Rothko A Continual Search for OriginsSe flere produkter fra AmazonA Continual Search for Origins sees Rothko continuing to search out some truly great music. Mark Beazley's band have produced some of the most compelling music on the post-rock scene. Their three bass guitar formula somehow managed against all expectations not to hamstring their sound and albums like Forty Years to Find a Voice and In the Pulse of an Artery (produced by Simon Raymonde of Cocteau Twins fame) had an artistry, integrity and sheer listenability rarely found in this sector of music's avant garde. But Beazley is not one to rest on his laurels and, after parting amicably with his fellow bassists, he has got a band together which is essentially him and the vastly underrated Delicate Awol. The bass is ever present on Origins, as you would expect, and good use is made of Caroline Ross's flute. The album meanders a little after the opening female vocal track, found-sounds of crowds and rain melding with the bass, but quietly and in a beautifully unrushed way "Memories of Zurich" lead us to the central, astonishing, "I Sense You Fading Away" when in comes Jo Wright's trumpet which works so wonderfully (and which Rothko should definitely use more of) and where Beazley and Delicate Awol actually rock out. Better than cake. --Mark Thwaite Fragt: Ukendt! |

Bob Dylan Basement TapesSe flere produkter fra AmazonThe Basement Tapes can be heard as a manifesto for the 1990s underlying Americana agenda or as the greatest album never intended for commercial release. Homegrown 1967 recordings taped in the Band's fabled Big Pink hermitage in Saugerties, New York, many of the 24 songs resonated across American and English rock and folk long before their belated 1975 release, through studio interpretations by the Byrds, Fairport Convention, Manfred Mann, Peter, Paul & Mary, and numerous other acolytes, as well as through myriad unauthorised bootlegs. Good as the covers were, Dylan and the Band rolled their own with an extraordinary coherence that sounds only more authentic in these rough-hewn, intimate, always musical performances, which dovetail with Dylan's stark John Wesley Harding and the Band's stunning debut, Music from Big Pink as well as the presciently lo-fi The Band. At a time when most rock culture was entranced with its post-atomic origins, these songs sounded timeless, plunging into pre-industrial folk, turn of the (20th) century barrelhouse and blues, and crackling, vintage rock and roll excursions with offhand verve and a thrilling disregard for what was hip. Time has only reinforced their visionary power. -- Sam Sutherland Fragt: Ukendt! |

Sting The Journey & The Labyrinth - The Music Of John DowlandSe flere produkter fra AmazonRecorded at St. Luke's Cathedral in London, The Journey and the Labyrinth continues Sting and lute player Edin Karamazov's exploration of the music of John Dowland. The bulk of this material first appeared on 2006's Songs from the Labyrinth. Performed live and placed in a setting concurrent with the life of the 16th-century composer, the songs feel tied to their origins in profound ways. The grand room's ambiance is made apparent with the reverberating applause at the close of each selection. The closing two numbers show how this 400-year-old music has aspects very much in sync with relatively contemporary works. Both Robert Johnson's "Hellhound on My Trail" and Sting's own Police hit "Message in a Bottle" utilize crisply delineated melodies and spare but robust accompaniment. A DVD is included in the set, as well. Elegantly produced, it not only offers the live performance featured on the CD, but also provides Sting's own thoughtfully articulated connections to this still vibrantly romantic music. --David Greenberger Fragt: Ukendt! |

Susheela Raman Salt RainSe flere produkter fra AmazonIf the Beatles' "Norwegian Wood" is one of the classic examples of raga rock (emphasis on rock), fusing the ancient Indian modal pattern of raga with western rock & roll, Susheela Raman's remarkable debut Salt Rain could well be described as raga blues, (emphasis on raga). Trained to sing classical Indian music from childhood, the Londoner by birth began experimenting with the vocal style of American blues in adolescence, finding in her early 20s a richly exotic multi-textured sound. African rhythms, Asian-chordal dissonance and a deep womanly voice make for an intoxicating listening experience. Rather than run together as an ineffective mishmash of multicultural styles, Raman and her crew of musicians with origins in Romania, Greece, Spain and Kenya offer a sound like a masala-Gypsy-klezmer band with one foot in the delta. Familiar as the soaring voice of Joi, Raman is an intensely exciting new voice not in just world music, but in music as a whole. Salt Rain is both bountiful and devastatingly beautiful. -- Paige La Grone Fragt: Ukendt! |

Various Artists France - The Rough Guide to Paris Café MusicSe flere produkter fra AmazonCap at a rakish angle, Gitane hanging from the lip... As Guillaume Veillet's liner-note points out, Paris's most indigenous music may seem a trifle cosy, but The Rough Guide to Paris Café Music shows how wrong that prejudice is. Its origins may lie in the Auvergne, whose musicians played the smallpipes, but the biggest influence which fed into it came from Italy, whose "organetto" tradition is traced in Nascente's Bar Italia; the other big influence came from the gypsy world. The bal musette café ballroom was the melting-pot where the smallpipes gave way to the accordion and stars began to emerge. Emile Vacher and Charles Peguri were the founding fathers of this tradition, and they're both present on this entrancing new Rough Guide. We also hear Jean Corti, who played in a military brothel in the 1940s, and the drug-addicted Frehel, whose smoky tones are the authentic sound of the 1920s. The variety of styles in these 25 tracks is dazzling, with hot jazz alternating with modern cool and Django Reinhardt's son Babik beating up a lovely storm with the New Quintette du Hot Club de France. Meanwhile Edith Piaf sings a song called "L'Accordeoniste". And if you're hooked on this instrument, get hold of Wergo's new Global Accordion: Early Recordings, which is a marvellous cornucopia of vanished sounds. --Michael Church Fragt: Ukendt! |

