easily outshines its predecessor, Come with Us, and will hopefully herald a great year for electronic music.-- David Trueman Fragt: Ukendt! |

Carl Stalling Project The Carl Stalling Project, Volume 2: More Music From Warner Bros.Cartoons 1939-1957Se flere produkter fra AmazonThe second volume of the master Warner Bros. cartoon composer's work downplays the head-spinning montage of the first in favor of just-as-head-spinning complete scores. They aren't from the studio's best-known cartoons but from some of Stalling's most impressive tempo-warping, all-systems-go pieces, augmented by a few mini-pieces that illustrate the way he could transform barely familiar show tunes and classical themes into wild, rubbery jokes. Even without images, Stalling could make an orchestra suggest a "Flea-Ridden Sheep Dog" in 24 seconds flat and run enough changes on Stephen Foster's "Camptown Races" to match every mood in a Foghorn Leghorn cartoon. The head-snapping reversals of his scores anticipate much later avant-garde music. --Douglas Wolk Fragt: Ukendt! |

Celine Dion A New Day Has ComeSe flere produkter fra AmazonOne of the biggest selling female artists ever, Celine Dion's global appeal may seem incomprehensible to some but for those who appreciate her incredible voice and epic productions she has become a legend in her own lifetime. Dion's latest English language album A New Day Has Come is to a certain extent a very apt title since many of the 17 songs are filled with new ideas (well, new to Celine) and a sound more in keeping with the current trends. Take "Rain, Tax" for example, if it weren't for the theatrical vocal it could be mistaken for a rising pop/R&B number with a heavy emphasis on the stuttering rhythm and deep bass rather than sweet strings and weighty "power-ballad drums". Another experiment is the Cher-esque (minus vo-coder) "Sorry For Love" complete with pumping rhythm section and house pianos which is still very much Celine but not likely to ravage any dance floors across the land. But still, A New Day Has Come is still very much traditional vocal led pop-rock, heavy on the ballads, like the title track and lead single, with silky orchestration and enormous sounding drums complementing the theatrical presence of her voice in a style modern day easy listeners like Westlife will never match. -- Georgina Collins Fragt: Ukendt! |

Electronic ElectronicSe flere produkter fra AmazonElectronic are New Order frontman Bernard Sumner and ex- Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr, and this--their debut--was described by Melody Maker on its release as "one of the greatest albums ever made". This re-packaged version contains the singles "Get The Message", "Feel Every Beat" and "Getting Away With It"--the bands first release and one of two collaborations with the Pet Shop Boys. With Marr turning his back on the Smiths' trademark jangling guitars, the sound is more that of New Order crossed with the Madchester scene of the time (808 State, Happy Mondays, etc.). Sumner and Marr were never going to match the overall impact or quality of the Smiths and of New Order--for many, the two great English bands of the 1980s--but this is the best of their three albums. In the two big hits, as well as album tracks like "Idiot Country" and "Some Distant Memory", they succeed in recapturing some--if never quite all--of their former glories. --Ronita Dutta Fragt: Ukendt! |

Jim Kweskin & The Jug Band Acoustic Swing and JugSe flere produkter fra AmazonWhen God is your harmonica player, you can hardly go wrong. Not that Mel Lyman was that talented of a harp blower--he simply woke up one day and declared his omnipotence, drawing Kweskin in as a disciple, but effectively dismantling one of the 1960s' most eclectic and memorable bands. The Kweskin band looked back to Cannon's Jug Stompers and old-time string bands for inspiration, infusing these classic styles with a slurred, if not drunken, pre-hippie sensibility. With talents such as Bill Keith and the Muldaurs (Geoff and Maria) on board, Kweskin pulled it off magically, able to match high-level picking and singing with a loose delivery and an overriding sense of revelry. The formula, as informal as it was, had room for jug classics, early jazz and ragtime, John Hurt and Blind Boy Fuller, Uncle Dave Macon, Kahn and Whiting, Leiber and Stoller, even Chuck Berry. This 20-song collection offers a wonderful snapshot of the Kweskin band's aesthetic, one in which all parts are in service to the master--no, not Mel Lyman, but musical whoopee. --Marc Greilsamer Fragt: Ukendt! |

Spade Cooley Shame on You: The Western Swing Dance GangSe flere produkter fra AmazonCooley and his Western Swing Dance Gang virtually dominated the Southern California ballroom circuit during the World War II years, so these radio transcriptions from 1944 and 1945 capture this hefty ensemble at its peak. Country, jazz, cowboy, and dance music come together in a fury of fiddles, accordions, and guitars as Cooley's Gang shifts from affable ballads (crooned by silky-smooth Tex Williams) to vivacious polkas, stomps, and rags. Much of this material is covered by Sony's Spadella! compilation, but those studio versions don't quite match the spontaneity of these performances. Considering the dearth of available Cooley material--and his band's enormous talent--these bubbly cuts take on even greater import. --Marc Greilsamer Fragt: Ukendt! |

