ABBC Tete a TeteSe flere produkter fra AmazonSpaghetti western-inflected, Tucson-based outfit Calexico have already proved themselves fearless explorers of the New Western frontier. On Tête à Tête, the group's mainstays Joey Burns and Joey Convertino give their ingenuity and stylistic curiosity fresh impetus by teaming up with two French friends recently relocated to Tucson, Naim Amor and Thomas Belhom. The match is immediately enticing--the Gallic flavour of the accordion instrumental "Valse de Heures" an edifying contrast to the lonesome dustbowl yearning of "The Wrestler's Masque" and "Le Savon Se Dissout dans la Rigole". As newcomers to the dusty desert life that inspires so much of Convertino and Burns's music, Amor and Belhorn bring an added sense of awe and moody grandeur to songs like "Gilbert" and the haunting, classically inspired "Orange Trees In The Yard". A collection of allusive but bewitching pieces, Tête à Tête doesn't scream out for attention, but rest assured its measured beauty and subtle shadings offer up increasing riches with each listen. -- Gavin Martin Inkl. fragt: Ukendt |

Will Oldham Master and EveryoneSe flere produkter fra AmazonA slippery character, Will Oldham. Just when it seems we're beginning to understand his subversive ways with country and folk, he'll evade categorisation once again. So it is with Master and Everyone, the third album Oldham's recorded as Bonnie "Prince" Billy, having spent most of the 90s playing as Palace. Oldham made his name with a perverse streak, a quavering voice and a taste for storytelling that could be broadly termed hillbilly gothic. Master and Everyone, however, is a steady and intimate affair in which he takes on a more conventionally lovelorn persona. It's hard to say whether this directness equals honesty, given that Oldham's tricksy games with character are a match for those of Dylan at his most duplicitous. Still, Master and Everyoneis an uncommonly engaging album. The musical settings are as minimal as anything Oldham's tried since 1994's Palace Brothers. But there's a certain warmth and quiet confidence that's new, aided by the presence of various bits of Lambchop (including producer/ambient guitarist Mark Nevers) as Oldham's latest back-up band. And, in spite of Oldham claiming he left off a few songs for fear people would like them too much, "The Way", "Wolf among Wolves" and the title track are among the strongest this curmudgeonly genius has ever released. He's still untrustworthy, still spellbinding. -- John Mulvey Inkl. fragt: Ukendt |

Oceansize Effloresce [VINYL]Se flere produkter fra AmazonAs if in answer to the current mania for scrappy garage rock, Manchester's Oceansize deliver a debut album of an immensity to match their name with Effloresce. Immediately, they set out their store, the opening instrumental "I Am the Morning" rising from a pretty tinkling to a quite awesome three-guitar prog-rock crescendo. And then it gets bigger, the multi-faceted "Catalyst" raising the tension with numerous false starts before taking off for real. The following "One Day All This Could Be Yours" is another mind-blitz, its muted, very English harmonies recalling Pink Floyd, while the constantly mutating, 10-minute "Massive Bereavement", with backing vocals courtesy of Claire Lemmon from the criminally under-rated Sidi Bou Said, approaches the spacey sci-fi and crunching metallics of prime-era King Crimson. Amazingly, its power is matched by two other caustic monsters, "You Wish" and "Saturday Morning Breakfast Show". Though Effloresce is not wholly about the gradual construction of complex space-rock freak-outs--the soft, bassy "Rinsed" and moody piano piece "Unravel" do change the mood--at 75 minutes, it does become a tad indigestible. Then again, any band that figures Andrew Eldritch so prominently in their "thank you" list is bound to go over-the-top. Having climbed so high so quickly, it'll be fascinating to see where Oceansize could possibly go next. --Dominic Wills Inkl. fragt: Ukendt |

