High Voltage, their debut album, is remarkable in the context of AC/DC's vast, awesomely single-minded discography for containing what remains AC/DC's lone foray into experimentation in nearly three decades: the delightfully incongruous bagpipe solo in the opening track, "It's A Long Way To The Top (If You Wanna Rock & Roll)". Elsewhere, business as usual: drums like the plods of a lumbering dinosaur, bass like the ominous rumbleof a waking volcano, the 17-year-old Angus Young's guitars as crude and effective as circular saws. G4 Act ThreeSe flere produkter fra AmazonG4 have certainly come a long way since their days as London buskers and classical music students. With two highly-praised albums behind them (containing remarkable versions of songs like "Bohemian Rhapsody", "Everybody Hurts" and "You're the Voice", and classical covers that run from "Nessun Dorma" to "La Donna E Mobile"), the charismatic quartet known now deliver a third album of vocal showpieces. Once again they approach a quite dizzying array of songs - from Queen's "Somebody to Love" and the Boomtown Rats' "I Don't Like Mondays" to "Volare" and "Amazing Grace" - with impeccable confidence and a sense of stylish perfection. Act 3 contains several potential 2006 Xmas anthems, including a sublime rendition of "Silent Night", and the choice of songs, wonderful harmonizing and captivating arrangements (two tracks have been recorded with a big band) indicate a slightly more mature direction for the band in general. --Danny McKenna Fragt: Ukendt! |

Staple Singers Let's Do It AgainSe flere produkter fra AmazonAlthough the film is obscure, the soundtrack is essential- as part of their magnificent efforts to bring everything Curtis Mayfield-related to the digital age. Charly Records have reissued Let's Do It Again. And when you have one of the pioneers of soulful Southern funk writing for possibly the greatest soul/ gospel crossover act (both at the top of their game), what can you expect other than true excellence? In fact, the only thing that loses points here is that fact that there's only eight tracks on it; what is on there, though is largely faultless. The songwriting is Curtis Mayfield in pure, soulful, laid-back mode (think of "Give Me Your Love"), which, coupled with Mavis Staples' incredible voice treads the fine line between seductive and spiritual, and firmly succeeds in both camps. The title track (a minor hit) simply smoulders, while "New Orleans" is as sensual as silk sheets. Only the instrumental "Chase" seems pedestrian, but that might be down to the absence of any vocals. Everything else is truly brilliant, showcasing the best of Mayfield's writing abilities and the Staples' vocal talents; for any fan of soulful laid-back funk, this is as close to perfection as you can get. - Thom Allott Fragt: Ukendt! |

George Benson Absolute BensonSe flere produkter fra AmazonGeorge Benson doesn't mess around. Within the first minute of AbsoluteBenson the man has yet again re-established the superlative musical credentials that have seen him garner a veritable mountain of respect and praise through his 40 year plus career as a vocalist and guitarist. The album starts off with a cover of Donny Hathaway's classic, "The Ghetto". While New York dance music maestros Masters At Work ensure the track has an up-to-date feel, it's Benson's voice, smoother and more refined than the most luxurious Italian Latté that instantly captures, charms and seduces the ear. It's a fitting start, even though most of the remaining tracks are instrumentals. The creamy tones of Benson's guitar weave their easy way through bright tunes, sophisticated funk and fizzy arrangements (mostly using a modern accoustic quartet) penned by the likes of Stevie Wonder,J oe Sample, Marc Antoine and, of course, Benson himself. Hesperion XX Elizabethan Consort MusicSe flere produkter fra AmazonIt's always a treat to experience the best of something: in this case, a performance of 16th-century music. Of course, the form and makeup of the viol consort, which includes various sizes of viols, often joined by other strings such as lute, itself is an instrumental configuration as close to perfection as any ensemble can be. This, accompanied by a style of writing that fully exploits the complementary timbres and the abilities of each instrument to delineate intricate polyphonic passages as well as to deliver chordal harmonies with uniquely rich resonance, makes for some of the most listenable music ever invented. Jordi Savall and his Hesperion XX are simply the world's best at this sort of music, and on this program they just flawlessly go about their business, bringing us more than two dozen delightful, dancing pieces from several composers, including John Taverner, William Mundy, and Anonymous. --David Vernier Fragt: Ukendt! |

The latter in particular is a protosoul masterpiece, copied note-for-note by Elvis and others. The sixteen titles on this collection run the gamut of Jackson's Scepter-Wand hits from the slow-burning perfection of his revival of "Since I Don't Have You" to the gospel-inflected "Something You Got." Cara Dillon Cara DillonSe flere produkter fra AmazonWith her self-titled debut album, Derry-born Cara Dillon joins the ever-growing band of young singers producing traditional albums that sit equally well with a more mainstream audience. Having shone in, and then left, the hapless Equation, Dillon has struck out with musical partner Sam Lakeman (and this is essentially a duo album in all but name) to stunning effect. The material featured is all traditional in source and performed to a largely acoustic backing, plus Lakeman's rolling piano and the odd inspired moment of electricity. Dillon has a voice that sets her apart from the more traditional singers, at times sounding as if she should be fronting a dreamy guitar band rather than a folk group. She handles the songs expertly, however, combining originality and understanding to perfection. And while to group her with Kate Rusby (another Equation alumni) and Bill Jones may appear an obvious thing to do, it is these three young women who are producing the sort of folk music that will keep the fire burning long into the 21st century. --Phil Udell Fragt: Ukendt! |
