Kittie OracleSe flere produkter fra AmazonBidding to become new rock goddesses, or at least to surpass their gold-rated debut, Spit, Canadians Kittie have spared no effort or expense on their second album. With Oracle produced by Garth Richardson (Rage Against the Machine, Red Hot Chilli Peppers) and mixed by Randy Staub (Metallica, Bon Jovi), you'd expect it to be classy and, production-wise at least. It is. Guitarist/vocalist Morgan Lander's voice slips easily from a Dani Filth shriek, though a Layne Staley moan, all the way to Kim Wilde sweetness, often in the same song. Her riffs are staccato and extremely simple, but do occasionally attain a complexity and severity that explain why Kittie have been compared to Slayer. There's a neat cover of Pink Floyd's "Run Like Hell", too, which, though it lacks the advanced paranoia of Roger Waters' original (what doesn't?), is still laudably disrespectful. Kittie claim to be an "honest" metal band and they are clearly true to themselves. Sadly, as teenagers stepping from high school onto the tour bus, this makes them, for the most part, predictable and uninspiring,. Once life has dealt them a few hefty blows to the head and heart, they might well approach the goth-rock torment of Trent Reznor (evidently one of their heroes), and the rancour and wildness of Louise Post's contributions to Veruca Salt--still the finest female rock band of recent times. --Dominic Wills Fragt: Ukendt! |

Zombies Live at the Bloomsbury Theatre LondonSe flere produkter fra AmazonTheir Odessey and Oracle is considered a pop classic, but unfortunately the Zombies had disbanded by the record's 1968 release. Four decades later, eternal versions of that album's "This Will Be Our Year," "A Rose for Emily," "Beechwood Park," "Care of Cell 44," and "Time of the Season" make this 25-song live reunion of founding members Colin Blunstone and Rod Argent worth the effort. Though no other Zombie was aboard for the 2004 project (including underrated guitarist/vocalist Chris White), Argent's burning keyboards, Blunstone's inimitable voice, and skilled backing musicians assure that the entire band receives its due, particularly on the Odessey selections and nuggets from the singles collection, including Argent's "Tell Her No" and "Indication," Blunstone's "Just Out of Reach," and White's "I Love You." The harmonic backing vocals that littered the Zombies catalog are astoundingly intact, with only the occasional ramble into Argent's eponymous post-Zombies band (remember "Hold Your Head Up"?) left to clutter the sequencing. (A 16-song DVD of performances from the Bloomsbury Theatre show is also available, including multiple camera angles, immaculate sound, and four of the CD's five Odessey and Oracle numbers.) --Scott Holter Fragt: Ukendt! |

Michael Hedges TorchedSe flere produkter fra AmazonTorched is the album Michael Hedges was reputedly working on when he was tragically taken from us in a car wreck in November 1997. It reveals Hedges exploring his fervent desire to be a singer/songwriter, rather than the virtuoso guitarist who influenced a generation of string-pickers. Hedges played the whole guitar, not just the strings, turning it into a tribal orchestra that rendered his gorgeous and often quirky melodies. That Hedges is rarely heard on Torched. Instead Hedges's vocal side prevails. Torched is a scattered collection of nearly completed songs and rough tracks, all highlighting his spiritual search and romantic yearnings. As a singer/songwriter, Hedges was influenced by the 1960s and '70s Jackson Browne-James Taylor axis of earnest proclamations. He's even joined by '60s veterans David Crosby and Graham Nash, who added their harmonies to "Spring Buds" after Hedges passed. On the title track, he sings of spiritual transformation by fire, adding some distorted fuzz guitar to scorched effect. On "Promised Land" he waxes biblical. There are a few instrumentals as well, including "Fusion of the Five Elements," an early, triple-speed demo for the song that wound up as the title track to Oracle, Hedges's last official album. Other pieces like "Dream Beach," "Arrowhead," and "Ursa Major" would have fit comfortably on Oracle with their wistful melodies and arrangements that have Hedges playing flutes, percussion, and keyboards in addition to guitar. Posthumous albums are always problematic. We'll never know if Hedges actually wanted these tracks to be released, and over all the vocal songs don't match his more carefully articulated Road to Return vocal album from a few years back. With Torched we're left with embers from a musician who usually gave us bonfires of brilliance. --John Diliberto Fragt: Ukendt! |