Various Healing Music Project, Vol. 1Se flere produkter fra AmazonIt is a noble ambition: Blend science and sound to create audio experiences with the capacity to rejuvenate, calm and even heal. The notion has circulated for millennia, and its origins can be traced deep into Hindu and Judeo-Christian traditions (the latter with its account of David soothing a troubled King Saul with his harp, I Samuel 16:23). The Rosyln, NY-based Relaxation Company has based its existence on the concept and makes persuasive arguments for its theories in the well-reasoned liner notes that accompany its handsomely packaged recordings. This disc makes a persuasive audio argument as well, offering a sampler of diverse music from two venerable New Age artists, German-born keyboardist Deuter and zither whiz Laraaji, and four musician/researchers. Ranging from Deuter's opening, 11-minute excursion into stillness for flute and synthesiser ("Island in the Sun") to an intriguing exercise ("Move") on Tibetan bowls, tabla and other percussion by Barry Bernstein, a one-time colleague of Mickey Hart's, the music stands well on its own apart from its medicinal claims. Does it really work? Let yourself get lost in the vocal ether concocted by Silvia Nakkach, whose speciality is exploring the space that connects notes (known as "meend" in North Indian music) and decide for yourself. The liner notes include suggestions for employing the music in self-guided meditations. -- Terry Wood Fragt: Ukendt! |

Maurice Jarre The Essential Maurice Jarre Film Music CollectionSe flere produkter fra AmazonAmong the others to have received this compilation treatment from Silva Screen ( Goldsmith, Horner, Williams, Rózsa, Herrmann, James Bond), Jarre's distinguishes itself by virtue of the man's diversity. You simply cannot compare the alien religious chorale from Enemy Mine with the heartstring tugging of Ghost. The composer certainly has a recognisable style--one that stems from his percussionist origins. But it's always the wealth of melody that impresses. As the album title acknowledges, we adore his Doctor Zhivago theme for Lara, so too Lawrence's desert trek. The point of this collection (put together by a fan of the composer) is to capitalise on the general familiarity of the "big names", and enthral with lesser-known titles such as The Fixer, El Condor, Red Sun and Villa Rides. Credit is given across a couple of orchestras for the re-recordings, but both have captured the energy and spirit of the composer very well. -- Paul Tonks Fragt: Ukendt! |

Pat Metheny As Falls Wichita, So Falls Wichita FallsSe flere produkter fra AmazonGuitarist Pat Metheny and his long-time keyboard collaborator/alter ego Lyle Mays saw in their rural American roots a mystical connection to an entire world of sounds, and with As Falls Wichita, So Falls Wichita Falls, they began the process of fashioning an idiomatic folk expression all their own. With the help of master percussionist Nana Vasconcelos, they create a whistlestop tour of musical outposts on the extended title track that is at once Gothic and atmospheric in the manner of Weather Report, bucolic and harmonious like the Byrds, with echoes of small-towns, strip malls and lonely railyards, over expanses of wide-open space that reflect their familial origins and countless miles wandering the interstate on a string of college-town one-nighters. In the four square major modes of "Ozark" and "It's for You" you can hear the beige tinge of the American experience that melded with African-American music to give this nation it's musical depth and breadth, while "September Fifteenth" is a prayerful, ruminative reflection on the spirit of their romantic forebear, pianist Bill Evans. --Chip Stern Fragt: Ukendt! |

Original Soundtrack I Dreamed of Africa OstSe flere produkter fra AmazonKim Basinger's romance in the wild is very much about Nature's beauty. As a composer, Jarre is a natural to capture both a sense of the expansive landscapes and inner beauty of the woman. This album gives us very lengthy cues for a film score (none under six minutes, most over eight) that paint consistently broad musical images. The opening "Arrival In Africa" has the feel of a travelogue aboard a safari jeep, as rolling melodies peak and trough to the undulating scenery. This is punctuated by favourably recorded ethnic percussion ensembles; the effect is like passing swiftly through a village dance. The chirpy motif for Basinger keeps re-appearing after its introduction, but enjoys its most resplendent rendition in the truly joyous and uplifting finale of "Kuki's Determination". Jarre's score in-between suffers only minor interruption: there are two sourced tracks from Ayub Ogada featuring his Afrikaans vocals and light ensemble backing, and "Kel Kweyo" from Geoffrey Oryema, which sustains the geographic atmosphere just as well. The only real surprise is the segue midway through "Death and Misery" into Richard Strauss' "Im Abendrot". Fans of Jarre's percussionist origins will appreciate the furious set-piece outbursts earlier in the cue. --Paul Tonks Fragt: Ukendt! |

