Filter Title of RecordSe flere produkter fra Amazon"Hey Man, Nice Shot" may have been a fluke hit, but Filter's Richard Patrick has spent four years working on the follow-up album, mastering enough sonic variety to ensure that Filter stick around the moshpit. Programmer Brian Liesegang is gone, but Patrick continues on, picking up the slack and yielding nothing. Crowd reaction is impossible to anticipate, but at 70 minutes, Title of Record is an exhaustive collection of hyper-kinetic guitars, subliminal melodies and thunderous dynamics--which is to say, it sports plenty of hard rock aggression, but is firmly rooted in the pop experience that keeps the songs in your head. "It's Gonna Kill Me" has a stalker's vibe in its techno-metal roots, while "Take a Picture" and "Captain Bligh" are radio-friendly unit shifters that suggest that underneath the technology rests a beating, and often bruised, human heart. --Rob O'Connor Fragt: Ukendt! |

Filter The AmalgamutSe flere produkter fra AmazonThe Amalgamut, the third album from Filter, finds them deep in the process of refining their bleak industrial rock design. Frontman Richard Patrick was part of the touring incarnation of Nine Inch Nails back in the early 1990s, but gave it all up to perform his own brand of mildly controversial schlock-rock. Seven years on, The Amalgamut finds Filter a much slicker beast, polished up with the latest studio tricks and touting a fresh, mainstream-friendly songwriting nous that points the way forward, but never quite delivers in full. You've got to respect the way that "American Cliché" and "The Only Way (Is the Wrong Way)" can take carbon-black rage and meld it into chrome-smooth alternative pop songs. The trouble is, all too often, Filter successfully cop the glossy stadium-rock sound and sound-of-the-future production techniques, but forget to throw in the populist hooks to keep anyone interested. "Columind" is rage of the most sterile, impotent kind, while the drippy "The Missing" breaks out the acoustic guitars for a quiet moment that falls dismally flat. Why anyone needs an album like The Amalgamut while similar groups of the calibre of Radiohead and Tool exist is, frankly, something of a mystery. --Louis Pattison Fragt: Ukendt! |

Filter Short BusSe flere produkter fra AmazonGuilty pleasure alert No. 2013: Filter absolutely, positively would not exist without the dirty, gritty musical formulas laid before him by Nine Inch Nails' Trent Reznor. The on-the-edge screams, the heavy industrial rhythms, the full-frontal guitar sounds--it's all been done before. And if that weren't enough, vocalist-guitarist-rhythmatist Richard Patrick lived a pre-Filter life as a touring band member in an early version of the aforementioned Nails. Indeed, Short Bus couldn't get more plagiaristically preposterous, and yet--oh, the guilt--this is the perfect disc to primally purge by. From the disc's crunchy opener hit "Hey Man Nice Shot" through to the oh-so-Trent-y "Under" and the slow, stalking beats of the hilariously tagged "Gerbil", this disc is 46 minutes of fiery fun; you could spend time being pissed off at its lack of originality or you could just enjoy it for what it is--sheer walls of white noise. --Denise Sheppard Fragt: Ukendt! |

Elliott Smith Xo [VINYL]Se flere produkter fra AmazonOn XO, Elliott Smith leaves the indie doldrums behind and takes wing to new, lush surroundings. By adding full instrumentation to his acoustic reveries, Smith has ascended to a new level of song-writing that shores up his gentle voice and country-tinged guitar playing with extra layers of vocal arrangements and charming piano vamps. Strains of classic rock filter into the Beatlesque "Baby Britain" and the Beach Boys-inspired "I Didn't Understand"- but Smith succeeds in adapting them to his style rather than the other way around. A foot soldier in DreamWorks' war on standard-issue rock & roll, Smith joins new label mates Rufus Wainwright and Morphine as sophisticated interpreters of the new male psyche. XO is a stunning shadow print of a soul adrift in the music industry, a dark place indeed. --Lois Maffeo Fragt: Ukendt! |

Mull Historical Society LossSe flere produkter fra AmazonMull Historical Society seem to live in a hermetically-sealed world on Loss, like their indie peers Clearlake and Belle and Sebastian, where reality is glimpsed only through a filter of fanciful fantasy. Named after a genuine society, dedicated to the preservation of tradition on their home island--the Isle Of Mull, in the Inner Hebrides--Mull are a Scottish band of a familiarly twee mould. A mere duo, consisting of frontman and songwriter Colin MacIntyre and bassist Alan Malloy, their sound is bolstered on this debut with a jumble-sale haul of queer, quirky little touches: an alarm bell ringing in the background of "Public Service Announcer"; a children's choir, accompanying the whimsical, gently unfolding "Instead"; and a mixture of samples, electronics, and imaginatively-utilised household instruments, billowing out of this record's numerous nooks and crannies. It's easy to see whispers of Mercury Rev--albeit, a Rev transplanted from the backwoods of Middle America to the sandy, windswept beach of a remote Scottish island--providing an inspiration for some Mull's wide-eyed tales. If you can hack MacIntyre's occasional simpering tone, the likes of "Barcode Bypass"--the tragic tale of the closing of the local cornershop--or "I Tried"--heartbreak, rendered as a chugging, theremin-accompanied indie-rock anthem-- offer a world so pure, so untainted, it's got to be worth a visit.-- Louis Pattison Fragt: Ukendt! |

