Various Artists Gas, Food, LodgingSe flere produkter fra AmazonThe real magic on the Gas Food Lodging soundtrack is the 13 untitled, instrumental tracks by J Mascis of Dinosaur Jr. They are simple, mostly sparse compositions of drums, electric/acoustic guitars, and piano. What they do so well is capture the humbling barrenness and hidden sparkle of the American West without stealing the now-ubiquitous Ry Cooder slide guitar approach. More complex are the pieces by jazz devil Barry Adamson, who shares film-scoring duty. His boisterous, knock-'em-down-and-drag-'em-out jazz slaughters are missing this time around. Showing remarkable restraint, Adamson's work on the score can be viewed as--gulp--pleasant! Most affable is his orchestral "Odio Amor, Odio Amor", which seems like it should be accompanying a group of children tumbling in virgin snow. A hodgepodge of other bands fill in and round out the soundtrack with incidental music--the cheap death thrash of Antagonist's "Insight", the light techno flair of Renegade Soundwave's "Women Respond To Bass", and the sloppy, raucous rock of The Velvet Monkeys' "We Call It Rock". -- Michael Woodring Fragt: Ukendt! |

Green On Red Gas Food Lodging/Green On RedSe flere produkter fra AmazonThis is in some respects a curious reissue. The 1982 mini-album Green on Red was Green on Red's debut; the 1985 album Gas Food Lodging was Green on Red's third release. Quite why the intervening album, 1983's Gravity Talks has not been deemed worthy of rerelease is anyone's guess (it sounded fine at the time, and indeed it does now). That exceedingly minor quibble aside, this pairing should be welcomed by anyone whose tastes tend toward rock & roll at its most elemental Green on Red were a great group, sonic and spiritual inheritors of the template sketched by Neil Young and Creedence Clearwater Revival, and these two albums still sound remarkably fresh. When Green on Red was released in 1982, the originally Arizona-based band were bracketed with the Paisley Underground clique (Dream Syndicate, Rain Parade, the Bangles) then emergent in Los Angeles. Green on Red were always a little wilder, however, on stage, on record and in day-to-day life. Though cheaply done, Green on Red is a singular debut. By the time Gas Food Lodging was recorded, Green on Red had been joined by guitarist Chuck Prophet IV, whose virtuosity anchored the group with glorious tracks such as "That's What Dreams Were Made For" and "Hair of the Dog" are rock & roll at its most gratifyingly scabrous. --Andrew Mueller Fragt: Ukendt! |

Steve Reich Music for 18 MusiciansSe flere produkter fra AmazonThe 1978 recording of Reich's seminal Music for 18 Musicians still astounds. Listeners aware of the talents of such bands as Tortoise or Gas or of DJs such as Vladislav Delay or Aphex Twin and fans of Warp records or the click, cut and glitch of recent post-techno could all do with checking out what continues to be vital source material. Lovers of Bach, Satie, Stravinsky, Nancarrow, Cage, Stockhausen, Budd, Eno or Phillip Glass will all find this a very special and rewarding listening experience. Reich's 1970's Pulse work is often recalled as repetitive, which it unarguably is, but the artfulness, intricacy and the seamless layering of this beautiful piece is less often noted. Reich builds and deconstructs, endlessly moving what turns out to be not merely a work of huge intellect and technical skill but an emotional and complex and hugely satisfying piece of music. Pulp Different ClassSe flere produkter fra AmazonIt became increasingly apparent during 1995 that the answer to the question "Blur or Oasis?" was, in fact, "Pulp". Different Class was the sound of a band so on "it" that they defined "it". Thirty years of fury, frustration, sexual longing, class angst and observations about girls' skirts was rammed into the grand Brechtian/Brel-like drama of "Live Bed Show", "I Spy" and, of course, "Common People"; and sure enough it has the impact of crashing head-on into someone's entire sordid, suppressed secret life. When Jarvis hisses "I can't help it / I was dragged up / Grass is something you smoke/ Birds are something you shag / Take your 'Year In Provence' and shove it up your ass," it sounds like mustard gas escaping over the trenches in the class war. Sting Brand New DaySe flere produkter fra AmazonThere is a difference between being an inspired musician and an informed musician. Sting is the latter. As always, he surrounds himself with ultra-talented artists: this time around Stevie Wonder, Branford Marsalis, James Taylor, guitarist Dominic Miller and the prince of rai Cheb Mami fill the roster. Brand New Day exhibits about as many musical styles as there are tracks, all encased in dense, meticulous production. The album begins promisingly. "A Thousand Years" pulses atop a lush, two-note foundation. "A Desert Rose" folds trilling Algerian pop into trip-hop. Melodic, late-night jazz ballads dominate the middle portion of the collection. But Sting's preoccupation with odd-numbered time signatures prevents the songs from grooving, while the choruses are yawns. "Fill Her Up", a country tune, represents Sting at his most self-indulgent. Listening to one of the wealthiest musicians in pop singing "Got no money to invest/Got no prospect/Or education/I was lucky to get the job at this gas station" requires a heroic suspension of disbelief. The song morphs into this rousing gospel number where Sting and a supporting chorus chant "You gotta fill 'er up with Jesus!/You gotta fill her up with life!"
