Victor Wooten Live in AmericaSe flere produkter fra AmazonThe downside of declining CD-manufacturing costs is that artists feel free to put out even their most ephemeral musical musings. Victor Wooten's Live in America, though full of masterful moments, has chaff amongst the wheat. There's stage patter that might have been fun if you were there, slight 1970s pop-funk ("What Did He Say" and "Hormones in the Headphones"), disco ("Yinin' and Yangin'") and Hendrix and Ozzy quotes in order to get to instrumentals such as "Sacred Silence/The Jam Man" and "Miller Time" (featuring Marcus Miller), which offer the kind of soulful and mind-altering bass guitar work that the man does best. Wooten is a willful eclectic and, as his work with Bela Fleck proves, that can be fine. Still, though the musicians do a workmanlike job here, it takes a band of equal virtuosos such as the Flecktones, and some serious editing to make this kind of genre-hopping truly work. His bandmates refer to him as "The Teacher" in his introduction and Live in America should inspire bass students to practice. Oasis (What's the Story) Morning Glory?Se flere produkter fra AmazonOasis were already dubbed the New Beatles before the release of What's The Story--within a month of it going multi-platinum, The Times claimed they were more important than the Fabs; and Liam Gallagher was inviting George Harrison to fight him on Primrose Hill. But then, you'd feel cocky enough to pick on a Beatle if you'd just recorded these songs. Obviously the singles--"Wonderwall", "Don't Look Back In Anger", "Some Might Say"--rock; but it's a shocker rediscovering just how ace the album tracks are. The minor-chord that the chorus of "Hey Now!" pivots on could liquefy a brick; "Champagne Supernova" is the sound of a band riding the nose-cone of a rock & roll Concorde, and as for "She's Electric"--ah, well. Sparks PropagandaSe flere produkter fra AmazonAh, the eternal problem of how to follow up the overnight success. It's often the case that groups change their sound and image to keep up the commercial winning streak once they hit the big time, often at the expense of their original appeal. Sparks, however, are a law unto themselves. Whatever acclaim was brought by Kimono My House appears to have been ignored by the Mael brothers, who instead solidified the style of demented, sinister pop songs that the band pioneered. In this case, Ron Mael's eye for lyrical detail, welded to an off-kilter tune, makes for a unique offering. Who else could write the utterly sincere "Bon Voyage", sung from the viewpoint of the animals that didn't get onto Noah's Ark? Also apparent is an early indication of Sparks' reluctance to be pigeonholed as a guitar band; the opening title track is an acapella offering, while the jazzy flourishes that colour the following album Indiscreet make their appearances on nearly every track. Sure, they still rock out, especially on "At Home, At Work, At Play" and "Something for the Girl with Everything", but the detail beneath the surface shows Sparks' unique gift for the darkly humourous.