Tracy Chapman New BeginningSe flere produkter fra AmazonDespite what the title may imply, New Beginning doesn't see Tracy Chapman adopting a new musical persona, as so many singer-songwriters have done to boost their declining credibility. If anything, her style is as conservative as it was on her previous three albums. That said, the contents of New Beginning are slightly lighter than her eponymous debut, and her political views--which were emblazoned all over her second album, Crossroads--have been toned down. "Give Me One Reason" is a punchy bluesy number, and the "Smoke And Ashes" is a stylish, romantic composition. Admittedly, nothing can match the originality and brilliance of her debut album, but New Beginning proves that she is still just as unique and relevant in a world full of Tracy Chapman wannabes. -- John Galilee Fragt: Ukendt! |

Tim Buckley Sing a Song for You - A Tribute To Tim BuckleySe flere produkter fra AmazonA quarter of a century may have passed since his untimely death, but new bands continue to line up to acknowledge Tim Buckley's influence. Yet few ever cover his songs, deterred by the prospect of comparisons or having to match their writer's vocal gymnastics. Finding acts prepared to participate on this tribute proved hard going for US label Manifesto, hence the absence of this obvious Buckleyites, Coldplay, who declined to take part. That leaves an interesting, eclectic, but, it must be said, fairly low-key set of acts, many with associations to 4AD, prepared to stand up and be counted. Geneva's Andrew Montgomery was destined to flex his angelic voice on something like "Pleasant Street" and the highly impressive Cousteau bring rich gravitas to the aching "Blue Melody", but former Cocteau Simon Raymonde and Bel Canto's Anneli Drecker provide the highpoint of the 17 tracks here with a shivering, mesmerising "Morning Glory". Performed with deep affection, Sing A Song For You should drive people back to the originals if nothing else. -- Mike Pattenden Fragt: Ukendt! |

Bowling For Soup Drunk Enough to DanceSe flere produkter fra AmazonThis is tragicomedy of the highest Loser order. Drunk Enough to Dance, the second album from Texan pop punks Bowling for Soup, rips through the kind of chugging riffs and high-school trauma that no US teen movie should be without. Led by former pet-shop owner Jaret Von Erich, the quartet here deliver 17 speedy doses of wise-cracking brat-pop while Von Erich picks over his hapless love life. As in the top-10 single "Girl All the Bad Guys Want"--a frustration-venting pogo-along about a hot rock-chick with a nose ring--the objects of his affection are invariably out of his league. This prompts a deluge of droll wallowing along the lines of this, in "Don't Wanna Rock": "She makes me want to be a homosexual / maybe then I'd be her best friend and see her naked once in a while." Even when he does get the girl of his dreams, in true screw-up style there are minor hiccups, as he whines regretfully on the lovelorn belter "Emily": "I got drunk / had sex with all your friends / you told me I should never call your house again." Self-conscious, self-deprecating, and heavy on the self-pity, with big choruses, killer lines and a persecution complex to match, slacker rock doesn't come much better than this. -- Dan Gennoe Fragt: Ukendt! |

Various Artists Soundbombing - Vol. IIISe flere produkter fra AmazonHere we go B-boys and girls with Soundbombing 3--the third showcase of Rawkus Records finest talents mixed in with some big-name stars. Thankfully there's no rent-a-rap-celeb such as Busta Rhymes or Nas, but good honest beats and hard-hitting rhymes delivered in a semi "mix-tape" style. Rawkus, once the bastion of independent hip-hop (though founded by Rupert Murdoch's son), may have sold itself to the major label devil, but as long as it sticks behind Mos Def, Talib Kweli and Pharoahe Monch it will always offer an alternative voice to the mainstream. Track 3 in this excellent series kicks off with guaranteed hit "The Life" by Styles P (of the Lox) and ex-Organized Konfusion man Pharaohe Monch. However it's not all smooth going from there. Mos Def's "Freak Daddy" is surprisingly disappointing, the resurrected old-Schooler Kool G Rap doesn't seem to be offering anything new (or indeed old), and the mixing from Mr Choc and Cipha Sounds doesn't match the quality of the previous albums (especially J-Rocc and Babu's cutting on SB2). Soundbombing 3 actually gets better near the end. It's a brave step using the Belgian/African group Zap Mama on a hip-hop album with the musically diverse "Yelling Away" and The Cocoa Brovaz cut "Spit Again" with Dawn Penn (yes her of "No, No, No" fame) is a ragga hip-hop banger of heavyweight nature. Q Tip also chips in with the typically sparse but itchily funky necksnapper "What Lies Beneath". However at less than an hour this is the least value for money of the three Soundbombings yet made. Not essential as the second, but if you own that you'll want this. -- Jake Barnes Fragt: Ukendt! |

