Merle Haggard If I Could Only FlySe flere produkter fra AmazonHaggard's decision to sign with an imprint of the Epitaph label--ho me of Rancid, The Offspring and NoFX, amongst others--may initially seem a curious one. However, the distinguished country veteran has far more in common with these punk outsiders than he does with the vacuous Garth Brooks clones who now masquerade as country singers, and it is to be hoped that this new deal will do for Haggard what an association with Def American did for his friend Johnny Cash. Certainly, If I Could Only Fly sounds like the work of a man reinvigorated. Almost as if he recognises that he might be showcasing his abilities for a new generation, he saunters through a bewildering mix of styles, leavening his straightforward country laments--the title track is as good as any he's written--with a couple of honky-tonk rave-ups and some affecting efforts at torch balladry. His lyrics, as ever, are directly confessional quests for redemption--"Proud To Be Your Old Man" and "I'm Still Your Daddy" tell quite movingly of an ongoing struggle to satisfy the call of the road and the duties of home--and his voice, in the manner of Willie Nelson, is only sounding better with age. Hard-Fi Stars of Cctv [VINYL]Se flere produkter fra AmazonRoad-tested in a car speeding the mean streets of Staines, Stars Of CCTV - the debut album from Middlesex's Hard-Fi - consciously sets out to update the sense of frustrated tension and suburban dread that powered second-wave ska acts like The Specials and The Beat back at the close of the `70s. Don't get it twisted, this isn't ska-punk a la Brit troupers [Spunge] and Capdown: Hard-Fi play this music lean and moody, like The Streets on downers, or Massive Attack plugging in and tuning up. "Cash Machine" sees a swallowed debit card as the jump-off for vocalist Richard Archer to spin a tale of crushing poverty and unwanted pregnancy, spurred along by thrumming dub bass and the sad wheeze of a vibraphone. They do upbeat as well, as club anthem "Hard To Beat" - a heart-fluttering composite of Northern Soul elation and fist-pumping Rockers reggae - joyfully confirms. But it's the emotional struggle, the ups and downs of life, that keeps Stars Of CCTV engaging throughout: see penultimate track "Living For The Weekend", a hedonistic blast filled with not a little of the passion that fuelled Oasis' Definitely Maybe, which succeeds chiefly because it's all too aware of the bad times as well as the good. --Louis Pattison Fragt: Ukendt! |

Various Straight Out the Cat Litter Scoop, Vol. 2Se flere produkter fra AmazonBased in Brighton, Catskills label boss Johnny Reggae judges all signings to the label on their "head-nod factor". As this compilation proves, to get the Catskills nod it's got to be hip and it's got to be hop, but it can also be a little bit jazz, a little bit sixties kitsch and can even get away with a few wistful strings if it's lucky. Featuring nine Catskills artists this is a sometime sample heavy, up-down-tempo taster of said house style--and when they talk about cat litter, you can only presume they are referring to it being some funky shit. Kicking things off are Finnish loop heroes Pepe Deluxe, one of Catskills first signings. "Woman in Blue" is a happy-go-lucky opener on a mission, while another of their tracks, the previously unreleased "Call Me Goldfinger", ups the jack-factor just as things were getting all smooth in "Le Salon" thanks to the French flavours of capsule. Feature Cast, only one release deep on the label, proves his reputation as a master of up-tempo breaks, as one of the eclectic and yet strangely homogeneous rosta of artists showcased here. -- Ruby Shepheard Fragt: Ukendt! |