Motorhead HammeredSe flere produkter fra AmazonMotorhead should really be over. Late 70s hardcore pioneers, their sound has been entirely superseded by several generations of rockers. Yet somehow, over a quarter of a century since their inception, they still seem to matter. And Hammered matters, despite some desperately poor moments. The opening "Walk a Crooked Mile" is utterly wretched. Lyrically soft, musically bog-standard, with a miserable attempt at melody, and further burdened by a weakly flashy guitar solo, it's possibly Motorhead's worst ever. "Down the Line" isn't much better, nor is "Brave New World", despite opening with a drum attack recalling Phil Taylor. Indeed, the album doesn't really get going till track six, "Shut Your Mouth", when suddenly urgency enters Lemmy's vocal, continuing on into "Kill the World", featuring an appropriately cruel riff and a typically explosive chorus ("You got to move / Momma didn't raise no fools"). There's an excellent conclusion too. "Red Raw" possesses a bassline of "Ace of Spades" ferocity, while "Serial Killer" sees Lemmy recite a Poe/Clive Barker-influenced poem, with a little help from wrestling star Triple H. Hammered's main problems are inconsistent songwriting and guitarist Phil Campbell's failure to match the wailing wildness of Fast Eddie Clarke. He will have to try harder, or Motorhead won't matter for much longer. --Dominic Wills Inkl. fragt: Ukendt |

Everything But The Girl The Best of Everything But the GirlSe flere produkter fra AmazonEverything but the Girl (Ben Watt and ex-Marine Girl Tracey Thorn) have gone through two distinct phases in their career--they spent most of it as an acoustic, folky duo with some occasional lounge accompaniment, but after a Todd Terry remix of Amplified Heart's "Missing", they veered toward the dance floor. "Best of" tries to encapsulate all of that in 15 tracks and while it brings together many of the essential songs--the remix of "Missing", "Apron Strings", "Rollercoaster", "I Don't Want To Talk About It" and even Thorn's guest vocal on Massive Attack's "Protection"--it also has a lot of holes. There are only 10 tracks from EBTG's entire nine album pre-remix career and none that feature Watt as vocalist; also missing is Thorn's guest slot on the Style Council's "Paris Match" (from Café Bleu). As a slightly lopsided introduction to EBTG, this collection is fine but you might do better buying a few albums instead (start with Amplified Heart, Idlewild, and Walking Wounded). --Randy Silver Inkl. fragt: Ukendt |

Dears No Cities LeftSe flere produkter fra AmazonNo Cities Left, the debut album from Montreal, Canada's The Dears, confirms it's not just American acts like Interpol and The Killers who currently harbour a guilty crush on the luminous charms of British indie. Such Anglophilic sentiments appear to be mostly courtesy of bandleader Murray Lightburn, whose warm, swoonworthy vocal delivery is pitched somewhere between the warm croon of Morrissey and Damon Albarn caught at his most nakedly earnest. But it would be unfair to dismiss "Lost in the Plot" or "Expect the Worst/'Cos She's A Tourist" on the basis of geography alone, particularly as so often, they threaten to match - and occasionally overwhelm - the originals from which they draw inspiration. An extended line-up that includes a three-piece horn section, The Brebeuf Brass, as well as violin, sax, and double bass brings an fullness of sound to songs like "Pinned Together, Falling Apart"--and Lightburn's refreshingly irony-free delivery leads to some truly lump-in-throat moments: "I have never cried in anybody's arms," he sings on "The Death Of All The Romance", "The way I have often cried in yours." --Louis Pattison Inkl. fragt: Ukendt |

Philip Glass Glass-KoyaanisqatsiSe flere produkter fra AmazonFifteen years after its initial release, Philip Glass's score to Godfrey Reggio's film Koyaanisqatsi is still as timeless as it was meant to be. Glass's epic score, virtually the only sound in this non-narrative movie, accompanied an exhilarating, wordless meditation of images ranging from expansive, slow-motion landscapes to whirling-dervish city scenes shot using time-lapse techniques. Glass's music was a perfect match. The opening chant is still unlike anything Glass has composed, a Tibetan monk operatic growl that set up the foreboding sense of loss the film engenders. Most of the score, however, casts Glass's minimalist themes in orchestral expanses. Bass strings troll the bottom while flutes draw circles in the air. On "The Grid", manic keyboards drive into the night, pounding out the cyclical refrains that are a Glass trademark. When Koyaanisqatsi came out, it seemed opulent with its orchestral forces, but always at the centre were the keyboards, reeds, and voice that are Glass's characteristic sound. Koyaanisqatsi means "life out of balance", but Glass's remarkably austere score remains perfectly poised. This newly re-recorded edition adds nearly 30 minutes to the previous CD release with two previously unissued tracks and extended versions of "The Grid" and "Prophecies", the two signpost works of the film. --John Diliberto Inkl. fragt: Ukendt |