Moloko Do You Like My Tight SweaterSe flere produkter fra AmazonDo You Like My Tight Sweater was released in a year when female vocalist led down-tempo acts were hitting saturation point. There seemed to be literally hundreds of enthusiastic epigones attempting to emulate the work of "trip-hop" artists like Tricky, Massive Attack, Portishead and Smith and Mighty. Most of these acts took the same introspective, zeitgeist-capturing route of these seminal Bristol bands--but not producer Mark Brydon (House Arrest, Cloud 9) and singer Roisin Murphy, aka Moloko (a name taken from the Anthony Burgess novel A Clockwork Orange). Their debut album, cheekily titled Do You Like My Tight Sweater, arrived on the dance scene without fanfare at around this time and presented a radically different take on the down-tempo sound. Boisterous, surreal and humorous, the LP resists the temptation to conjure up yet more disenchanted inner city isolation, seeking instead to paint a brighter--or at least quirkier--picture of modern living. Murphy's elfish, stream-of-consciousness lyrics are delivered here with an infectious slink appeal and are the perfect match for Brydon's slightly bonkers mix of hip-hop beats and funk mixed with groans, creaks, springs and slams. Featuring the cult hits "Fun For Me" and "Night For Day", Do You... also showcases a bunch more bewitching records, from the Os Mutantes sounding "Lotus Eaters", the sultry "Dominoid", the drum & bass kick of "Butterfly 747" and the silly funk of "Killa Bunnies". It's a rare and genuinely entertaining album. -- Paul Sullivan Fragt: Ukendt! |

The Proclaimers Life with YouSe flere produkter fra AmazonThat these two furnace-tonsilled brothers from Leith, Scotland remain almost uniquely celebrated for a pair of songs from the tail end of the 80s is, on one hand, a tribute to the undimmed magnificence of said songs--"I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)" especially verges on national anthem status, still holding court everywhere from wedding discos, student radio, Match of the Day backdrops and drunken sing-alongs home from the pub. But on the other that simply disregards the sturdy trunk of work they've built up since. A revitalised Proclaimers have in recent years been creeping up on festival crowds hanging about waiting for the hits, and unexpectedly enthralling them with hand-chiselled choruses and wild, windswept gusto--seventh album Life with You is accordingly the perfect accompaniment to more familiar distractions. Throughout 13 muscular tracks they strike Motown, folk, blues and rock `n' roll sparks into heartfelt, melodic pop blazes bellowed by that deliciously thick Scottish brogue. "Here It Comes Again" is a frenzied highlight, bouncing off the walls like a yo-yoing Joe Cocker cameo in The Commitments, and "In Recognition" and "Whole Wide World" are true anthems both, building from that familiar muted acoustic foundation, the former illustrating the clawing wit that sometimes pervades their writing and the latter an adorable chest-beating love song. The Proclaimers are very much still walking. --James Berry Fragt: Ukendt! |

Original Soundtrack Spawn - the AlbumSe flere produkter fra AmazonAn ingenious idea: as the darker end of electronica turns up the volume with scant regard for petty glitches like distortion, and the massed ranks of big-shorted proto-industrial metallers discover that, like, a sampler is a really good way of annoying the neighbours, Spawn seeks to unite both tribes with an album of collaborations, all marching under the banner of neo-gothic cinematic ultra-violence. This is a good thing, mainly because it produces some inspired match-ups; Slayer and Atari Teenage Riot's "No Remorse (I Wanna Die)" is the track that was just begging to be written, but elsewhere Metallica's Kirk Hammet adds a whole lot of metal to Orbital's "Satan", and Roni Size teams up with Yank abstractionists Soul Coughing, offering the chopped-up jazz of "A Plane Scraped Its Belly On A Sooty Yellow Moon." Not quite the sum of its parts, but close. --Louis Pattison Fragt: Ukendt! |

The Trashmen Surfin' BirdSe flere produkter fra AmazonAlthough there's no shortage of Trashmen records out there (a 4 CD box set, a live album, outtakes), and none of it's waste product, this expanded version of the Minnesota surf gonzos' 1964 debut (and only contemporary) album is the best way to find out if their trash is worth your cash. The song they're famous for, "Surfin' Bird," is a frat/surf novelty classic that makes "Louie Louie" sound like "Go Away Little Girl." Two West Coast R&B novelties by the Rivingtons, "Papa Oo Mow Mow Mow" and "The Bird's the Word," are knitted together by a pulsing Midwest surf beat, with a harsh monotone vocal giving way at strategic moments to some of the most graphic sounds of regurgitation ever recorded. If this sounds appealing (and there's no earthly reason it shouldn't), there are more delights within, although only "Bird Bath" attempts (unsuccessfully) to match the hit. You get some nicely executed surf instrumentals, slightly surf-inflected covers of "It's So Easy" and "Money," and some especially commissioned (from a friend of the band) surf and hotrod songs crammed full of period jargon. Bonus tracks include a demo of "Surfin' Bird"'s too-close-for-comfort followup, "Bird Dance Beat," and a sweetly goofy Christmas single that has Santa and his reindeer doing the Watusi with Peggy Sue, Short Fat Fannie, and other regular partygoers of the era. --Ken Barnes Fragt: Ukendt! |
