Philadelphia Experiment The Philadelphia ExperimentSe flere produkter fra AmazonIn the 1940s, a time-travel experiment allegedly occurred in a Philadelphia naval yard. In The Philadelphia Experiment a fantastic combo of Philly musicians--pianist/keyboardist Uri Caine, bassist Christian McBride and drummer Ahmir Thompson--takes its name from that fictional event and combines fusion, mainstream jazz and R&B styles from the 1970s to today. Accompanied by guitar legend Pat Martino and trumpeter John Swana, Thompson lays down some tricky jungle beats on the title track, while the threesome venture into the avant-garde on "(re)Moved" and into Latin on "IIe Ife". The group revives Sun Ra's "Call for All Demons" as a funky instrumental and brilliantly revisits Marvin Gaye's "Trouble Man"; Elton John's "Philadelphia Freedom" is redone as a classical style McBride/Caine duet. The late saxophonist Grover Washington Jr was Philly's patron jazz saint, as evidenced by Caine's reverent solo piano rendition of Washington's hit "Mr Magic" and McBride's funky, overdubbed one-man electric bass version of "Just the Two of Us". This threesome reminds us that the City of Brotherly Love still swings. --Eugene Holley Jr Fragt: Ukendt! |

Lully - Symphonies, Ouvertures & Airs à jouerSe flere produkter fra AmazonWhat is it that makes French baroque music so unmistakable? You only have to listen to a minute or two of this disc to recognise its nationality, even if guessing the composer is more difficult. Perhaps it's the instrumental colour, as many-hued as the finest embroidered cloth, perhaps it's the juxtaposition of the most stately overtures--full of brass flourishes and dignified pomp--with the liveliest dance movements. Indeed, so French is this music in style, that it's of little consequence that Lully was actually Italian-born (though French trained). These three suites were all composed for the court of Louis XIV, a great patron of the arts and in his time an enthusiastic dancer. Le divertissement royal is as gilded and magnificently over-the-top as the Versailles festivities it was designed to celebrate (just sample the magnificent trumpets in track 11) while Le bourgeois gentilhomme, was Lully's most spectacular collaboration with Molire in a form that combined music and drama (sample the Turkish ceremony in track 4 or track 8, a ceremonial and gracious end to the suite). The suite from the opera Alceste makes a fittingly rich finale, ranging wide from the dramatic possibilities of "Echos" (track 23) to the overcast "La pompe funbre". The playing from Jordi Savall and his band is terrific: vivid, perfectly drilled and endlessly responsive to the theatrical possibilities of this effervescent music, a feature brought to the fore by the excellent recording. -- Harriet Smith Fragt: Ukendt! |

Bach - Goldberg VariationsSe flere produkter fra AmazonThe set of variations which Bach wrote for the young virtuoso Goldberg to play to their patron, the Russian ambassador, were intended to be heard either in groups or one at a time. Hewitt's sensitive and intelligent performance is particularly notable for its tact and sense of decorum. The use of piano instead of harpsichord brings a forensic clarity and a plangent sense of the music's emotional content without importing an inappropriate level of drama to the proceedings. She is particularly eloquent in some of the slower variations, such as the intense and private No. 25, but is also highly effective in the sprightlier dance movements, such as No. 19. -- Roz Kaveney Fragt: Ukendt! |

Anonymous 4 Legends of St NicholasSe flere produkter fra AmazonIf you're feeling jaded at the prospect of the usual holiday fare, Anonymous 4 has a truly sublime musical treat in store with their latest release. The contemporary world has turned Santa Claus into an icon of consumerist mania, but the historical figure from whom he ultimately derives was a uniquely inspiring religious figure to medieval Europeans. Anonymous 4 has culled together music from the liturgy of the hours and other sources originally produced to celebrate the legends associated with the fourth-century St. Nicholas, who was considered the patron of sailors, unmarried women, Russia, and--ironically--merchants. As with their earlier Christmas celebration, On Yoolis Night, the quartet ethereally blends their seamless, unaccompanied vocals in this collection of chants, hymns and readings recounting the saint's life and miracles on behalf of those in need. In addition to Latin settings, the programme includes one of the oldest known English-language hymns ("Sainte nicholaes", by a contemporary of Hildegard) and a number of verse-refrain pieces thought to inspire dancing in church. Most of the musical material involves simple unilinear trails of chant, which the ensemble spins out with their trademark unanimous purity of tone. Elsewhere, as in the spiralling eddies of "Novus presul prodiit", their suave harmonies glint like a sudden shaft of light through stained glass. And it is all captured in a warm, ambient church acoustic that is balm for modern ears. -- Thomas May Fragt: Ukendt! |

