As R&B continues to dominate the charts, so the compilations keep on coming, each one crammed with more ex-top 10 singles than the last. Kiss compilations, however, aren¹t like the rest. They are part of a select group that delve that bit deeper than the previous month's hits. And the fifth Smooth Grooves double album to be amassed from the Kiss FM playlists and soul-packed vaults, like those before it, is blessed in equal measure with the best recent hits and smooth cuts that, while not selling by the bucketload are still incredible tunes. Of the big hitters, Craig David, Kelis, Jamelia, Honeyz, Missy Elliott, Q-Tip, Jay-z and the underwear-loving Sisqo and his "Thong Song" steal the show with their compilation friendly anthems. But it's the likes of Angie Stone's soulful "Lifestory", Chico Debarge's sensual "Give You What You Want", Me One's jazzily hip-hop "Old Fashioned" and the slave song groove of Erykah Badu's "Southern Girl" that set this collection apart as an essential groove selection, not just another pop cash-in. --Dan Gennoe

American popster Michael Shelley has taken a while to break into the UK, which is surprising--his partner in the goofy pop combo Cheeky Monkey is BMX Bandit/ex-Teenage Fanclubber/popster-about-Glasgow Francis Macdonald. Macdonald also runs Shoeshine Records, Shelley's UK label, and appears on almost 75% of the songs here, making for an efficient system. Nepotism has little to do with the quality of Shelley's music, however: a proponent of timeless pop, the former NYC DJ reaches back to influences like Nick Lowe, NRBQ and Rubber Soul-era Beatles for his back-to-basics sound. But in attracting players like Macdonald, vocalist Laura Cantrell, and Belle & Sebastian's Chris Geddes and Stevie Jackson, Too Many Movies treads between lush and spare sounds, arriving at a restrained balance that few others tread on. A self-deprecating guy who plays the lovable loser, Shelley's songs of love range from "Baby's In A Bad Mood" and "You Were Made to Break My Heart" to the more positive "Jigsaw Girl" and "The Girl With The Light In Her Eyes"--and you'll respond to each and every nerve he touches. --Randy Silver

Tribute albums are usually terrible. That said, there are several reasons why this one--a tribute to Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys--isn't, but it's mainly down to the quality of everyone involved. The usual songs aren't exhumed; instead we are treated to delights such as legendary Half-Japanese naïve poet Jad Fair's one-take version of The Honeys' 1977 pop gem "Do Ya" and Stevie (Belle & Sebastian) Jackson's intimate take on Beach Boys reject "Good Time". Throughout, there's an obvious love and quite stunning level of research--from the beautiful rare photographs of Brian taken by ex-housemate David Dalton to the copious sleeve-notes and exclusive Brian interview in the sumptuous 28-page booklet. Other highlights include former Josef K/Orange Juice member Malcolm Ross's lounge reading of "Heroes And Villains"; St Etienne's subtle reading of the unreleased "Stevie"; Katrina (The Pastels) Mitchell's sparse, whispered cover of "Wind Chimes"; and many more besides. Caroline Now is a fitting tribute. --Jerry Thackray

Those impassive, multicoloured faces, gazing from the artwork of True Skies may lead prospective purchasers to conclude--somewhat optimistically--that the Shining's debut album is some kind of post-millennial Brit-rock stab at psychedelia. Unfortunately, the truth--and, therefore the music--is a lot less polychromatic than the sleeve-designer and the bands' radiant moniker would have us believe. Heralding the welcome return of ex-Verve men Simon Tong and Simon Jones, the Shining have the occasionally handy way with a stadium-enhancing tune but, regrettably, give every indication that they inhabit a world where the only true gods are Noel Gallagher and Jimmy Page, two deities whose rhymester platitudes and Richter-troubling riffology must be worshipped and replicated at every turn. Indeed, the sort of idolatrous Led Zeppelin fixation that permeated the Stone Roses' lazy second album is all too apparent and may just be--conjecturally speaking--the lingering influence of John Squire's inceptive involvement with the band. While the persuasive, chiming mandolin of "Crest of an Ocean" and the excellent, consumer-friendly "Young Again" augur well for the future, True Skies does lack what description-seeking police officers commonly refer to as "distinguishing features". --Kevin Maidment