J.S. Bach: Cantatas BWV 72 / 73 / 111 / 156Se flere produkter fra AmazonJohn Eliot Gardiner, the Monteverdi Choir and the gut-strung English Baroque Soloists sound fresh and incisive on this Deutsche Grammophon CD of the four cantatas which Bach wrote for the third Sunday after Epiphany. The cantatas were performed and recorded live on that day in January 2000, early into the Bach Pilgrimage Tour. They had reached Milan, Italy, and were keen, new pilgrims not long into a journey. The gospel reading for Epiphany III depicts a similarly young, enthusiastic and wilful Jesus at the start of his mission. Lepers walk; the palsied revive; whatever Jesus wills, happens. Three of the cantatas begin with bracing choruses about divine will. "Allein nur nach Gottes Willen" opens the disc with a blaze of determined, rhythmic singing and playing. It is the finest track on the CD although the beautiful Sinfonia at the start of "Ich steh mit einem FuÃ? im Grabe", an occasional encore piece, also makes it worth the purchase. The soloists have mixed fortunes. Soprano Joanne Lunn soars brightly--she has been the star of the tour. Contralto Sara Mingardo sounds edgy, tenor Julian Podger dry, and bass Stephen Varcoe, a last-minute replacement, sometimes trips on his ornaments. Audience applause has been wiped, which may be a mistake. -- Rick Jones Fragt: Ukendt! |

Leonard Cohen More Best of Leonard CohenSe flere produkter fra AmazonCanadian poet Leonard Cohen sings with great weight and authority and his lyrics are among the most elegant and scripted of the rock era. This collection is culled from his past three albums (1988's I'm Your Man, 1992's The Future, and 1994's Cohen Live) and shows a man whose voice has deepened to the point of grim, foreboding death with lyrics sharpened to masterful precision. The arrangements are deliberately clunky--the cheese- whiz female back-ups lend unusual tension bordering on parody--but the sentiments are for real. Two previously unreleased cuts, "Never Any Good" and the non-event, "The Great Event" suggest his well is currently dry. But the unrelenting bleakness of "The Future" and uneasy celebration of "Democracy" are among the past decade's most challenging pop works. --Rob O'Connor Fragt: Ukendt! |

Jimmy Smith Root DownSe flere produkter fra AmazonRoot Down captures the king of the Hammond B3 organ, Jimmy Smith, playing down and dirty R'n'B. It isn't that Smith had forgotten that he was one of the jazz greats for this 1972 live concert but with a LA rhythm section, there is most definitely a groove here. A damn funky groove at that. The album includes two versions (one previously unissued) of Smith's "Root Down", a song covered by the Beastie Boys in 1994. There is also a hypnotic reading of Al Green's pleading "Let's Stay Together", which yet again proves that Jimmy Smith is a man with a lot of soul. But it is when he ups the pace that the album really comes alive, such as on his "Slow Down Sagg", released here in its entirety for the first time. Accompanied by Arthur Adams on fat back guitar, its raw funk would impress James Brown. With Root Down, dancing shoes are essential. -- Phil Brett Fragt: Ukendt! |

Gorillaz Laika Come HomeSe flere produkter fra AmazonSo, the Gorillaz have hired some space monkeyz to remix their album? Right... The official story behind Laika Come Home is that it's the product of an intergalactic odyssey apparently undertook by D-Zire, Dubversive and Gavva, all descendents of the first chimps sent into space. And what does a lonely simian listen to in the dark coldness of space? Why bone-shaking dubscapes with enough reverb to transmit their message to the outer edges of the universe, of course. Re-editing and producing a dub version of an album might sound like a pretty self-indulgent affair and to a certain extent Laika is. Whilst Gorillaz sounded original, it was a pop project with all the constraints that went with it - can you imagine the 6 minute remixed version of "Clint Eastwood" making it onto MTV?. But that's exactly what makes Laika so good. Listen to the "De-Punked" version of "Punk" with its meandering, decayed trumpet and computerised tweaks-- hardly recognisable as the original--or the swinging old-school ska that crops ups on "5/4". The two-tone skank of "M1/A1" (with Terry Hall) sounds like it should have been the original version, while the real killer tracks are those injected with dancehall vibes by DJ U Brown and Earl 16. Who says "you don't get paid for doing what you love"? Not Damon Albarn. -- Caroline Butler Fragt: Ukendt! |