Spring Heel Jack DisappearedSe flere produkter fra AmazonOn Disappeared Spring Heel Jack forge an energising alliance between the populist and the avant garde, splicing together dance floor rhythms with free jazz dynamics. The title track "Disappeared 1" even opens with a blast of discordant and distorted bass clarinet whose circular squall hangs in the air like an avian predator. What follows sounds like electric-era Miles Davis stapled to a subliminal wash of therapeutic synths, by turns contemplative and extremely agitating. "Disappeared 2" uses the bass clarinet to underpin a meandering melody with an insistent hoochy-coochy rhythm. On "I Undid Myself", Wales and Coxon translate a psychedelic rock stomp through a four-pole filter. "Mit Wut" is a mesh of steady slave-driving rhythm and bombastic "Ride Of The Valkyrie" chords, while on "Wolfing" they assume the guise of a grindhouse combo, churning out sleazy hip-swivelling syncopation. This is dance music with a spring in its step as it fast-forwards to the future. -- Chris Campion Fragt: Ukendt! |

Original Soundtrack The X-Files: The AlbumSe flere produkter fra AmazonAccording to the liner notes, 20 million people gather 'round the tube to watch The X-Files each week, so it's not a stretch to believe that the movie will be huge beyond belief. With that kind of hype, the producers were under a lot of pressure to put together an incredible soundtrack to back it up. At first glance, the disc looks aptly huge, featuring artists like Foo Fighters, The Cure, Bjork, and Sting. How does it stand up? Surprisingly, the smaller groups are the ones providing the best music within. Filter's reworking of Three Dog Night's "One" kicks the disc into high gear but the excitement plummets from there. The Foo Fighter's new track, "Walking After You," is a softly-sung mediocre pop song; Sting should be ashamed to be regurgitating yet another number ("Invisible Sun" with World Beat artist Aswad). It's also disappointing to see the inclusion of already-released cuts, like Bjork's "Hunter" and a forcibly altered version of Sarah Mclachlan's "Black." --Denise Sheppard Fragt: Ukendt! |

Ernest Ranglin Below The BasslineSe flere produkter fra AmazonOne of the most revered elder statesmen of Jamaican music, Ranglin's career has seen him master a number of styles--from swing through ska, from Cuban music to jazz and bluebeat. A musician's musician, he's an unfailingly tasteful player, and passionately engaged with music of all kinds: now in his sixties, he seems as much at home with the latest drum and bass white label, as with a rocksteady rhythm. And it's this willingness to experiment, this creative restlessness, that has endeared him to subsequent generations of producers and players. Here, he teamed with American-based pianist Monty Alexander, on a collection of both original numbers, and classic Jamaican songs ("Ball Of Fire", Augustus Pablo's "King Tubby Meets The Rockers") which the duo filter through their respective reggae and jazz leanings. The rhythms are deep and cavernous, though serious jazz fans could argue that the sheer relentlessness of the groove--and the comparative simplicity of the tunes--renders them unsuitable for real improvisation. Nevertheless, a fine, distinctive set. -- Andrew McGuire Fragt: Ukendt! |

Godsmack GodsmackSe flere produkter fra AmazonIn a post-Seattle Sound rock world, there's still a hunger for music that's dark, dirge-like, and heavy. And the void left by Soundgarden and company is being filled by a spate of bands, including Boston's Godsmack, who even nicked their name from an Alice in Chains song. Like Creed and Days of the New, Godsmack are raging and disenfranchised, as singer Sully Erna's lyrics illustrate: "I am in a living hell / Makes me wonder if I'm alive" or "You're pathetic in your own way / I don't like you anyway." Though the territory being mined isn't new, Godsmack's grungy grooves, potent energy, and strong hooks are irresistible. With a dash of Tool and a smattering of Filter seeping through, Godsmack are on the money, especially on "Whatever", the tantalizing "Get Up, Get Out!", and the strident and syncopated "Bad Religion," on which Erna puts one in mind of James Hetfield. While Godsmack's approach may not be fresh, the foursome's strong songs and powerful energy are still intensely tasty--especially for those with a taste for songs on the sober--but never staid--side. --Katherine Turman Fragt: Ukendt! |