Having helped invent modern country rock with his contribution to the Byrds' Sweetheart Of The Rodeo, Gram Parsons left the Byrds in protest at their decision to tour South Africa and formed the Flying Burrito Brothers with fellow ex-Byrd Chris Hillman. Gilded Palace Of Sin and Burrito Deluxe are the only two Burritos' albums to feature the restless Parsons. The first is one of the best half dozen albums ever made, a dazzling synthesis of country traditions and hippie irreverence--Parsons' self-described "Cosmic American Music". The second is merely a work of thundering genius. Gilded Palace Of Sin brought out the best in Parsons, both as a writer ("Hot Burrito #1", better known as "I'm Your Toy", is now a standard) and a singer (his mournful version of "Dark End Of The Street" is worth the price on its own). His collaborations here with Chris Hillman ("Wheels" and "Juanita") would not have disgraced any Hank Williams record (like Williams, Parsons was never accepted by the Nashville country establishment). Burrito Deluxe, though somewhat erratic by comparison, contains at least one more Hillman/Parsons classic ("Cody Cody") and several typically impassioned covers, not the least of which is Parsons' tilt at the Rolling Stones' "Wild Horses"--a song variously rumoured to have been written for or about Parsons. --Andrew Mueller

Headline-grabbing personal upheavals turn into introspective surges on Homogenic, the third album by Icelandic singer Björk. Driven inward after a bizarre year accented by a much publicised mail bomb, airport cat fight and brawl between ex-lovers Tricky and Goldie, Björk gets lost in a wash of strings and minimalist techno patterns on her latest outing. The eccentricity and stylistic schizophrenia of Debut and Post have been cast away in favour of darker, more sublime edginess. Filled with songs about paranoia, heartbreak and lost faith, Homogenic not only showcases more mature themes, but a more uniform mood. Notch that up to Björk's decision to produce the album herself. Aside from a few nominal collaborations with Mark Bell of obscure techno outfit LFO and the Icelandic String Octet, this is the purest representation of the artist's vision. Little did we know that such a quirky personality would have such a bleak world view. Homogenic is almost too heavy to take in sitting, and songs, like the grating "Pluto", are downright unlistenable. But there are moments of inspiration that burn through the dark clouds, particularly on the contemplative "Joga" and the uplifting "Bachelorette". --Aidin Vaziri

The quintessential Pulp album that never was, Intro comprises three singles and their B-sides released on Sheffield's Gift label during 1992-3, just as the band perfected the brand of kitchen-sink pervorama pop that His 'N Hers would take into those same pink Dralon-curtained living rooms depicted by Jarvis Cocker. Besides the immortal "Babies", the unflinching "Razzmatazz" is one of Intro's highlights: a caustic pay-off to an ex where even the "na-na-na"s are vicious enough to guarantee it a place on any break-up compilation tape. Yet it's the B-sides which really show the group taking off after their 11-year run-up. "Styloroc (Nites of Suburbia)" is a wry look at the band's native Sheffield, a "strange exotic land of happy hours / where the sky is always grey and the food exceptionally greasy". Meanwhile the sprawling "Sheffield: Sex City" sees Jarvis wandering through the salacious suburbs, the band soundtracking his lustful desperation with a sultry electro-pop that pays tribute to Sheffield's other pop alumni: the Human League and Heaven 17. All this, plus more one-liners than you could shake a pair of corduroy flares at: Intro's low-rent glam and high-drama passion make it essential for more than just Pulp completists. --Abi Bliss