Kronos Qt Mansell - Requiem for a DreamSe flere produkter fra AmazonMansell previously worked with director Darren Aronofsky on Pi where the electronica was powerfully raw. Enlisting the Kronos Quartet, this is proof of a far more intellectual process to create a through-scored piece. Both on screen and album, the music undergoes a perceivable development. Here it is given three sections ("Summer", "Fall" and "Winter"), and therefore attempts an almost symphonic form. "Summer Overture" introduces a repeatedly impressive central motif. The quartet excels in its sawing performance of it, and by the time of the first of two congas closing this initial seasonal section, you'll be prepared for the unexpected explosions of dissonance to follow. The final third ("Winter") puts a new motif through inventive stages of growth. From "Southern Hospitality" to "Meltdown" the sampled strings incessantly build in pitch until the desired unnerving effect has been well and truly achieved. This is music to match the most unshakeably nightmarish of dreams. -- Paul Tonks Inkl. fragt: Ukendt |

Original Soundtrack The Royal Tenenbaums [Us Import]Se flere produkter fra AmazonThe magical triad behind Rushmore's spunky, starry eyed soundtrack--music supervisor Randall Poster, composer Mark Mothersbaugh and director Wes Anderson--leaps forward a decade from that beloved soundtrack's 1960s gems, in the process adopting a more pensive feel for The Royal Tenenbaums' musical backdrop. It may lack the euphoric singalong feel of, say, Creation's "Makin' Time", but the rock and folk tracks here perfectly match the film's crumbling characters and their dilapidated relationships. The Ramones' "Judy is a Punk" is a burst of nostalgic rebellion but surely causes a sad twinge in light of Joey Ramone's untimely death in 2001; gloom-folker Nick Drake's "Fly" and Elliott Smith's excellently depressing "Needle in the Hay"--which is used to chilling effect during a wrist-slashing scene--further deepen the dark thread running through Tenenbaums. But those who prefer the sunny disposition of Rushmore will be thrilled by the calming concoctions of Mothersbaugh, who heralds the coming of a new scene with graceful woodwind/string parts ("Scrapping and Yelling") and playful sitar pieces ("Pagoda's Theme"). Throw in the Clash's squalling "Police and Thieves" and the Velvet Underground's petal-soft "Stephanie Says" and you've got another winning soundtrack from the film biz's most in-tune music lovers. Katie Melua Piece By PieceSe flere produkter fra AmazonPiece By Piece--the second album from Georgia-born chanteuse cum naturalised Brit, Katie Melua, and the successor to her multi-million selling Call Off The Search--begins teasingly with the soft-peddled "come hither" jazz flirtations of "Shy Boy" and concludes with the whispering philosophical torch song resignation of "I Do Believe In Love". The two songs represent opposite ends of the emotional spectrum--sultry and kittenish on the one hand, solitary and ruminative on the other--but they also offer clues that the cutesy, crazy, easy listening Melua of Mike Batt's mentorship may be gradually acceding to the full bloom of self-determined musical adulthood. Melua's songs are often the more fretful and organic, the ghostly title track and the lovely "I Cried for You" are especially recommended, while the bluesier numbers (particularly the cover of the classic "Blues In The Night") seem shoehorned-in gratuitously to match an anticipated demographic. Batt's contributions are melodic, memorably buoyant and childlike, the Chinese-flavoured "Nine Million Bicycles" and the naggingly catchy "Halfway Up The Hindu Kush" are both charming despite their naive, pseudo-ethnicity and currently offer, particularly when compared to something as ponderously wooly as "Spider's Web", a necessary fun counterbalance to Melua's burgeoning compositional skills. At this stage, Piece By Piece fits together nicely like a little jigsaw puzzle. And even if it didn't, Melua would still sound simply ambrosial singing from a washing machine repair manual. -- Kevin Maidment More to Explore See more music by Katie Melua Call off the Search (For Piano, Voice & Guitar) Call off the Search (CD + DVD) On The Road Again ~ Katie Melua (DVD) See all Katie Melua products Inkl. fragt: Ukendt |