Beethoven - Missa SolemnisSe flere produkter fra AmazonBeethoven conceived this piece for a liturgical ceremony--the elevation of his friend and patron Archduke Rudolf to high ecclesiastical office--but in the end delivered the music several years late. During that time, the piece had grown beyond the limitations of an actual service and become something else entirely. Like Bach's B-minor Mass, Beethoven's Missa Solemnis is one of the most gigantic settings of the text in existence, and one of the most difficult choral works ever for the singers. Nikolaus Harnoncourt's performance seems to thrive on the challenge. He directs an exciting and very human interpretation that's sung with impressive fervor and played to the hilt. This is the real McCoy. --David Hurwitz Fragt: Ukendt! |

Various Artists Return of the Grievous Angel: A Tribute to Gram ParsonsSe flere produkter fra AmazonThe gentle hand of Emmylou Harris guides this tribute to ill-fated country-rock avatar Gram Parsons, which goes a long way toward explaining why this star-studded salute avoids the pitfalls that befall many such projects. Harris got her start harmonizing with the patron saint of alt country, contributing mightily to Parsons's two early 1970s solo albums and reviving selections from his small, but indispensable, oeuvre throughout her career. She has a vested interest in finding a true connection between her former benefactor and this cast of Parsons partisans. Here she bands together a flock of followers who range from obvious offspring (Wilco, Gillian Welch, Whiskeytown) to not-so-evident disciples (Beck, the Pretenders, Sheryl Crow). Parsons's partner in the Flying Burrito Brothers, Chris Hillman, teams with Steve Earle on "High Fashion Queen," and David Crosby (like Parsons and Hillman, an ex-Byrd) joins Lucinda Williams on "Return of the Grievous Angel." Harris harmonizes with Beck on "Sin City" and shares the mic with Crow on "Juanita," one of the collection's highlights. Ultimately, Harris has assembled a homage that would've pleased her old mentor. --Steven Stolder Fragt: Ukendt! |

Smog Wild LoveSe flere produkter fra AmazonThough it's not widely known, guys like Bill "Smog" Callahan (and Beck, and Lou Barlow, and Daniel Johnston) who've made an art out of sitting in their basements and cranking out song after song fragment on a four-track tape recorder, have an unlikely patron saint, someone who represents everything they'd want to be if they had prolific creativity, the stamina of a perfectionist, and access to big time home studio equipment. His name used to be Prince, and he's the monarch of do-it-yourself recording. That's what makes "Prince Alone in the Studio," from Smog's new record Wild Love, an indie classic of epic proportions. Typically Smog-like in its dark humor, with psychedelic effects and cello, the majestic dirge sums up the passion that drives helpless low-fi heads to tape themselves relentlessly, its lyrics conveying the loneliness, grueling discipline, and magical satisfaction of artistic creation as well as any song in memory can. If Prince is royalty, Callahan is his court poet. While "Prince Alone" stands as Wild Love's triumph, the rest of Smog's folksy krautrock stays in step with the concise "Bathroom Floor" and "Sweet Smog Children," which end at the first sign of tiring, and with the sardonic, melodic "Be Hit" and "Goldfish Bowl." Wild Love is Callahan at his bleakest, and the no-longer-low-fi Smog at it's most accessible. It's also Drag City (home to similarly minded bands like Silver Jews, Gastr del Sol, and Red Krayola) at its best. --Roni Sarig Fragt: Ukendt! |