The promotional sticker slapped on the jewel case for the Mirabal CD advertises it as an "Alter-Native album." This pun cleverly summarizes the artistic strategy of a Native American who holds onto his tribal roots even as he embraces modern rock. Robert Mirabal (who uses only his last name on stage) still lives in the Taos Pueblo in New Mexico, where he grew up listening to traditional American Indian music around the house and rock & roll on the radio. He got his start in music playing flute instrumentals in new age arrangements in the style of R. Carlos Nakai and Bill Miller, but on Mirabal he fuses the two musics of his youth. Helping him do it is producer Michael Wanchic (John Mellencamp's former guitarist), Kenny Aronoff (Mellencamp's ex-drummer), and Mark Andes (former bassist for Spirit). They take the Tiwa rhythms of Mirabal's ethnic background and pump them up with emphatic backbeats and bluesy guitar riffs. Over these rumbling beats, Mirabal adds his fluttering, breathy flute solos and his vocals, both spoken recitations and sung melodies. The results inevitably recall John Trudell, another American Indian who fused tribal themes and rock & roll with striking effect, but Mirabal is less political and more personal than his predecessor. When Mirabal sings in the voice of a "Medicine Man," for example, he laments that he can "razzle dazzle ghosts," but "can't manage your love for me." On "Sundance Love," he turns a nature hymn into an erotic ballad. The album's centerpiece is a marvelously detailed 10-minute narrative about "Tony & Allison," a pair of young Navajos who go on a crime spree across the Southwest; it ends with Allison wondering how she drifted so far from the tribal virtues of her childhood and how she can get back there. --Geoffrey Himes

It's a great title, but can the second album by codpiece-clad rockers The Darkness measure up to the good-time japery of their debut? Fears that the rancorous departure of bassist Frankie Poullain (replaced by Richie Edwards) might have tarnished their saucy-postcard image are proved groundless seconds into the opening title-track, which, for all its serious subject matter --the dangers of cocaine abuse--rattles along with a preposterous amount of cowbell and a guitar-shaped swimming pool of cunning puns: "I've always tried to keep my vices under wraps", coos Hawkins, with the mock-innocence of a mischievous choirboy. Recorded with "Bohemian Rhapsody" producer Roy Thomas Baker, the rest is a feat of flamboyant musicianship and shameless high-fidelity sound. One highlight comes with "English Country Garden", a falsetto-pitched number reminiscent of Queen in their pomp that sees Hawkins compare his genitalia to a prize-winning marrow. One Way TicketÂ…, however, is particularly notable for an explicitly romantic streak. "Is It Just Me?" ("Or am I all on my own again?") is a desperate letter to a distant ex-lover, and if the title "Dinner Lady Arms" isn't exactly the most flattering of testaments, the sincerity of its sentiment is unmistakable.-- Louis Pattison More to Explore The Darkness Permission to Land (CD) Permission to Rock(Paperback) Permission to Land (TAB) Find more Darkness

Method Man Blackout [VINYL]

Blackout is a welcome joint effort (in more than one sense) from two of hip-hop's most entertaining, popular personalities: "two boys possessed by dough, hos and hydros", rap's self-proclaimed Cheech and Chong; Mans Method and Red. As one would expect from an album produced by ex-EPMD man Erick Sermon, many of the tracks tend towards the soporific; it can often be difficult to spot the tune amongst the tub-thumping beats and murky backgrounds. In these instances the distinct voices of our hosts more than compensate, and elsewhere Blackout covers a surprising variety of aural styles; meandering from the stadium-rocking title track to the infectious and irresistible ("Checka" and "Tear It Off") and the inevitably spliffed-out ("Mi Casa" and "The?") via the quickly forgotten and ridiculous ("Fire ina Hole" and "Cereal Killer"). Meth fans might feel a little short-changed by the fact that one of these standouts, "Big Dogs", appeared previously on Tical 2000: Judgement Day, but the whole affair is carried off with such humour, character and deftness of touch that they're unlikely to care. -- Paul Philpott

Folk-rock stalwarts Steeleye Span have had almost as long and colourful a career as their close cousins, Fairport Convention. Unlike Fairport, though, they've never had the luxury of an annual reunion festival in which alumni and current members can all rub shoulders. So September 2nd, 1995 was a special day at The Forum in London, as Spanners past and present came together for the first time. The original 1969 line-up was put together by ex-Fairporter Ashley Hutchings (who would later go on to form The Albion Band) and over the years Steeleye Span's freewheeling roster developed into a veritable who's who of British folk. They're all here, together. Aside from Hutchings, Martin Carthy, Tim Hart, John Kirkpatrick and Rick Kemp among many others came in and out of the band; but above all, singer Maddy Prior helped determine Steeleye Span's unique style: her distinctive, slightly nasal vocals are one of the defining sounds of the British folk revival. What's on offer here is a memorial of a unique event, with rough edges intact but exuding a palpable sense of occasion that's infectious. And given that this two-disc set also doubles as an effective tour through the musical highlights of the band's history ("All Around My Hat", "Thomas The Rhymer" for example), it's also great place for newcomers to begin. A lavish booklet, with extensive notes and glossy photos, completes a package that will be absolutely essential for any Span fan. -- Mark Walker