Little Feat Waiting for ColumbusSe flere produkter fra AmazonFew rock concert documents can match this 1978 live album for sheer musicianship, or for its full-blooded representation of one of the best live bands ever. Little Feat's turbulent '70s pilgrimage had been studded with commercial detours when its second incarnation as a swampy, blues-rock sextet clicked musically, and these English and American dates, beautifully recorded by George Massenburg, capture the band in all its rowdy, precise glory. The late Lowell George's influence had been damped down in the studio, deferring to his bandmates' writing and singing, but Columbus is dominated by his gruff, lyrical vocal presence and the mercurial tang of his indelible slide guitar. With the Tower of Power Horns aboard to inject razor-sharp horn work, this romp through the Feat songbook of southern-fried rock represents a satisfying summation of the band's best works, every bit as engaging as their studio models. This is simmering, smart music measured by an honour roll of great songs with no lapses. The only caveat--and a minor one--is the deletion of two tracks to squeeze the original two LPs onto a single CD. --Sam Sutherland Inkl. fragt: Ukendt |

AC Acoustics Understanding MusicSe flere produkter fra AmazonThey've been dealt some harsh cards, but guitar-toting Glaswegian experimentalists AC Acoustics are ready to take anything that Lady Luck can throw at them. Their previous album, the triumphant Victory Parts, had its thunder comprehensively stolen by the meteoric rise of Placebo--a band by far their junior, but touting a similar take on their taut, androgynous angst-pop dynamic. How to capitalise on this sorry state of affairs? Why, magnanimously draft in Brian Molko to mewl backing vocals on the metallic robot-grunge caterwaul of "Crush", of course--and through a sly reworking of the Acoustics formula, piece together an album that's adventurous enough to leave him looking like a weak link. For while Understanding Music is a far less immediate, visceral listen than its predecessor, it's less a dilution, more an evolution; listen to the breathtaking "She Kills For Kicks", which evokes, by turns, the Aphex Twin, Labradford, and even Leonard Cohen. Let's hear Placebo match this. --Louis Pattison Inkl. fragt: Ukendt |

Krystian Zimerman The Cleveland Orchestra London Symphony Orchestra Pierre Boulez Ravel: Piano Concertos; Valses nobles et sentimentalesSe flere produkter fra AmazonFabulous pianism from Krystian Zimerman, scintillating in its poise, sparkle and wit, but with never a hint of self-regarding flashiness along the way. In the sublime slow movement of the G major concerto, Zimerman's songful liquidity comes close to the ideal (no-one has yet matched Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli's miraculous 1959 EMI account), and Pierre Boulez and the Cleveland Orchestra could not be more sympathetic collaborators. For the Left-hand Concerto, we move from Ohio to Watford and a rather more expansive acoustic. If the London Symphony Orchestra don't always quite match their American counterparts in tasteful refinement and dazzling co-ordination, the detail in Ravel's breathtakingly imaginative orchestral canvas is now fractionally clearer. Again, Zimerman and Boulez forge an imperious alliance, this music's unsettling seam of desperation and terror quarried with comprehensive insight. Sandwiched between the two main courses come the Valses nobles et sentimentales: featuring the Clevelanders again on lustrous form, these are amongst the most bracing and intoxicating of recent times. As for the concertos, you need really look no further than Zimerman and Boulez: they're a class act. --Andrew Achenbach Inkl. fragt: Ukendt |

