Gang Starr Full Clip: a Decade of Gang StarrSe flere produkter fra AmazonA massive double disc packed with 33 tracks--a few new cuts, many old faves, and some rare B-sides-- Full Clip presents a decent overview of the group's impressive 10-year sonic canon. Gang Starr standards spanning the likes of "Manifest" (from their 1989 debut, No More Mr. Nice Guy), to the anti stick-up kid rhetoric of "Just to Get a Rep" (off of 1991's Step in the Arena), to "Soliloquy of Chaos", their rapturous criticism of violence at rap shows (culled from 1992's Daily Operation), as well as "Code of the Streets" and "Mass Appeal" (both taken from 1994's Hard to Earn), are all represented in full. Additionally, there are plenty of tasty B-sides like "Credit Is Due" and "The ? Remains", tucked in alongside soundtrack contributions like the pioneering jazz/hip-hop jammie "Jazz Thing" from Spike Lee's Mo' Better Blues. And the new tracks, such as the lumbering, scratch-filled "Full Clip", prove that Gang Starr are still very capable of concocting relevant, head-bangin' hip-hop madness. If there are any complaints with Full Clip, it's that the compilation tends to lean more heavily toward the group's later efforts (only one joint off Mr. Nice Guy is included while there are at least five represented from each of their '92, '94, and '98 efforts). Plus there are a few noticeable omissions, specifically "Love Sick", Guru's tasty lament from Step in the Arena. But the gist of the Full Clip compendium is to celebrate Gang Starr's noteworthy career by presenting a broad overview of the duo's work, and to that end, it delivers in spades. --Spence Abbott Fragt: Ukendt! |

Bill Frisell East WestSe flere produkter fra AmazonOn East/West Bill Frisell proves once again he is one of the most prolific players of his generation. While it's a measure of his success that he's able to pursue a wide variety of projects, the bottom line is his insatiable musical curiosity warrants all the attention he receives. East/West is a two-disc live set, one recorded on each coast. All are trio performances, with drummer Kenny Wollesen playing throughout, Viktor Krauss on bass in California, Tony Scherr in New York. So supple is the interplay that the stylistic change in the two bassists makes for a subtly different character to each of the nights. Frisell focuses on a mix traditional, folk, and even soul in the west; in the east there's a bit more drawn from the jazz canon (though not entirely, as the version of "Crazy" is a marvel as Scherr sets down his bass and picks up an acoustic guitar). --David Greenberger Fragt: Ukendt! |

Luke Haines New WaveSe flere produkter fra AmazonThe title, Auteurs' auteur Luke Haines would later explain, was "a crap joke", as was his decision to pose for the cover photograph got up as a 1950s matinée idol playing Lawrence Of Arabia. These were hardly the last signifiers of Haines' somewhat obtuse sense of humour, and New Wave was only the first of several unnervingly great and wilfully diverse albums by The Auteurs. It was heavily in hock to The Kinks and The Go-Betweens but had enough going for it on its own merits that it is rightly regarded as one of the best British debuts of the decade. Much of New Wave is consumed with fame; specifically, with Haines' fascination with and horror of those who have attained it. Songs like "Don't Trust The Stars", "Starstruck" and "Valet Parking" pick at the subject with the same morbid wonder as small children with scabs. Though Haines doesn't reach any firm conclusions--the last line of the album is "A test you took ... awaiting results"--he makes an unarguable case for himself as a striking new talent, and a genuine successor to Ray Davies and Mark E. Yat-Kha Tuva.RockSe flere produkter fra AmazonWith two former members on paternity leave and their core membership down to three, Tuva Rock finds these south Siberian alt. folk rockers getting back to basics. Despite being a regular feature of their current live shows, the band's sole female contributor Sailyk Ommun only features as a "guest vocalist" on one track and supplies the occasional flourish on the giant Tuvan zither the group are named after. As the name would suggest, Tuva Rock concentrates on Albert Kuvezin's grinding electric guitar more than their previous album Aldyn Dashka. That in itself isn't a problem. Rock is back in vogue big time, and when this band decide to rock out, as on the driving "Langchyy Boom" and the extraordinary "Dorug Daiym", they're very impressive. Radical reworkings of traditional Tuvan folk songs have always been their speciality, and fortunately there's still plenty of igil and morinhuur (Tuvan stringed instruments) in evidence. Unfortunately, Albert seems to have overdone the use of his ultra-bass kanzat style vocals. And when does this in English, as is the case on the five original compositions he contributes, the joke wears thin pretty quickly, intentionally or not. Maybe it's the switch from using part-time Mekon Lu Edmonds (who has played lots with the band) to pop producer Paul Corkett, but Tuva Rock lacks the subtlety and atmospherics that made its predecessor such an engaging record. While many a pundit snootily dismissed them during their prime as some sort of prefabricated aberration, their worldwide popularity peaked somewhere just south of Beatlemania. Indeed, Abba's music was as finely tooled and crafted as anything to come from a Volvo or Ikea factory --if occasionally more economically potent. This double-disc, 37-track anthology comes neatly on the heels of Mama Mia, the smash, if unlikely, stage show based on the band's hits, and documents every single released by the band's Polar label in their home country was as well as key tracks released as singles elsewhere internationally. When you hear the term "Europop," this is the canon from whence the term sprang. With a continental sense of vocal neo-classicism, informed by just the right ethnic clichés (and oft wed to the era's insistent 4/4 disco beat) to make songs like "Mama Mia", "Fernando", "Chiquitita" and "Voulez-Vous" work on a global scale, the writing team of Bjorn Ulvaeus/Benny Anderson and their respective partners in music and life, Agnetha Faltskog and Frida Lyngstad, developed the seamless, wall-of-sound productions contained herein. Definitive Collection features a rare single remix of "Ring, Ring" and a 1979 promo-only extended mix of "Voulez-Vous" as bonus tracks, as well as a concise, illustrated history of the band and each track. --Jerry McCulley Fragt: Ukendt! |