Oasis Be Here NowSe flere produkter fra AmazonIn retrospect, it's hard to see how Oasis could have possibly equalled the hype surrounding the release of this, their third album. Arriving as their popularity was at its peak, it's a confusing, faintly self-indulgent collection. The first single, the wryly-titled "D'You Know What I Mean?", had a monolithic sort of grandeur, taking Noel Gallagher's fondness for overdubbed, wall-of-sound guitars to some new peak, but also seemed a little over-extended--as did its follow-up, "All Around The World", a slab of Beatles-esque, sing-along pop that seemed to last longer than the entire White Album. Then again, it made a kind of sense: nothing if not mindful of rock tradition, Oasis's quest to be the World's Greatest Rock & Roll Band meant that they were obliged--like the Stones before them--to make their own mid-1970s album (albeit, two decades too late). And from its Caribbean origins, to its raucous, bloated, "cocained-out" sound, this is it: a triumph of arrogance over ambition. Maybe next time they'll go punk. --Andrew McGuire Fragt: Ukendt! |

Gwen Stefani The Sweet EscapeSe flere produkter fra AmazonGwen Stefani's second solo album, The Sweet Escape, finds the sassy blonde starlet moving even farther away from her ska-punk No Doubt origins. This time around, as apparent from the album cover alone, the focus is clearly on bling, not swing. Which would explain why her collaborators on The Sweet Escape are practically a who's-who of contemporary urban music producers: Akon (who also guests on the title track), Nellee Hooper and, of course, The Neptunes. Perhaps unsurprisingly, it's The Neptunes, with their playful pop sensibilities, who are responsible for some of the catchiest tracks here--"Orange County Girl", which is a SoCal version of "Jenny From the Block", the sultry and sparse "Yummy" (which features vocals by Pharrell) and the Sound of Music sampling first single "Wind It Up". The lesser known Swizz Beatz, meanwhile, have somehow produced Stefani's most Neptunes-sounding track with "Now That You Got It". The most surprising track, considering the source, is "Early Winter", a straightforward rock ballad produced not by her longtime No Doubt collaborator Tony Kamal, but by slick R&B specialist Hooper. Fans looking for a return to Stefani's indie roots may find this album a bit of a shock, but The Sweet Escape should find a home in both dancefloors and the pop charts. --Ted Kord Fragt: Ukendt! |

Rimsky-Korsakov: Scheherazade; Capriccio Espagnol; Russian Easter OvertureSe flere produkter fra AmazonDistinguished recordings of Rimsky-Korsakov's gorgeous, immensely colourful symphonic suite after The Arabian Nights are legion, with a veritable phalanx of top-ranking stereo contenders at mid-price or below, including Fritz Reiner (RCA), Pierre Monteux (Belart), Seiji Ozawa (DG Classikon), Leopold Stokowski (RCA), Herbert von Karajan (DG Galleria) and Sir Thomas Beecham (EMI Great Recordings of the Century). To their number must be added Kirill Kondrashin, whose magnificent 1980 version with the incomparably eloquent Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam combines heaps of story-telling flair, thrusting cogency and bewitching sensuousness to unforgettable effect. Just the merest whisper of background hiss betrays the recording's analogue origins, but the sound emanating from your speakers will blow most the digital opposition out of the water in its sumptuous glow and riveting sense of spectacle. And that's not all: Igor Markevitch directs the same band in a powerfully clangorous rendering of the by turns solemn and exultant Russian Easter Festival Overture, switching to the London Symphony Orchestra (at the very peak of its form) for a superb account of the exuberant Capriccio espagnol. Marvellous value. -- Andrew Achenbach Fragt: Ukendt! |

Cheb Mami DellaliSe flere produkter fra AmazonCheb Mami, leading exponent of Algeria's "rai" music, goes for broke on Dellali. Paralleling the origins of the Western world's early rock & roll, punk and hip-hop (as well as the blues and reggae), rai originated in Algeria's underclass as home-grown recreational art. The personal became political, and as its popularity (and controversy) grew, the music--marked by raw, provocative and wilful vocals--became a beautifully uplifting and rebellious expression, a flag claimed and raised high by Algeria's young. One of the form's earliest innovators, Cheb Mami fled to Paris where he has for two decades been a rising star, blending rai with dance, hip-hop, funk and rock, in a string of ever-more accessible recordings. His international calling card, however, was backing Sting on "Desert Rose". Sinewy, sophisticated and genre-expansive, Dellali features Mami's barbed-wire vocals cutting through multi-layered fields of wild and orchestral violin, accordion, cello, oud and drums. Sting backs Mami on a track, and late Nashville sensation Chet Atkins is on guitar on backing vocals. But the most shimmering and soulful moments come when the London Community Gospel Choir turn Dellali into a grandiose explosion of nearly perfect sound. --Paige La Grone Fragt: Ukendt! |