Pat Metheny and Brad Mehldau QuartetSe flere produkter fra AmazonThe first recorded meeting of guitarist Pat Metheny and pianist Brad Mehldau, Metheny/Mehldau, was an intimate, almost chamber-like affair, albeit one with some heated improvisations. Quartet, their second meeting, finds them sounding like a stripped-down version of the Pat Metheny Group. But this is a leaner, looser band, with freewheeling support from Mehldau's trio of drummer Jeff Ballard and bassist Larry Grenadier on all but a couple of tracks. The guitarist and pianist are a good match for Metheny's dramatic and lyrical inclinations, seducing the more angular and cerebral Mehldau like teasing threads from a knot. Mehldau is a pianist of exploratory dimensions, and he gives himself free reign here. There's intimate, Jim Hall/Bill Evans-style duos like "Ring of Life" that you might expect, but also out-and-out free-form electric excursions like "Summer Day" that recall Metheny's 1980s work with Billy Higgins and Charlie Haden on Rejoicing. While maintaining a unified sound, Quartet is nevertheless an album of contrasts, as Metheny drives into his synth guitar on "Legend," tossing in a heavy-metal bridge, but also goes a bit pastoral and medieval on "Ahmid-6," strumming what sounds like a harp-guitar, although it could be his guitar-synth. With deeply empathetic playing and a broad stylistic palette, Quartet never wears thin. --John Diliberto Inkl. fragt: Ukendt |

Nickel Creek This SideSe flere produkter fra AmazonWhereas Nickel Creek's debut album established the young California trio at the progressive vanguard of traditional bluegrass, the ambitious, risky follow-up This Side finds their acoustic artistry straying far afield. Mandolin player Chris Thile and the Watkins siblings--guitarist Sean and fiddler Sara--continue to impress with their intuitive instrumental interplay and lush vocal harmonies. Sean Watkins's title cut achieves the sprightliest blend of traditional bluegrass instrumentation and contemporary pop craft, while the ruminative melancholy of "Hanging by a Thread" and "Green and Gray" sound as though Thile has been listening to a lot of Elliott Smith (and reading the published poetry of Jewel). The album also features Pavement's "Spit on a Stranger", Carrie Newcomer's "Should've Known Better" and the traditional ballad "House Carpenter". However, much of the collection's original material lacks the maturity to match the trio's musical gifts, as songs incorporating influences ranging from neo-psychedelia to alt pop often suffer from self-consciousness. Kindred-spirit producer Alison Krauss plainly gave the project a long leash, and the results can be viewed as either sophomore slump or creative growth spurt--or perhaps both. --Don McLeese Inkl. fragt: Ukendt |

Jazzy M 7 Live Vol.4: Mixed By Jazzy MSe flere produkter fra AmazonJazzy M, the man behind the 7 Live was the first DJ in the UK to play house music on the radio. His Jackin' Zone show on pirate LWR was an early focus for the new sound. Darren Emerson wrote Jazzy a letter when the former Underworld member was still a schoolboy. Jazzy M's about as vintage as UK house is going to get although his sound is resolutely US-oriented with screaming disco divas and hotter, low-slung NY dubs. This mix was recorded live in one-take with no re-edits or effects. There are times when it sounds a bit random but the last 35 minutes are extraordinary as Jazzy starts to layer, tease and play with the records. Suddenly the basslines sound extra hot and dirty and the beats appear to kick in all the right (and also unexpectedly delightful places)--in regular parlance Jazzy "goes off". There are some well known tunes such as Chocolate Puma's panting "I Wannna Be U", although the best tracks are lesser-known dubs such as Joeski and Onionz' "Rods Groove" which easily match the best of Basement Jaxx for zap and sass. This is, if nothing else, worth checking for that second-half when Jazzy warms up and sends all his tunes into some mad spiral of spaced-out disco. -- Tony Marcus Inkl. fragt: Ukendt |