Genesis We Can't DanceSe flere produkter fra AmazonWe Can't Dance is the final Genesis studio album to feature Phil Collins, and he is even more firmly in the driving seat than with their previous release, Invisible Touch. However, We Can't Dance has little of its predecessor's exuberant freshness. Over 70 minutes long, much of the album feels as though the inspiration and ideas have been spread too thinly, resulting in a new-found flabbiness in the arrangements and the lyrics. In particular, Collins' too-predictable vocal mannerisms can soon start to grate; in conjunction with the appallingly trite expressions of political concern that are "Tell Me Why" and "Way Of The World", they produce a rather distasteful spectacle. Of course this is not the whole story, and there are moments throughout when the carefully crafted choruses and smoothly integrated sound of later Genesis win through to great effect. The most effective tracks include "Dreaming While You Sleep", "No Son Of Mine" and "I Can't Dance". "Hold On My Heart" proves that Collins can still produce real emotion rather than mere shallow ballads of mid-life crisis. A thoroughly slick and professional offering, it's a shame that despite the self-mocking humour of the title, the album has rather a drab air about it. It's not surprising that this was the line-ups' last recording together. --James Swift Fragt: Ukendt! |

Fleetwood Mac Fleetwood MacSe flere produkter fra AmazonWith the "classic" Fleetwood Mac and departed guitarists Peter Green and Jeremy Spencer a fading memory, namesakes and rhythm section Mick Fleetwood (drums) and John McVie (bass), along with second generation survivor Christine McVie (vocals, keyboards), let go of their British blues heritage and linked with a failed Californian pop-rock duo, Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks. That move, born of desperation, yields this 1975 classic: unveiling a taut, well-oiled pop rock band boasting three distinctive singers and songwriters in Buckingham, Nicks and Christine McVie; Buckingham's extraordinary arrangements and versatile acoustic and electric guitars; and the undeniable horsepower of the founding fathers' rock-solid rhythm work. Buckingham's rave-ups, Nicks's sultry rock ballads, and Christine McVie's soulful, sunny pop form the template for Rumours, which would follow two years later. -- Sam Sutherland Fragt: Ukendt! |

Kelis TastySe flere produkter fra AmazonKelis's debut album was a phenomenal success, but the muted interest in the follow-up has been followed by low expectations for her third album, Tasty. "Caught Out There", from Kaleidoscope, had her storming the airwaves with a chant of "I hate you so much right now!" and she returns with "Milkshake", a schoolyard taunt for grown-up girls. The minimalist Neptunes production was an obvious first single but the CD hardly stops there. From collaborations with Andre 3000 ("Millionaire", a showcase for the OutKast frontman's falsetto) and Nas (the randy "In Public") and a rap-rock exercise ("Keep It Down") to irresistible updates of early 1980s R&B ("Protect My Heart", "Glow"), the disc offers plenty in the way of potential follow-ups. While less playful than some of her past work, Tasty brings a raised eyebrow and good humour to the 21st century sex-u-up template. --Rickey Wright Fragt: Ukendt! |

John Tavener Tavener - Lamentations and PraisesSe flere produkter fra AmazonThe composer calls this work "a liturgical drama", but there is nothing dramatic about it; it is more aptly described by the title of its three main sections, "Stasis". Set to texts from the Greek and Russian Orthodox Easter service sung in English interspersed with ancient Greek words, it is scored for male voices and an odd combination of strings, winds and extra-large percussion instruments, including a Byzantine monastery bell, a Tibetan temple bowl, a tam-tam and a simantron (a wooden board struck with a hammer). The music, in Tavener's characteristic medieval, monastic, Byzantine style, is devout, contemplative and very slow with endlessly sustained notes and chords, and based on structurally determined repetition. Anchored by bass or descant drones, the chorus moves in parallel chordal progressions, alternating with ornate, melismatic solos and punctuated by regularly repeated crashes from the bell and bowl. Variety is created through changes of key, vocal and instrumental texture and motivic material. Several sections culminate in climactic build-ups of volume and intensity. Some of the music is very beautiful, but its repetitiousness and basically unchanging character make a sense of monotony unavoidable. Perhaps only listeners who share Tavener's own deep spirituality can fully enter into his musical world. The performance by Chanticleer is wonderful. The voices float with a transparent, pure, otherworldly sound--it seems unbelievable that the altos and sopranos, who go up to high Fs and Gs, are really male singers--and the instruments match them perfectly in tone and style.-- Edith Eisler Fragt: Ukendt! |

