MIA KalaSe flere produkter fra AmazonThe desire to seek culture and tradition from outside one's own backyard to influence your art and music is nothing new--from The Beatles through Marc Bolan, Paul Simon and up to Damon Albarn with his Mali Music, evidence is rife even in the mainstream. The only problem for M.I.A (aka London born Maya Arulpragasam) is that her backyard was flung far and wide in the first instance, growing up as she did in the UK, India and Sri Lanka--which may go some way to explaining the bewildering, fragrant, intoxicating mesh of sounds, rhythms and head-on sonic clashes that surge willfully throughout her second album, Kala--the result of her own personal voyage of artistic discovery. She's absorbed, in addition to her own eclectic electro beginnings, aboriginal hip-hop, Jamaican dancehall, Liberian and Trinidadian influences, also finding the time to work with Timbaland (not nearly, incidentally, the highlight of the record). On "Mango Pickle Down River" she sounds like Missy Elliot shuffling in a didgeridoo with a rapping children's choir she picked up somewhere en route, while the fittingly titled "World Town" is grime arriving on an asteroid during a tribal ceremony with sound effects ranging from a cocked gun to apparent digitized bagpipes. Considering how out-of-this-world-original M.I.A's Mercury-nominated debut Arular was it is a rare delight that she's progressed with such resolute surefootedness, losing none of her intrigue. The Wiggles Toot Toot!Se flere produkter fra AmazonThe Wiggles, that wacky Australian outfit wowing kids from Down Under, welcome pre-schoolers for a lively, loopy musical fiesta with Toot Toot. Chiming in on this 23-track charmer of a dance and sing-along are the usual wiggly suspects: Captain Feathersword relates how he loves to dance in his pirate pants on the spoken-word "Raincoat Story"; Henry the Octopus's "marvellous talent" for baking, roasting, and frying seaweed pies is celebrated on "Henry the Octopus", and his tireless tentacles also inspire the next get-you-moving tune, "Move Your Arms Like Henry". The gang drops in on Dorothy the Dinosaur on "Tell Me Who Is That Knocking?" Then rascally pup Wags gets down on "Wags the Dog, He Likes to Tango" (which, we're reminded, rhymes with mango). Mostly, this is silly, groove-along good fun, but the goofball foursome of Anthony, Murray, Greg, and Jeff also slip in a solidly educational number here and there: "Look Both Ways" drives home an important safety message for little pedestrians, and "John Bodlelum" and "I Climb Ten Stairs" reinforce recently acquired counting skills. As always, the Wiggles dish up a dose of Australianisms, but here they're easy to digest. Listening to "Food, Food, Food", curious kids who don't hail from Oz will want t know what paw paws and rockmelon are; chalk it up as a chance to turn a song they'll like into a foreign-culture learning experience, and keep on wiggling. --Tammy La Gorce Fragt: Ukendt! |

Salif Keita AmenSe flere produkter fra AmazonThe Mansa of Mali...A Retrospective, is an anthology that draws from his three U.S. releases on Mango and throws in four more songs never released here. The result is an excellent introduction to this superb singer and composer, who combines the best of ancient griot traditions, modern pop technology, and borrowed elements from other African diaspora cultures. The album opens with a typical juxtaposition of old and new--the sound of Keita's piercing, high-pitched wail over a sustained synthesizer chord form "Sina," part of his 1987 debut solo album "Soro." Although Keita sings in his native Bambara language, his powerful, eerie high tenor has the impact of a warning siren no matter what tongue the listener understands. His compositions are full of lush harmonies (voices, synths, horns, kora, guitars) set to rippling polyrhythms, but Keita's urgent lead vocal always cuts through everything else. In addition to three songs from Soro, two from 1989's "Ko-Yan" and one from "Amen," this compilation includes three songs (previously unreleased here) from the Steve Hillage-produced soundtrack for "L'Enfant lion." The rarest, most exciting cut, though, is "Mandjou," the jazzy 12-minute vamp in honor of Guinean statesman Sekou Touré, it was recorded in Cîte d'Ivoire in 1978 and became Keita's first big hit throughout Africa. --Geoffrey Himes Fragt: Ukendt! |