Sorabji: Opus clavicembalisticumSe flere produkter fra AmazonA work with a name like this can only be unusual. The opus in question is a three-part solo piano epic, lasting a shade under four hours and of a complexity to match. Combine an all-night raga sequence with Bach's Art of Fugue and you're getting close. Is it worth the listen? Yes, if you want to give your heart and mind--not just your brain--a real workout. For all his outsize demands, Sorabji was a front-rank pianist, who understood technique as a physical end to spiritual means. There are stretches of manic complexity here, but also passages of real poetry: try the lengthy "Interludium primum" which opens Part 2, or many of the 81(!) variations which follow the magisterial "Passacaglia" in Part 3. It's music which cries out for transcendental virtuosity, and Geoffrey Douglas Madge gives it just that. He gave four performances over six years and this Chicago one from 1983 assumed mythic status among those who heard it. Remastered for CD release, it is awe-inspiring in its grasp of what's gone into this music: the audience clearly living it with the pianist every step of the way. Explosions In The Sky All of a Sudden I Miss EveryoneSe flere produkter fra AmazonSometimes Explosions in the Sky start with a whisper and end with a scream, but on "Birth and Death of the Day", they begin with a scream and proceed into a symphonic odyssey that Aaron Copland might have composed if he'd played electric guitar. Like Copland, EITS are cinematic, but with more kinetic drive than any film--except maybe Koyaanisqatsi--could match. Compositions like "It's Natural to Be Afraid" take you on epic journeys that roar like a Harley Davidson one minute and slip into taut contemplation the next, using the slow-tension build that EITS have perfected. All of a Sudden I Miss Everyone was produced by John Congleton, who has worked with lo-fi groups like the Roots and the Mountain Goats. That might explain why the album lacks the atmosphere of EITS's monumental The Earth Is Not a Cold Dead Place and their Friday Night Lights soundtrack. Instead, they rely even more on the arc of their compositions and the integral twin lead guitar lines that never solo but always drive the songs. They can shift from power-chord aggression to the sound of plucked mandolins in an instant. This is progressive rock for people who weren't even born when prog reigned supreme. It's the sound of King Crimson, transmuted through punk and grunge aesthetics. --John Diliberto Inkl. fragt: Ukendt |

Handel: Ombra mai fuSe flere produkter fra AmazonAndreas Scholl is without doubt one of the most extraordinary singers to have exploded into public prominence within recent years. With some counter-tenors, it sometimes feels as if one is listening out of duty, or out of respect to "authentic" practice--with Scholl, as with all truly great singers, you listen because you can't stop. His voice is crystal pure throughout its range, and perfectly controlled by a remarkable technique. But more than that, he performs with such engaging warmth that whether he is being romantic, angry or lachrymose he is always totally convincing. On this disc of opera arias by Handel, he gives the impression that the composer had him in mind when he wrote them, so completely does he get under the skin of each one. In addition to performing the classics of the counter-tenor repertoire, such as "Verdi prati" and "Ombra mai fu", he also explores some unfamiliar territory with a delicious aria from the little-known Admeto. He is accompanied by the Akademie für Alte Music, who match his phrasing with almost shocking accuracy and support him with effortless ease. -- Warwick Thompson Inkl. fragt: Ukendt |

The B-52's Planet ClaireSe flere produkter fra AmazonWhen they emerged in 1979 with their dayglo colours and two-foot high beehive hairdos, the B-52s looked like a mondo trash B-movie and they had music to match. This compilation includes a generous helping of tracks from their classic eponymous debut; from the funky rhythmic rush of "Planet Claire" to the effervescent surf garage and piercing girl vocals of "Rock Lobster" and "6060-842". Tracks from later albums such as 1982's Mesopotamia, however, show them hitting a creative dip. "Loveland" and "Nip It In The Bud", for instance, are low-key and less vibrant than their early material. Not surprising, considering that their guitarist Ricky Wilson was to die of an AIDS-related illness in 1985. By the late 1980s they'd recovered enough to release upbeat songs like "Wig" and "Girl From Ipanema Goes To Greenland", which, admirably enough, managed to sound like pastiche of pastiche.
