Stranglers Peaches: the Very Best of the StranglersSe flere produkter fra AmazonOf all the first wave punk bands, the gruesomely mercurial Stranglers had the highest disregard for law and order and--as this melody-heavy collection serves to remind us--the highest tally of hits. Peaches--The Very Best Of packs 20 of them ("Hanging Around" was never released as a single but it was a hit for Hugh Cornwell's then girlfriend Hazel O'Connor) into one tin but even then there isn't enough room for either "Go Buddy Go" or "Nice in Nice". Famously short of fuse and occasionally sweary of mouth (at least in the early days) Guildford's self-styled "Meninblack" eventually moved away from the snarling, year-zero tenacity of "Something Better to Change" and "No More Heroes" to plough a sophisticated 1980s adult-rock furrow with the beguiling likes of "Always the Sun", "Skin Deep" and the odd-waltz of "Golden Brown". If anything, the non-chronological running order disproves the "they were punk and then all of a sudden and ever-so-conveniently they weren't anymore" notion which the Stranglers' detractors still persist on carping on about to this day. Things with the Stranglers were never that black and white (except on the band's third album, of course) and to listen to the bikini-ogling quasi-reggae laddishness of "Peaches" or to improve one's command of the French language on the extraordinarily sinister "La Folie" is to experience a band who were creatively flexible and adventurously out-of-step with the times, punk or no punk. Strangely, in a poacher-turned-gamekeeper kind of way, the Stranglers ended up doing charity work for the Metropolitan Police and haven't had a hit in yonks. Rihanna A Girl Like MeSe flere produkter fra AmazonWith A Girl Like Me, the Barbadian teen-queen Rihanna is looking to transfer all claims of royalty to the summertime pop charts. If anybody's going to rule them, she pretty much proclaims by way of "SOS," a song no less irresistible, intoxicating, and all-out cool than 2005's "Pon de Replay," off her debut, she's it. That's not to say this new disc is anything like its predecessor overall. Where Music of the Sun was mostly what its title suggests--a romp through an anglo-friendly island with no sunscreen required-- A Girl Like Me is more reflective and a little rueful; you get the sense it was crafted in part to show her range, with executive producer Jay-Z guiding her through it gracefully. "Unfaithful" is a noir-ish testing of the R&B waters, and it goes so well that Rihanna wastes no time skinny-dipping her way into the deep end--"Final Goodbye," "P.S. (I'm Still Not Over You)," and "A Million Miles Away" all betray juicy bits of Beyonce. Back in barefoot bikini-girl land, though--a territory that covers roughly half this disc--the party's still going strong. Rihanna gives dancehall legend Sean Paul a run for his money with the bouncing "Break It Off," and "We Ride" makes you want to roll down the windows and stick your head out the passenger side. Le Tigre Le TigreSe flere produkter fra AmazonLe Tigre's self-titled debut is a wonder of postmodern, lo-fi indie rock. Ex-Bikini Kill Riot Grrrl Kathleen Hanna has toned down the tuneless rage of her former band, and with the assistance of her artsy friends Johanna Fateman and Sadie Benning, has created an album of tuneful rage. Pop songs, no less. Casting a critical eye over the contemporary urban scene they inhabit, Le Tigre is packed with acerbic wit and referential wordplay shouted against a backdrop of guitars, sythesizers, beats, samples and, apparently, anything else to hand in the studios and bedrooms where it was recorded. "What's Yr Take On Cassavetes" starts off with a Shangri-Las-inspired spoken intro, before launching into a shouted debate about the merits of the film director ("Misogynist?/Genius?"); "Hot Topic" namedrops dozens of feminist icons; and "My My Metrocard" attacks the controversial policies of New York City mayor Giuliani ("He's such/A fucking jerk/Shut down/All the strip bars/Workfare/Doesn't work"). International Noise Conspiracy New MorningSe flere produkter fra AmazonThe CD booklet for A New Morning comes replete with a lengthy rant against the "'evil' capitalist appropriation of authentic cultural practices". The songs draw inspiration from the Toxteth Riots, Jean Genet, Milan Kundera, George Orwell and Bikini Kill. The album title was inspired by the Weathermen and Bob Dylan. Even their name is a call to arms. So it comes as no surprise that this fiercely polemic, intelligent agit-pop group from Umea, Sweden have a chequered history: from touring hidden underground clubs in China during 1999, to releasing a "too political" debut album (2000's Survival Sickness) supporting At the Drive In and Monster across the Western world. Their music has an edgy, rhythmic quality reminiscent of fellow counter-culture heroes Holland's Ex and the UK's Chumbawamba, and early punks such as the Clash and Au Pairs. Sometimes, it sounds a little outdated (the Redskins-style white soul of "Bigger Cages, Longer Chains") but music this inspirational never sounds old for long. -- Everett True Fragt: Ukendt! |