Various Artists Blues Brothers 2000Se flere produkter fra AmazonNo need to say one word about the film itself, except what a fabulous excuse it is for a well-thought out R&B soundtrack. Fans of the classic original movie can at least say they weren't cheated on the important musical side, and they can rejoice at the reappearance of Donald "Duck" Dunn on bass guitar as he strums away with the rest of the reunited Blues Brothers Band. The repertoire is covered with Aretha Franklin belting out an updated cover of "R-E-S-P-E-C-T", and a tighter performance of "Can't Turn You Loose". Nodding to the big number successes of the original is a new Gospel showstoppper in "Revelation", while "Riders In The Sky" is clearly a replacement "Rawhide". Does John Goodman fill the big shoes? Indeed he does. His throaty warble sits just right next to Dan Aykroyd's nasal mimicking. "Funky Nassau" is thebaton-passing number where each instrument is introduced and given a solo spotlight. The Brothers old and new get to prove their vocal range here too. Get out the Ray-Bans and smoke them turkeys! --Paul Tonks Fragt: Ukendt! |

Human League Greatest HitsSe flere produkter fra AmazonThe reunion that inspired this collection was of debatable wisdom--the title of the rather limp comeback single, "Tell Me When", couldn't help but prompt the response "About a decade ago, you daft old buggers"--but the collection itself is, almost by definition, unimpeachable. The Human League at their best performed that rarest of feats--defined a moment, and transcended it. Any reputation that can survive a shocker like "The Lebanon"--it of the oft-quoted, rarely bettered and, frankly, still hilarious "And where there used to be some shops / Is where the snipers sometimes hide" lyrical own goal is built on sturdy foundations indeed. The songs on Greatest Hits are, simply put, as good as pop gets: "Don't You Want Me", "Mirror Man", "Fascination" and, well, all of them, amount to the definitive exercise in storming the charts entirely on one's own terms. Before The Human League, bands were supposed to choose between being cool and being successful: the indie underachiever ethic was beginning to exert its clammy grip on the alternative sector. The Human League, like ABC at around the same time, were too smart to fall for any such nonsense--what was the point of pop if it wasn't popular? And this is why people still love the songs on this album and nobody talks all that much about The Close Lobsters. The history of popular music is a history of cheap, disposable pop music for kids triumphing over serious, intelligent rock music for grown-ups (The Jacksons' "I Want You Back" still fills dance floors; Genesis's "The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway" reliably empties rooms). The Human League joined the winning side, and taught it to play better than ever. --Andrew Mueller Fragt: Ukendt! |

Dead Kennedys Mutiny on the Bay: Live from the San Francisco Bay AreaSe flere produkter fra AmazonThe live collection Mutiny on the Bay is an unnecessary afterthought; more rebellion turned into money. Which is a shame, really, because the Dead Kennedys are, to this day, pretty much a holy grail in the annals of punk folklore. Their iconic status comes with good reason: their mighty debut, Fresh Fruit For Rotting Vegetables was one of the most concise punk statements of all time, a helium-voiced Biafra playing the role of savage, dictatorial satirist, presiding over a savage collision of Sex Pistols-derived riffs and proto-hardcore dynamics. But the trouble with acrimonious break-ups is that record-company barrel-scraping tends to corrupt such definite articles; this live compilation, Mutiny on the Bay, is apparently constructed from the vaults without the consent of Biafra, and while the hits are here intact--"California Uber Alles", "Police Truck" and "Too Drunk To F**k"--the impression this piecemeal style gives is not one of back-catalogue sifting, but of shoddy sequencing. Besides, what can this really offer that the essential originals lack? Even in the studio, the Kennedys performed so raw, fast and loud, they might as well be right there in the room with you. --Louis Pattison Fragt: Ukendt! |