Clearly, Alex Chilton neglected to examine the small print of his rock & roll deal with Satan: in return for the genius pop flair that inspired Big Star into being, he was rewarded with total commercial ignominy and a bizarre degree of love in Glasgow, home of such disciples as Teenage Fanclub. Radio Sweethearts, by contrast, as if to make up for sounding nothing like Chilton has ever done, got him in to produce this. Radio Sweethearts are, of course, a country rock band, (almost) named after the Gram Parsons-led Byrds album that remains the benchmark for the genre. Radio Sweethearts' take on country, however, is inspired more by the old school of gentleman country crooners, as best exemplified by Jim Reeves--no interring of ex-girlfriends beneath Jacob's sycamore here. While they can rattle these swinging ballads off as well as anyone, Radio Sweethearts have rather overlooked the sense of time and place that makes the best country what it is, and hence err far too often on the side of pastiche. Lonesome Blue, though no hardship at all to listen to, is nothing more or less than an impeccably crafted period piece, as admirable and yet unfulfilling as a modern replica of a Carthaginian vase. -- Andrew Mueller

A decade after Cinema Paradiso, the Golden Globe-winning score for The Legend Of 1900 reunites director Giuseppe Tornatore and composer Ennio Morricone for a film rich in affection for memories of jazz, ragtime and blues. This is the fable of Novecento (Tim Roth), a man born on the first day of 1900, who lives on a ship, pays his way by playing the piano, and who has never touched terra ferma. Although it reminds us that Morricone also wrote a wonderful score for Bernardo Bertolucci's 1900 (aka Novecento), this new music is equally fine. Central to the score are a variety of attractive piano melodies, from the exuberant to the melancholy, sometimes played unaccompanied, more usually with orchestra. The jazz arrangements are akin to those in his score for Leone's Once Upon A Time in America, while the orchestral writing has the haunting beauty of that score as well as Morricone's Oscar-winning The Mission. The song "Lost Boys Calling" is performed and co-written by ex-Pink Floyd vocalist Roger Waters, and can also be found on the debut album by singer Filippa Giordano. --Gary S. Dalkin

David Bowie All Saints: Collected Instrumentals 1977-1999

All Saints collects some of David Bowie's best instrumental work from his previous albums. And his timing couldn't be better: Embarrassing drum & bass excursions, a dalliance with pantomime Goths Placebo, stock-market flotations, Tin Machine--all have meant that loving the alien has not been easy during the last 17 years or so. Which helps explain why this collection of instrumentals verges on an epiphany, offering a stark reminder of the sheer mind-boggling scope of Bowie's sound and vision. Most of these 16 brooding soundscapes are plucked from Bowie's hugely influential 1977 albums Low and Heroes. Taking his cue from Kraftwerk, Bowie enlisted Brian Eno--ex-Roxy Music boffin and ambient pioneer--and decamped to Berlin. It's no exaggeration to say that the resulting albums were integral in defining the future path of modern music. Throughout, there's a palpable sense of foreboding, perhaps best exemplified by "Sense of Doubt", a truly unsettling mesh of booming piano and spookily spiralling synths. That the Thin White Duke's Berlin material still dazzles is no surprise. However, it's the remarkable revelation--provided by a clutch of slightly more recent tracks--that he can still cut it--that'll hearten disillusioned Bowie fans everywhere. --Chris King

When phalanxes of expectorating, spike-topped pariahs shattered the pipe-dreams of the Thames blues delta's proudest sons, they simply picked themselves up, brushed themselves down and produced a sophomore album of rare vision. Life On The Line saw the band stepping away from their traditionalist R&B roots and infusing their short, sharp stabs of sparkling twelve-bar riffage with a little MC5 adrenaline. Despite stylistically swimming against the punk rock tide, they even managed to produce one of 1977's ultimate Zeitgeist-defining anthems with the inspiring self-affirmation of "Do Anything You Wanna Do". The addition of second guitarist and ex Kursaal Flyer Graeme Douglas not only served to fatten the band's hitherto weedy sound, but also fleshed out their covers-heavy repertoire with a much-needed injection of song-writing muscle and flair. Classic album or not, the Rods swiftly collapsed under punk's unstoppable onslaught, with bassist Paul Gray ultimately jumping ship for the Damned. Ian Fortnam