Nine Inch Nails With TeethSe flere produkter fra AmazonTrent Reznor has always been a one-trick-pony, but it's a damn good trick: sunny melodies filtered through ferocious electronics. Unfortunately, the trick's impact was often watered down by a tendency toward petulance and self-absorption. Still, almost six years after NIN's last release, The Fragile, the trick itself has lost none of its Teen-Beat-from-hell appeal. With Teeth blisters from the start with "All the Love in the World," and tracks like "The Collector" take full advantage of Dave Grohl's sledgehammer drumming. Reznor stretches occasionally, trying out different tactics, from crunchy, overtly commercial rave-ups ("The Hand That Feeds") to borderline New Wave ("Only"). But Teeth isn't about stretching. It's about doing the same trick, only better, with less clutter and more bite. By neatly distilling the sparseness of Pretty Hate Machine with Downward Spiral-style density, it ends up being the most focused record in the NIN catalogue. --Matthew Cooke Fragt: Ukendt! |

Art Blakey The Best of Art Blakey & the Jazz MessengersSe flere produkter fra AmazonEven Earth tremors with accompanying landslides aren't as powerful as an Art Blakey drum solo. In this "Best Of" on the Blue Note label the definitive hard bop drummer has tracks taken from between 1958-1964. His band, the Jazz Messengers, changed line-ups throughout its history but arguably this period Messengers were the best. Certainly they were the most popular. With the likes of Lee Morgan or Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Bobby Timmons on piano and Wayne Shorter on tenor sax they feature the cream of the hard bop musicians. Included are the Blakey staples of "Moanin'", "Blues March" and "A Night In Tunisia". It's an ideal introduction to both Art Blakey and to hard bop. (For those who don't know what the term hard bop refers to then a listen to this album will tell you.) The music is exhilarating, powerful, catchy and driven, and make for a CD, which is pure excitement. It is an album, which demands to be played, although maybe not for those going on skiing holidays. --Phil Brett Fragt: Ukendt! |

Various Rambo: First Blood, Pt. 2Se flere produkter fra AmazonAs soon as John J Rambo has been rescued from prison, briefed and suited up, Elliot Goldsmith's score rarely lets up its enthusiastic charge. There's lots of spying and creeping through jungle vines, where various unique electronic effects rattle and hiss to suggest his snakelike stealth. For the majority of the running time however, a battery of percussion serves to propel the man-mountain Stallone along on his private revenge spree. One cue manages to sum up the elements perfectly in just under four minutes. "Escape From Torture" rolls out the once semi-tragic Rambo motif ("It's a Long Road" in First Blood) with all the heroism of Indiana Jones. There are punctuating stings every time one of his arrows strikes home. There are flutters of oriental woodwind to acknowledge the presence of Julia Nickson's Thai spy Co, who's along for the ride as an attempted love interest. There are also several snatches of the "Betrayed" version of the hero theme to add weight to Rambo's plight. This is a revised and expanded edition of the music that makes for a loud, emboldening adrenaline rush of a listening experience. -- Paul Tonks Fragt: Ukendt! |

Gerald Levert Gerald's WorldSe flere produkter fra AmazonIn a genre often overwhelmed with flash and flamboyance, Gerald Levert is a low-key love man. The son of O'Jays belter Eddie Levert, Gerald has served up a string of hits since the mid-80s, either with the trio LeVert ("Casanova"), the 90s supergroup LSG ("My Body"), or as a solo artist. Yet despite his sustained success, he remains under appreciated, which is a shame because what the gruff-voiced singer lacks in Q-ratings he makes up for with his rugged delivery of romantic songs. His first album since 1999's G is another collection of tough but tender R&B--grown-up, in focus but laced with just enough edgy attitude. The down-home, late-night "Soul Mate" and the unabashedly sentimental ballad "Made to Love Ya" find Gerald testifying passionately about love and life's ups and downs.