Fabolous has been compared often to self-exiled MC Mase, but though his flow is reminiscent of the ex-Bad Boy's laid-back delivery, all similarities end there. Ghetto Fabolous might be an album that appeals to younger hip-hop heads, but more-discerning fans will find that the freshman artist makes several mistakes that blunt his debut's impact. The missteps include uninspired subject matter (illegal business dealings, ghetto flossing, and fighting off persistent groupies); gratuitous use of the words "thug", "gangsta", and "playa"; and an entire song centred around a Notorious BIG riff ("Get Right" is a mediocre "Players Anthem" knockoff). On the plus side, the album's chock-full of guest appearances designed to please those aforementioned youngsters; Ja Rule's strident vocals on "Ride for This" almost drown out his host's more meticulous delivery. The album's one true bright spot is the dancefloor-friendly "Now and Later." With this one song, Fabolous lives up to the hype. -- Rebecca Levine

Fronted by eternal cynic Peter Steele (ex-Carnivore), Type O Negative have evolved from an atmospheric punk band to a melodic gothic metal outfit. The band's breakthrough disc Bloody Kisses blends gothic keyboards, dense guitars, and mournful vocals reminiscent of Sisters of Mercy with metal riffs and surging rhythms that sound like a cross between Black Sabbath and The Cult. The combination is compelling, and on "Christian Woman" and "Black No. 1" (which features the chorus "Loving you was like loving the dead"), Type O Negative's negativity shines through in a way that makes depressed teenage girls dressed in black swoon. --Jon Wiederhorn

With a list of varied credentials that stretches further than anyone in recent living memory, revered innovator Dave Pajo (ex-Slint, ex-Tortoise, ex-Aerial M / Papa M, err, ex-Zwan--but he was only the bass player) finally releases something under his own name. Literally. Pajo by Pajo will be a delight to anyone familiar with his previous form, and a joy to the newcomer. The story goes that this was recorded very cheaply on a home computer (which comes as no surprise, given Pajo's past works), though the resulting songs don't sound lo-fi, and are strong enough to shine through the basic production. Mostly reduced to a heavily reverbed voice and acoustic guitar with light percussion (or processed beats) underpinning the song's meandering charm-filled overtones. Only on "War Is Dead" does the tone approach anything more than a laid-back tempo when the minor key guitar and heavier percussion intrudes. Light on obvious hooks or choruses, the songs still resonate in their stark simplicity, enveloping the listener in a blanket of sweet sound. Reminiscent in some places of early Simon & Garfunkel (especially on "Manson Twins"), the feel is open and airy with a slight undercurrent of eeriness to balance it out. Highly recommended. --Thom Allott

House Of Pain Shamrocks and Shenanigans - The Best of House of Pain

Why is Shamrocks & Shenanigans a best of both House of Pain's and Everlast's (their ex front man) work? Because neither of them added up to the sum of their parts. Irish American rappers House of Pain's one big moment was the single "Jump Around". And what a moment it is. "Jump Around" is perhaps the most energetic and infectious hip-hop track ever made, the sort of tune people who hate hip-hop love. It was produced by DJ Muggs from Cypress Hill whose services Everlast then decided to dispense with and very soon House of Pain were no more. Everlast's move into a solo career had a similar pattern. The hit single "What's It Like" is a piece of classic modern rock. The rest of his work, as he moved from rapper into bluesy folk singer hanging out with the hip-hop crowd, is patchy. However "Black Coffee" and the striking "Black Jesus" showed a unique talent for bringing together the hillbilly and the homeboy (aka hick-hop). Everlast never capitalised on this. A sad mixture of ill health, self-destructive behaviour and a losing battle with Eminem sapped his thirst for the fight. Unfortunately his excellent collaboration with Santana ("Put Your Lights On") is missing from this album. Two for the price of one? Nope, but together this pair make one very good album. -- Jake Barnes
